[Q] Are there any sound quality issues beside speaker? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
the question is in the title : do you have sound quality issues throught hearphones like noise , artefacts...? It seems I have some random buzzing noises like a stuttering but I can't find where it could come from.

Nope, my headphone clarity is great and the speakers are about 50x better than nexus 4

None on my end either and personally I don't think the speakers are THAT bad.

I dont know what's causing this, it's the problem with random defects...

I managed to reproduce the issue : when I make a bug report from develloper option while listening to music.Bluetooth seems unaffected.I made a video of the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XZSef6fuKU
any ideas?
thanks

The speaker is a lot quieter and not as clear as my S2, but it does the job.. Only use it so often.
But, I don't know about you guys.. what's quite annoying is that in apps that force the screen counter clockwise when viewing horizontally my hand covers the speaker and I have to adjust my holding position to hear sound. It seems strange that they didn't place the speaker and mic the opposite way round.. (maybe for calls.. I don't know..)
Also annoyingly, there's such a simple solution, if only somehow all apps could be forced the opposite way then the speakers on the top left and is never covered maybe it could be incorporated into a custom rom?

Audio Issues on Tablet - Help

Does anyone have white noise/static feedback issues with the audio? Its easier to notice when I use in-ear earbuds, but if I place my ears next to the speakers I can hear it as well. I'm not sure how to describe it but it doesn't distort the noise, its almost like a layer or white noise.
It only happens when the tablet is in use, someways to easily make it occur is by pressing apps/status bar/unlock screen but after a few seconds it goes away. However when I'm listening to music the white noise is always there, especially noticeable in soft/low instrumental music. Is this normal, does this happen to anyone else?
I already sent in one of my tablets for repairs only to have it sent back saying it was fixed when it wasn't. Then I had to send it back again for a replacement, and now this new tablet has the same issue. After all this I'm not sure if this is just normal or am i just that unlucky.
Please can anyone tell me if they have any noticeable audio issues so i know if i need to return this tablet again.
I had an issue before that the speaker would crackle in YouTube. But I think that was a software issue. Whatever you described does not sound normal to me. I don't notice any kind of white noise during normal use.

No. Not from the speakers, over BT, or via a 3.5MM connection. And I have a pretty decent set of headphones that would definitely pick-up any distortion. The fact your experiencing it with all audio out makes it seem like s/w. It's not unusual to hear reports of the occasional 3.5MM jack being bad but most of the other audio related h/w is part of the circuit board. Try doing a factory reset. If it's gone after that it's something s/w or app related.

Yep. It sounds like a h/w problem.
Can you guys try these two tests below and see if you hear it? Wear earbuds, preferably in-ear earbuds as it seems to pick it up a lot clearer, and be in a silent room when doing this.
Method 1
Turn the tablet on and have it on the unlock screen, wear the earbuds and make sure not to do anything, it should be silent. Proceed to unlock the screen and see if you hear any audible white noise in the background, after a few seconds you should hear a very low but audible click. After that click the white noise disappears.
Method 2
Have the tablet unlocked, and have your earbuds on. Make sure you don't do anything for a few seconds due to the nature of this test. After that proceed to expand the notification bar (lower right corner). After it expands see if you hear any audible white noise, after a few seconds there should be a click and the white noise disappears.
Those methods are the best and easiest way to explain how I replicated the noise. I've come to believe this is a hardware issue and a design flaw in the tablet because all the note 10.1 floor models at my local best buys also have this issue.

YES! I posted something about this, with STATIC in the title, but received no responses. I get a squeaky kind of static, most evident with earbuds. I'm using Shure and they're awesome, so I don't think it's them. I'm going to try another pair, just to isolate the issue. But I hear it during videos and music. During videos, if there's no sound at a particular point in the video, I don't hear it, but as soon as someone speaks, it's there right along with the audio, in sync with it.
It's REALLY annoying, as it makes listening to soft, quiet music as I fall asleep pretty impossible.

I'm glad someone else hears this, can you try the 2 methods I listed in the post before yours? I want to see if the white noise is the same one I'm hearing.

Earpiece quality?

Does anyone have some information about the earpiece quality?
On the Nexus 4 the quality was very low as on lower volumes interferences from the wireless signal could be heard. Also i don't like phone on which the lowest volume is still much too loud.
Any experience would be very appreciated.
No we dont have any information. The phone isn't even in peoples hands with the exception of media sites.
Just wait until you receive the device and conclude for yourself (or wait for others for a full-review)
Mine's in my hand. The earpiece quality is excellent, it's very loud and clear, the best I've ever encountered!

Got my phone right here.. Already have it for like 6 hours (has been shipped today)... Did not test the headphone output yet...
Sound quality is excellent through earphones..Plenty loud..Im pretty impressed with the speakers to..More bass and clarity than the N4.. Turn the volume up on Dead Trigger 2 or listen to some dance music and you will see what i mean.
Ok, thank you very much for your answers :good:
I'm only interested in the earpiece volume. It's nice if the speaker is loud enough but i don't want the earpiece on low volumes too loud. Even more i like it if it's very quiet for on the lowest levels as i'm not all the time in a noisy environment.
If the earphone output is also quite low on the lowest level i'd appreciate that a lot. I had troubles with every Android phone so far, except the HTC One X+, beeing too loud. (And don't start a flamewar. Some people can't get it loud enough and some like phones who are able to adapt to the ambient).
Hi,
Can you tell me if you can control the volume with a wired headset ? (much like the iPhone... and unlike my Nexus 4)
Thanks !
Mine has stopped working...still makes a sound when maximising the volume but I cant hear anything in a call.
Is the Nexus 5 compatible with HD Voice on T-Mobile USA?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
not as bad as N4
When on a call on the call volume is low you can hear a faint distorted signal. It kind of sounds like the phone is working on other tasks in the background more than a distorted signal to me. It's faint but kind of annoying when you realize it. The N4 was worse though.
Has anyone else noticed this is or is it just me?

