Screen discoloration? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone notice a slight screen discoloration, almost a purple-ish or some other dark-ish tint? Most noticeable when compared side-by-side with another device...?

Pictures maybe?

AMOLED screens does look a bit different compared to LCDs

do you mean a superficial discoloration or a change in the colors of the Amoled screen?

It's like a purple-ish tint over the entire screen- it's difficult to notice until you compare the phone side-by-side with another device. I know SAMOLED screen look very different but the colors should be more vivid, not discolored. Best test is to go into the clock app, hit the dim button in the upper right-hand screen and see if the bottom dock row of buttons turns super purple. If anyone tests this, would be great to hear your results...

Yeah I've noticed this as well, I did the test that you just mentioned with the clock and the bottom bar does turn purple for me as well.
People who have looked at my phone have said there seems to be a tint to it.

I've heard mixed feedback with some saying their's does NOT respond with the purple-ish tint and that if it does, its defective; others have said this is just how SAMOLED screens are (doesn't sound right). I'm going back to Best Buy today to try and exchange and compare. Will let you know my results.

[Q] LCD Bleed on Black Notification Bar

I know many of us have been ignoring the slight LCD bleed on the top corners of our G2x. We are now not able feel it due to the white notification bar. We have to view it only in a black background.
I have rooted the phone but did not install the Eagle rom yet.
Anyone who installed this rom, Did you feel that the LCD bleed is too much visible on black notification bar?
I had it flashed on mine and could not notice it at all

One more reason to love this phone...
I was nervous about that so when I saw eagle had the black bar I tried it and was releaved to not notice the bleed. So far I only notice it on startup when its dark. Someone who has worse bleed may notice it .
When I noticed the backlight bleed one of the first things I did was think OMG gingerbread!!! I didnt want that bleed showing up on the black notification bar. I downloaded these pics to test exactly what it would look like on gingerbread and was horrified to see that the bleed was completely noticable, especially in the app drawer. Thats when I exchanged my phone for one that had less backlight bleed. Still has some but only about half as bad.

I am planning to install it and verify it. My worry was if I notice too much bleed and have to return it, will nandroid restore do the magic to get the phone back to original stock version.
My bleed is only minimal in the top right corner by the time/clock. I dont see it with eagle rom. But...is it my bleed or is the status bar 2 different shades of black? With the top half being lighter. I didnt have bleed across the entire top so im assuming the status bar is two toned. Anyone notice this?
@jrharvey - Thanks for the GB pics.
I didn't notice the bleed in the home page pic but in the app drawer top left corner show the bleed in day light. It would be significant in the night .
I am worried, if I return it I might get a phone which is worst than this . I don't have all the reboot issues. btw, this is my second phone.
Didn't notice the bleeding with the black bar.
Great idea to test with a screenshot. I just checked mine and sure enough I can see it in the upper left corner when brightness is 50% or higher, just sitting in my office. I don't notice it in the right corner because of the clock. In reality I always have an icon showing in the upper left corner as well so I wonder if I would actually notice it or not on my phone.

I was curious about the two tone status bar! I can't tell, but the status bar ain't solid black! So I guess we still can't figure it out until a solid black notification!

I downloaded the pics, went to a dark area, and turned brightness to max.
I don't notice any bleed.

thanks for checking. i'm color blind, but still saw a difference in the 2 tone status bar. had me thinking more bleeding was starting\getting worse.
I'm on my second phone and was pretty satisfied. The bleeding is less compared to the first and doesn't really bother me at all since 95% of my time with the phone won't have an all black background.
But with the notification bar being black on Gingerbread, that's another issue. I downloaded the pics and on the app drawer pic, it's definately noticeable in the top left corner as there was no icon there.
With the white notification bar I can handle the bleed because I won't notice it much, but with the bar being black I don't think I'll be able to handle looking at that bleed every frickin time I use the phone.
I wasn't going to do a second exchange, but will have to now and if things don't improve I'll just refund it completely and wait for a SAMOLED+ phone. If the USA version of the SGS2 has SAMOLED+ instead of SC LCD (at this point it looks to be SAMOLED+ as the FCC papers indicate it is the GT-I9100 model) then I might go for that.
the G2x has an IPS screen. which is actually quite nice (if it doesn't bleed) its worse on battery but looks better at different angles as opposed to SAMOLED
My phone locked up with only a black screen, i thought the battery died but it was frozen had to remove battery to get it going again. When it was totally black I noticed bleeding and also backlight leaking or whatever term. I know my iPhone 4 QA is a lot better.

I agree the G2x's IPS screen is impressive and with the exception of black does seem to look on par or even better than Samsung's SAMOLED screen.
Guess LG just ran into a manufacturing issue with the latest batch as the Ipad 2's screen is also having bleeding issues.
What I'm more concern with is LG's warranty policy. I have been corresponding with their customer care department via emails and the two emails I received back doesn't sit too well with me.
My third G2x is coming in next week and hopefully the third time's the charm.

