[Q] camera shows black screen then stops working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

yeah so today i got my spigen ultra hybrid case and decided to test the camera flash as some people said the pictures came out washed but my camera shows a black screen then if i try to take a picture it crashes. i rebooted then it went away once and the black screen came back. i then cleared the camera cache still nothing anyone know how to fix it?
thanks

Other than reboot I don't know. I have the same thing though. I also use face unlock and more often than not the front camera won't load either. My guess is an OTA will have a fix. If you find something do post and like wise I'll do the same

Can you fix a dead camera pixel?

I seem to have a dead pixel in my camera which not only shows up in the camera's viewfinder, but also is present in the actual pictures once they're taken and saved. The screen itself is fine and after doing some reading online I've found that some digital cameras have an option to "clean" the camera sensor but I cannot seem to be able to find an app that will do that. Does anyone know of a fix for something like this?

The only dead pixel apps in the market seem to be for finding those in the screen itself, nothing for the camera.

Kvswim- never happened before. The last picture I had taken and saved in my gallery was on 11/17 and there was no dead pixel then. But every time I open the camera, Goggles, or any camera app at all the dead pixel is in the same spot. It's tiny but you can zoom in on it on any picture that I take.

How would I do that? There is nothing on the very outside plastic covering. Either there is something on the sensor itself or it contains dead pixels.

Yeah. Stuck pixel fixers work on the principle that a pixel isn't actually dead, but simply stuck. some actually die and you can't fix them. (we're talking about screens, not sensors). When a pixel gets stuck on a screen, you can keep trying to tell the pixel to shift thousands of times per minute and sometimes it will unstick it, like trying to open a rusty door.
Now on the pixel side, there isn't really a way to force it to start capturing light again and filtering the way it should. I know that the Canon Hack software/firmware for canon cameras have dead-pixel-finders so that you can compensate for the dead pixels, (via filtering in software) and you might be able to find something similar for Android, but it seems doubtful to find this for the phones.
sorry dude. Like they said, you might try cleaning the lens intricately. It could be something that is stuck right there in front.
I have the exact same problem. Three black smudges that are there and show up in every camera app, the viewfinder and even after the pictures are saved. It wasn't happening up until before a month or two ago. The smudges are almost translucent because i can almost see a bit of light coming through them so they might not be the lens. Never seen this happen before on any camera. I even tried cleaning it off very well but that doesn't fix it. Any suggestions?
Just called VZW Tech Support this afternoon... they're overnight shipping me a new Charge which should be here tomorrow afternoon.
same problem
I am also having the same problem.
The pixels are dead and showing a black thick line which destroys the pics.
First I thought that it may be dirt so I cleaned the camera but nothing happened I then realised that the line is not changing with focus or else its intensity should change with focus also when I zoom the pic its size also increases and looks very odd.
By viewing it, it is clear that its not dirt but the pixels are dead.
Pls help me I am a photographer and I only have my android phone as my camera..
It will destroy my photos.
i also have problem with my phone, im not sure if it's a dead pixel.
it only shows when im using the camera i can see red dot when i take picture in black or any dark background. it really annoys me. please i need help . can i still fix it?
I had that problem with my motoe6plus. Ir seems that the default software for the camera doesnt force the potencial of the camera itself.(thats what i think) so it fixed with the 'open camera' app. IT waS verry irritating for me so i hope youll fondo a solution

