Getting RMA, best way to relock boot loader and transfer current data? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't want to set up my replacement nexus 5 again, would rather just have it backed up and ready to go as it is now.
Also will need to relock boot loader on this one.
RMA'ing because I spy 4 specks of dust: one in top left, one in top right, one in bottom right, and one faint one almost in the middle.
BUT if the RMA is worse, or has other quality compromises (since everything else on this one appears to be good) I'll just stick with this one.
Thanks

Fastboot oem lock.
It wont wipe anything. (If you unlock it again it will wipe all)
Note that you wont be able to flash roms anymore (i think, it was a long time ago since i locked a bootloader...)
But be sure to backup your stuff.
OR you can try this app. Easy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker
Cheers
EDIT: i just saw that the app doesnt support n5. Sadly...

If you can access fastboot then you could flash a custom recovery .

If you can't get to the bootloader, the device is bricked for good beyond repair.
Only ASUS knows what they can do next with it from scrapping it to just trashing it.
I took my tablet back to Best Buy and said I downloaded some apps and when I restarted the tablet it didn't work. They bought it, and said it was defective. They gave me a brand new one.
My suggestion would be to find your receipt and take it to where you bought it. When you get to customer service, play dumb. Do not talk about how you rooted and unlocked it. Make a simple explanation that is reasonable.
With this fortunate event of getting another functioning tablet, I'm taking extended precaution. I'm not rooting, nor unlocking my bootloader, at least until there is a better tutorial, and fool proof way to get to the custom recovery. There is too many precautions and not enough certainty that the recoveries will even work.
Good luck

Interesting. Unfortunately I bought from Amazon and my return period is up.

Just for future reference, if you are rooted and unlocked, when you install Goomanager, you just go into the menu (three dots in upper right hand corner of screen) and choose install open source recovery. The app does the work. No need to use fastboot. Then...and this is very important...only boot into recovery using hardware buttons: power down, then hold power and volume down, you will feel haptic vibration, then you should see ASUS splash screen and some white script in upper left hand corner. as soon as you see this, slide your finger over to volume up. You will enter TWRP recovery (blue curtains)...it will take several moments for the curtain to rise. then you have your full recovery menu in front of you. I really like using TWRP recovery (and I tried everything out there, I think). It's so easy to navigate. Makes flashing/backup/restoring a breeze.

Thanks for the tip. I remember I downloaded the Goomanager app from the play store after I was rooted and unlocked. I went to the menu, like you said. I downloaded the recovery from their, and tried to reboot, but it wouldn't let me. I never thought to try the hardware buttons to get to the recovery. I just assumed that you could reboot straight into recovery like other devices. Anyways, I may try this later on, but I'm gonna research more and watch more tutorials because seeing my device in bricked status once has kinda scarred me and made me apprehensive on modding my tablet ( my galaxy nexus on the other hand, Not so much I'll mod that all the time)

[Q] I Update my gf N5 to 4.4.3 and now everything is gone even the flash drive, help!

We updated the phone to 4.4.3 her phone is a plain vainilla N5, locked and unrooted. when it finished, the phone restarted and it was like we turn on the phone for the first time. the welcome and initial setup screen appeared. Since I sideloaded mine(mine is working fine). I didnt know if this was normal or not.
After the phone started. Two little notification icons appeared on the top left of the screen which I have never seen before. I tried to take a screenshot, but there was an error telling me I couldnt take a screenshot
http://imgur.com/3psmPCi [1]
One of the icons says there's no much space left. So I look at the storage screen and now the phone only has 128Mb of total space available
http://imgur.com/ewJDeOA [2]
everything is missing, photos, apps, contacts, everything. I tried to do a factory reset, but the final button is not working. it doenst do anything.
I tried to start the recovery through the bootloader and I get the sick android screen.
http://i.imgur.com/AwEo5tk [3]
I dont know what to do. I dont know if should flash a stock image or something. But I dont know what's the deal with the flash drive total space.
Any else has run into this? Any ideas?
EDIT:
I tried unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom recovery. No luck. After rebooting to into the custom recovery. The phone locks the bootloader again and there's no custom recovery anymore.
Also, everytime I turn off and on the phone. The initial setup screen comes up every time.
The device locks the bootloader again after unlocking it? Sounds like the eMMC chip is busted.
Try to flash a factory image, if that doesn't work you are screwed

You could try unlocking the bootloader again and see if it unlocks?? If not, the motherboard needs to be swapped. No idea how it happened, it's a random hardware failure very common with the Nexus 5. I've seen lots of devices with a busted eMMC chip. It's strange that you can still boot into your OS. May be the chip is partly damaged. Anyways, it needs to be replaced.

