Having horrible battery drain with wifi running wakelock, even though the wifi is off..If you have the same problem like me, you can easily save more battery with the step below: ( don't know if it been share by anyone here )
- Settings ---> More ---> Security ----> Security Update Service
Uncheck ( Via Wi-Fi only ) Both ( Auto update security ) if you like..
Manage to get under 0.% per hour. ( wifi running remain )
Addition*
- Settings ---> More ---> Location Services
Uncheck ( Use wireless networks )
Please share any other solution if found
Thank you I will try this.
I greenified all my apps. No i see my wifi shuts off when im on deep sleep. Because when i wake my phone up it shows me that he connected to my wifi.

If you are still showing WiFi connected in battery usage, use the following steps
CONNECTIONS - WiFi
ADVANCED OPTIONS -
1. Uncheck 'Scanning Always Available'
2. Keep WiFi on....... - Check 'only when plugged in'
Enjoy longer battery life........

Nice fine..
Option 1, seem to remove the wifi running from bbs.
Thank you. I am now trying these settings. i turned off the security and location settings you mentioned. What exactly will happen if these are off? Will i lose any functionality?
i wonder if certain apps have the ability to turn this feature on? for some reason i just randomly started getting this terrible battery drain from wifi and google services and im thinking this is the cause and i have not done any updates lately... hmmmm

Wakelock of Google services
Hi all,
I've been fighting with this issue for a while on my I9502 and just recently came to a solution. I use wakelock detector, and it was showing pretty much 95% of the time the phone was awake. I did the Wifi auto scan off thingy, and a few others which did help, but what ultimately helped me with the "google services" caused wakelock was:
Google Play Store -> settings ->
Notifications OFF
Auto update apps OFF
Require password for purchases ALWAYS
My Wifi is still on and running, exchange account (push) and gmail syncing, location services on both wifi and gps. And the phone is in deep sleep when I turn off the screen. Mind you, I have only the following apps on the main screen: Weather Pro, Smooth calendar at the moment. I will try what happens if I put back google now.
I hope it helps some of you.
Off you Wifi when not in use. We tend to forget these things which is why the battery's charge goes down.
use wlan guest mode if ur router supports it and connect only ur phones/tablets in it.
my router does not support it but i bought a second router for 15 euros which is behind my old router now.
like this i almost loose no battery at all over night.
this wlan_rx_wake crap was driving me crazy since i got my first s2 3 years ago. since i got this new router everything is perfect.
if u want to know which router it is please let me know i will post it then
thanks mate you saved my day !!!! i installed greenifiy and i hibernate most of my appsand games expect facebook and telegram, messanger, whatsapp, line , app lock , vault , titanum backup, trickster mod , freedom, device manager, wifikey viewer
any notice you could tell me about my current configuration

Quite a handy app, turns off wifi/data when your screen is off, but can be set to periodically switch on and sync. Can also set it not to connect when u just switch your screen on (to check the time say).

wlan guest mode an option some routers have. u can enable it and will have a second wlan network online.
it's not connected to the other network so everyone who will use this network is exlcuded from the primary home network.
mostly it's meant for guests so they can do what they want and u don't have to be scared that ur network will get infected with some sh*t.
but in this case u can use it to exclude ur phone from ur primary network and give it his own network.
on ur pc check ur network traffic with wireshark.
u will get so many arp, ipv6 and multicast traffic... android mostly isn't capable to handle it.
atleast it seems that way because all of this will trigger wlan_rx_wake.
it's even worse when u got a network printer and a samsung smart tv (arp requests like every second)

Thanks for the explanation, I have checked and my router does have a guest network mode, will set this up and give it a try to see how it goes. As I am connected constantly to Wifi when at home and also at work. I can do a good comparison as I have exactly the same router at work as at home, but I can try out the guest network at home to see what the wakelocks are like.