Thanks for the links...great idea. I loaded 'em up in a dark room at 100% brightness and only noticed very minimal bleed. As a comparison I did the same with my old HD2 and bleed was roughly the same. Looks like I got lucky (knocking on wood). Thanks again.

[POLL]Screen Issues One X

I am creating this poll to see what screen problems people have with the one x.
Options are:
Color banding
Dead Pixels
Dust Under Screen
Light Bleed
Yellow Tinge
Multiple issues
Also Please Say what color One X you have
I have color banding and Light Bleed on a White one x.
too bright in general lol
Gray ATT version. I have banding and one very small dust spec just on the edge of the screen on the bottom right corner.

Oh god, dust and dead pixels are my ocd's worst nightmares. I get so depressed when I see them Color Banding will soon be joining them too
You should add a no issue selection.
how?
Wheres the "no problems" option?
Mine has very minor light bleed, but thats it. Its only noticeable if I'm looking at a pitch black screen in a dark room.. so its pretty much no problem
Only issue I'm having is that the screen is too bright for the auto brightness.
Other than that it's perfect
No issues. But there's no option for that in the poll.
Gradient banding and light bleed (bottom right corner).
I have a yellow screen. But for me, I am getting intermittent screen flickering, specifically in Chrome and Messages.
Furthermore, I already have tons of micro scratches on my screen. Have no idea how they got there. Glad I picked up a screen protector for $3 on amazon and Ordered a Seidio Active Case also. Don;t want this beautiful screen to get a jacked up.
No issues here either.
No problem at all here! Gray one X.

You could try Juice defender. It has an option to change the auto brightness, both the maximum light, and the average light (and minimum)
Only thing I miss there is an option to disable it while charging or in the car.
My only issue is banding. For those who DON'T have banding, I would appreciate if you'd check out my thread on the issue, especially if you're able to post a photo of your phone's screen.

no issues for me either .
banding sometimes but minor , and isnt that software related anyways?

I don't think so. Take a screenshot when you see banding, then look at the screenshot on your computer or on another phone. When I tried that, I saw less banding on the computer and on my old Captivate than on my One X, viewing the exact same image.
I have banding, but it seems more like a software bit-depth issue than a physical problem with the screen.

Guys, I wish it were this simple, but it doesn't appear to be. I can use Paint.NET to make a gradient, and view that same image file on many screens, and my One X shows more banding than the others. It still doesn't look as bad as the One X's app-uninstall screen, which is likely because my gradient is linear and theirs isn't, and so on top of there being bands, they're also unevenly spaced! But there's no denying that the bands are there (at least on mine), and they're more apparent than on the other displays I have access to (another phone, a laptop, and a TV).

I meant a driver-level firmware issue. When I had the Nook Color, there was a kernel that enabled lower bit-depth to speed up the boot, but it introduced banding like this. There was another kernel that could show full 24-bit color and had no banding.
So just loading an image onto the phone isn't proving that is a hardware issue. This just makes my argument stronger with the uneven banding being related to bit-depth and not hardware.
I have no screen issues! @TinyBoss I saw your other post and I have to say your banding does look bad. I was leaning toward software until I compared mine to yours and I'm thinking you have a bad display...

Horizontal lines

Does anyone get lines on their screen it seems to really show up on light and grey colors. Its weird because it doesn't look like it goes from edge to edge its just where there is bright colors.
I attached a picture, my display just goes nuts whenever I have it up because of all the grey. I can see the horizontal lines at around 15% screen brightness and up.
Perfectly normal on a LCD Display...have it on my Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 5 and noticed it on other devices like the LG G2...not noticeable unless you´re VERY close to the screen...nothing too bad

I can't believe this is normal, this effect doesn't show up on my computer LCD, and when I have that picture up you can see lines from far away on my phone.
Okay...I see you´re coming from the Galaxy Nexus, just like me...muuuuch better screen imo despite the lower pixel density..
But very noticeable Scanlines might indicate a GPU or Screen defect...small lines, barely noticeable may be just the digitizer you´re seeing...Again: Only speculations
I noticed these lines on my N5, but they´re too small to capture on a camera let alone see from a distance...
You might want to RMA or try other Nexus devices out..
I am looking at the image on a 60" 1080p display and I can't see any horizontal lines. I must be blind?
when?
sorry when does it happen to u?
Same problem for me.
Horizontal lines.
Barely visible on white or black screens.
Noticeable on grey tones.

Ummm...... That is a SCREENSHOT it will not show defects in the display, only what the software is "outputting" to the display, screenshots will be defect free.

