Really? TEP is a total ripoff. 10 bucks a month PLUS a $150 deductible on the off chance that you actually have to use it. Seems like kind of a questionable reason to sell your awesome new phone, especially when you can get a brand new one for $350. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

well see i like having insurance on every smartphone i ever had.. i really dont care what insurance it is.. all i kno is TEP.. do i want to sell my new phone.. na not really.. just want insurance on it that all years ago my evo 4g got stolen paid 100$ they sent me a brandnew phone... so 10$ a month really dont bother me much.. what happens if something like that happens to my new phone.. im *****d

I'd never buy insurance on a $350 phone but I have Worth Ave Group insurance on my son's iphone.

Why not set the $150 aside and then put away $10/mo as insurance?? You'd reach the outright purchase price of the phone pretty quick if you ever ran in to problems. It can't possibly be that hard to set aside some reserve in case your phone dies.

Sell the phone, then pay $450 for the same phone from Sprint, they'll let you pay $11 per month for high deductible insurance.
$450 cost of phone
$150 deductible if you lose it once.
$11 per month x 24 ? = $264
Spigen has both cases and screen protectors. http://stores.ebay.com/spigensgp/
I don't buy any other.
The insurance industry is working on your mind, now that you need insurance.

Totally rockin' the SlimArmor case on my N5! Fit's perfect and the buttons are great.

I bought my phone from Google had to go to Sprint to get the SIM card. Had the tech switch my evo 4g LTE to the Nexus. He asked if I want to keep my insurance and I said yes. He also said that it would go down in cost from $11 to just $8.

well u got lucky man.. cause i always had insurance since i been with sprint and when i switch from the s4 they said i had to switch my plan also cause i was on the 450 min plan.. so then i went with the my way new plan... then i talked to many reps and they all said they cant do it..??? they even credit me 20$ for the hassel..

I believe there are 3rd Party insurance companies you can go through. Sprint dropped mine too. But if something happens I'll just buy a new one outright.

You can't get tep only insurance for if its physically damaged or liquid damaged which is dumb. But I'm a technician for sprint so if your in northern Virginia I can try to help you the best I can. But it may change in the future I will let my higher ups know and get this addressed to try to help not only you but people with this phone cause I don't think its fair that if your speaker goes out that you would have to pay $53 or $75 once they change it for not having in store coverage which cannot be covered. I think with all the people I know I should be able to get something done I'll post back when I get something confirmed but rest assured I will get tep for this phone for everyone that wants it.

I activated my n5 today and they transfered my insurance no problem it actually went down to 8 a month instead of 11

The issue is the 32GB model, If you have the 16GB model you can get Sprint TEP on it, as I have it on mine and mine was bought from the play store, but anyone with the 32GB model will not be able to get Sprints TEP and will not be able to have sprint techs look at their phone in repair stores either, it's simply not supported. PS I am a technician at a corporate Sprint store

TEP is a ripoff. My credit card offers free coverage, as long as I pay my cell bill on it every month. $400 of coverage I believe, with something like a $50 deduct.

I work at the employee store and bought the 16gb version (obviously) and it wouldn't let me get tep so it may just be a temporary issue with RMS

Forget the fact that you have insurance, how many times have you had to claim insurance in all the years you had the smartphone? I had TEP for my HTC Touch Pro for almost 1.5 years back in 2009/2010 and I only claimed it once. To me it was a rip off and this was when it was still $7/mo. At $11/mo currently it is even more of a rip off. To add insult to injury the Galaxy Nexus 5 is only $350 unlike the GS4 or iPhone 5S which are $650-$700.

This is Amazon, much like WireFly,LetsTak and any other reseller they can price the phone at whatever price theyd like since they make comission off the monthly plans more so than the actual hardware. Theyll take a big hit ($200-$300) on the phone in order to make it back up with the plan.
BTW this is for new contracts only via Amazon, renewals are still $99 and Family is $149.
I just ordered one from Amazon for a penny. So long Sprint and so long samsung moment (blech)
I ordered mine from Amazon along with 3 other phones on a new family plan with 1400 minutes. Total cost after shipping: $.04.
makes me feel I made a mistake getting the phone in the first place. Good thing I like the phone.