Hello All,
Is anyone working on this or interested in this? I am really needing this to make WP work for me as the 3G connection is terrible and causing significant power drain.
Thanks.
Can you tell me what the problem is? Because I have no problems in toggling WiFi on and leaving it all day. Of course, I'm forced to use 3G when there is no hotspot or I have no signal from my router, but there's no problem in leaving that on.
Spaqin he means that wifi turns off when screen is blocked
djdurance currently you can only set screen block time to infinity by patching the registry
Thank you. Are you able to provide a link for the registry edit?
Sent from my SGH-i937 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
On most phones you don't even need a registry tweak to set the screen lock time to "Never". However, doing so will destroy your battery life as the screen never turns off, and is one of the main power consumers on the phone. So far as I know (and I might be mistaken) there's no hack yet that lets you use WiFi while the phone in unplugged and the screen is off.

Here you go m8 .. Alot of reg tips there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907971
There is no hack but if power use is what you are concerned about just turn battery saver on, you will have to manually sync email and a few other things but your battery will last you days. Also another thing you try try is setting you phone to use edge only since your 3g is terrible anyways and that will save you battery as well.
it would be nice if we could make wifi stay on under lockscreen, I work in a school that gets absolutley no cell phone signal inside. but we have wifi in the whole building. Too bad i cant toggle off my data connection and wifi would just stay on.
MS needs to implement this especially for business users that would possibly be connected to a private network or something.
Install Spotify, then turn it on and press start (home) and as long as Spotify will run in the background wifi will be ON. Depending on the ROM you have is need to have checked in andvanced configuration ''Don't dehydrate apps on pause'' .
ok... I will try that. Such a pain to keep that in the "open" list of apps...
One thing that will improve with Tango hopefully... Although I'm not holding my breath. Windows Apollo I guess.
It works fine with Spotify. the battery lasts longer with the network data off, because at my house the reception is poor.
Any reported results here?

Introducing LeanDroid:
LeanDroid is a lightweight and incredibly powerful battery saver. It automatically manages the power-hungry radios on your device while the screen is off to significantly lengthen battery life.
Get the most out of your device with the most advanced and efficient battery saver! The no-frills battery saver that actually works!
Features:
-Automatically disables Wi-Fi
-Automatically disables cellular data (root only on Lollipop+)
-Automatically disables cellular radio (root only on Lollipop+)
-Automatically disables Bluetooth
-Automatically disables network location (KitKat+, root only on Lollipop+)
-Automatically disables GPS location (KitKat+, root only on Lollipop+)
-Automatically switches cellular network mode (Lollipop+ and with root)
-Periodically restores connections for sync
-Schedule when LD should be active with the time exception
-Set exceptions for when certain apps are running
-Set exceptions by Wi-Fi name
-Set exceptions by Bluetooth device
-Set exceptions by data transfer speed
-Many more options
-No ads
It can disable WiFi, Cellular Data (2G, 3G, LTE)*, Cellular radio*, Bluetooth, and Location* (networks and GPS) after a certain time with the screen off to conserve battery power and lower data usage. Connections are restored when the screen is turned back on or unlocked, as well as periodically, to allow for notifications to come in. LD will only re-enable connections that it disabled, not all of the selected connections. There are many additional options to set to your preference.
If you have an issue, please email [email protected], or use the contact menu option from the app before leaving a negative review!
Some options explained:
Disable Wi-Fi/Data/Network mode except if active - Connections are only disabled if there is negligible data transfer while the screen is off. Some music services don't "stream" but instead download entire songs at once, and they might do this while the screen is still on. Please set the disable time interval to at least the length of your average song so LD can catch data activity while the screen is off or use the except if "Except if apps running" option.
Disable Wi-Fi except if browser has web login - WiFi is not disabled if it requires a browser login (common for public hotspots or guest networks), so that you do not have to re-enter the password when it is re-enabled.
Disable Wi-Fi except if requires browser login - WiFi is not disabled if it requires a browser login (common for public hotspots or guest networks), so that you do not have to re-enter the password when it is re-enabled.
Disable except if apps running - No connections are disabled if one of the selected apps is found to be running in the foreground or has foreground services. There is a sub-option to also detect background services of the apps.
Restore Data after waiting xx seconds for Wi-Fi to connect - Wait for WiFi to connect before re-enabling cellular data. This prevents data from re-connecting for just a couple of seconds.
Tasker intents
com.teqtic.leandata.INTENT_START_SERVICE
com.teqtic.leandata.INTENT_STOP_SERVICE
* Note:
-Not all options are available on all devices.
-If you are on Android 4.4.1 - 4.4.2, a persistent notification is required due to a bug in KitKat where services cannot restart themselves once killed by the system. If you would like to hide the notification, find LeanDroid in Settings -> Apps, and un-check "show notifications".

