[Q] How do you get more then 160 characters on the hangouts sms? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how do you get more then 160 characters on SMS hangouts app? i thought yesterday it was auto converting it to mms once i hit 160 characters but today it just stops at 160 and doesnt let me write more until i send it. seem a little annoying have to do that on long messages

Just tried on mine and it simply let's me carry on beyond 160 and just turns it into multiple SMS's. So working as it always has.
I can't see a setting anywhere that would change this behaviour. Perhaps try to clear the hangouts cache in app settings c

I am also having this issue.

im guessing this is a problem on sprint?

When I was on Sprint 2 years ago I had the Nexus S 4G and the stock android messaging app would never go past 160 characters. I had to resort to using third party SMS apps like chompsms to send multiple text. And even then I had to enable CDMA text from chompsms's settings for it to smoothly work.

Someone correct me if Im wrong, but I believe CDMA limits texts to 160 characters. Since Sprint uses CDMA they have that limit (Verizon might too), however most messaging apps will break the message apart into 160 character chunks and send them out that way, even if the app itself shows one continuous message. GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile) can go beyond that limit apparently, or at least hide it better. Apparently Hangouts doesn't split the message on CDMA or it doesn't properly recognize it's on a CDMA network or some other issue.
I would post a link to an article but I'm new to posting on the forums. The website imore . com has an article about it. You should be able to google site:imore + CDMA 160 character limit

Need a way to unlock the 160 text limit. Want all messages to be MMS

I'm really tired of long incoming and outgoing messages being split up into multiple messages. The only way for me to prevent this is to "attach" a photo or blank subject line to each outgoing message. This unlocks the character limit, turns the message into MMS and allows it to be sent unbroken.
Some phones do this by default, others do not. I've heard its a combination of the way your carrier handles the data and the way your phone handles messages. Of course your carrier will never admit that its a handy 'tweak' that allows them to charge you for each broken up message rather than one long one.
I'm running a old gb version of MIUI but recently switched to JBMIUI (switched back because I love the stability of the gb version)
To be more specific.
There appears to be a hard limit of 160 characters. Is there a way to everride this somehow? Software mod or app tweak? Go SMS pro still breaks up the messages.
There is noway.

Are you on 2G or 3G? Back in my Desire says on 2G it used to split my texts up.

Hi
Greeting,
According to my knowledge as we go typing the character limit increases from 160 to next(whatever it might be) and the single message gets converted into 2 message n so on but when you send those message they go packed together and the receiver get all the messages packed in one message(you will be charged for every message) . As the text increases the phone converts it into mms if your message size is about 1 kb ( I might b wrong about mms size never used it) ,
So basically you keep typing and the msg will get converted into mms. No need of subject (look my Attachment their is no subject but still its a.mms)
2. Even if you send multiple message packed in one msg it also depends on the receivers phone how to accept it if his multiple msg text limit is for eg. 1000 characters it will convert the renaming message into message no.2.
Its confusing if you havent understood I can make it simple

On CM 9+ there is no issue with long SMS. They appear as one long text. Converting them to mms in NZ would cost a fortune as SMS are essentially free but MMS cost.

Does data with out WiFi work? Its imperative that you check that since MMS travels through data. Also does newt support t mobile? I remember I had to choose a carrier

Yes it excepts tmobile and yes data works ive even turned off wifi to make sure and data works fine, this has me stumped ive tried every apn setting and still nothing thats why i was inquiring about what controls the mms file wise or if there is something in the build.prop that isnt right,it lets me choose either at&t or tmobile, keeps saying the dreaded "Generic network failure"
You may need to set to default apn. Google play has apps and downloads for it. Might not hurt to give it a try.

. Maybe try go sms app on market for kicks to see if its software related or something screwy . I had to actually call att once due to in there system mms pics was disabled on phn. Also see if you can recieve from other carriers and your carrier. You may just wanna ask for t2 support as t1 support just read from computer screen. Good luck let us know if we can assist you

[Q] Having trouble sending sms/mms

*Note
I am on sprint
So I got nexus 5 yesterday, and cant seem to properly send or receive MMS.
I tried with and without WIFI, and to no avail.
I tried with and without google voice, 3rd party messaging app such as (go sms)
Is there solution to this? I just recently came back to android and im quite confused.
The mms won't get sent regardless of network im on.
I'm having the same problem. I can send them but I am not receiving any.

Did you come from iPhones?
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:18 PM ----------
I had the same problem coming from my iPhone 5. Its because your number is tied to iMessage. So if you still have your iPhone, go to settings, messages, turn off iMessage. And you should be good.
Actually no, i had my samsung galaxy s2 bricked and had no phone for few month. So my number is not associated with iphone stuff at all :/
Does your APN have the correct MMS settings for your carrier?
Regards,
Dave

Go to:
Settings > More... (under wireless & networks) > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
If there's no APN for Sprint then go find the correct APN details on the web or ask Sprint.
OR (have not tried this method)

Nexus 5 on iWireless (Iowa Wireless) Megatalk Pay-in-advance - Not able to send or receive MMS
Simply took my Nexus 4 SIM card, plugged it into my new Nexus 5.
Default APN settings attached. Wife complains that when she updated to SMS in Hangouts 2.0 on her Nexus 4, her MMS is now broken as well.

