Hey all,
Anyone noticed any recent abnormally high background data utilisation from Android OS (both wifi and mobile?).
UK XT1032, 16GB stock unrooted Tesco firmware currently on 176.44.1. Hangouts, Migrate, Google+, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies & TV, Google Play Games, Google Play Books, & Chrome all disabled. Google Backup and Automatic Restore are on, all of the other Google Services set to Sync automatically. I use Firefox as my browser (with a sync to my laptop Firefox).
I've looked back on the data records for my phone and it looks like the problem started around the 25th of February. This roughly coincides to the last OTA to 176.44.1 which I'm pretty sure I got on the 26th or 27th. The most recent Google Play Services (4.4.43) installed on 1/3/14. The only other thing I can think of is K9 Mail which I installed on the 24th, although I'm struggling to see how a User app could show data used under Android OS.
I've checked my other half's Moto G (8GB UK version - O2 variant, stock unrooted) and she hasn't got this showing up at all. I've compared Sync/Backup settings between the two phones and they are the same, and other than Chrome she has pretty much the same stuff disabled. She doesn't use Firefox, and uses the stock email app with an exchange account.

16/1/14 to 13/2/14 - 311MB (so about 11MB day)
13/2/14 to 25/2/14 - 71.2MB ( about 6 MB day)
25/2/14 to 13/3/14 - 0.93GB ( about 55MB per day)
Mobile Data
15/1/14 to 15/2/14 - 70.19MB ( about 2.5MB per day)
15/2/14 to 25/2/14 - 21.14MB (about 2MB per day)
25/2/14 to 13/3/14 - 275MB (about 16MB per day)
Possible solutions to try
1) Get rid of K9 email for a while (I use it because the stock email app appears to be incompatible with my talktalk.net ISP email account - it receives but can't send).
2) Cache Wipe in Recovery (although I'm pretty sure I've done this once since the last OTA)
3) Remove and then re add my gmail account.
4) Factory Reset.
Before I commence anyone else experiencing this problem, or even better has had the problem and solved it!
Indeed I have the same issue, the one thing I believe that fixed it was turning off Google backup but I am not sure if is a permanent fix or a fix at all, since I renabled it. Try it!
Thanks, switched off Google Backup this morning, and that seems to have sorted it. Android OS only used 336KB of mobile data over 10 hours or so. I'll try and re-enable it later and see what happens.

Bah!
Turned Google Backup back on just before bed (thinking that 6-7 hours on wifi before going to work would be enough for it to do an initial backup) and then headed for work yesterday- Android OS chewed through another 20MB of mobile data in less than 2 hours.
So a simple disable/re-enable isn't the solution. I'll think I'll go for a Factory Reset. Checked my dates again and the problem definitely coincides with the OTA to 176.44.1 - I got it on the 25th.
Issue solved. Nothing to do with the OTA after all, although the factory reset gave me a valuable clue, when I noticed one of the things restored after a factory reset was my static wallpaper.....so Google Backup and Restore backs up the wallpaper, and I've an automation app installed set up to regularly refresh my wallpaper from the gallery. I created the routines on the 24th. Doh. Backup has been uploading multiple wallpapers everyday.
Tested today with the wallpaper switcher disabled and Backup and Restore enabled - no crazy data use and even better battery life than usual. Wallpaper switcher enabled and Backup and Restore disabled all is also fine. Both enabled gives crazy Android OS data use and noticeably more battery drain.

Don't know if right area but I need some answers about my daughter's phone, she has the SGS2X with 6gb per month allowed unlimited texting and free calls after 6pm. This is the issue, from Aug 30th to Sept 8th her data went from 54.60mbs to 8200 and when we look at the bill it shows most of the downloads are happening between 12am & 6-8am and she's asleep plus she 98% of times downloads apps at home over our wifi or a friend's so I want to know if anyone can come up with any clues for me? Just to try something, yesterday the Telus guy took out her sim card and replaced it with another than said to not download anything so that's what we're doing till Monday.
Thanks

My guess is that she has WIFI tethering on perhaps.
Put the phone in airplane mode when she sleeps, there will be no data transferred.
This app is all free and makes life so much easier, check it out.