Uneven backlight/ colour tone shifting on bottom half of the screen

Just purchased a brand new Galaxy S6 32GB FLAT in white today. Right out of the box, especially on a white background, I noticed that the bottom half of the screen shifts into a more warmer tone. It's most visible on a white background, where i can actually see the transition between the two colour tones. Other colours are affected too, but not as noticeable. Please refer to the attached screenshots, (Ignore the diagonal lines running across the screen, caused by the camera artefact).
My question is, is it normal? Can you please check yours and provide feedback? Thanks in advance
I have the same
Its a common issue. But it shouldnt be like that. You should get a replacement

Dude this isnt severe. Ive seen enough amoled displays having worse tints and stripes. Yours is much better than them. If I was you, I wouldnt settle for this. Replace it or get a refund. I have severe ocd about my phone. I need it to be perfect. Luckily the S6 that I have has a very good display. A perfect one. Get a replacement asap. This isnt something normal.
Im ordering my 2nd replacemeny soon. My first one was yellowish and uneven like yours. My current one has a horrible pink tint. Try 3
Welcome to the club: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/getting-replacement-s6-due-to-screen-t3074865
I took my phone back to the Samsung store and got it replaced by the manager there. The screen looked fine when i first looked at it in store, but soon after taking it home i realised that this second unit has a yellowish tint on the right side of the screen. Going back tomorrow for another replacement.... SIGH!!!!!
My third replacement from the Samsung Exp Store is.... a KEEPER! This unit has a much better even backlight and meets my expectation! After going through that trouble, i'm happy to say that I'm a a happy camper

Looks all right to me, but then again we all perceive things differently. My current unit is not perfect, there's still a green/blue tint to it, but it's tolerable. If you cannot tolerate it, then keep exchanging until you find one that you can tolerate with. Keep in mind though that you won't find a unit with 100% even colour hue; it's the limitation with AMOLED displays. All the best!
I have the same issue
I have the same, but much less severe than yours seem to be. I don't notice it at all with normal use, only super slightly on bright white screens. If it really looks like it does on the photo, I would get it replaced.

Light bars on black wallpaper
I have the following issue on black wallpapers. On top and bottom there is a lighter bar. This appears only after applying the wallpaper.Viewing them with Quickpick there are no bars.Same in Nova and TW after applying it.Tried attaching a screen but the bars are not captured. What could it be,a ROM issue,a low DPI?I have the DPI set to low. Also on brighter pics you can't see the bars ,after applying which makes sense.
White uniformity - Is this the jelly effect and is it normal?
I got a really good deal on a used Tab S6 from Amazon and I love the tablet but there is weird tinting thing happening on white screens.
When viewed slightly off-axis the tint goes blue.
Makes me nuts when reading NY TImes and edges of white screen are tinted blue.
The effect changes when viewed at different angles and seen without screen protector. It is tough to photograph but hopefully you can see what I see.
Ignore the moire in the middle of the first shot - that's a screen protector... Look at extreme edges of screen.
Thanks and pardon me if this has been answered before - I've searched and couldn't find this issue.

How many of you actually have a display tint issue?

My display is green-tinted quite a bit, I didn't notice the exact problem at first because my display wasn't too warm or too cool, it just looked odd. I only realized it as I went to tweak the display options, reducing the green slider by about 80% brings my display to the correct tint, where the whites are the same as real life whites. Red and blue are correct in my display, those don't need any tint correction
My tint is really a non-issue because it can be fixed completely with the sliders, but it seems like a lot of people are having problems with their displays on the S8, compared to the S7. Have any of you had these similar issues, even small ones like mine?
'Real life whites', yeah but based on what? Most 'white' things arent white, they are blue tinted. Real white is quite creamy and slightly green to some eyes. Do you have any pictures?
My orchid had it bad. Took back for exchange and took three tries to get one without it. Bought at BestBuy, red tint that is.
I didn't notice anything yet that is close to "That's odd!".
Sent from my SM-G955F using XDA Labs
There has already been a poll here on this, it came back at about 20% had red tint.
Delete
I didn't even notice the tint until it was being reported. I lined up all my phones and just opened up a white page and u could definitely see more reddish hue on the S8+. I simply used the slider to adjust. Problem that I didn't know I had - gone.
slightly redish on top and right side. rest is fine. I'm not sure if I wanna turn it back in. AT&T said if I returned it it was a restocking fee. but can I just go to them and exchange?
Mine have the red screen tint even after the update, and if I try that fix and put it on cold and reduce the red, I see some rainbow effect on the edges, more proeminent on the left side and top, and it still have some reddish tint on low left corner, and that completely messes with my eyes...
I've had an S7 Edge and never experienced any of this problems, I was with it yesterday and it was amazing compared to this S8+. It's a shame that samsung have such a poor screens on this flagship.