You mean so that you can tell how long they were turned off for? Good question, there's gotta be some app that can pull up those statistics. For WiFi, you can check your battery usage chart.
Thanks for the feedback, rate it on Google Play if you get a chance. Bugs, suggestions and feature requests are welcome!

Suggestions:
1. When im playing few multiplayer games like Heroes of Order and Chaos etc, i usually tend to leave my phone aside for one or two min, so with my current setup where the radios are turned off after one min, the internet might get disconnected hence me loosing the game. So if there is a feature which can check if there is data transfer then dont turn off the radios. Same goes with me downloading some files and the radios might turn off causing the download to fail. - I guess it is answered in the description, my mistake
2. Where it says turn on radios to sync/receive after a specific time period, is thee way to only switch on the 2g network to save more juice?
Questions:
1. When the radios are turned on after the specific time period to sync, do all the radios get turned on?
2. Does it already check if there is data transfer and then turn off the radios ?
Edit: Rated the app on Play Store

Suggestion responses:
1. While the screen is on, the connections are never turned off. The time "after" is time after screen off (explained in help dialog or on Play Store).
2) No, there is currently no option to do that. I wouldn't recommend it either. 2G/Edge is so slow it wouldn't even be able to connect and do anything in the brief time it has to sync.
Question responses:
1. Nope, only the connections that were turned off by the app. I will update the app description to make this more clear.
2. Yes I believe right now it is set to a threshold of about 2kB/s. If within the period that it checks, the data transfer is more than this, it will not disable WiFi/data.

Yes, but LeandData stop traffic also if tethering is on. In this case every time you have to switch on 3g again and reconnect your notebook.

Yes, please check for me as this could potentially be a bug. What did it turn off? It should not turn anything off if the device is charging. Also, if you connect a charger after the app has already turned off connections, it should turn them back on. Please ensure you haven't left any other similar apps running. The WiFi turning off with the screen off could also be a system option.
If you do indeed find a problem please let me know what Android version you are running. You can also check the Logcat if you filter for LeanData. Tell me what you see around the time of the problem.

On my S5, all saved wifi connections were visible in the wifi settings page. On the S7, it seems that only the connections within range are visible. It seems that there is no way to delete a saved wifi connection once it goes out of range. Anyone know how to do this?

Exactly the same issue here. Anyone got any workarounds (non-root)? Third party apps don't seem to work. Pretty ridiculous that you can't forget a saved network and causes a serious issue for me: I have to change my password at work and can't forget the WiFi AP before getting to the office so I'm locked out of my work account...
It is a bit annoying but I can't see how it's a problem?
How are you locked out of your work account?
You can change password when you are in range.
What's the other issue?

The problematic are Hotel / Airport / etc. Hotspots...
When i received my S7 i "load" an backup from my old android phone... I few days earlier i returned from a long holiday trip and so the "restore-backup" created a lot of hotspots an my S7 i never never need and i'm not able to delete ....
(OK - i can start for a second trip, visit all places and delete hotspot when connected... ) <-- ironic

We use exchange authentication for WiFi at work. The phone automatically tries to connect using the old password as soon as i'm near the office. Does this three times and locks my ability to use the WiFi. This is before i have chance to see it and forget it in the WiFi settings. Such a simple omission in the UX makes this even an more annoying issue.
Yeah OK the work thing sounds a bit troublesome. I would turn off wifi before I go then turn it on when I'm ready and forget the network before it connects.
...
The holiday wifi hotspot thing i don't get still.
Why is that a problem? You can't see the networks anyway. Is it just an ocd thing?
well you have a drastic option, if nothing else works

