[Q] Motoroot after OTA update? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I accepted the OTA update, and wanted to know if I can just use motoroot to re-gain root access. I unrooted to accept the OTA update using motoroot.

Probably. I didn't even unroot before installing the update

I used Motoroot v1.1 apk, and everything worked fine post OTA update. I never rooted with pwnmymoto, so it seems like you're fine as long as you retained stock recovery. Entitlement check did not change, and the adblocker is back working just fine!

[Q] No OTA After Un-Root

Never got an OTA notification after unroot from pure root (TW version)
Unroot to 8.4.4.5, check update, no OTA update
Update to 8.4.4.11 from microsd, check update, no OTA update
Pure root and unroot directly to 8.4.4.11, check update, still no OTA update
Is it posible to update to 3.2 from microsd right now ?
update: do wipe data, check update, still no luck
ever get it? I just unrooted and am not getting ota either....
I'm guessing it's related to /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip. I don't know how you reverted to stock, but if that file wasn't correct for your box then you probably won't see updates. Can you download and unzip and restore just that file from one of the known ota updates? Make sure the permissions are right, probably 644.

Yesterday I get the update for Jelly Bean and before I installed it and saved root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Restoring root after update works fine.
Now I have see that every new app i installed get no root access from superuser, so I un installed superuser and installed it again.....
Now I can't get for any app superuser rights.....
Anyone got a idea what I can do?
Thanks!

You don't have root anymore, if you have an unlocked bootloader, there are 2 methods to get root back. If you have a locked bootloader, you are out of luck, just have to wait for new method for JB from dev.
No I got a locked bootloader.... :screwy:
But why all apps with root worked after update JB, only new apps didn't work?

If you download "root checker" from the play store, it will tell you if you have root or not.(for real). After the JB upgrade, you lose root, but some of your apps still inherit root access from previous permission. But if you uninstall them and reinstall them, they will lose root too.

Towelroot & 4.4.2 kit Kat update

So this is what I am running into.
Updated to 4.3 and used Towelroot to gain root access, now when I try OTA update to 4.4..2 it wont install.
I have tried downloading the 4.3 firmware to Odin back to an unrooted 4.3. For some reason 7 zip wont recognize either 4.3 Firmware from the other thread.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get back to an unrooted 4.3 so that I can get the 4.4 update?
Thanks
You can unroot with SuperSU.

Why you need to Odin back to 4.3, just Odin with 4.4.2 then use towelroot to root.

What SuperSU app? The actual SuperSU? I have that, is that the option of "Full Unroot"?
You sure that will do the trick?

Then how do root again
A. From SuperSU
B. Or do you have run the whole "towelroot steps again"?
With towelroot, do you always have to uroot for ant OTA's?
Thanks...

Im having the same problem. I tried to FDR phone and I am still rooted. Ota for kit kat keeps coming up and I cannot unroot or fdr. Never had a phone that wont unroot or take ota. No bloatware was deleted or froze. Odd.

[Q] Will I get OTA updates if I unroot?

I have a rooted nexus 5 running android 4.4.4, you would probably ask what OTA update do I want, and I mean when android L is released OTA, I recently knew that you can't get OTA updates if you root your device so I'm asking if I fully unroot with SuperSU will I get the OTA update?
Depends on what you do after root. If you modify system files, then you won't receive OTA. BTW why worry about OTA after root. You can flash factory images directly or there is a seperate OTA thread where you can simply flash them even on stock recovery.
Or flash rooted stock rom via recovery.
OTA is the silliest way of doing it.

[Q] Will I keep root after OTA?

I just got my Shield Tablet and rooted it. I keep getting two OTA notifications, one says ROM Update the other says Tegra Update. Will I keep root of I do the OTA updates?
I'd like to get a recovery added, but it seems that all the recoveries are incomplete. Is there a method to install recovery without a separate computer?

You can try the paid version of SuperSU to preserve root or the THT Rootkeeper (the other big root keeper doesn't work past 4.2) If you update the device to the official OTA, you will need a PC to reflash the recovery but you will not need to unlock the bootloader again.