Why would you feel like you made a mistake getting the phone if you like it just b/c the price went down? Hell, I paid $175 for mine (Family plan upgrade-secondary line) and I'm still happy with my purchase. I agree that it is annoying to see them offer such good deals for new users and screw over "loyal" customers though...
AT&T charged me $100, they gave me the $100 discount for being a loyal customer. Funny thing is i joined when the iPhone 3G came out.
I tried to get my wife to get it for 1 cent but she insists on getting the EVO, loyal yo sprint.

To be fair Amazon's a dealer like Wirefly. They make nothing on the sale of phones but get paid on selling the contracts. The Captivate is 99 dollars if you are renewing or adding a line on Amazon. Still a better deal than anywhere else. As a NEW AT&T customer I would have spent $199 on the phone at the AT&T store. I was all about to buy a Vibrant yesterday for 70 bucks on Amazon when I found the penny deal on the Captivate. So here I am.
Difference is, when you buy it from the AT&T store, they cover your warranty for the year - and their warranty is great.
If you buy it anywhere else, you have to deal with Samsung directly unless you get lucky and AT&T ships you a replacement regardless.

Not so much a mistake, I am happy with my purchase. It's just the price that we pay to get the best in tech before everyone else.
I've never done that before, and used to tout that my motorola karma was pretty much the same thing as a smartphone.
Obviously I had no clue what I was talking about.

It's what I was told from AT&T and when I spoke to Letstalk, Wifefly and so on. But FWIW, people have stated that they just called AT&T and they sent them a replacement - but that could just be a YMMV. I would try to verify as well before you add insurance in case you don't need to.
But for $.01, I'm jealous!
Amazon has such a great rep that I doubt they'd have entered the Wireless sales business without some assurances from carriers. Wirefly has a shady rep from what I was able to google.
i paid full retail cause i wasnt up for upgrade... and thats for two phones too.. -_-. bye 1000
The thing many of you guys are not realizing is that this price and other similar deals are for completely new accounts only. Upgrades or even new family plan lines will bump up the price to $100-150. Under the circumstances most of the people I know who paid for Captivates, they wouldn't have saved any more money if they had waited, as everyone I know who has a Captivate was already an AT&T customer.
And quite frankly, while the Captivate is a great phone, it's not worth putting up with AT&T over if you're on a good carrier, especially since there is/will be a Galaxy S for all major carriers.

True, but reading through Amazons policy, they only support the phone for 30 days - as do all online retailers besides AT&T itself (they have a full year). Other online retailers pass the warranty to Samsung. But for the period Amazon does cover it - they have great customer service.
I'm not saying that's bad as I never dealt with Samsung for warranty purposes. I just know that AT&T deals with warranty issues very well. But regardless, $.01 for this phone is an amazing deal. The chance of needing a replacement post-30 days might not even occur for you - and if it does - you can always try AT&T for replacement.

[Q] If I can get this off-contract for 200, should I?

I've never had an Android phone, but something tells me the Captivate won't be the phone to have for 2 years.
But is it worth getting for 200 dollars? To mess around with and experiment with? I mean I'd use it as my main phone and all, but it's gotten such bad press, I'm not sure what to think of it. Not to mention the guy I am buying it from is switching to Sprint or Verizon because of a lack of HTC Android Phones on ATT.
So, should I go for it? It is a brand new Galaxy S, or a refurbished one... I don't know actually. It is in a box that was sent to him to replace his bricked Galaxy S from when he canceled an update.
And, is the GPS really that bad? Considering my Touch Pro's GPS is horrible, I don't expect much!
Off contract? Yes.
If I could switch to Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile, I'd be goner than gone.
Go for it. It's a good deal.

Any chance you will share where you can get this phone for $200 off contract. I paid that for min on contract. I would love to get one for my wife but she has another year before she is eligible for an upgrade.
If you go to at&t's site, login and try to buy this phone without a contract they will charge you over $400.
hehe. i'm just gonna pay the breach of contract and switch to sprint for the evo or the epic. not sure wich, but i'm tossing mine up on craigs list. oh, and overstock.com is advertising them for .01 with new contract...
Paid $120 for mine after I called AT&T and told them that my crenelation is less than $100 or they can sell me the new phone for $120. The never thought twice and overnighted the phone to me for the $120.
I paid 230 for mine the first week it came out. I eventually went to best buy and got 80 bucks from them when they put it on sale
I paid $200 for mine. Totally worth it.
Coming from an x10 user, this phone is really good. Of course there is better, there always is hurting the price that you're getting is really good too.