The problem with the holiday Hotspots is at least not a real problem... But I don't like this.
I would prefer a function to delete Hotspots even when I'm not connected to them...
(maybe it is small security issue, because a common SSID can be used to connect with my phone...)
Wifi Manager - choose Known network, then remove.
I reported this to Samsung support. That's the only way to get them to fix it. The more people report it, the more likely they are to fix it sooner.
As for whether it's a "problem", I suppose it's not immediately a show stopper. However, after only a couple of weeks, I accumulated a lot of hotspots that clutter up the restrict networks page. Who knows, if too many build up it could cause an problem. There is no reason for Samsung to have implemented it in this way. I've never seen a device (mobile or pc) that did this.

Thanks, but Android 6 only allows you to forget those networks that you've connected to using the same app. So you can only forget those that you connected to with WiFi Manager, not the in-built settings.

Edit: you're correct. I think root and find where file or db that stores the SSID would be the next option.
Edit 2: Get a root editor, backup /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf, then edit it to either remove the entire SSID entry, or set autojoin to 0. There may be root apps that does this.
The plain text passwords are also stored in that supplicant file.
I don't think there is any non-root solution until Samsung changes the Wifi settings to show out-of-range SSIDs. I agree that it is silly for it to not do have this feature at all.
2 solutions so far (?)
Hi,
if you have a non rooted S7 there is no build in possibility to delete the saved wifi connections if you are out of range. Samsung has to fix this in my opinion.
With Marshmallow you can only delete wifi networks with the same app you created them, so third party apps like wifi manager do not work. So far there might be two solutions which work, both are far away from being perfect.
- First solution is to delete ALL network connections...and start from the beginning (1. Go to settings -> 2. Bakup and reset -> 3. Reset network settings -> 4. Follow on screen instructions)...including bluetooth etc.
- Second solution is not fine either. Take a third party app like wifi manager from Kostya on play store and list all known networks. Then set up a (fake) wifi access point with the SSID you want to delete. Once they are in range, you can delete the saved wifi connection. You have to repeat this for every SSID you want to delete.
Best regards,
Alexander

can not remove!
I updated my S7 today (with Sprint) to Android 7, and they fixed this. Out-of-range WiFi networks are listed under the "Manage Networks" options and can be removed from there.
I assume it's a silly question, so if you feel in the right mood, just flame me Whenever I walk around I meet a lot of open Wi-FI networks, since one italian ISP is now giving out everyone routers which belongs to FON network. My S7 automatically connect to those wifi, but they need you to register to a website to use them, so either I turn wifi off, Or i must wait to be out of range before I can once again use my 3G/LET connection. Is there a way to avoid S7 to connect to open networks and just to known Wi-Fi?
Thanks in advance!
Turn it off when you are not using it, this also helps to save battery.

Thanks both. I know I can turn wifi off and can even use app like juice to turn on/off with GPS, but I can't believe that there is no more an option to prevent auto-connect to unknown networks. Besides being annoying, it's also a security issue

Samsung Italy just replied me, they are experiencing the same annoying situation, and they say it's android 6 that has removed this option. Suggestion is: turn off wifi. Sadly I have to admit that in this situation , iPhone wins. I just will turn wifi off, but in year 2016 being forced to always manually do something looks a bit silly.

In the past i used this app for different reason ( battery optimization )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53060491#post53060491
It will disable wifi when the wifi network is unknown or not config in the app........when I used it worked really good
Let me know how it goes
Thanks for the support, will have a look!
I have been using the app Llama for years, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kebab.Llama
I have it learn my home cell towers and turn wifi on/off when I enter/leave the area. On AT&T phones there is a setting to auto connect to their Hotspots which I have set to off.

