Is anyone working on this or interested in this? I am really needing this to make WP work for me as the 3G connection is terrible and causing significant power drain.

Can you tell me what the problem is? Because I have no problems in toggling WiFi on and leaving it all day. Of course, I'm forced to use 3G when there is no hotspot or I have no signal from my router, but there's no problem in leaving that on.
Spaqin he means that wifi turns off when screen is blocked
djdurance currently you can only set screen block time to infinity by patching the registry

On most phones you don't even need a registry tweak to set the screen lock time to "Never". However, doing so will destroy your battery life as the screen never turns off, and is one of the main power consumers on the phone. So far as I know (and I might be mistaken) there's no hack yet that lets you use WiFi while the phone in unplugged and the screen is off.

There is no hack but if power use is what you are concerned about just turn battery saver on, you will have to manually sync email and a few other things but your battery will last you days. Also another thing you try try is setting you phone to use edge only since your 3g is terrible anyways and that will save you battery as well.
it would be nice if we could make wifi stay on under lockscreen, I work in a school that gets absolutley no cell phone signal inside. but we have wifi in the whole building. Too bad i cant toggle off my data connection and wifi would just stay on.
MS needs to implement this especially for business users that would possibly be connected to a private network or something.
Install Spotify, then turn it on and press start (home) and as long as Spotify will run in the background wifi will be ON. Depending on the ROM you have is need to have checked in andvanced configuration ''Don't dehydrate apps on pause'' .

One thing that will improve with Tango hopefully... Although I'm not holding my breath. Windows Apollo I guess.
It works fine with Spotify. the battery lasts longer with the network data off, because at my house the reception is poor.
Any reported results here?

I am curious, but the only way I can think of to ask this question is to provide an example or two, so bear with me.
You decide you need directions. Fire up Google maps, click my location and it says you need to enable data...DOH!, back out to the menu (or follow the prompt), enable either GPS or Data, and go back into maps. Get what you need, and then leave Maps. Dont forget to turn the GPS or Data back off!
Wouldnt it be better if when you enter Google Maps, it would fire up the GPS or Data connection automatically? And when you back out or have a period of inactivity, disable it.
Same thing with the internet, I know Locale and others can turn on and off the wifi depending on where you are, but, for example, when I am home I rarely need wifi. However, when I open the internet it would be great if it looked for a friendly wifi signal and tried to connect if possible. That way you are always connecting the fastest possible method for your application and doing the least amount of work. If the disconnect would be an issue (since none of the programs has an exit button) maybe a variable timer could be set, or maybe base it off of inactivity.
Like I said, they are just ideas, and I have never understood why nobody (WM for example) has ever implemented anything like this. It seems like it would help conserve battery power and at the same time greatly simplify things.
When you put the G1 to sleep it shuts off the wifi connection automatically, then when you turn it back on, it reconnects to the network if you're still near it.
I have always wondered why Google Maps doesn't turn on GPS when it needs it. It does on the iPhone as far as I know. I have really wanted this to happen for awhile but I just figured Google would be the ones to add it.

Yeah I wonder why also, maybe they were in a rush or some battery issue. also iphone doesn't have gps just the cell location I usually keep that on.

I use WiFi, but almost only when I am home. And then most of the time I am on a charger while using the phone.
I am wondering what it would take to make it so you could select the option to have WiFi shut itself off once you left the network you were currently connected to.
Scenario is, I am connected to my home WiFi. I grab my phone and run out the door. It would be nice if the WiFi would power off once I was disconnected from my home network for say, 15 minutes or so.
I guess I am just lazy, but I so often forget to turn off the WiFi till my battery alert comes on later in the day!
A good app is Y5 from the market, give it a try....its only 32.23 kb
i understand its not perfect, or exactly what your looking for. I figured that maybe you haven't tried this app.

Thanks for the tip. I d/led and will give it a try. I searched around Market before I posted, but didn't really even know what to look for!
But on another note, it would be nice to see similar functionality built into the wifi settings. I.E. Shuts off when lost signal for 5 mins...etc. Is it even possible to build extras into the settings(app)?

