Google wallet tap and pay on custom roms - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I was just noticing that whenever I flash custom Roms based on aosp, I lose Google wallet tap and pay functionality. I really use this feature and would love to know if there is any way to get it back.

It might have something to due with the current ROM you are running. AOSP, depending on which one, may have issues (nightlies broke it, incompatible with changes, etc). I'd test on stock based ROM and another AOSP ROM to confirm between if its ROM related or if its a bad flash. May need to lose function of wallet if that ROM is the one you need to use or use older version if it worked in the past.

ICS rom with high wife acceptance factor

I've been using custom firmwares on Android devices since CM 4 on my G1. Currently I have an sgs running an ICS rom.
My wife has a nexus s (don't have the exact model number on me. Its from Rogers and still on gb) and wants some of the features she sees on mine. On my phone I'm more than happy to use beta roms and kernels and flash 3x daily. I don't want to do that with hers nor can I keep up with the latest news for both devices. You nexus folks have a freaky active dev scene.
So, is there a "set it and forget it" calibre ICS rom for the mighty nexus yet?

most of the rom you could use as a daily without worrying. you can even do a stock ics rom with a custom kernel. i use the latest cm9(kang) with the trinity teuv kernel as my daily(most the time). not a single issue here.
Nexus Beam with Speedy 5. Very stable. Also currently using Bigxie 4 and Speedy 5 with 0 issues.

I'm in the exact same situation as you. After stealing her phone and trying several different ICS ROMs, i found AndroidME to be the best suited for her. It's pretty much stock ICS, it runs really smooth and there hasn't really been any issues. I know it's working well because I haven't heard one complaint in the 3 weeks she's being using it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421564

I'm using AOKP build 19 with kernel SG-NS-ICS 17-01-2012, very fast and stable for me
Most ROMs here can be used daily, and in terms of battery/speed I honestly don't notice much difference between one another. Peter Alfonso's ROM is known for stability, but I would suggest flashing a different kernel to improve performance and battery life. KANGY that I currently use is also stable and has more features than AOSP, or at least v8 is.
For kernel, don't use SG-NS-ICS kernel or any with a default undervolted/overclocked state because not all phones can handle that. I recommend Eugene's ICUP as the best "use and forget" IMO because of the smartassv2/BLD/BLN default state and good battery life.
Set Nova Launcher beta 13 as the default launcher and don't automatic update. If she likes customizing wallpapers and icons she'll like it.
Wow.
After checking out the ICUP kernel, and some of the roms like KANGY and the state of the Nexus CM9 vs the SGS CM9, I'm tempted to steal her phone and give her mine. Don't know if I can give up the 720p video though...
Thanks for the input.

[Q] Type of Galaxy Matter?

Hello everyone,
I am probably going to be upgrading to the galaxy siii in 3 days or so and I am just making sure that it doesn't matter what type of Galaxy siii I get, for example the white vs. the blue one, wil that make a difference in terms of rooting and flashing aoskp?
Also would you guys recommend getting the nexus or the siii? I really do not want touchwiz so I will be flashing cm10 or aoskp asap... Would you say they are stable enough for everyday use at the moment?
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

The color doesn't matter. What matters is the model number which will vary depending on the carrier. The S3 is definitely a superior phone hardware wise. CM10/AOSP/AOKP is not stable enough for everyday use IN MY OPINION.

Thanks,
I know for a fact that I will be sticking with Verizon on this upgrade (that should work?), what isn't working with stock android at the moment for the sgs3?
The main deciding factor for me is really just if some version of aosp (stable-ish) is working for the phone because I cannot stand touchwiz.

The unofficial CM10 builds are mostly working, and lots of folks will call them daily drivers. At the moment, as far as I know, there are some issues with MMS and handoffs between 3g and 4g. MHL-out might not be working either. Beyond that, CM10 is in pretty good shape.
You have some good options for TW-based ROMS, too. Between debloated ROMs, third-party launchers and lock screens, AOSP versions of apps like Messaging, and modded notification shades, you can pretty much hide or replace most of what you'll see of TW. It works quite well if the remaining CM10 bugs are deal-breakers.
Once you disable the wifi notification the stock rom is more than good. None of the custom roms IMO are up to snuff to bother flashing. I'm sure people will say otherwise but the GS3 has very minimal bloat. Doesn't even need rooted YET.