Llama looks funniest app name ever! testing it right now, will make him to learn adn see, thanks for the hint.
A simple app to check whether your WIFI is connected or not. It then disables your WIFI when no connection is found (i.e. keeping your WIFI from hogging battery when not in use).
Also turn your WIFI "ON" once then turn it "OFF" later without the check intervals. Check FAQ for the explanation.
*NOTE - Check FAQ below or In App if you have any issues*
*Built-in FEATURES*
- Set how long it takes to check
- Set when to check
- Set the minimum signal strength required to connect
- Show surrounding AP info while scanning in the background & AP info when connected
- Disable WIFI when no internet connection is found
- Do a manual check
- Other minor features
Download it from XDA Labs - https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/wifi.checker.rf

Feedback is much appreciated, whether it's bugs you experience or would like to see a new feature.
FAQ
1) "I want to automate my WIFI Connection, but without the checking intervals" - Easy, just set the time you want your WIFI to turn "ON" & "OFF" using the "Time to check:", then disable the check interval & lastly disable the "Notifications" in the "Notification Config" tab.
2) "I'm getting unreliable checks when the screen is off" - There is no built-in way around battery saving features/apps, so you'll need to whitelist the app in Battery Optimization/Greenify/Doze or any other battery saving app (it will not drain your battery, promise!)
3) "Even though i whitelisted the app i get unreliable checks (using a Sony Device with Stamina Mode Enabled)" - I do not have a workaround other than whitelisting, it is difficult to build support when i do not have a Sony Device to test on.
4) "WIFI turned off even if an Internet Connection is available" - Try disabling the ability to check for an Internet Connection under Extra Config tab.
5) "Please publish on Google Play" - I will publish on Google Play as soon as i have the available funds for a Developer Registration Fee.
6) "Do i need a Rooted Device" - No, Root is NOT needed
Changelog (v3.6)
* Improved WIFI switch when time ends
* WIFI now switched on when check time starts, instead of starting from an "Off" state
* Fixed incorrect variable shown on check titles
* Fixed boot check to run only when necessary
* Other minor bugs squashed and code improvements
Is it similar to WPS connect or Wifi master key? I am using WPS connect and it runs smoothly. It is available at this: http://goo.gl/KgWm9s

I am not sure, will download them and have a look.
But in short, the app uses your saved WIFI networks (it does not connect to any open Access Point/Hotspot automatically). You specify when it should check, then it checks if there are any saved Hotspots in range and connects to it for you automatically (if there are no saved Hotspots in range, it automatically disables your WIFI until the next check).
Every time it checks it also saves a list of Hotspots picked up with their security, signal strength, mac address etc. (different details are also shown when connected to a hotspot for example: ip address, speed of connection, etc.)
This app is actually designed for an automated WIFI connection.
Is it a known bug that this app does not work reliably when the screen is turned off?
Thanks in advance

It is a known bug, because i have not found a way around other Battery Saving features yet.
[EDIT]OP has been updated[/EDIT]
You'll see in the OP i said that you should add "WiFi Checker" as an exception (whitelist) in any battery saving app that you may have installed. That includes Android's built-in Battery Optimization / Doze Mode. Also if you have a Sony Device with Stamina Mode enabled, you will have problems if the app is not whitelisted.
Let me know if the issue persists then i'll look into it for you.
publish on google play
I suggest you publish on Google play store

Thanks for the suggestion.
I will publish on Google Play as soon as i have the available funds for a Developer Registration Fee. Currency is very weak in the country now, therefore i can't spare the fee at this stage.
In the meantime: Any person that doesn't have the XDA Labs app installed, i've added a link in the OP to the app on the XDA Labs website. :good:
I will leave a message here as soon as it's on Google Play.
Would it be possible to implement something like: when the user turns off wifi manually, so the service of your apps stops and continues only when wifi is turned on by the user again.
I'm asking, because sometimes I have a bad wifi signal at my grandparents house and have to switch to mobile network so I can receive my notifications punctually instead of a 15 minutes delay. When I switch off my WiFi, your app re-activates my WiFi after some time for a scan (that's actually the purpose of your app haha) and the problem I've already said occurs.
Could you look into that?
Thanks in advance