HA! i was about to say that.... Yeah dude, locale is what you need.
Y5 is what u need, isnt locale based off time? I may b wrong about [email protected] But Y5 turns off ur Wifi as soon as u r not in range of any remembered networks, and turns it back on when u r.
No, Local and be used based on time, location, and many other variables to not only change wifi state but other things as well, like gps or volume.
Battery usage from WiFi when not connected to a network is minimal, and even so nil when the phone is in standby.
Unless you are having problems with it auto connecting to every WiFi you come across and syncing stuff?
Use WiSync it nags you if you leave a WiFi network and leave it on.
Alternatively you could use Wapdroid which turns your WiFi on and off based on previous results scanning in a given cell zone. ( determined by triangualtion )

In pre-mango WP7 phones the WiFi would automatically turn off if your phone was on battery and screen was off. Is this stupid feature still present in Mango or can we make WiFi run ALL THE TIME on battery power?
Yes, it is. But it reconnect looooot faster.
Wow thank God I actually remembered to ask this before wasting money on a WP7. I don't care how fast it reconnects when it wont be connected in standby. Which means I wont be notified of emails, IMs, social network updates etc etc. Brilliant decision MS.
I think you're missing the point, it recconects every so often in standby to download messages/emails/notifications etc it just doesn't stay constantly on.

Don't know if this is a troll or just a lack of understanding.
You can determine in the options how often you want to to check your various email accounts. For example, one of my accounts I only need checked every hour, while another one I have check ever 15 minutes.
Social network updates are pushed to the phone in real time. I just got a FB notification and the comment had only happened 30 seconds prior.
IM works real time like text.
MS knows what they're doing.

I guess your machine will juiced out within 6 hours if your run WiFi all the time, which is simply no point. I don't think you will charge your phone every 4-5 hours or bring 5-6 batteries along with you.
Phone will turn on WiFi only when you are going to use the internet (while screen on) or when receiving the mails/messages as scheduled (while screen off), so you can still receive your mails and messages when it is idling.

I think his problem is that he's lacking a data contract(?) In that case he can't get any real time updates, but it should still connect to Wi-Fi for the periodic checks.
Yeah, it will still connect for email. I ran wifi only for a few months.

It is still connected on WIFI. I use it since using Mango Dev.
WiFi is a little different in mango. If I am using last.fm and turn off the screen, WiFi stays on instead of switching to 3g. Nodo would turn off WiFi.
Few things to note:
Wifi will drop at screen lock if its not utilized. It will sign you out from your messenger and stop receiving emails etc.
If you have DATA (edge or 3G) that will keep the connection alive.
If you have plugged in your phone to a electric socket then and ONLY then the wifi will stay alive at screen lock.
Wifi drops in about 30sec at screen lock.
Android drops wifi at screenlock by default, BUT you have an option under settings to keep it alive. iPhone prior to iOS4 used to drop wifi at screenlock but not anymore and has no impact on battery life what so ever. 3G consumes more battery than Wifi.
wp7 mango is amazingly fast, but no OS is perfect. Probably in future it will be much better. For now if you are dependent on chat, email and other notification then wp7 and Data package work gr8.
All radios im the RTM are sinked, the system will use WiFi if available, and does real time updates. Aging WiFi, GPS, 3G, BT all on when not needed it is plain stupid and will kill your battery in no time. If anyone desires this get Android, there you can turn everything on till your device stops responding altogether... Embrace the way WP works, lots of taught has gone in for someone to simply criticize it like so... I think ur a perfect android customer....

If my Android can last one whole day with Wifi on 24 hours(Galaxy S2) then WP7 should last longer. WiFi radio DOES NOT consume a lot of battery. Please get these retarded Android thoughts out of your mind. I'm not exactly aiming for the moon here. All I want is to get my push notifications AS THEY HAPPEN.
Someone mentioned in this thread that it periodically reconnects even with screen off to check for updates. Well if that's the case then I can forget about push notifications right? Because for those to work I'll need internet access on my phone constantly and not on periodic intervals.
I'm not trolling here. This was a genuine problem for me on my old WP7 device. The phone would disconnect WiFi when in standby. I have a perfectly fine working internet connection at home and I'm not about to sign up for an expensive data plan from my cellular network provider.
What I need to know is will I get IM push notifications, email push notifications
on WiFi when my screen has been off for a longer period of time? If I'm not then what exactly is the reason behind this? Does MS except everyone to have a data plan?

The simple answer is yes. It's Windows Phone. It's intended to work with a data, voice, and text plan.

well if that's the case then is there any app that I use to limit what app can use how much data and what app can use what kind of data (wifi or cellular?) Because if there isn't then its just a ticking time bomb before I get a bloated bill at the end of the month

It's a smartphone so... yes. That's why smartphones are usually sold with data plans and that's why Microsoft implemented cloud services like Skydrive and Zune Pass.

