I just got my Nexus 5 and has been charging for 3 hours but it does not start when I press the start button... Is that normal, do I need a sim card in order to start it? All my previous phones could start without a sim and use them over wifi only.

It should work fine w/o a SIM. Are you holding the Power button for a few seconds? When off and plugged in, Nexus devices show a battery charging animation on the screen for a few moments.
You don't need a Sim to get it to turn on.

Yes, I tried many times, holding for quite a few seconds.
There is no animation of any sort, when I connect the charger the red light right above it starts blinking and that's about it.

Oh... it sounds like either the battery is bad or not connected properly. Sounds like you may need to RMA it. Usually devices nowadays have enough charge out of the box to turn them on and for it being that new, I doubt the battery would have been that depleted upon arrival. I would Google "LG nexus blinking red light" and see what that indicates.
I'm currently writing this from my new nexus 5...no Sim. Not activated. Signed in on my WiFi. Haven't decided which carrier I want to switch to yet. I currently have Verizon obviously I can't activate it with them. Love the phone so far!

This happened to me as well. While it was charging before the first boot it would only show the battery symbol. Only after removing the charger cable was it able to do it's first boot and normally I might add.
RMA the first Nexus 5 I had an issue with, I got a second one, they sent me a brick again. This time not even the led light blinking, nothing. Tried everything over and over again phone did not respond to anything. RMA for the second time, waiting for the 3rd and last NEXUS I'll ever order until Google get their act together. It was a present for my girlfriend and she was 'really happy' opening and finding 2 bricks in a row. And that's only the beginning. I can only imagine what defects I'll find once the phone actually starts.
Since I soon have to get a new phone, my Galaxy Nexus is getting old can you advise if any of the new phones have multi band functionality - T-Mobile/At&t/Spring also. I'm looking at Note 3, S4, iPhone, HTC, up and coming Nokia phones maybe. Any recommendation are very appreciated. Thanks.

Wow that's weird, what charge cable are you using. Are you sure there's power at the wall outlet you're using. Two bricks in a row is a long shot.

I tried everything that I found online. I used the original charger/cable first of course. Then I tried a few different outlets at home and then a computer just in case. Then I tried the original charger with my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus and works fine. Then I tried my old SGN charger with the Nexus 5 and a few different outlets, didn't work. I left it overnight with the original charger nothing happened. I tried it also in my office power outlets just in case. Not to mention all the different button combinations that were suggested online. All that twice for each phone.
I just had enough with the Nexus 5 really. Would appreciate any recommendations in terms of multi band LTE phones, thanks for the replying.

A few hours ago my girlfriend was just looking at her Triumph (was watching for messages so she wasn't actually doing anything on it) when the screen turned off. Now it wont turn back on. Have tried the power button, turning on the bootloader, and removing the battery for 5 minutes. No matter what we can't get the phone to turn back on. Any ideas on what has just happened? The phone is rooted with gingerbreak with titanium backup installed. That's it. We got the phone at Best Buy and this is our second phone. We're probably past our 30 days so this kind of bugs me! Any idea what we can do from here? Any other tricks to try?
As a quick update, Best Buy tells me that an Exchange counts as an original transaction. So I'm only 17 days into my "new" transaction. I can't believe neither of these Triumphs have lasted more than three weeks :\
Did you have it connected to the charger while using it? I have noticed it gets very hot even without the charger being plugged in. It may have over heated. Just a thought. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