What are my options then? A couple of months ago we had to replace the screen through a third-party. Should I do an RMA with Google/LG. How do I explain this situation to them? Would they notice that I replace the screen?

If you've bought the device from google play store, then contact google and explain them your situation. I'm not sure whether they will notice it or not. If they open up the device, they might notice it.
If you've bought it elsewhere then visit a LG Service center and let them take a look at the device.
As per warranty guidelines, any 3rd Party repairs performed on the device voids the warranty. So, there's a strong possibility that you/your gf might need to pay up.

Nexus 5 Screen will not light up

Hey guys I've had my N5 for almost a year now but it seems to have gone kaput on me recently...
On Monday I was on a skype call, (just audio) when my phone suddenly restarted, I didn't pay much mind to it as that happened before and it would usually just cut back on, but this time, it restarted, and restarted and just didn't stop. That lead me to think its the power button being stuck so i checked it out and made sure its not being depressed and well yeah it wasn't. And soon after that the phones screen was sometimes on during the reboots and sometimes off. I knew it was rebooting because the N5 vibrates a bit when Google pops up on the loading screen in a certain way, but yeah now the screen doesn't light up at all, there's still vibrations and sounds like when I call or when I say Okay Google a few times, the LED will even light up during a call. I know the phone is "on and working" in the background but the screen doesn't light up and as such I can't touch it, any ideas and or advice friends?
bump de bump?
Possibly your backlight burnt out? Water damage?
if you are running cyanogenmod, you could be experiencing sod "sleep of death". thats when you know the phone is on and working, but the screen doesnt turn on. ive been reading lots of complaints about cm and the sod.

As the phone kept rebooting it went from seeing everything, to seeing nothing but the back light to dark, so maybe? It was just by me on my desk too so I was doubtful about the water damage but I put it in the sealed rice bag for about 24 hours just in case but still no luck.
I actually am running cyanogenmod and whenever I do have a problem I always feel that its related to CM as the phone doesn't have any physical damage...maybe I should look into that, any other ideas friends?
P.S I am using the ElementalX Kernel and UNFORTUNATELY I turned on the FAST CHARGE USB option and that makes the phone play funny with the computer, if you guys have any advice as to how I could turn off that option please do let me know

all it does is completely wipe your phone and install an older android version. flashing the factory img will do the same, except youll get the newest android version. don't use these tools, doing things the right way will be more beneficial to you. anyways, since cm is having issues, try a different rom, or just go stock.

Well i got mine through the Play Store and I did think about an RMA, I know there was that free screen replacement thing going on but the customer rep sounded like he had no idea what I was talking about. and I'm thinking its a flex cable issue as my phone hasn't incurred any damage from drops or bumps or anything since i make it a point to be stationary while using phone, but....where the sim card tray is, that "bridge" or thin piece on the bottom side toward the phone has split as a result of my bad sim card ejecting, but that was when i first obtained the phone, also there is another split, inside the phone there is a canopy above the charging port that is split but i still know that occurred long before this, and its not even an electrical piece along with the sim card bridge thing.
BUTTT yeah im afraid if I RMA they will use that as an excuse to charge me $400, even though I know it's not playing any sort of factor in my screen acting up....Is there a policy on that?

So when you hold down the power button and the vol - for about 15 seconds the bootloader screen doesn't show up? If so, yeah try to RMA.
I will chat it up with one of the customer service peeps and see what they think then, and maybe even hopefully one will know about the replace anything deal

Check to make sure you have the newest drivers (there's a sticky in the general section with all the useful info). If you bought it from the play store see if you can get an RMA - Google seems to have a good rep with this. It wouldn't hurt to flash a factory image to erase everything either before sending it off (privacy and whatnot). If you have the newest TWRP (2.8.0.1) if you boot into recovery and you should be able to access the internal storage without having to select anything (in case there's anything there not backed up). Boot to recovery is volume down twice and power I think.