My N5 camera now has a dark spot

So I jsut updated my google camera app yesterday and was eager to try any new features and test the camera, when all of a sudden I noticed that there is a dark blemish right in the middle of the screen. I am 100% sure it wasnt there when i bought it, as I did tested it extensively. At first I thought that it was actually a screen defect or that there is a smudge on the lenses.
It appears on every photo, HDR or not. It is best visible on light background. You can check the attached test photo i did.
I am not a huge photography fan, but it does bother me alot knowing that my brand new 2 months old nexus defected. Its rooted ofcourse, so there is no guarantee.
I read somewhere that this is caused by a dust particle inside the camera lenses.
So I just wanted to know whether someone else is suffering from that exact same issue. And if there is an easy way to cope with that problem, e.g. disassembling the lense or forcing air into it :silly:
So, yes, any opinions would be welcome.
Thanks guys
p.s. Also, if anyone else had experienced it, Im curious what case (if any) had they been using? lol I actually noticed the problem after removing and inserting my N5 back into my spigen neo hybrid a couple of times, which is actually quite a challenge. So Im wondering whether that hasnt something to do with it
I wouldn't advise you to open the device up yourself.. You will surely loose warranty if you mess up.
If you think it's a hardware issue then Flash the factory images from Google to return to stock
, reset the tamper flag, lock the bootloader and send it in..

Yep, I can confirm the same experience as you! Only appeared yesterday! I have the Rev11 Hardware.
A bit of googling did reveal others with the same issue...
I have tried a can of compressed air, tapping phone...No joy, it's still there...
I have also tried different camera apps to confirm. Interestingly it was post updating the google camera app too. (but i do not believe this too be the root cause, I've had many specs of dust in my DSLRs before and to appears to me to be dust on the rear of the lens or on the sensor!) I would expect these to be sealed on our phones!
RMA, warranty...are looming...any other ideas peeps?
Cheers

I tried the tapping trick too - did not work for me either
I'm still contemplating over the idea of reverting to stock, locking the bootloader and sending in my faulty unit. It would probably take a couple of weeks and I don't want to part ways with my N5 for so long. But living with that nasty blemish on my camera is equally frustrating
I'm going to try this.

I had this issue a few months back; the image you posted looks identical to the issue I had.
Google covered it under warranty and sent me a new device. They asked me to do a full factory reset to confirm it wasn't software related. The process was pretty smooth: if they do send you a new device, you just send your N5 back once it comes so you're not stuck without a phone for a while or anything. They do put a hold on your credit card for the price of the phone until they get your phone, though.
I had it rooted and everything prior to sending it in, but I unrooted/reset the tamper flag before sending it in (and did a factory reset obviously).
I have the same problem but with Nexus 5x. Not 100% sure was the dark spot in the middle at the beginning or not. Now the device is about a week old.

Camera stuck in Macro mode!!!!

I have tried to switch between macro and auto but it won't focus in auto. I have factory reset it and it still won't auto focus. It's one week old. Anyone else have this issue. Any fix for this? I guess as a last resort I would have to return it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm having the same issue but mine pass 14 days return period
How do you "know" it is in macro mode? I notice on the Gear 2 there is no symbol on the screen to indicate it is in macro mode. You still get a square in the middle of the screen that turns green when its focused okay. Is it just that you find you can only take pictures that are close to the camera?
In fact on mine, if I set to Macro, I can still take a shot of something far away and it still focuses! The only difference I find is that in macro mode instead of Auto, that very close objects are a little bit sharper.
It is focused only very close to the camera lens. I'm talking like inches away but as soon as you are a foot or more away it is blurry. I guess it's going back. I found some posts about this on the gear 1. Seems like it carried over to the 2 as well.

Found a Fix
Had the same thing happen to my gear 2!
Camera did not focus and pictures came out looking really blurry.
restarted, restored and even cleaned the lens but nothing. No matter what I did the camera would still look very blurry.
So I decided to pop it open and take a look at the guts. Everything looked OK but i disconnected and reconnected the camera flex cable anyways to reset the camera. Put the Gear back together, powered it back on and Bam! works like new again. instantly focuses when opening the camera.

Wow. Well good for you but I'm returning mine to Best Buy. I have a new one on order. Shouldn't have to take a new device apart to make it work. Hope the new one doesn't have the issue.
Thanks.