One question too is, u know that the ICS/4.0.3 comes with a Data watcher so won't that keep track or in reality should show the same or is this app link one more accurate?
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Ruby using xda premium
I found the inbuilt data manager for ICS was a pain to be configured, it would not let me input how much data I have already used, well it would but I had to scroll through each 1000mb = 1gb which is ridiculous, could not find an option to set previously used data in GB.
One more thing im running 4.1.1 so mine could be different, it was hard to set the billing cycle, flicking up and down on the touch screen, whereas the app lets you type in the dates.
My data manager would be a better option as it has extra alarms and a lot more user friendly, with different detailed views (ie the pie graph) of what you are doing with your data.
You can also keep track very easily by placing a 2x1, 3x1 or 4x1 widget on your homescreen as you can see in my pic the top left widget I have is 2x1
Has anyone heard of a SIM card being hacked or faulty cuz they took her old one out last week and the new one is not accumulating like the other at all, just exactly what she downloads off wifi so do u think the Telus store gave her a faulty card?
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
I've never seen a faulty SIM but theoretically its possible. Try taking it back to them and trying another SIM and see if that changes anything. Also, if she turns off wifi at night on her phone, anything like Facebook, Twitter etc. Uses mobile data still for syncing.

Yeah I mentioned that above that they have her a new SIM card and using 4G for the week, it only shows the actual downloads on 4G which it should so it has to be that the other SIM was faulty so I'll get her to do as u suggest as well but now have to prove it all to Telus cuz the old SIM accumulated over 8000mbs in less than half a month
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
It shouldn't be hard to prove. They can see how the data was used. If it keeps downloading on its own, have her turn off mobile data at night.

this app is supposed to allow you to take a backup of your app data from one android device and restore it in another android device.
Background:
I have galaxy s3 (i747), galaxy note 10.1 (n-8013), asus transformer prime (tf-201)
I play games on all three devices, and would like to sync progress in all three.
All devices are stock and unrooted.
Observations:
1) the only way to sync up without buying premium version is to start carbon server on all devices, and then log onto a chrome browser from pc.
While makin backups of apps, the carbon server kept crashing.
2) i was unable to restore games progress. The system always said restore completed successfully, but when i opened the game, it was not really restored.
I tried temple run 2 and hillclimb racing.. restore did not work.
3) most serious side effect - this app does not allow device to go in sleep and causes partial wakelocks. Drains battery.
Here is a screenshot of better batterystats when carbon was installed

I believe this app enables something in adb restore that keeps waking system to do backups.
My devices always went to sleep prior to installing this app... so this app was narrowed to be the culprit.
I uninstalled carbon from all my devices and rebooted... now my system goes to sleep!
See screenshot below, when my system is going to sleep finally!
I do not recommend installing this app.
Hope this revew helps.

Proof from my galaxy S3.
See attached image.. my phone drained out in 6hrs overnight with this app turned on. Uninstalling the app allows my device to sleep again.
Hi there,
I'm not sure, but it seems that a restart of the device after performing a backup can solve the problem (well okay..., that's more a workaround than a solution...). At least after a restart I had no further partial wakelocks of the *backup* listed in the BetterBatteryStats-app.

That's because backup needs to be re-enabled via ADB, using the Helium desktop app, after every reboot (on non-rooted devices at least).
I have Helium on my non-rooted SGS3 and have noticed the same thing but I'm not convinced that it's actually affecting battery life.
Hey,
I have a Fido RHD on the latest official ROM (no root or unlock). I have noticed over the past few weeks that the battery life has been a lot worse, but I can't think of any particular app that may be causing it. Strangely, Android OS is using a lot of CPU time and also sending data!
Things I have tried to do:
Stopped all the optiona "location services" for Google apps (e.g. Google Now)
Installed Snapdragon Battery Guru (but it is currently in learning mode)
Uninstalled all unneccessary apps
How can I find out what is hammering the "Android OS" process, and why it is keeping the phone awake? Is there a more advanced battery stats app that could help with this?

Hello Suman,
I have a similiar issue here. Android OS is not heading my battery stats, but it held the phone awake for a reasonably long time. You should try downloading BetterBatteryStats (the apk is available here in xda dev for free, but the developer did a nice work on it and the app is very useful, so I think you should support the developer if you don't mind). For a better understand of what's going on open BBS and set a custom ref before you go to sleep. Save the dump immediatly after you wake up. Post it here. Anyone that understand partial wakelocks will be able to give you a better support.
I have seen another guy here with a similar issue, but still unresolved. Also, I still have the problem, but my ROM is different (Vivo - Jelly Bean).
If you have received the update recently via OTA, you can try wiping data. Not sure if will help, but wiping data after receiving major updates is always a good and recommended practice.
Also, if you have instant upload on, turn it off. A bug seems to cause the instant upload to try syncing every minute so you'll have high times of SyncLoopWakelock keeping the phone awake most of the time. It happened to me. If a cloud backup of your photos is very necessary as it's to me I recommend Camera Uploads feature on the Dropbox app.
Let me know if something helps!

