Horizontal lines - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone get lines on their screen it seems to really show up on light and grey colors. Its weird because it doesn't look like it goes from edge to edge its just where there is bright colors.
I attached a picture, my display just goes nuts whenever I have it up because of all the grey. I can see the horizontal lines at around 15% screen brightness and up.

Perfectly normal on a LCD Display...have it on my Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 5 and noticed it on other devices like the LG G2...not noticeable unless you´re VERY close to the screen...nothing too bad

I can't believe this is normal, this effect doesn't show up on my computer LCD, and when I have that picture up you can see lines from far away on my phone.

Okay...I see you´re coming from the Galaxy Nexus, just like me...muuuuch better screen imo despite the lower pixel density..
But very noticeable Scanlines might indicate a GPU or Screen defect...small lines, barely noticeable may be just the digitizer you´re seeing...Again: Only speculations
I noticed these lines on my N5, but they´re too small to capture on a camera let alone see from a distance...
You might want to RMA or try other Nexus devices out..

I am looking at the image on a 60" 1080p display and I can't see any horizontal lines. I must be blind?

when?
sorry when does it happen to u?

Same problem for me.
Horizontal lines.
Barely visible on white or black screens.
Noticeable on grey tones.

Ummm...... That is a SCREENSHOT it will not show defects in the display, only what the software is "outputting" to the display, screenshots will be defect free.

I'm having the same issue with my N5. Have you found out if this is normal or a hardware defect?
Thanks!

Screen discoloration?

Anyone notice a slight screen discoloration, almost a purple-ish or some other dark-ish tint? Most noticeable when compared side-by-side with another device...?
Pictures maybe?

AMOLED screens does look a bit different compared to LCDs
do you mean a superficial discoloration or a change in the colors of the Amoled screen?
It's like a purple-ish tint over the entire screen- it's difficult to notice until you compare the phone side-by-side with another device. I know SAMOLED screen look very different but the colors should be more vivid, not discolored. Best test is to go into the clock app, hit the dim button in the upper right-hand screen and see if the bottom dock row of buttons turns super purple. If anyone tests this, would be great to hear your results...
Yeah I've noticed this as well, I did the test that you just mentioned with the clock and the bottom bar does turn purple for me as well.
People who have looked at my phone have said there seems to be a tint to it.

I've heard mixed feedback with some saying their's does NOT respond with the purple-ish tint and that if it does, its defective; others have said this is just how SAMOLED screens are (doesn't sound right). I'm going back to Best Buy today to try and exchange and compare. Will let you know my results.

[POLL]Screen Issues One X

I am creating this poll to see what screen problems people have with the one x.
Options are:
Color banding
Dead Pixels
Dust Under Screen
Light Bleed
Yellow Tinge
Multiple issues
Also Please Say what color One X you have
I have color banding and Light Bleed on a White one x.
too bright in general lol
Gray ATT version. I have banding and one very small dust spec just on the edge of the screen on the bottom right corner.

Oh god, dust and dead pixels are my ocd's worst nightmares. I get so depressed when I see them Color Banding will soon be joining them too
You should add a no issue selection.
how?
Wheres the "no problems" option?
Mine has very minor light bleed, but thats it. Its only noticeable if I'm looking at a pitch black screen in a dark room.. so its pretty much no problem
Only issue I'm having is that the screen is too bright for the auto brightness.
Other than that it's perfect
No issues. But there's no option for that in the poll.
Gradient banding and light bleed (bottom right corner).
I have a yellow screen. But for me, I am getting intermittent screen flickering, specifically in Chrome and Messages.
Furthermore, I already have tons of micro scratches on my screen. Have no idea how they got there. Glad I picked up a screen protector for $3 on amazon and Ordered a Seidio Active Case also. Don;t want this beautiful screen to get a jacked up.
No issues here either.
No problem at all here! Gray one X.

You could try Juice defender. It has an option to change the auto brightness, both the maximum light, and the average light (and minimum)
Only thing I miss there is an option to disable it while charging or in the car.
My only issue is banding. For those who DON'T have banding, I would appreciate if you'd check out my thread on the issue, especially if you're able to post a photo of your phone's screen.

I don't think so. Take a screenshot when you see banding, then look at the screenshot on your computer or on another phone. When I tried that, I saw less banding on the computer and on my old Captivate than on my One X, viewing the exact same image.
I have banding, but it seems more like a software bit-depth issue than a physical problem with the screen.

Guys, I wish it were this simple, but it doesn't appear to be. I can use Paint.NET to make a gradient, and view that same image file on many screens, and my One X shows more banding than the others. It still doesn't look as bad as the One X's app-uninstall screen, which is likely because my gradient is linear and theirs isn't, and so on top of there being bands, they're also unevenly spaced! But there's no denying that the bands are there (at least on mine), and they're more apparent than on the other displays I have access to (another phone, a laptop, and a TV).

