This morning I noticed that the Email app on my new Nexus 5 is being the biggest drainer of my battery. Just overnight my battery level dropped about 30-50%. As far as I know, I have all my email accounts set up the same way as on my Nexus 4, while I never had the email app show up on the list of battery draining apps before.
My email accounts are set to sync every 15 minutes or one hour.
I was wondering if anyone else encountered this on their phone.

Even worse for me. Found out over 80% of my battery was being drained by email. 3 POP accounts, all synced at 15 min intervals. I have switched to IMAP to see if it's any better.

Same here.
It's definitely a bug and it only affects corporate exchange accounts. POP3 and IMAP don't seem to be causing this issue, at least in my case.
Even though I set my sync option on my university email to once every hour...under settings-accounts-corporate, i could see that the email account was refreshing every second.
Got rid of that email account and it doesn't drain my battery anymore.
Seen similar issues with my N5 and the Email App syncing with a corporate Exchange server. It can get stuck and go into a loop, draining battery and masses of data.
Check this by going into the Accounts & Sync -> Corporate -> {the account you set up} And look at the email, if the spinning icon constantly shows it syncing and re-sync you have the issue. I removed and re-added the account, and it seems OK now
On GN3
I installed the KitKat email apk on my Galaxy Note 3, and I can confirm the excessive battery drain. For me, it doesn't appear to be associated with Exchange in that I'm using POP3 email. I haven't found a solution, so I deleted all the data until Google issues an update that will hopefully fix it. I'll probably go back to the Samsung client until then.
Good luck to finding a fix! Go Nexus 5!
I'm having a separate problem with the stock email app. It will not sync any of my work emails past November 1. Everything is set up correctly, and my work email syncs just fine on every other Android device I own.

The accounts that were draining my battery were POP3 as well. Not only that they killed my battery life, they did not even sync the emails besides for the very first connection. But I believe this thread talks about the same issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512237
I had the same thing yesterday after signing out and back in it fixed it
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm using the stock email app on android 4.4 on nexus 5 as well, but to sync with Hotmail/Outlook.com.
Whenever the sync frequency in the email app is set to Automatic/Push, Exchange Services constantly starts process non-stop and repeatedly. What I saw in Settings, under Corporate account is that it repeatedly syncs, constantly, even though there isn't any new items.
This resulted in heavy draining of the battery and the only workaround is to change the sync frequency to anything else but Push.
This doesn't happen on my Nexus 7 DEB FHD 2013 running Android 4.4.

As soon as I enable Google Now on my phone (Android 4.4.2 root, stock ROM and kernel) my battery starts to drain incredibly fast (it lasts about two hours idle). This problem doesn't happen if I disable Google Now and Location Services. I also tried with Greenify with no results. Will I ever be able to use Google Now?

I have a bone stock N5, and have Google Now enabled; my battery life is awesome. I poll 3 email accounts every 15 minutes, and have an exchange email account on push. I end the day at 30 - 50% most days. There has to be another issue at play on your phone.

After some days of testing I used Wakelock Terminator to kill some wakelocks, but I noticed that these wakelocks can't be killed and they are making some problems.

Which google play service version are you using?
It appears that Google Cloud Messaging is messing up, trying to do something and getting an error... What are the apps installed and what did you tweaked in the phone?
Personally, with such a severe battery issue, I'd just wipe clean and reinstall. Problem should be gone.
You'll spend more time trying to troubleshoot it than just wiping.

Hey all,
Anyone noticed any recent abnormally high background data utilisation from Android OS (both wifi and mobile?).
UK XT1032, 16GB stock unrooted Tesco firmware currently on 176.44.1. Hangouts, Migrate, Google+, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies & TV, Google Play Games, Google Play Books, & Chrome all disabled. Google Backup and Automatic Restore are on, all of the other Google Services set to Sync automatically. I use Firefox as my browser (with a sync to my laptop Firefox).
I've looked back on the data records for my phone and it looks like the problem started around the 25th of February. This roughly coincides to the last OTA to 176.44.1 which I'm pretty sure I got on the 26th or 27th. The most recent Google Play Services (4.4.43) installed on 1/3/14. The only other thing I can think of is K9 Mail which I installed on the 24th, although I'm struggling to see how a User app could show data used under Android OS.
I've checked my other half's Moto G (8GB UK version - O2 variant, stock unrooted) and she hasn't got this showing up at all. I've compared Sync/Backup settings between the two phones and they are the same, and other than Chrome she has pretty much the same stuff disabled. She doesn't use Firefox, and uses the stock email app with an exchange account.