No, the charger wasn't connected at the time. It was just sitting there with the screen on. The Significant Other wonder why it wouldn't turn off so she hit the power button and it didn't do anything. Finally the screen just went black but the backlight was still obviously on so she pulled the battery and put it back in. From there, she pushed the power button and the virgin mobile logo came on and nothing else. She had to remove the battery again. She put the battery back in once more and was able to get the Virgin mobile logo one more time. It froze after the logo and she pulled the battery one more time. After that the phone refused to turn on at all. When connected to the charger it doesn't do anything. Still completely lights out on the phone.
Man that sucks. I hope your able to find a fix.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I let my Triumph lose all its battery to charge it back up 100% (performing a full battery charge cycle), and it will no longer turn on. even when I have it plugged in the red light indicator will not light up most of the time.
Funny thing is, this is also my second exchange from best buy and luckily im still within 30 days and i have a replacement plan. I really suggest getting the replacement plan (its $30, good for a $300 phone), because unlike best buys other mobile protection plans, you dont pay monthly, you're covered for 2 years, and if you get tired of getting the same phone, they will give you a $300 store credit card.
You know my phone did something similar, my phone died and when i went to plug up the charger i got nothing. I think there might be something wrong with the charging ports on these phones, try wiggling the charger while its plugged in, thats what i did and it finally took a charge

upon closer inspection of the charging port, i noticed the female micro usb port was actually pushed further inside, thus preventing most chargers to work. I found a rocketfish charging adapter from best buy that seems to work perfect while my other cable didnt work at all.
As an update, we went back to best buy and sure enough they count the exchange as a new transaction, so I was only 17 days into my second transaction. They exchanged me another phone on the spot and so now we're on the third triumph. GPS checked out ok and the MEID was the correct length. The screen is the worst of the 3 (some pretty bad backlight bleed out onto the screen itself from the sides). I was picky about it but the gf isn't since you can't even see it unless the screen is completely black. So we'll see how this one holds out!
My guess is as was assumed, the battery wasn't getting charged. When the battery was removed for 30 minutes or more we were able to get the logo to show up and nothing more. My guess was the charger wasn't making contact anymore. We wouldn't want to keep a phone like that anyways but it seems like this might be a problem for these phones.
Every once in awhile mine will not power back on. It happened to me a couple of times shortly after I bought the phone.
I tried pulling the battery a couple of times and powering back up, no go.
What worked... remove battery, press power button for a couple of secs, replace battery, power back up. Has worked every time... so far.
My guess is need to drain some capacitors or that I had invoked part of boot recovery sequence without finishing?

Have you noticed the "I just broke my Triumph's Screen"- post? We'll If you saw my cracked Triumph, well that's another issue that I just discovered. The battery drained all the way and now it will not take a charge anymore. This is the exact same problem OP is having. Regarding this issue I will open up my phone sooner or later when I get a new one and take pics. I don't mind seeing wth is in there, maybe everything's held up by Elmer's glue lol. I'll make sure to let everyone know hopefully I'll do this within a couple days.
It seems like dead
If Motorola and VMUSA are not serious about resolving issues for Triumph then this phone will be dead anyways - customers won't be buying those. The number of returns are far more than new purchase. It seems like Motorola stopped manufacturing these.
So this phone will either get Ice Cream Sandwich update or it is end of life for this phone.
I have a us spec wifi xoom. Or I've had is perhaps more of a correct statement now.
What happened was this:
Tablet was working fine in the evening. Had about 80% power left in it.
Today in the afternoon got around to it and had to do some stuff on it...and it was dead.
Wouldn't react to either the Power Button, or the Volume Up plus Power button.
Initial thoughts - ah some app caused the battery to drain. Or was it the custom ROM. No worries, will hook it up to the charger.
So i hook it up and the charging light comes on. But XOOM wont turn on while plugged in. Its been charging for an hour plus, LED's still white and XOOM's still unresponsive.
Any ideas what to do?
Did you try holding volume up and power for a few seconds? Sometimes than can take 5 to 10 seconds to work.

was it overclocked?
Yes. 1,2Ghz
if I was you, I'd either have my dealer send it in or, if that is not option to you, open it up and disconnect the battery for a little while...
maybe another idea: how does your power-button feel? From the symptoms it would also be plausible that just that one button had a malfunction. You wouldn't be able to unlock your xoom, power+vol-up wouldn't reset the thing, if you configured your xoom to use the charge-led while the xoom is powered on, it'd glow once you plugged your xoom in, etc... Does your pc detect your xoom if you plug it in via usb?
No the XOOM isn't detected by the computer. Power button feels as it always felt. Clicky and responsive.
As for opening it up, I dont have a TORX screwdriver or however that thing is called, to open the XOOM up. I was thinking along those lines a swell, disconnect all power for a while and then try. Will try to get the tools tommorow and see waht happens.
Thanks for the suggestions though.
If you've got an sdcard in it remove it and try the usual power in tricks.
I've read sdcards can stop the Zoom powering on especially if it goes completely flat...
Tried that already. No go unfortunately. But thanks nonetheless.