The Synergy ROM is great. I also do not like TW but am using a different launcher (Apex) and everything is working fine. The color does not matter but I have noticed a bunch of posts from people wanting to trade their blues for whites...
Thanks for all of the information guys,
MMS is not very important for me (SMS is) and I don't really have a problem with having issues with switching between 4g and 3g, but what is 'MHL-out'?
Also are there any good step by step rooting, installing recovery, etc guides out there that someone can link me to? I am coming from Motorola and HTC phones and I am completely unfamiliar with how Samsung phones are set up... for example, do we need to bootstrap this since the phone has a locked bootloader?
If you check in the Development section for the samsung galaxy s3, you can see many rooting methods. I personally used the one by Noxious Ninja, because it was fast, effective, and was convenient because I flashed AOKP immediately. If you are planning on using a custom rom with a custom kernel, you will need to use a kernel with KEXEC support. Through a couple reboots, it will successfully enable you to use roms that support it.
AOKP in my opinion was super stable once I cleared up the data issues manually. I used it for a long time as a daily driver and it worked really well. The only reason I switched to SynergyROM was because I was trying to try something on my S3.
EDIT: Oh yeah, MHL-Out is the interface for outputting video from the S3 to say a television.
Thanks yosterwp,
If I were to use AOKP do I need to be running a custom kernel or can I run the stock kernel?
If I don't change the kernel should I be able to OC?
If you were using aokp, all you would need to do is to get a KEXEC recovery, and then flash aokp rom and gapps like you normally would. And BAM! You should be running AOKP. No custom kernels to flash on your part, as AOKP includes its own kernel.
Just note that since you are using a custom kernel, your s3 will appear to bootloop (or restart many times), but that is okay as you will eventually land in unicorn utopia.
EDIT: As for OC'ing, I believe by accident, the developer had left the rom overclocking to 1.9GHz by default, you may want to lower that.
Alright, thank you for the warning about the accidentally OC'ed CPU.
Will SetCPU work fine for changing the processor speeds on the SGS3 or will I need a different type of OC'ing application?
Also what is your opinion on Paranoid Android? It looks quite cool in my opinion but I am not sure if I would like it better than CM10 or AOKP. I guess the only way to know is to try it out!
Thanks again,
Ljbaumer
Yes set cpu will work for regulating over clock.I have used paranoid on galaxy nexus and loved it.I havent tried it out on my s3 yet tho.I have liked the jelly bean Rom that's out for this phone so it maybe another option for ya also.

Quick question, I just got the SGS3 about an hour ago, will rooting with "i535VRLG1" work? Or am I screwed?

Google Experience S4

Hello there. Like many of you I love my S4 but want a more Google experience to my phone. A while so I posted a topic about how to improve your S4 without root to make it feel more like a stock android phone on the original Samsung rom. I loved the original Stock Samsung ROM but I wanted something different. Here is what I did to my phone to make it stock android.
I rooted my phone with motochopper following videos from wwjoshdew on YouTube. (Great channel with awesome helpful videos)
With root I improved some of the things that Samsung has going with the phone. Although Google makes the best... So I flashed a ROM.
I installed goo manager from the play store and then installed TWRP from goo. After this I created a backup if the Stock Samsung ROM and wiped the necessary files. I then flushed CyanogenMod 10.1 which is amazing.
Now to make the most of this ROM make sure to do a couple of things.
- install Nova launcher
- Reset the CPU and under clock
- optimize battery life
This will make the phone buttery smooth in everything that it does. I am running CM10.1 at 1.45ghz and getting battery for DAYS!!! I'm also using LMT launcher for Pie control which just adds to the phones new ROM. Play with the phone and add screenshots of the phone.
CyanogenMod 10.1 is a great alternative to the stock Samsung ROM that allows for the user to have a more Google experience. Its truly amazing and with its additions to the stock Android OS it is amazing!
Enjoy the ROM and enjoy using it!

I have similar setup, the only difference is that I used a PAC-ROM instead of just Cyanogenmod. I can confirm that the performance is also buttery smooth. I haven't tried throttling down CPU clocks yet, but I'll give it a try and report back what I find on PAC-ROM
This is hardly "the Google experience" Its cyanogenmod... Granted its built from AOSP source, but its definitely far from stock android.

Is there a stock "GE" ROM out there - I've been hunting through the forums for some time - for a relative newbie the alphabet soup posts are tough to decrypt but I don't see any straight up GE roms?
Yes there's a couple. Pretty stable also. I'm running task aokp and its by far my favorite ROM. Dude knows his stuff.