16/1/14 to 13/2/14 - 311MB (so about 11MB day)
13/2/14 to 25/2/14 - 71.2MB ( about 6 MB day)
25/2/14 to 13/3/14 - 0.93GB ( about 55MB per day)
Mobile Data
15/1/14 to 15/2/14 - 70.19MB ( about 2.5MB per day)
15/2/14 to 25/2/14 - 21.14MB (about 2MB per day)
25/2/14 to 13/3/14 - 275MB (about 16MB per day)
Possible solutions to try
1) Get rid of K9 email for a while (I use it because the stock email app appears to be incompatible with my talktalk.net ISP email account - it receives but can't send).
2) Cache Wipe in Recovery (although I'm pretty sure I've done this once since the last OTA)
3) Remove and then re add my gmail account.
4) Factory Reset.
Before I commence anyone else experiencing this problem, or even better has had the problem and solved it!
Indeed I have the same issue, the one thing I believe that fixed it was turning off Google backup but I am not sure if is a permanent fix or a fix at all, since I renabled it. Try it!
Thanks, switched off Google Backup this morning, and that seems to have sorted it. Android OS only used 336KB of mobile data over 10 hours or so. I'll try and re-enable it later and see what happens.

Bah!
Turned Google Backup back on just before bed (thinking that 6-7 hours on wifi before going to work would be enough for it to do an initial backup) and then headed for work yesterday- Android OS chewed through another 20MB of mobile data in less than 2 hours.
So a simple disable/re-enable isn't the solution. I'll think I'll go for a Factory Reset. Checked my dates again and the problem definitely coincides with the OTA to 176.44.1 - I got it on the 25th.
Issue solved. Nothing to do with the OTA after all, although the factory reset gave me a valuable clue, when I noticed one of the things restored after a factory reset was my static wallpaper.....so Google Backup and Restore backs up the wallpaper, and I've an automation app installed set up to regularly refresh my wallpaper from the gallery. I created the routines on the 24th. Doh. Backup has been uploading multiple wallpapers everyday.
Tested today with the wallpaper switcher disabled and Backup and Restore enabled - no crazy data use and even better battery life than usual. Wallpaper switcher enabled and Backup and Restore disabled all is also fine. Both enabled gives crazy Android OS data use and noticeably more battery drain.

1st issue is with TWRP. When I was in the process of flashing twrp everything worked fine but, the battery was pretty weak so I powered the phone all the way down and plugged it into the charger. When the screen popped up with the battery charge, twrp splash screen was displaying behind the battery without telling the phone to boot into recovery.
The disclaimer from twrp is also displaying on manual reboots. (will post pictures when I get home)
2nd unrelated is with the HTC mail app. I 2 Gmail accounts linked (hate Gmail app), one Microsoft Exchange and 1 yahoo account. The Gmail accounts work fine and so does the Microsoft account. The yahoo account is showing me my junk/spam folder instead of the inbox. I've seen other problems similar after Google search but, they were with Microsoft and they were ALSO getting notified of spam box as well as inbox new mail. For me, my inbox items aren't displayed at all.
I'm running Cleanrom 1.1...
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The TWRP splash screen dispaying when charging the unit when powered down is a possible TWRP bug don't worry about it. As far as your mail goes I don't use anything but Gmail can't help you there, sorry.

Yeah, that was the only issue with twrp, was able to flash with no problems so, for now just cosmetic.
This mail app thing is more bothersome.
Let me ask u this about Gmail app... Did they give us the option to turn off "threaded view"? That was my biggest problem with it.

I had the same problem with mine, yahoo has their own mail app on the play store. It filters all the junk out like yahoo mail should.
Just in case the issue with the mail app is had by another, I found a solution here http://m.digitaltrends.com/mobile/htc-one-m8-problems/#!0rUpI.