Battery had charge in it when I first picked up with the issue. LED was white. If battery is dead LED is red.
Frying the processor - maybe. Hope not
If you have a white light then that means the device is powered off. If you can boot it to the dual core screen then we can help.

Charger works, since battery LED shows full charge
I had a similar problem and disconnecting the battery for a bit worked like a charm, I bought my torx set from walgreens for 5 bucks (comes with many different bits) also any hardware store will carry a small set, you will only need to unscrew 4 screws and move 2 clips up, 2 screws on the bottom and 2 screws on the battery connector. I slipped a piece of paper in between the battery connector and the xoom board waited about 30 seconds removed the paper and screwed it back together and it turned on just fine. the whole process should take about 5 minutes at most. Ifixit.com has a great teardown of the xoom trust me in the end it will be worth it.

No problem let me know if you need any more assistance.
I'm having almost the exact same problem with my WiFi Xoom. I went to restart it yesterday and it turned off and will not turn back on. When I plug it in to one of my docks, it shows fully charged (green light.) Powering on with the up volume does nothing (I held them both for 30 seconds.) I disassembled it last night and disconnected the battery for some time but it still will not power up. I plan to spend some more time on it this evening if possible.
The only other details about it is I'm rooted running Team EOS ICS 1.0.0 with the stock kernel provided with the ROM.
Anyone come across this? I put it on standby last night after reading a bit of my book on it, and it had around 50% power remaining. This morning, it was totally unresponsive; pressing the power button does nothing at all. I've charged it for 12 hours in the meantime.
I've done the following all with and without the power attached:
- Pressed and held power for 15 seconds through to a minute
- Pressed and held volume up with power to attempt to get into recovery for up to a minute
- Pressed and held volume down with powerfor up to a minute
- Pressed and held power while touching screen (read that one off another forum)
I guess potentially it could be on and in a crashed state and unresponsive to the power, so maybe in a weeks time when it runs out of juice, I'll be able to charge it and power it back up, but in the meantime, I'd welcome suggestions.
A few weeks ago I updated it to the official ICS build that was released, but did the update myself rather than using KIES, as KIES didn't even recognise my Tab's firmware original version. It's been absolutely fine before the update, and since. I only mention it because I've read about the Samsung build of ICS being prone to self bricking itself, but I couldn't determine what the symptoms of this vulnerability were.
Thanks for any help offered,
Will
did you try connecting USB cable and plugging it into your PC? did u get any activity? can ADB recognize your tab?
I think your tab just ran out of juice and the battery's protection circuit has kicked in. Try taking it to an electronic shop and plugging in different chargers preferably one with an output more than 2.1 amps to kickstart the charging. Plug it in and wait till the charging animation starts.