I think once CM 10.2 comes out with the new camera I'll be happy (assuming it lives up to they hype). The current CM camera is not especially good and a little unstable to boot. HDR doesn't work correctly either.
I greatly prefer the CM experience (and AOSP) to the stock TouchWiz one, mostly for reasons of aesthetics, but the AOSP and CM cameras are both way behind.

My theory:
The new cm will only live up to the hype on nexus devices, why? We are still working with the same camera drivers/libs...all it really is, is just a new app fir the camera...but we still need good source ti work with from samsung
I could be wrong about the aboce but thats what I believe

I've seen those, and even installed a few. They're all modified versions of the stock GE in some way shape or form. I suppose the question should be, are there any unmodified Google Edition ROMs available for the S4?

The first link is pretty much unmodified...just debloated and deaodexed/zipaligned which is common for any rom as it enables easier use of mods if wanted...

I'm rooted on stock with minor tweaks ie greenify, uninstall master to remove bloatware etc and I can average 5-5.5hrs of screen time on moderatetto heavy usage. What are you getting with your set up?

Tips for new 5 user

The Nexus 5 has been out a while. I am getting a used one from a friend. His payment: dinner at Famous Daves (his choice).
Any tips or tricks i should know about this device compared to other nexus devices? I had a galaxy nexus at one point and gave it up for the Note 2 which is what I am giving up now.
Just thought I would see if there were any quirks, good ROM's, or anything before I start using it.
Just a heads up:
Noticed your profile mentions you're on Verizon, which you can't use with the Nexus 5.

Long story, I'm on en employee plan for an employer I'm no longer with. Been on it for 2 years after I left. I don't want to be on when they do an audit. I will be switching over to Att or cricket.
May need to replace the battery, otherwise the offer not bad.

I've tried a few custom roms but my favorite combination on this phone is still the stock rom, rooted with Xposed framework and the Gravitybox module installed. The good thing about the N5 is there are lots of good ROMs and Kernels out there to try out. I like Xposed because it allows you to modify/add features to the the stock google experience (It's kind of a soft-mod.) Either way, a custom kernel is a must. I've tried several, but on my N5 I prefer Franco Kernel. His $2-$3 app on the play store (Franco Kernel Updater) is worth every cent. I agree with replacing the battery if the phone is a few years old.

I saw all of the ROMs in the forums. That is something I will like. The Note 2 forums have run dry. The only ROM still being developed is CM12.1 and even that is pretty buggy. Can't keep my bluetooth on to save my life (also to connect my pebble). That forum is pretty dead now.

Close to Stock?

Hello,
I am Nexus 5 user myself. I have a friend at work that was looking to switch over from the iPhone to Android and I sold him on the OnePlus One for the price, spec, and larger screen size. He has had decent luck with it so far but has been getting a lot of app and system app crashes lately. I think he may have received one OTA update to CyanogenMod since he's had the phone. I want to improve his Android experience, so I am wanting to get him as close to stock as possible but with some customization.
Personally, I have run multiple custom roms & custom kernels on my Nexus 5, but always end up going back to Stock image with Franco Kernel and Xposed Framework with Gravitybox and several other modules. I want to get him as close to this setup as I can on his OnePlus One.
From what I can tell it looks like OxygenOS is based on AOSP, so that means no CAF kernel right? So can I flash OxygenOS on his OnePlus One and then flash the plain old vanilla Franco Kernel? I know Gravitybox is officially only supported on Nexus devices but I know it will work on AOSP ROMs.
Is OxygenOS the way to go to get this phone close to stock image? Any other suggestions that may allow the use of a dark material theme (or does OxygenOS have this already?). Any assistance is appreciated. I want to get him up an running on a nice stable OS. I know it was great pre-Jellybean, but I haven't been all that impressed with CyanogenMod OS since then personally.

You can't install Franco on Oxygen, as far as I know there's only one compatible kernel for Oxygen, can't remember which one it is though. In saying that, Oxygen is fairly close to stock so that might be what you're looking for. If you're considering install GravityBox in order to get some extra customisation then going close to stock probably isn't the best idea, it might be better to grab one of the ROMs that has some customisation built in natively.
About a stable ROM? I'm not really a good kernel user since I always use the default rom kernel. You may want to try a customed UI named Flyme based on 5.0.2. I think that it really made my phone's using time longer, and the camera is also better that Cyan. Hope I helped you.