Distortion on loudspeaker only on calls?

Hi.
Can anyone test their loudspeaker on their Nexus 5 for me and post their results?.
My loudspeaker is fine when playing music or videos. However, when I enable the loudspeaker during a call (for hands free), if using any volume over half way it starts distorting like mad to the point its gets a little difficult to understand the person speaking.
Is this just my phone or a common fault?, it only seems to be happening when I use the loudspeaker to go hands free. Pretty annoying as it's something I use a lot.

I do not seem to be having those issue when using the phone hands free. I do notice at the high end the sounds gets a little distorted but nothing like you're experiencing.
Same issue here...now i don't know if it's software problem or should i send the phone for repair?

Z3 Top Speaker Crackle/Buzz

Hey all,
Is it normal for the top speaker to buzz/crackle when certain sounds are played, particularly those that are somewhat bass heavy?
A good example would be the stock notification sounds, as a lot of them cause this. In particular, the Polaris notification sound makes it rattle like crazy. The Aquila ringtone causes it too. These are just 2 of many examples I could pick out.
Test it yourself, is it normal?

This is my 3rd replacement too...
Edit: I opened up my faulty z3 due to be returned, and it also has the issue with the top speaker crackling.
Seems to be normal then. I assume with the top speaker being responsible for the lows, it just couldnt handle the bass at high volumes.
Same here
I just had my first replacement and the problem persists :crying:
I just got the Xperia Z3 this week and noticed this issue as well. I'm a little disappointed because I expected more from the purportedly improved speakers but I guess I'll live with it for now.
I also noticed that the Z3 gets pretty warm if you play music via walkman with the speaker volume at the max. What also bothers me is that there is speaker noise when using the camera app, even with sound disabled.
yeah, my Z3 has the same issue
Even if you are phoning with load speakers on max volume it crackles.
i have the same pb
my top speaker crackles during some calls at max volume...
I hope this is a software related problem...
any news on this?
Well, I don't really have "crackle" but there's a noticeable "static noise" from top speaker whenever it is active (like when watching a movie/video or even when talking to anyone), especially at high volume setting. More than in any other smartphone that I've ever used. And what's more disappointing is that I am currently using a replacement unit, the original unit had EXACTLY the same issue. I really, REALLY hope that it's a software issue and Sony will be able to improve it with future updates and it's NOT because Sony used low-quality speaker or amplifier components
I have top speaker issue after 2months...the speaker crackling sound get higher.,,and really annoying.,, sometimes not even hearing.
What to do?
My phone got 6month older??
How to solve?
Can I go for replacement?
So this is generic Z3 issue bad move for such a pricey phone...
Count me in too..

Xperia Z3 TOP SPEAKER crackle at the maximum volume

My xperia z3 top speaker crackle at the over 80% volume
I noticed this problem on some songs (walkman) or you tube (some videos)
You go to: SETTINGS / SOUND / PHONE RINGTONE / go on the top list, and for example try second song ( AQUILA ) at the maximum volume.
Do you have the same problem on your xperia z3?
I noticed that as well but it seems to only occur on specific sounds for me. I watched a YouTube video at probably 80% volume and heard that crackling. Tried another one even on full volume (both were BF4 gameplay commentaries) and heard nothing but good sound.

I noticed that this problem is present at over 80% volume, too.
I will also check for this.
Just noticed this while listening to music on a youtube video.
Noticed that my top speaker/earpiece will rattle sometimes while on a call, or when playing certain sounds such as ringtones. I wonder if I should exchange or if it's normal (for the z3) seeing as a few people have the same issue.
I replaced mine and I still have rattling during calls, at pretty much any volume. I don't hear it during music though, which makes me wonder if it may be fixed by an update.
Yeah, me also face the problem too.. Very annoying.. Hmmmm
This started to happen to me, I had been using the phone in the pool, three days later I could hardly even hear the top speaker, I ran music through the speakers for one day (taped up the bottom one), hoping it would fix the problem. but It didn't. Now after 6 days it has started to get louder again, so now I can hear callers again and the phone ring. And is now starting to make the sound you all mention here. As you all say very annoying, Sony must have a manufacturing defect on just that speaker.
Does anyone have any idea if this can be fixed with software? If not, the Z3 is going back and I'm getting either the Moto X or the Note 4
happened to me since day 1 as well. Bought in Australia.
In case anyone is wondering, I returned the phone for the Note 4 and the call quality is 10x better... actually the phone is 10x better in pretty much every way including camera. Not that the Xperia was bad at all, but it just didn't feel polished enough... hopefully the Z4 fixes things
Hi,
I could reduce this problem by enabling the "S-Force Front Surround" option in Settings> Sounds> Sound Effects.
I believe that this problem can be solved with a software update that set the correct equalization to remove that rattle from the top speaker.
Regards!
@Djuro89. Try this; fixed it for me

Hi,
This is my current equalizer settings. With this configuration the crackling of the top speaker disappeared. Also deactivated other effect options (ClearAudio+ and Surround).
Regards!
I experience this too, I thought it was water related, I'll give it a try
Hi,
I never put my phone in water.
I believe it is an equalization problem in phone software.
With the equalizer setting that I mentioned in my last post I never had this problem.
Regards!

Hi it annoys me during calls too..
Hello,
i've noticed the same defect on my Z3... It just happens at specified frequencies, i've tried changing equalization's settings and disabling clear audio+ but nothing changes. It looks like a poor speaker quality because if you lower the volume the audio is clear, don't you agree? Thank you.
