Hello there. Like many of you I love my S4 but want a more Google experience to my phone. A while so I posted a topic about how to improve your S4 without root to make it feel more like a stock android phone on the original Samsung rom. I loved the original Stock Samsung ROM but I wanted something different. Here is what I did to my phone to make it stock android.
I rooted my phone with motochopper following videos from wwjoshdew on YouTube. (Great channel with awesome helpful videos)
With root I improved some of the things that Samsung has going with the phone. Although Google makes the best... So I flashed a ROM.
I installed goo manager from the play store and then installed TWRP from goo. After this I created a backup if the Stock Samsung ROM and wiped the necessary files. I then flushed CyanogenMod 10.1 which is amazing.
Now to make the most of this ROM make sure to do a couple of things.
- install Nova launcher
- Reset the CPU and under clock
- optimize battery life
This will make the phone buttery smooth in everything that it does. I am running CM10.1 at 1.45ghz and getting battery for DAYS!!! I'm also using LMT launcher for Pie control which just adds to the phones new ROM. Play with the phone and add screenshots of the phone.
CyanogenMod 10.1 is a great alternative to the stock Samsung ROM that allows for the user to have a more Google experience. Its truly amazing and with its additions to the stock Android OS it is amazing!
Enjoy the ROM and enjoy using it!
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I have similar setup, the only difference is that I used a PAC-ROM instead of just Cyanogenmod. I can confirm that the performance is also buttery smooth. I haven't tried throttling down CPU clocks yet, but I'll give it a try and report back what I find on PAC-ROM
This is hardly "the Google experience" Its cyanogenmod... Granted its built from AOSP source, but its definitely far from stock android.

Is there a stock "GE" ROM out there - I've been hunting through the forums for some time - for a relative newbie the alphabet soup posts are tough to decrypt but I don't see any straight up GE roms?
Yes there's a couple. Pretty stable also. I'm running task aokp and its by far my favorite ROM. Dude knows his stuff.

I think once CM 10.2 comes out with the new camera I'll be happy (assuming it lives up to they hype). The current CM camera is not especially good and a little unstable to boot. HDR doesn't work correctly either.
I greatly prefer the CM experience (and AOSP) to the stock TouchWiz one, mostly for reasons of aesthetics, but the AOSP and CM cameras are both way behind.

Oh really? Youve been hunting for quite some time? Just opening up the dev section and just scrolling through (didnt even need to use search function) I find these:

My theory:
The new cm will only live up to the hype on nexus devices, why? We are still working with the same camera drivers/libs...all it really is, is just a new app fir the camera...but we still need good source ti work with from samsung
I could be wrong about the aboce but thats what I believe

I've seen those, and even installed a few. They're all modified versions of the stock GE in some way shape or form. I suppose the question should be, are there any unmodified Google Edition ROMs available for the S4?

The first link is pretty much unmodified...just debloated and deaodexed/zipaligned which is common for any rom as it enables easier use of mods if wanted...

Hello, I decided to write this thread, your opinions in addition to knowledge and experience, I serve as a guideline for deciding on a particular ROM, I'm now with P3110XWBLH3 rooted, and what I want more than anything is overclocked, smoothness and stability, which is something ^ ^
Will include the following, as I see it is notably more:
Stock ICS 4.0.4
CM9
CM10
AOKP
If anyone suggests otherwise, of course included.
I hope your opinions.
Thank you.
I'm now on AOKP Build 4 and like it! But remember - if you need Samsung Apps you have to stay on a stock ROM...
IMHO it is Stock 4.0.4:
- Keyboard, Mouse and Bluetooth headset worked without any additional steps
- TouchWiz is really faster and no lagging when using it
- Good working time (For me battery enough approx two days)
- Nice small apps available all the time fand no matter what application or game launched (Splanner, task manager, calc)

You kidding me lol ? :silly:
AKOP Build 4 , blows any ROM out of the water. Read this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892049
Obvviously it progresses through the various builds, but you will see it get better and better as the thread goeson . The problem with asking about ROMs is that its down to personal opinion , Such as myself and Ailir; disagree , but dose not mean that either of us are right or wrong. The best thing to do is to flash them all and find one that works for you.
There is no "best ROM" , its all down to personal needs.....BUT JellyBean is a better option , no matter the what the ROM , be it a custom build or stock.
My 2 cents, not worth much but you did ask lol
AOKP кeview the best .. but I have a СM10, he likes me more ...

I agree...I love AOKP, and build 4 just keeps getting better, especially with the Over Clock Kernal. But it is really preference. For a long time I was pure CM, but after I gave AOKP a try I could never go back, just isn't the same.