Can I sell my new Skyrocket? Or will I receive a penalty? Help, very desperate.

Hello everyone,
Times are tough. I need my phone for work but at the same time I also need some cash. Sadly I have to stick with my old Captivate. My plan was to sell my skyrocket, which I am already falling in love with.
I renewed my contract with ATT today at a ATT authorized small carrier dealer (Chinese shop). They ended up giving me the skyrocket for free. But the guy warned me that if I tried to sell the skyrocket then AT&T will terminate my contract. On my contract with this shop (AWG in San Gabrial Valley, CA), it says if my contract gets terminated in any kind of way within 180 days then I will owe AWG $300 for each PCS line. I have a family plan. He said if I wait 2 months then I can sell the phone, but not to sell it right away and that I need to use the phone during this 2 month period. He also said if I had an iPhone I would have to keep it for 6 months!
I don't know if this is true because I see people selling phones on craigslist left and right. Does anyone have any advice for me? Would AT&T really terminate my contract just because I choose to use my old phone?
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST! I hope you guys can help me here.
Its not true u can sell it your stuck with the sim card and bill for 2 years but u can sell the device ive done it so have many many others. Thats the great thing about phones with sim cards u can sell or trade them at your discretion. I traded my sgs2 for the skyrocket.
You should be able to sell it. The phone its self is not bindingly tied to the sim card it has. People do it with iphones, and well, every phone out there. I don't think at&t would terminate you for selling a phone. Now, if you sold/lost your phone with the sim card still in it and someone were to rack up alot of charges, then yeah, you might be penalized. If you do intact get charged, att cancels your contract, your cat gets eaten by a dog that subsequently gets hit by a car that gets hit by a semi, don't blame me as, I just was browsing and chimed in

You Dont have to keep the data plan. Very common misconception.
Newter55 is correct. Remove that data plan and save yourself $25 (or $15) a month. As long as the line in question is active, you will be fine. I know going into corporate retail can be a major drag, but it beats dealing with authorized retailers... it seems like lately 95% of fraud gets tracked back to dealers... everytime I get manager escalation regarding fraud, its the first question I ask my customers.. and 9 times out of 10, it all goes back to them. The funny part is when u try to contact the dealer and they act like you are speaking Swahili lol...

Read your contract very carefully. If it's something like the contract that I signed with Amazon, if I remove my phone/data package within the first 6 months, I will get charged $250 (from Amazon, not from AT&T). This is partly because I got the phone for $.01, instead of $249 like I would have paid directly through AT&T.
This is usually only the case with e-tailers. I have not yet seen this type of thing from authorized retailer stores, but there's a first time for everything.
I work in customer care at ATT

That's exactly my concern is too. I got the phone from Amazon for $0.1 and I am thinking about selling it and getting either the LG Nitro or Samsung Note but I'm worried about Amazon charging me $250.
It all depends where you bought it; read your contract. Do you have a contract with just AT&T, or do you have one with your retailer as well? If you have a contract with your retailer, for instance Amazon has contracts, you will pay a penalty if you change anything or take the phone off the line, even if you change the number. If you don't have a contract with your retailer, then you just have to deal with AT&T--for instance you bought the phone at Best Buy or a Corporate store. They don't seem to care what you do, as long as you pay your bill. Be careful, many AT&T stores look corporate, but are actually third party retailers.
Again, read your contract/contracts. Don't trust the advice of people who haven't read YOUR contract.

I disagree completly i bought a tmobile phone from amazon and sold it no penality same with att. They dont even know you sold it amazon cant monitor you att acount too see if you changed devices on your account. You sir are wrong. That would mean if you had an old phone and wanted to pop your sim out of your new one and use the old one amazon would charge you 250 because ur not using that phonE. Amazon does not know they get money from ATT for selling you the 2 year contract.... if you terminate you contract before the 2 years then yes they can charge you for it

What's The Best Insurance To Go With

I was doing some research and was wondering what insurance everyone else is using. What is the best insurance company to g with and why?
I also was wondering does the Samsung galaxy S3 have a 1 year warranty like the iPhone?