I meant a driver-level firmware issue. When I had the Nook Color, there was a kernel that enabled lower bit-depth to speed up the boot, but it introduced banding like this. There was another kernel that could show full 24-bit color and had no banding.
So just loading an image onto the phone isn't proving that is a hardware issue. This just makes my argument stronger with the uneven banding being related to bit-depth and not hardware.
I have no screen issues! @TinyBoss I saw your other post and I have to say your banding does look bad. I was leaning toward software until I compared mine to yours and I'm thinking you have a bad display...

Screen: white bands between pixels?

I bought an used photon Q from USA, perfect state but I want to know if the screen is ok or damaged:
using the brightness at high or maximum value I notice a strange effect.. I see light color lines between every 2 line on the screen.
I easily notice this effect on gray pages, for example in settings.
For example If I have an uniform gray image on the screen, I will see between every 2 gray lines a little white line..
Using "screen tester" from market I can easily notice that it happen only with gray, other colors seems okay, but I slightly notice also in more complex images with complex colors..
Is this a problem of my device or is a "problem" of all photon Q screens?
No one can help me? :crying:
I would like to know if other photon Q have this problem!
It seems like the problem is present in all color combination, not in pure color like pure white, pure black, and pure red, green or blue.
When I mix 2 of that colors I get something like:
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
or
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
It seems like the screen can't make all 16million colors, and to get the correct color use different colors in the neighboring lines.
This problem is more visible with high brightness and looking at the screen closely.
(I try to use a magnifying glass and the problem is obvious).
Someone can check his photon Q screen?
You can go to android settings and see if the black -> gray background have this strange effect...
I need to understand if is a problem of all Photon Q or if is mine defective.. I have to decide whether to return the phone in the U.S. or if I get refunded the cost of the screen and try to change it by myself
Here is a photo of the issue: http://imageshack.us/a/img547/5474/uhkg.jpg
You can see that the "gray" background of the brightness settings is not uniform, you can see dark gray lines and light gray lines.
You can see this also without magnifying glass and with your own eye..
In some photos seems to see a grid.
it is as if the subpixel grid is not aligned or something similar.. :silly:
I only need to know if you have the same "issue" with the screen or I have a defective LCD, so I can decide what to do! Please someone can check his photon Q screen and answer?
Thanks! :good:
have you anything changed on the display settings (desnsity or something with the colors ?)
its hard to say, it could be a display issue but i dont know really here. mhm
Until I read this thread, I didn't notice anything wrong with my display, and now I see the lighter-colored lines too. I don't think it's anything that will be fixed by exchanging the handset, but it's also not that big of a problem for me, either (I have to bring my Q really close to my face to see the banding). I wonder if the issue is more noticeable on that particular handset, or if you have really good eyesight (or maybe a little of both)?

I was kind of thinking the same... perhaps the OP is expecting perfection even down to the individual pixels... and that is just not going to happen.
Remove the magnifying glass from the screen, should work fine
Ahahah thanks for reply!
but I can see the lines also without magnifier!
I used magnifier only to make a decent picture

If you look at it from a distance, I doubt they are very noticeable.
Honestly, if you're really picky about screens - why did you get a Photon Q? The screen on this phone is not the greatest, I think everyone knew that when purchasing it - they were not buying it because it had the best screen.

I didn't bought this phone for the screen, but I was expecting a decent quality for a 2012 phone.
This not seems a normal problem, some lines of pixels seems damaged or something similar.
The problem is visible also at 20-30cm distance from the screen, the colors are not uniform, the images aren't sharp and in some cases I can see these lines.
At 50cm of distance I can't see these lines, I do not want to look at my phone from half a meter away.
The bad lines colors that I see are rendered by the pixels, is not a problem of matrix or distance of pixel or similar.
I simply want to know if you can see these horizontal lines on the screen, for example in the facebook logo, at 10 - 20 cm of distance.
Perhaps there was a stock of defective screens.
If my screen is defective I'll replace it in the future, if the problem is the bad quality of photon Q screen I'll stay in peace.
I don't understand how it's possible that the screen draws these lines, it seems stupid! The phone can control every single pixel, why draw these lines? I have never seen similar issue in a screen, even in the worst

Well, my Q is dead so I can't really tell you. What I can tell you, is the screen is not the best. It's just "OK" in my opinion.
This is my first native Android device, so I don't have a ton to compare to... but reading about screen tech, this device is not on the bleeding edge by any means.

Yeah, they say that the screen is not good because of the "low" resolution compared to the full HD and HD ready display (galaxy S3, S4, htc ONE, ecc..) but they say that the quality is good for an LCD, images are sharp ecc.. ecc...
I found this image on google: http://cdn.gottabemobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Motorola-Photon-Q-4G-LTE-Review-display.jpg
Here you can see the single pixel but these lines are not present. Now I try to take a similar picture (I don't have the original rom but the issue was present also with original rom, also with recovery etc.. so is not a software problem).
From 20 to 30 cm away, I don't see any banding on my screen, so it's possible that you do have a bad LCD, or at least a less than perfect one. However, from what I've seen of the problem from the pictures you've shared, if I had the same issue I would probably just put up with it, especially if the phone is great otherwise. On the other hand, what bothers me and what bothers you are likely to not be the same. So use your best judgement on whether the lines are bad enough to justify replacing the "faulty" device.