Well now that I used that tool I'm not sure if my recovery is still TWRP or if it's stock, it flashed a stock factory image I'm told, but that doesn't remove the Kernel and Recovery too does it? I wanna get it as stock as possible before I sent it out. At this point I believe it has a factory image but I can't say for sure about anything else

Warranty return question (cannot flash stock ROM/recovery, or lock)

Hi.
I awoke to find my N5 sitting on the initial Google/unlocked padlock screen. I force turned it off and turned it back on - sat on the same screen for over a minute before getting the Google colours animation. Eventually boots into what looks like a factory reset. However, it hasn't picked up the SIM, the camera (and loads of other stuff) doesn't work. There is a warning at the top that storage space is running out - going into that is says Total space 128Mb (available 6.92Mb) - the 32Gb has disappeared! Factory reset doesn't work, clicking the erase button does nothing.
Using WUG's toolkit (yes I know people recommend using adb commands but I more or less know what's going and it's basically just a quicker way of doing the same thing) it will not flash a fresh stock ROM, will not flash the stock recovery and will not relock the device. It takes several minutes to go into TWRP.
Basically, something is very wrong! I've put in for a warranty replacement but am concerned that I cannot get it back to its locked status. Any advice on this, or for dealing with Google if they give me hassle over that? Their warranty return claims they can charge up to the full amount for the replacement if they deem it's damaged outwith warranty conditions.
I only really unlocked to use Droidwall/Adfree and Titanium Backup so have not been tinkering with anything deeper than that.
Thanks in advance if anyone can offer advice.
Use the fastboot command to lock rather than a toolkit so we can know what is going on. Lock it then reboot and let us know if it is still locked or not.
If it is unlocked again after reboot, usually means your NAND is fried and there is nothing you can do.
Only Google will not care if it is unlocked. LG and carriers typically do, so if you didn't buy from play, your warranty is probably lost

Hi, and thanks for the quick response.
When I issue the command the state on the phone display changes to locked, but on reboot it's unlocked again... so I guess the NAND is fried. I did but it from Play though so should be okay, from what you say? I have a replacement on the way from them, I was just concerned about the state I was sending mine back in.
On the same (perhaps) topic, could this be anything to do with a Qi charger? I bought one - this one - for the girlfriend's N4 for xmas and she's been using it quite happily. I've used my N5 on it just a few times and it was on it when it "died". I'm just unsure as to whether to advise her to stop using it with the N4 or not, given that has happened and I've no idea if it's related!
Thanks again.
Yeah return to Google is fine, non issue.
Qi? Nah... Just bad luck.

Faulty screen 6039y

Good evening lads, I'm facing some problems with my display, the LCD presented some dots, more like small sqares(with sharp corners), they are not busted pixels (they're to big to be busted pixels), in different areas of the screen.. More on the bottom, and a few on the middle of the screen..
I should mention that i have not dropped the phone so that the dots would have an explication.
I made this thread in order to see if there are any other users who experienced this problem, and if they did.. What it could be done
Ive got a few on mine. I counted 6 or 7 just on the top half of the screen. A few on the bottom half. I only see them when phone is booting up on the black bootloader screen. They show up green.
Mine are visible all the time, Would vodafone warranty cover them ? Because, tehnically..it's not an software problem(That I could cause)

It has to. If you haven't dropped your phone, then those spots are hardware issue.
They gave you a faulty device, and you have the right to get it fixed/replaced for free.

You will have to return the phone fully to stock properties.
There is a thread which shows you how to fully restore stock rom, relock bootloader, etc.
Even rooting violates your warranty.
Bootloader unlock is even worse.

I did, I flashed an stock recovery, locked the bootloader, deleted the whole system/boot/cache,etc..basically wiped everything, and on my warranty chart, I noted that my phone isn't turning on after an update trought official app, and that I have white spots on the display[this was the one that interested me], so..They took it, and gave me a new one after an review in service[I forgot to make the partitions back as they were, but..they didn't looked there]
Thank you, T.C