Ok, I will give BBS a go, thanks for the recommendation.
I did a factory reset as soon as I received the JB OTA (I always do this after any major software update). The Android OS problem did not start right after the update - it is a fairly recent problem.
I don't have Google+ camera upload turned on (but I do have Dropbox camera upload, as you suggested).
Thanks,

Hey,
Bit of a noob question I think... how exactly do I "use" BetterBatteryStats. I'm not sure how to set it up so it measures what I want it to.
This is what a full day's drain from 100% to nearly empty looks like at the moment:
Can anyone shed some light on my mystery battery thief please??!
Cheers,
Su

Sorry I'm a bit late, not that active on xda these days. Could you try Changing the grid size in launcher settings.
In Germany many of us have prepaid plans that get charged every 28 days (4 weeks). Is it possible to add an option to reset the data usage plan every 28 days (starting on a custom day) ?
Great app for monitoring data usage, but crashing often... (when running in background, in settings)
Could you add a monthly plan from date to date (ex: from 15 to 14 next month, or choosing an among of days).
Hi,
nice app. I like this kind of apps - one target, no senseless cross-site functions.
One thing:
If the week starts (here in Germany with Monday) for the other days the last week data are shown for the whole day.
On Tuesday everything is fine - Wednesday to Sunday are clean.
Hi,
So i just upgraded from the oneplus 7 pro, and have been having this issue since I upgraded about 2 months ago. My Gmail app will not show any new mail notifications until I open the app or manually refresh for mail not on the gmail server.
I've tried all the troubleshooting tips one does when someone has this problem, minus uninstalling/reinstalling gmail, and still nothing.
Here are some of my settings inside and outside of gmail, and my power saving settings for the phone.

It says I'm getting notifications throughout the day, but that's only when I manually go to the app and get them. I used to get push notifications as soon as I get an email on Gmail, and every hour on my yahoo acocunt, now that's nonexistent.
Does anyone have any idea what else I can change to finally get notifications working correctly? TIA!
I am having the exact same issue with my OP9. Not sure the cause, but I just switched to outlook. Now every notification comes through. My job uses exchange, so now I just have one email and calendar app for work and personal.
After several days use, I prefer outlook to Gmail/Google calendar.

One thing is make sure to clear the storage for Gmail. This way, when it does decide to start working again, you aren't hit with double notifications for everything.
Same here... I downloaded Spark, but it isn't good as Gmaill main app
Yes yes same here.
I have this problem since the first day I got my OP9
Sad but true (now using Outlook without problems)
FairEmail is great alternative. Not as pretty but works great. And protects your privacy
I had the same issue, other than deleting all Gmail's app data and setting the battery mode to non optimized for the app, what fixed it for me was going to
Settings>Apps and notifications>Special access for apps>Adaptive notifications>None
I do not claim credit for this solution, I found it on Reddit after hours of searching and unless it was something else that I changed I believe it was this that fixed it
I had the same problem. As a workaround I put a gmail widget on my homescreen so that the apps stays alive and syncs whenever I unlock. It's working great for now. Hope this gets fixed soon.
I think the latest update to OOS 12 fixes the GMAIL notification problem. Mine has been working since I updated about a week ago.

Is it still working?
I just got this thing yesterday and if I can't get Gmail and Calendar notifications it is going to go back because they worked fine on my Pixel 3 XL and I shouldn't have to switch apps when they always worked fine before.
I cleared the app data, disabled battery optimization, turned off adaptive notifications. I'm running out of ideas.
Everything has been mostly fine with this thing so far except the notifications.

OnePlus 9 Pro user here. Currently on OxygenOS 13 and this issue still persists.
I've had this phone since the last three major versions and this issue has been always present. I've tried deleting cache/storage, updating app (plus restarting phone ofc) etc it sometimes fixes it but after a day or so notifications stop appearing again. I've just found this thread and the hint about Adaptive Notifications but what's funny is that this option doesn't even exist on Android 13 anymore?
Could anyone shed some light please as this is really getting ridiculous.