Alright, here's another complaint about delayed notifications on OxygenOS, my OnePlus 7 Pro. Thing that really makes my phone unusable.
Please read the whole post so we can avoid tips like "aw, you can disable global battery optimizations in settings, also disable it for apps you want to get notifications for" because I have done everything found on threads as solution and nothing helped. Thanks.
I have tried to diagnose what the problem is in past few days as I saw that notifications on my phone aren't showing up at all. For ALL APPS, not only 3rd party. For NONE of the apps. Google services, Viber, Dropbox, Email, Instagram, 1st, 2nd, 3rd party apps.
I was reading about this problem on various forums found on google and first thing I discovered that this is mentioned as far as 2016-2015 which is very bad that such problem persists and isn't solved even in 2020.
Second thing, only solution I found mentioned as successful is "adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable". That suspected culprit is Android Doze, light sleep, deep sleep. That doesn't work for me.
Found only one post came to similar conclusion as me, but unfortunately nobody answered it. Here's what I managed to find out as I tried everything.
In my case problem isn't at all in phones (deep) sleep, Doze, battery optimizations, apps getting killed in background, etc...
I'm not receiving notifications ONLY WHEN MY PHONE IS CONNECTED TO WIFI. It takes only few minutes from when I put my phone on a table to stop receiving notifications! I can track that when I'm using PC, receiving and answering messages on Viber - nothing shows up at my OnePlus. Even after 15-30 minutes, hours, notifications aren't showing up on phone. What makes it worse: I receive message on Viber, get notification on PC, (I'm not opening message on pc for ex. 20 minutes) take my phone, use other apps - STILL DON'T GET notification. Until I open Viber (or any other particular app) only then it connects, refreshes and show up new messages!
And no, it's not problem in Viber, I took it only as an example because it's my main IM app, as I said notifications for all apps aren't getting trough: GMail, Instagram, Dropbox, you name it...
Another strange thing is that Google won't automatically sync it's services while on wifi. For example Keep notes, Drive and so on. When I go to settings > accounts > google account - auto sync is enabled and in details I can see that every single service is updated LAST TIME I WAS ON 4G.
Viber backup also won't upload it's messages to Google Drive while on WiFi. On 4G it syncs backup without problems.
As I said, all of these things work flawlessly while I'm on 4G. All this syncing and NOTIFICATIONS as well. Only on 4G.
I even tried connecting to different wifi routers, 5 GHz, 2.4 GHz and it behaves the same no matter what I do.
When I take my phone, disable WiFi and enable 4G I immediately get all the notifications that were delayed while on WiFi. So that's how I got to the conclusion it is problem with wifi, not deep sleep etc.
Other than receiving notifications, I use phone over the WiFi normally, without any bugs or glitches: YouTube, Instagram, Chrome... Just (push) notifications aren't getting trough, and I can see all of them being refreshed as opening them.
OnePlus 7 Pro is updated to the latest firmware, 10.3.
Once more, please read the whole thread. I hope someone from OnePlus will read it and help me solve this problem as device like this is absolutely unusable.

Exactly the same? Not receiving notifications only on WiFi but on 4G it works normally?
Update:
I have contacted live customer support yesterday, sent them this detailed info about the problem and they replied that already have this particular problem (with notifications not working on wireless network only) reported by many users and it's software problem in latest update of OxygenOS (mine is 10.3.0.GM21AA, should be latest). Assured me that they are aware of the problem and developers are working on it to be fixed in next firmware update. I hope update will come quickly and it will be solved indeed because not receiving notifications while on WiFi at all renders my OnePlus unusable!
I still have the same problem on my OP 8. I receive notification from Whatsapp only if I'm under 4G.
Hi,
So i just upgraded from the oneplus 7 pro, and have been having this issue since I upgraded about 2 months ago. My Gmail app will not show any new mail notifications until I open the app or manually refresh for mail not on the gmail server.
I've tried all the troubleshooting tips one does when someone has this problem, minus uninstalling/reinstalling gmail, and still nothing.
Here are some of my settings inside and outside of gmail, and my power saving settings for the phone.

It says I'm getting notifications throughout the day, but that's only when I manually go to the app and get them. I used to get push notifications as soon as I get an email on Gmail, and every hour on my yahoo acocunt, now that's nonexistent.
Does anyone have any idea what else I can change to finally get notifications working correctly? TIA!
I am having the exact same issue with my OP9. Not sure the cause, but I just switched to outlook. Now every notification comes through. My job uses exchange, so now I just have one email and calendar app for work and personal.
After several days use, I prefer outlook to Gmail/Google calendar.

One thing is make sure to clear the storage for Gmail. This way, when it does decide to start working again, you aren't hit with double notifications for everything.
Same here... I downloaded Spark, but it isn't good as Gmaill main app
Yes yes same here.
I have this problem since the first day I got my OP9
Sad but true (now using Outlook without problems)
FairEmail is great alternative. Not as pretty but works great. And protects your privacy
I had the same issue, other than deleting all Gmail's app data and setting the battery mode to non optimized for the app, what fixed it for me was going to
Settings>Apps and notifications>Special access for apps>Adaptive notifications>None
I do not claim credit for this solution, I found it on Reddit after hours of searching and unless it was something else that I changed I believe it was this that fixed it
I had the same problem. As a workaround I put a gmail widget on my homescreen so that the apps stays alive and syncs whenever I unlock. It's working great for now. Hope this gets fixed soon.
I think the latest update to OOS 12 fixes the GMAIL notification problem. Mine has been working since I updated about a week ago.

Is it still working?
I just got this thing yesterday and if I can't get Gmail and Calendar notifications it is going to go back because they worked fine on my Pixel 3 XL and I shouldn't have to switch apps when they always worked fine before.
I cleared the app data, disabled battery optimization, turned off adaptive notifications. I'm running out of ideas.
Everything has been mostly fine with this thing so far except the notifications.

This also could help
OnePlus 9 Pro user here. Currently on OxygenOS 13 and this issue still persists.
I've had this phone since the last three major versions and this issue has been always present. I've tried deleting cache/storage, updating app (plus restarting phone ofc) etc it sometimes fixes it but after a day or so notifications stop appearing again. I've just found this thread and the hint about Adaptive Notifications but what's funny is that this option doesn't even exist on Android 13 anymore?
Could anyone shed some light please as this is really getting ridiculous.
