[Q] Excessive data usage with EAS/Outlook.com - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Had my Nexus 5 for a few days and during that time it seems to have racked up nearly 2GB in Exchange ActiveSync traffic to Outlook.com
I use it for personal mail only, probably 10-20 mails a day. I've had the same contract since 2004 on multiple different devices and never cracked more than a few hundred meg on EAS specific traffic.
I'm using the stock mail client.
Anyone else seen this?

WM 6.1 Push eMail with Hotmail a fake?

Hi Group,
WM 6.1 standard (non-touch) has apparently got Push capabilities together with a Hotmail account.
I tested it, setup was a breeze, set to "get eMail as they arrive" and you have got Push Mail on your smartphone...
Apparently.
Although receiving only a few small eMails a day, I got next month a HUGE invoice from my provider, detailing thousands of separate connections to GPRS every 4-5 minutes all day long.
Indeed the option "get eMail as they arrive" appears to be more or less a Microsoft fake, WM just polls the mailbox frequently enough to give the feeling of a push.
So if you haven't got a flat data plan with your provider, avoid that setting.
By the way: even if you have got one: the permanent polling will drain your battery, more than the rest of your smartphone usage.
Be aware!

I am using the Blackberry Connect software on my HTC Fuze (on T-Mobile, with the $20 unlimited Blackberry plan). This gives me push-mail capabilities that are somewhat easy on the battery, as the Blackberry push-mail implementation is different from other solutions. Not that I would actually know the specifics, but in my tests it works a lot better and preserves battery life longer than IMAP-Idle or email polling every ten minutes or so.

S: Instant Messenger without battery drain

I am looking for an instant messenger application that is easy on the battery of my HTC Fuze. I tried Beejive, but it just runs down my battery in no time when connected. I also tried OZ, which uses SMS instead of a data connection. This of course saves some battery life as it doesn't need an always-on data connection, but it would also quickly decrease the pool of my included text messages.
I was searching for a solution that would allow forwarding of instant messages via email. And if I were to receive such an email, I could then fire up Beejive and engage in the conversation. Does anyone know about such a service? I googled like crazy but couldn't find a thing.
As an FYI, I am using my HTC Fuze on T-Mobile with the $20 Blackberry unlimited data plan and a bucket of 400 text messages.
i would say that the im client is the least of the batt drain thing
the fact that the phone have to be online with gprs or wifi all the time
to be connected is what drains the power
which program would not make much of a diffrence

I think I might have a solution... Scratch the Blackberry plan, add T-Zones 5.99 plan and an unlimited 15$ a month text plan and your good for a buck extra a month.
Not a bad idea, if I wasn't using the Blackberry Connect software to get push-mail -- which is surprisingly gentle on my battery, even though it uses an always-on EDGE connection.
I'm trialing this at the moment, tempted to buy it when my 7 days runs out

Very little battery drain and when signal drops can forward messages to an email address you specify

Push E-mail without Data Plan

I am currently deciding between a Tilt 2 and a Blackberry Bold 9700. I will not have a data plan (unnecessary), but have 24/7 WiFi.
So can I have push e-mail without a data plan? I know that Blackberry requires a data plan, otherwise you have to use the browser to check e-mail.
I'm not positive on this, but I do believe that if you actually set wifi to always stay active, you can have push mail working.
I've done something similar in the past, though I did it for an IMAP account that would be checked every 5 minutes, not for actual push mail. However, I would imagine that it would/should work similarly.

[Q] Limited Data Usage Question

Hello all, I will be getting the Inspire in two weeks as well as getting the 200mb data plan also.
I've never had a data plan before so I wanted to know how much data the weather widget takes up as well as Gmail and Facebook updates.
I'm mostly around wifi so I don't foresee the data being a problem, but I'd like the heads up.

You will go through that in a week. Get the 2gb

You can sign up for the 200 and go into your account and change it to the 2gb plan if you are using more which is likely.
Really...
Thanks for the replies guys, but are you really sure I'm going to go over?
I receive less than 3 emails a day, I usually receive less then 5 Facebook notifications a week, I'm never going to surf the web on the network, I'm never going to download apps on the network, and I will most surly never stream video or music on the network.
Will just weather and 2-3 emails a day run me over?
You'll be fine as far as usage goes if its based on what you posted. And like said before, you can always move it up to the 2gb. However if it was me I'd start with the higher plan and move down to better determine my usage.

Keep in mind the overage charges as well. Also keep in mind that there are apps that use your data even when your connected to WiFi.

I have used 27.7 MB of 200 for billing cycle FEB 21st - MAR 2st
That's about 1 week so 30MB * 4 week = 120 MB
I don't count on going over
I turn off autosync and background sync while on mobile network
and flip it back on while on Wifi
Thus on 3g i only get email when i manually refresh and on wifi i get instant notification
Of note... gmail offers forwarding of emails as text to your phone which is free... assuming u have unlimited texting. Thus, i can receive an email text and if important i can flick 3g on and open up gmail app

Ok cool, thanks for the help. I didn't know about the sms thing, but thats great.
You can certainly get by on that if you turn off sync and mobile data when you aren't using it or are not on wifi.

[Q] sync interval gmail

Hi everyone,
i have an question about the sync interval of gmail.
at this moment i'm using gmail so that when there is a new mail i'll be notified, this costs a lot of batterylife thru the day.
i want for example that synch interval will be done every hour?
how will i make this happen????????????
grtz roland
Push notifications
I actually believe that the official gmail application for android doesn't let you configure what you're suggesting because it uses push notifications, which means it doesn't wastes battery "asking" the internet when you have a new e-mail, but the internet tells it and it appears instantly.
The only time option in this application is about how many mails do you want your phone to storage in cache, measured in days. For example, if you type 7, you'll always be able to see much quicklier the mails you received last week.