Nope not much you can do as they are a Samsung Stock exclusive and made to work on Stock ROMs. Its a pity as I really like some of the stock apps. Love the music/video player. I have been trying to fiddle with them for ages , cant get them signed or installed.
Installed cm10.1 with Dohllmen Kernel and works fine!
I recently updated to CM10 from a superlight stock rom. I am getting to know JB and one issue I am having is that contacts birthdays will not show up in calender.
I refuse to sync with google and just can't get it to work locally. it worked on the old rom without sycning.
Does anyone know how to fix/workaround this?
Ideally I want a completely local calender/contacts app. I have no need at all to sync anything to google/cloud/internet and refuse to do so.
P.s. While I am posting a thread anyways, does anyone know of a good alternative to the stock samsung/ATT dialer/contacts/phone. I HATE the CM10 apps with a passion and best I have found so far is rocket dialer/DWcontacts and both fall short of the stock apps.
Thanks for any help.

I don't think you can on CM. The only way is to sync. I am not a 100% sure though.
If you desperately want this, install stock based ROM like embryo

I considered a stock based rom but prefer most features of CM over it. Only real catch points are the above mentioned dialer/phone/contacts and that the birthdays don't show up in the calender.
I much prefer some of the security features of CM such as being able to run PDroid. Along with being able to ditch ALL the bloat and build the rom to my specs.
Maybe I should see if this even works in the stock based rom, if not then it is a moot point anyways.

Interesting, I skipped over embryo before due to it being MASSIVE (think it was 650mb) and figured it had to be nothing but full bloat.
Why is it so large? I much prefer lightweight roms that are simple/direct over a bloated rom with tons of things I will never use. Can you cut the size down post install?
Right now I am on CM10 superlight and love the fast boost/lightweight of it.

Anyone know what the "actual rom" size is with the bloat removed?
Been looking into embryo and got to say it looks interesting. This does bring up another question I have never been able to find a clear cut answer to (messing with my phone is just an as needed hobby of mine).
What exactly can CM do that a stock rom can't? Besides the super compact/clutter free ness of it, what other reasons are there to go with CM over something like embryo from a purely technical standpoint? I could not find a clear cut answer to this when searching, so gave up and decided that CM must be better so gonna make it work.

If that is really it, I actually much prefer the touchwiz interface personally. :good:
My last superlight stock rom severed me very well. Biggest reason I wanted to switch over was for the PDriod/other security options.
Does anyone know of a website or youtube channel that does reviews for the S3 ROM for Verizon? I hate downloading buggy ROMs so it would save me some headaches.

ROM thread? You mean the section with all the ROMS in it that has Stars next to the thread title? I've been in that thread and it doesn't seem like a well organized place to find something stable. The information is there, but just not well organized.
You won't know if the Rom works for your phone until you tried them. If you can't find a Rom that works well on your phone then I suggest going back to stock. The reason I am saying this is because not everyone here have the same experience with the same Rom.

Id like to help you find a ROM that you like. This phone is so much better running it the way you'd like it to. Are you trying to run a stock based TouchWiz ROM or AOSP? This is very important as not many AOSP ROMs are completely stable. TouchWiz stock based ROMs however are very stable. I would like to suggest my ROM made off of the official ROM for our phones. It offers many very nice features which you can either choose or not choose to use with the Aroma installer. It's the forth release of the ROM so all the bugs have been fixed and the ROM is fast and stable. Please check out the thread to the ROM and read through it and see if you fund it worth trying. The thread offers a lot of good information about exactly what you will find in the ROM.

Thanks man, you are so kind! The only ROM i have ever used is Synergyrom and the last few updates I did with Synergyrom had some bugs in it. I haven't tried the very last patch though. One update gave my bluetooth phone static. This last ROM i am using from Synergy makes Dolphin crash but I'm not sure if it's due to the ROM. My google maps also isn't working either. It works but it only tells me to turn left or right but never gives me the name of the street that I want to turn on.
Anyway, all I really need from the ROM is something that allows Nova Launcher to work, Bluetooth without static, Dolphin without crashing, Google Maps to work by giving me streets names when it talks to me, and the ability to use Amazon Video on Demand. The Amazon thing might be a long shot though but that would be really awesome! I don't play any games on my phone, mainly use it for music and watching movies from youtube or whatever I download. Amazon on demand would be great though!
Edit: One more thing I forgot to add! They keyboard needs to be 1 handed operational. I forgot what it's called but I currently have it on my phone, the keyboard is smaller and moved more to the right so I can operate it with one hand. I also don't know what AOSP is so I really don't need that.

So with the probability that we'll be getting OTA 4.3 soon and the official 4.4 nightlies bound to start anytime, which are you most looking forward to?
I love the features of TouchWiz, but I've migrated to CyanogenMod since 4.1.2 feels really dated now.
Which features do you like about your respective favorite and why?