Let me make this easy for you... WP7 is not for you and you should stick with your Galaxy S2 which is a great phone anyway.
OK so I have had it with this issue. I work at a college and they have eap security. The phone pairs just fine with my username and password. I get wifi. But left unattended for like 2 hours, or if you plug in power to the phone it will sit I this limbo mode. I.have to turn off wifi the turn.it back.on.
Now aat home I have a basic netgear router with wpa 2 encryption. I have connected using a password. And WPS pushbutton.connect method. This.problem stillllll exisits!!! The phones wifi icon is blue and I have no connection. Sometimes....SOMETIMES it says disconnected under the settings.
I have 2 friends with this phone, totally stock, and they have the issues.
My phone is 2.3.6 stock. With preserved root. When I did the OTA. Back.when I was on 2.3.5.
I have googled "Motorola 2.3.6 wifi issues" and there is alot of flack regarding this.
I'm looking for.some help.....with a 200mb bullsh!t plan from att. I rely on my wifi aloootttt.
I can provide any kind of information about my phone to fix this or at least find this problems cause.

Wifi issues are common with this phone. I even fried my brain for hours to find out the root cause but no luck.
Only thing you can do to be always connected is configure ip settings manually go to settings/wireless and network/Wifi settings/ then hit the below capacitive menu button and hit advanced and under Ip settings click on "Use static Ip"and configure the below four things Ip, gateway, netmask, Dns.
Can you please try the following:
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wifi Settings
Press the menu button and choose Advanced
Change the Wifi sleep policy to "Never" ... but YMMV.
My phones has always been under the never sleep policy. And sometimes it still shuts wifi off. Like the icon will be gone.
Ill also setup the static IP manually.
I'm no phone noob. I get paid to maintain a campus of computers, basically the networking / it guy/ programmer/ circuit analysis. I work for two departments. Annnyway this is why it bugs me so much. Is it a hardware issue?
I have had the HD2 and never had this issue and I'm a flash-a-holic. I donno. I'm just grasping for a fix this is soooooo annoying.

My school uses an 802.1x profile. With wi-fi sleep policy set to never, and groove-IP set to keep the wi-fi awake, I don't have issues.
Usually.
Sometimes the connection will time-out but will stay on wi-fi so I have to toggle it.
I also use wi-fi analyzer to sort of manage/connect to networks and it seems to speed up how fast the phone connects by a considerable amount.
I remember awhile back someone else had wifi problems and I offered this suggestion to try and fix it. It's not a guarantee, but it's worth a shot if nothing else has worked. Hopefully it does the trick.

i as well am having problems. anytime my screen times out it cuts wifi, and i usually have to toggle it to get it to work again. its especially annoying when downloading a large file off a slow file sharing website. i usually just plug it in and set the display to never timeout till the download completes
I read about this in Defy forum, it's related to android 2.3.6 not Motorola, I recall that you have to set lease time to 2 hours or 2 days..

you know whats funny? i had a hd2 but i had wifi dc all the time on every rom except very few sense roms
working percfectly on a2 ics though

I assume it's a silly question, so if you feel in the right mood, just flame me Whenever I walk around I meet a lot of open Wi-FI networks, since one italian ISP is now giving out everyone routers which belongs to FON network. My S7 automatically connect to those wifi, but they need you to register to a website to use them, so either I turn wifi off, Or i must wait to be out of range before I can once again use my 3G/LET connection. Is there a way to avoid S7 to connect to open networks and just to known Wi-Fi?

Turn it off when you are not using it, this also helps to save battery.

just as a theory check your apps and see if any of them has permissions like , network access , connect to wifi and that kind of things....
Thanks both. I know I can turn wifi off and can even use app like juice to turn on/off with GPS, but I can't believe that there is no more an option to prevent auto-connect to unknown networks. Besides being annoying, it's also a security issue

Samsung Italy just replied me, they are experiencing the same annoying situation, and they say it's android 6 that has removed this option. Suggestion is: turn off wifi. Sadly I have to admit that in this situation , iPhone wins. I just will turn wifi off, but in year 2016 being forced to always manually do something looks a bit silly.

I have it learn my home cell towers and turn wifi on/off when I enter/leave the area. On AT&T phones there is a setting to auto connect to their Hotspots which I have set to off.