Had the same problem while on holidays. Once the battery goes below a certain level, you won't be able to charge it through USB any more. Instead you need to use the wall charger.
I think it's bad enough that the 7.7 doesn't have a micro USB port, but things like that are just stupid and Samsung made a big mistake here. It don't think it's the same with the newer tablets though. It's also not possible to just buy cables or chargers for this strange Samsung port, so when you forget your wall charger at home at some point you won't be able to use your tablet any more.
As long as you charge with the USB cable early enough, you can avoid it though.
A few months ago I experienced the same thing, the Tab just wouldn't turn on anymore.
I tried all there is without any luck.
Contacted amazon and they replaced it with a new one in less than 48 hours.
So far not Problems with the new device.
I have the P6800 and this morning I took it off charge. Put it into standby and only used it for about 20 mins then left in standby all day. It had about 95% remaining when I did so.
Picked it up this evening and the lower left area of the screen was warm and it would not switch on. Didn't think of the ADB idea but will try this next time but I had to reset it and when it powered on tonight after the reset, it was down to 15%. Within about 2 mins of checking stuff it was down to 3%.
Something is running when it is in standby but as I can't switch it on I can't check with BetterBatteryStats or CPUState to know what is wrong.
It does this every day. I am tempted to do a factory reset and reinstall only limited software.
Dave...
I see this thread is a little old but this has just happened to my P6810 too. A pity nobody reported back what the end result was.
My device had at least 95% battery last night but today I can't get it to respond at all, I've tried the wall charger and still nothing.
Anything else someone could suggest for me?
Edit. I tried getting anything from it connected to my PC but it couldn't find a device there. However I then tried it on the wall charger again and now get a blue battery icon, quite big, with a five step animation indicating that it is charging.
No idea how it went flat as the battery on this lasts a long time assuming the screen isn't on. When it boots properly I'll have a look at what the most recent apps I installed were as it has only done this once. Before this it has been perfect for the three weeks I've had it.

hhmmm, interesting.
I was having trouble with wifi just before this happened. Both my GS2 and this have been claiming to connect to my wifi but aren't actually getting an IP address from it.
I can't remember if it was last night or the night before but I manually set an IP address, the signal strength is fine as my abode isn't very big.
After it has recharged I'll have a poke and see what I can find, thanks for the reply.
So my device seems to be working fine again. It had gone SO flat that the date and time were incorrect!
After I could power it on I had a look at Better Battery Stats and nothing looked wrong so I have no idea what happened. None of the apps I'd installed the day before it played up had long wakelocks and weren't running when I turned it off.
For reference they were:
My Tracks
MyTrails
Google Earth
AndSMB
I'd turned both of the GPS tracking devices off before I turned it off for the night.
It hasn't played up since but it hasn't been long so I'll see what happens.
Yeah, the sleep of death is incredibly annoying. Honestly, the GTab 7.7 is a **** device. Samsung made way too many mistakes and won't do anything to fix it.
A similar thing happens to me every once in awhile. The way i check to make sure everything alright is to see if it boots into download mode. I just leave it plugged in for a couple hours and it eventually comes back on.

Unbelievable! ... this trick still works ... thank you very much for you help ...
^^ yo, this 'trickle charge' trick did NOT work on my (long) dead P6800... any other suggestions??
Quite strange because my Samsung GT-P6800 tablet was fully charged, it went completely blank dark as if it was off. To my amazement, SMS keeps dropping and calls kept coming in. Yet it is still as blank as though the tab was off. I pressed the power button and the volume up bottom for it to reboot. It rebooted without the screen coming up. It has been blank for two days now. What could be the cause? And what possible solution can be given?
So had my watch 3 days and it's dead won't turn on just starts with Sony logo then turns off sometimes it just lights the back light for few seconds then shuts off called Sony looks like I'm sending it back. Hi, I just got my smartwatch 2 about 3 days ago and today I wake up to find it dead, the battery was fully charged when I went to bed and in the morning the thing just wouldn't turn on, sometimes the screen lights up slightly but is still blank, just like you said. Holding the power button down to reset it just brings up the sony logo and that soon disappears so I'm left with an expensive dead toy which the PC wont even recognise. Not happy :/

Just an update:
After plugging in to a mains charger and leaving it for 5mins (blank screen and no sign of any life in the thing) I installed Sony's update utility and thought I'd give it one more go. I plugged in the watch (at first it tried to install driver and failed), then after opening the update programme and finding the smartwatch 2 option and re-plugging in the watch & tapping the power button quickly once, boom the computer detected the watch (it said the battery level was now 76% so that rules out a dead battery as I only charged for a few mins). From then onwards the update programme installed the relevant drivers and allowed me to reinstall the firmware. Finally managed to get some life into the watch, but, and there's a but...ever since I managed to reinstall the firmware the smartwatch kept crashing or freezing at a certain time and not responding to any inputs, no matter how many times I reset the watch, but I eventually fixed it!
I've had to uninstall all the smart extra apps and reset the watch a few more time and connect to my phone with a fresh setup and now finally things seem to be working again, but it's been a whole lot of hassle and not what I was expecting at all, let's just hope it lasts...