Also, I tried using Handcent SMS to see if it was simply a problem with Hangouts 2.0. It didn't work
I tried using the 'smart' settings in MMS setting as well as selecting Iowa Wireless directly and neither worked.
Having the same issue on iWireless. Had customer service screw with my n5 for about an hour last night and they got sending mms working receiving not so much. I have since screwed with it, and sending no longer works.
Anyone else have any luck?

Do you have a nexus 4 around? Try deleting all the APNs you currently have, and creating new ones to match the values that get set on the Nexus 4. I haven't been able to test my MMS so maybe PM me and we can test it out and then post our settings to this thread.

Update:
I added the PIAPicture Messaging APN to match what the Nexus 4 had when it did its "Reset to Default" in the APN settings. I don't understand why the APN 'default' settings over the air would be different between the Jelly Bean Nexus 4 and the KitKat Nexus 5.
Also, Now that the Nexus 4 got the KitKat upgrade, it defaults to the same settings that my Nexus 5 had; and it couldn't send/receive MMS.
I redid the settings in the Nexus 4 to match what I put on my Nexus 5 and it sends/receives MMS fine with the Messaging app (not the Hangouts app)
In summary, there appears to be some issue with the Hangouts app receiving MMS even after changing the APN settings to be correct. I was able to receive 1 MMS, then the rest come in as,
"Touch to download MMS message. Size:115KB. Expires 11/25, 1:23PM."
(the size changes depending on the size of the MMS however, which means it is 'sorta' seeing the MMS)
Whenever I touch the message, it looks like it is starting the download but times out.

MMS on ATT. How do I get it to work?

I've done a done of searching and I have no idea how I haven't found anyone with this issue. I can't get MMS to work on my N5. Textra just says unable to retrieve MMS and that I should check my APN settings but I can't find what settings should be in there. All my searching just comes up with MMS settings for some prepaid service.

MMS works on hangouts just fine. Try using that or check your apn settings.

Google: LTE apns for ATT. Hope this helps.

I'm having the same issue with Textra. I'm not sure when it exactly started. I think when I updated Quantum ROM to 3.15, but maybe when I froze the stock messaging app. I froze messaging because I would get an alert for incoming message both from messaging and from Textra and even if I swiped the messaging alert away, it would just pop back. I've tried unfreezing messaging and that didn't help (but I'm not getting the extra alert, now). I've found the APN settings on another post in xda forums, but they weren't different from my own. I then when through all of Textra settings and found one for APN settings and it had different MMS APN settings than the phone (it was set to cingular instead of att). I've made them match now and am waiting see if I can receive MMS again. I'd be a little surprised if this fixes it, though, because Textra didn't have any trouble with MMS last month and I never went into the setting for it before.

If you're still having issues with this, I finally got Textra to work on AT&T by changing the size limit of mms to 1mb or below. I emailed Textra's devs and they told me that some carriers limit the size of mms. I guess Textra compresses mms automatically because I was able to send and receive photos just fine after I changed that setting. I was so frustrated with the APN settings, but it turned out to just be the size limit issue. How that helps.

[Resolved] T-mobile Messaging problem sending receiving MMS - SMS

Like the title says.
BASIC INFO
Here's some basic info. I live in NYC, have t-mobile, have experienced the issue with with my Moto X (T-mobile - aka GSM unlocked) and in the past T-mobile HTC One. both running 4.4 and 4.4.2. Using the stock apps, no third party stuff.
THE ISSUE
My MMS have been hit or missed. They all show as sent on my Moto X but don't always get received (I confirm with the people I'm sending to & check "view details")
This has been going on for like 2 months. 2 days ago, I've been getting SMS really late. for example, receiving SMS 2 days later (I check the timestamps)
TROUBLESHOOTING
So far i've done EVERYTHING lol:
factory reset
3 moto x warranty exchanges
Tried using a T-mobile HTC One
reset app caches
tried not installing any (just factory apps and settings as a controlled variable)
tried different locations (with without WiFi)
sent MMS with images below 1mb limit and even smaller just to be safe
Using new SIM cards with EACH phone
I have concluded that T-mobile has network issues they refuse to acknowledge and I plan on leaving them for a better carrier, cheaper isn't better in T-mobile's case.
Any wanna offer some wisdom, Could someone help a brother out? Thanks in advance!
Motorola (along with my own testing) has confirmed that the stock messaging app has bugs for sending receiving MMS/SMS
I am having a smiliar issue with sms and mms. I am working on a S4 clone (w/ 3G only). It use to be able to send sms to other phones. Recently, it can only send to T-Mobile carriers only. I can receive sms, mms from any other carriers. Sometimes, I can rarely send sms and mms to other carriers. Maybe once in every 20 times. Most of the time, it says "Sending..." and then auto notification saying "not send". Sometimes, the auto notification are instant (pops up right after I hit send button). I am using the stock msg app. any idea? I triple checked my APN and it goes online fine.