I think almost all phones have a standard 1 year warranty. For insurance, i have Asurion through Verizon. However, there are others such as Squaretrade.
Anyone know how Asurion and Squaretrade insurance compares to Best Buy's insurance? I bought my GS3 at BB.
I am wondering also. Best buy told me they changed their warranty policy and do not try to fix the phone anymore, they just replace it.... I wonder if they lied?
I bought my phobe from ebay... Can i still insure it???
VERIZON GALAXY S 3
Asurion is more expensive than squartrade but asurion offers lost or stolen correct? can you insure with BB if you didnt buy it there?

Best Buy changed that a long time ago. I had the service plan on them with my old evo and I brought it in witha problem 4 or 5 times. I dropped it off, paid a $50 deposit and 2 or 3 days later I would get a basically new phone from them, drop off the loaner phone and get my deposit back. It's pricy ($10/mo) but it covers water damage, physical damage, defects and just about anything else. I just bought my GS3 there yesterday and got the service plan again and it's still the same coverage but they added a thing where if you trade in that phone when you are done with it you get $50 back on top of the trade in price. Pretty damned good deal if you ask me.

They said they would insure any new phone thats less than 30 days old. even if you didnt buy it there.
I use the best buy insurance. 10 a month on the 2 s3s and a g nex. If you get the full coverage and have an extra phone you can use you won't have to pay for a loaner phone. Also no deductible. Assurion is complete joke. 100 dollar deductibles and you will only get 2, YES 2 phones. I did this with my htc thunderbolt and received a letter in the mail from them stating that my insurance is dropped because I reached the 2 phone limit.
Insurance? What's that? I've never carried it lol.

I was looking at ensquared.com, does anyone have any experience with them?

For better or worse, it seems that Verizon treats you differently if you have insurance through them/Asurion. A couple of years ago, I was having a problem with my LG Voyager and took it in to them. They told me it was a known problem with the phone, and they were going to let me pick from three other phones right there at the store.
A co-worker's wife had the same phone with the same problems, so I told them to go in and try and get the replacement. When they went in, they were told they couldn't get a free replacement phone like I did, and that it was because they didn't have the insurance on the phone.
I've used insurance enough in the past to warrant me continuing to use it, so when I heard this, I figured I'll just stick with Verizon's Aurion insurance due to the benefits that possibly come with it.

This.
I've also been eying ensquared. It looks like the best, but I'd like to hear if anyone has experience with them.
The BB insurance seems like the way to go. So basically for $10 a month you continually drop your phone, and you will get a brand new device each time? Not that I would do that, but it would be nice to have that piece of mind instead of having to worry so much about your phone...
I will definitely be buying my next phone from them if they don't change this policy.

VZ rep told me a $199 deductible. When I started laughing at her, she said it was an $800 device. I declined.
Okay ya it asurion is a 100 dollar deductible but it covers lost and stolen phones. No other does that I know of without having a deductible. Best buy is 10 dollars a month combine that with asurion so your covered if its lost or stolen. That's 17 dollars a month or 204 dollars year. 2 year contract that's 408 dollars.

Even if you buy it somewhere else you can still insure it with them within 30 days.

T-Mobile Phone Insurance

Let me start off by saying this is no BS when I purchased my blaze from T-Mobile over a year ago I bought the monthly insurance plan, and when I over hacked/mod/customized my phone to the point it was rebooting nonstop and no solution I simply went into T-Mobile store and told them my phone was defective now I was expecting to pay a deductible of $140 as according to their policy and guidelines but to my surprise I had the premium $7.99 or 8.99 (can't remember exact amount) insurance plan and they simply exchanged my blaze for $5! the T-Mobile Rep also told me I had no limit on the amount of times I could exchange my device! So fellow blazers get the insurance plan and it might one day save you money and stress.
Just saying since you never know what could go wrong while hacking and modding our phones.

You could also look at it as you paid $101/$113 for the replacement phone. Just saying!

Eh I could see that way too but had I known I could exchange it for only $5 I'd exchange my phone every 3 to 6 months

Kids these days...
Even though you could potentially use the insurance program to get a "free" phone every few months, I'm sure T-Mobile would flag you as an abuser and be less likely to swap one out in the future, at least without making you pay your deductible.