Just had this happen to my 2 day old Smartwatch 2.
I switched it on after charging to see 2 of my apps not showing on the watch, Smart Camera and Call Handler, both bang up to date and still showing in the Smart Connect app on my Samsung S3. All other apps seemed fine at this point. So I switched the watch off and back on again to be greeted by a garbled display on the watch..switched it back off and on again and this time it only booted as far as the Sony logo.
Thanks to the help on this thread I downloaded the Sony update tool which allowed me to reinstall the firmware and i'm now back up and running.
I do have a theory as to what might have caused the problem. I used a mobile phone mains charger to charge the watch for the first time just before the problems. I am going to stick to using the supplied usb lead and connecting it to my laptop from now on. I dont know if this will help stop the firmware from corrupting but i'm not taking any chances....

After 2 weeks I have this same issue. The update tool won't recognise the watch though so I think I have to return it.

Sorry if this is too obvious and you've already done it many time. Did you do the whole "turn off watch", run program, plug the USB end in your computer and then plug in the microUSB end into your watch and in less than a second after plugging the microUSB into the watch, press and hold the powerbutton on the watch?

Honestly I tried it over and over. I tried pressing, holding, everything with the update tool running immediately after plugging in the USB cable. After an hour of messing about I gave up and arranged to return it. I know it worked for others but it definitely didn't work for me.
I would have accepted a replacement but it wasn't an option so I'm getting the money back and I decided to go for a Pebble instead. I really liked the Smartwatch 2 but I did realise when using it that the colour screen and touchscreen were less important to me than the core experience (watch + personalisation + notifications). Fingers crossed I'll get all that with the pebble and not need to charge it quite so often.
Thanks for trying to help!
I had it running for a few weeks but eventually I started seeing some weirdness. Firstly it became less responsive and then it will reboot on its own. Yesterday it failed completely where it will hardly remain turned on for a while. So yesterday I connected it to sony update software and update was presented. I flashed that update, after that it won't reboot, no response at all, as if bricked. After 20-30 minutes it started responding but this time it was even worse. Literally unusable. Backlight won't turn on, it won't register touch on right hand side of screen except on left hand side icon row. Can't swipe either.
Infact this is pretty much useless now.
Never expected such a poor quality device from such a reputed company. A piece of ****.
Not sure if warranty will be honoured on this as I don't even have receipt on purchase from ebay. However I have full box and all accessories. If this is not sorted this will be last piece of electronics I will buy from sony.
I'm still waiting for mine to come back from repair been over a month now.

Dawn my watch started stuffing up today. Would keep buzzing and resetting showing the Sony logo. Plugged it in to charge and it seems to be stuck on 0% battery and gets pretty warm when charging. I need to try out the tips suggested to see if it fixes it.
So I have a galaxy note 3 tmobile and I plug it in to charge via micro USB and it shows the phone is charging but the phone doesn't actually charge? When I try to charge it through the mains whilst turned off, it just vibrates every 2 seconds and shows a line across the screen as though something was going to show but stopped. Kind of thing you would see with a knackered screen. It works just fine when powered on and I don't have a spare battery. I know it's not the cable because I have 3 different ones and it happens with all of them. Anyone know what this is?? Please help

hi ivan, i have the same problem since yesterday on my note 3 n9005. I dont know how to fix it also others dont have any answers in the forum did you resolve the problem on your own
thanks
I got this problem yesterday. Phone went from 74% to 1% in a matter of hours. now when i plug it in to the wall charger it also vibrates.
Been lurking around google and many people seem to have this issue and they all talk about the power button being stuck. I took the phone apart and it seems with the note3 they used a different power button than the note and note2 .
Now if i have the phone off and pull the battery the constant vibrating seems to stop. Ill let you know if it does in fact charge while being off but Im running out of ideas. Anyone have any advice?