I'm not here to make fun. I think TW has as many benefits as AOSP does, just for different reasons. :highfive:

4.3 TW to be honest
Want to see if it boosts Quadrant benchmarks since the CM11 builds certainly haven't
Who cares if the quadrant score isn't higher? As others have said, 4.4 is insanely fast! I don't need a score to tell me that. 4.3 TW may have higher quadrant scores but it won't touch 4.4 AOSP for real life speed. Apps open instantaneously, lag is nonexistent... What are you looking for?

Actually Ubuntu Touch is what i wan't the most
I like TW. I have been running carbon since goodness is MIA. I can say I look forward to a new TW. I miss some of the features.
Tough question. If we even see TW 4.3 anymore, I'd say that. I was on the cm11 builds for a few days, and like most aosp roms, it is plagued by camera quality and data issues. Data is fine in good service areas, but low/fringe areas struggle, then it murders your battery. I had to come back to TW for stability. I know cm11 is young, but even some aosp 4.2 and 4.3 roms give me similar results with the camera and data issues. Just my experience.

As much as I'd love to use CM11, I can't stand the AOSP camera and that is why I use Touchwiz. CM11 looks so good though, and apparently has something called "ART" which apparently is good, so I will probably flash a CM11 rom to give it a try, but will end up reverting to Touchwiz like always because of the camera.

Exactly like me. I don't even like the TW interface, but the camera and data issues always make me come back. I tried CM11 over the weekend, and it was really smooth. ART is pretty cool, too. Makes the apps launch almost instantly, but isn't compatible with all apps. Makes for a lot of troubleshooting and xda reading. What made me switch back to TW was when my girlfriend and I were literally right next to each other using our phones, she had 4G (Galaxy S4) and I had no data. It never came back until we moved to an area with a little better signal.

ART is not part of CM , its a experimental runtime environment that Google has inserted into 4.4 . At this point it's mainly experimental for developers. Many / most current apps don;t support it.
If you don;t like the way TouchWiz looks , you can run any other launcher on a TW ROm and have the best of both worlds, stability and all features working with a different UI appearance.

Just my .02 but the TW vs. AOSP was never just about appearance. It was more about the amount of "bloatware" on TW roms that some never use or see any need for. Most of the Samsung features and apps fall into the this category.
I just went back to a TW ROM due to way too many random reboots, shoddy data, and mediocre camera quality. It's a love hate relationship, because the only thing I like about TW is the data and camera, while the UI and buttery smoothness of AOSP is what I really enjoy. TW ROMs always lag for me. If only we could have both together...

Apps you don;t want are easily removed or frozen. They don;t hurt anything just sitting there anyway. The Custom TW ROMs have the useless items removed while retaining the good stuff like All Share and the IR Remote functions. They also add the options to install themes, lots of 4.3 and 4.4 features etc. That's why there's not a lot of excitement about 4.3 or 4.4, we already have most of it.
I am excited for both.
I really wish there was working multiboot for the d2vzw, though. When I'm traveling, I'd rather be on TW because I find battery life and camera quality are much better. Otherwise I'm on AOSP.
I'm on Gummy Nightly 4.4.2 and I'm looking for something more stable. Life is a bit hectic right now so I'm not able to constantly flash a new rom.
What has been the best 4.4.2 rom that you've had the most success with?

I meant to say "stable" I just want a rom where the basic functions like Camera work and I'm able to use instagram etc without it crashing. Gummy is fine, but not being able to use the camera is a big thing. I would like a multi-window feature that Hyperdrive has, but I'd like to stay at 4.4.2.
Also, no I will never go back to stock. As for those who have used one or two different roms their opinions are still valid. They can say whether it was stable or not.

I meant to say "stable" I just want a rom where the basic functions like Camera work and I'm able to use instagram etc without it crashing. Gummy is fine, but not being able to use the camera is a big thing.

A ROM with a non-functioning camera would never even get consideration from me ! Same applies to ROMs with no working data. Does the Gummy thread tell you the camera doesn't work ? I'd hope so !!
For what it's worth, I've tried the following KK ROMs (with my opinion/comments):
Beanstalk (Gideon's build) - good ROM, no complaints that I can recall.
Omni (Gideon's build) - too plain or simple (or boring) for me. Didn't have a few features that I've grown to like (I blame PAC for that !!). It was stable though.
LiquidSmooth (both the LS team version and Gideon's) - my preferred ROM at the moment. Runs fine, everything works, and has many of the features I like. Between two builds a week and a half apart, I see add'l things added too.
ParanoidAndroid (notta's build) - can't recall any details at the moment.
I suggest trying ParanoidAndroid 4.0 BETA. Yes, it is a beta but it is very stable. I have been using it since Notta switched to 4.4.x. The are still working out small bugs (like every other KK ROM), but like I said, it's very stable.
It does not have multi-window. For that I suggest Omni ROM. I've been using that on my ASUS TF300T and it works awesome!
As evident by some above commentary, XDA is not a support site and users are expected to test all Roms to make their own, independent, determinations as to what is stable for them.