I have noticed exactly the sam effect on my Moto G. You need very sharp eyes to see this but with hight brightness it is there. Pure colors are not effected. Gray and light blue colours are mostly effected. I presume this is normal to mix different colours.

Uneven backlight/ colour tone shifting on bottom half of the screen

Just purchased a brand new Galaxy S6 32GB FLAT in white today. Right out of the box, especially on a white background, I noticed that the bottom half of the screen shifts into a more warmer tone. It's most visible on a white background, where i can actually see the transition between the two colour tones. Other colours are affected too, but not as noticeable. Please refer to the attached screenshots, (Ignore the diagonal lines running across the screen, caused by the camera artefact).
My question is, is it normal? Can you please check yours and provide feedback? Thanks in advance
I have the same
Its a common issue. But it shouldnt be like that. You should get a replacement

Dude this isnt severe. Ive seen enough amoled displays having worse tints and stripes. Yours is much better than them. If I was you, I wouldnt settle for this. Replace it or get a refund. I have severe ocd about my phone. I need it to be perfect. Luckily the S6 that I have has a very good display. A perfect one. Get a replacement asap. This isnt something normal.
Im ordering my 2nd replacemeny soon. My first one was yellowish and uneven like yours. My current one has a horrible pink tint. Try 3

I took my phone back to the Samsung store and got it replaced by the manager there. The screen looked fine when i first looked at it in store, but soon after taking it home i realised that this second unit has a yellowish tint on the right side of the screen. Going back tomorrow for another replacement.... SIGH!!!!!
My third replacement from the Samsung Exp Store is.... a KEEPER! This unit has a much better even backlight and meets my expectation! After going through that trouble, i'm happy to say that I'm a a happy camper

Looks all right to me, but then again we all perceive things differently. My current unit is not perfect, there's still a green/blue tint to it, but it's tolerable. If you cannot tolerate it, then keep exchanging until you find one that you can tolerate with. Keep in mind though that you won't find a unit with 100% even colour hue; it's the limitation with AMOLED displays. All the best!
I have the same issue
I have the same, but much less severe than yours seem to be. I don't notice it at all with normal use, only super slightly on bright white screens. If it really looks like it does on the photo, I would get it replaced.

Light bars on black wallpaper
I have the following issue on black wallpapers. On top and bottom there is a lighter bar. This appears only after applying the wallpaper.Viewing them with Quickpick there are no bars.Same in Nova and TW after applying it.Tried attaching a screen but the bars are not captured. What could it be,a ROM issue,a low DPI?I have the DPI set to low. Also on brighter pics you can't see the bars ,after applying which makes sense.
White uniformity - Is this the jelly effect and is it normal?
I got a really good deal on a used Tab S6 from Amazon and I love the tablet but there is weird tinting thing happening on white screens.
When viewed slightly off-axis the tint goes blue.
Makes me nuts when reading NY TImes and edges of white screen are tinted blue.
The effect changes when viewed at different angles and seen without screen protector. It is tough to photograph but hopefully you can see what I see.
Ignore the moire in the middle of the first shot - that's a screen protector... Look at extreme edges of screen.
Thanks and pardon me if this has been answered before - I've searched and couldn't find this issue.

vertical lines on display in sleep mode

Hello guys,
I just got my moto g 3 this week... I noticed vertical line on the mobile display today when back light is off or phone is in sleep mode..These lines are not visible when light is on... Moreover they are viable at a particular angle only or under direct light focussed on it.
The display and touch seems to be fine until now and no issues with performance.. But I am little worried about this fault of vertical lines. Does this mean a faulty display and should I get my phone replaced.. Please suggest if anyone else faced the same issue..
Thanks
Even I have these lines. Don't think anything is faulty or anything though.
Sent from my MotoG3 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeap, same thing here with a XT1543. But I only see them if I really look for it hehehe, it is not THAT noticeable IMHO... Relax, dude!
Today I noticed that I can see these vertical lines in daylight even while the backlight is on.
Has anyone faced this until now. If not can u guys please try and advise here..
Just for reference, I can see "vertical lines" on my LG G2 display under sunlight with the display on or off. It's more prominent when it's off though. I wouldn't worry about it, I think it has something to do with the digitizer (capacitive touch layer) underneath the glass.
Yes in direct sunlight i can see lines, dots, and even evenly spaced tiny threads reflecting in bright sunlight when the screen is off, and tiny vertical threads while using camera outdoors in bright sunlight. Never had a display like this before. Either something new and amazing technology or cheaporola uses cheap displays. Googled it. At least mine has no dead/hot/stock pixels.
Can see the lines when screen is pointed towards a light source
Got the same lines on my Moto G 2014, it's somewhat related to Gorilla Glass.
dont have any on xt1540 ,my xperia z2 had so i can easy notice it.
I have the same kind of thing on my moto g 4g, it's perfect normal and is due to the screen layers. :good:
i too notice those lines .. but only once i was able to see it , now i am unable to see ..
i think its related to temperature

Yes i observed it as well from day one. It is visible in sleep mode only looking from certain angles. Weird but not really an issue.