I am having the same issue and it is not even a month old. Maybe I should call and get a replacement.
Update....I called samsung last night, guy I talked to had not even seen the Gear 2 yet and was clueless on how to troubleshoot it. Ended up sending it in for repair today.
Got my Gear 2 yesterday and same thing... when set to Auto, close ups are brilliant but anything further away looks blurry.
/Edit: RMA done with Dabs.com now
Just an update on my Op. I returned it to Best buy and got a new one. So far so good. Hope it lasts. I got the 2 year replacement for $40 so if it takes a crap again I should be covered.
Its really funny I was having an issue with the original gears camera and had the warranty and the Samsung rep said I should pay the difference and get the gear 2 and this ones camera is messed up to. Time for a BBB complaint

Same problem on gear2 Amazon replaced with new unit and new one works fine, must just be some quality control issues
Just an update. Try tapping the watch on its side on the floor lightly.
This fixed the 2 watches I have had do this.
I talked with the Samsung rep. There are no moving parts in the camera unit. Its the same as what is in the s5 front facing cam. I called Samsung to send it in but the serial number on my watch doesn't even show up in their system so I'm taking yet another one back to BestBuy.
FIXED
AND THE FIX IS.
Take a T5 screwdriver, take the 4 screws from the back and open it with your nail.
Detach the camera.
Give some little hits to the camera
Get everything and its DONE.
by now 3 Gear 2 fixed.

Gear 2 stuck in macro mode
Like many my Gear 2 is stuck in macro mode. I chatted with Samsung tech support that had me rest the device with no luck fixing it. they told me to take it to Best Buy and have a Samsung tech flash it. I'm not sure if she did it correctly but this did not fix the issue. I chatted with Samsung support again and they offered me an RMA and a free shipping label to then in TX 7-10 day return. it seemed like they were all denying the issue I told them Google suggests will finish the sentence if you type gear 2 stuck Google will suggest Gear 2 stuck in macro mode. I would have went on a negative post rampage if they did not do anything about it. but I am happy with the outcome so far. Ill keep you all posted if they fix it or replace it with a new one.

love the phone, hate the camera

I cannot put this beautiful phone down. My desktop background pops so much that it looks like I printed a picture and glued it to my screen. It is amazingly fast and responsive.. I am a little worried about scratching the ceramic back. Sure, it might be stronger than aluminum, but is it more scratch resistant too?
My only big gripe is with the camera, I have about 11 more days until I can return this to BB, and if the camera software doesn't upgrade and make this as good as my previous Nexus 6P camera, I will sadly have to return it to BB. Why isn't HDR default? Why does the flash always default to "on", even after turning it off?
When will the green model launch? That thing is sexy as hell and might be easier to find in a dark room.. I have never owned a phone other than black or gray before. But that might be my first.

Try the Google Camera port for now and if you still don't like it return it
If I'm counting correctly the 27th will be 14 days since I got this phone from Sprint... which is judgement day for me. Decisions... Decisions..

The google camera port basically makes the camera a non-issue for me. I still use stock for the monochrome photos though but seriously, just use your flash for low light photos and problem solved

Broken camera

Looking for help, I replaced the LCD screen on my note 20 ultra now the front selfie camera will not come on when I try it says warning camera failed.
The replacement that I bought came with the frame the front camera and the LCD screen everything works as normal as it should except for the camera the camera worked fine before I put the new LCD screen in. Little research and supposedly possibly the camera I got with the new screen was the international variant I have the Snapdragon note 20 ultra and was told those cameras are not compatible with the US version so I bought a US version camera and put it in still doesn't work I've done everything I can think of soft restarts restart in a safe mode only thing I haven't done is a factory reset I don't know how that would fix it but is that an option? I was also told to take my old camera and put it in with the new frame which I would have done had I'd known beforehand and thrown everything away so that camera is gone I figured hey I got a new camera why use the old one right? Any help or ideas would be gratefully appreciated I've made sure the connections are good in the phone I've checked several times like I said everything is fine except for the front camera
I just got done doing a screen/frame replacement on a Note 20 Ultra. I purchased a international unit, and the same thing happened to me. I just swapped over the original camera, and it worked fine. I believe Samsung paired the front camera on the Note 20. You're more than likely going to have to have it paired again. With Samsung releasing their parts through Ifixit soon, you maybe able to get that part working.
