So I've searched and search and haven't really found an answer to this question... If I have my Verizon Galaxy S4 rooted and nothing else (no custom ROM's or weird mods or anything just the root,) and my phone tried downloading an OTA update last night (which I stopped out of fear of a problem), can I download the update without causing a problem to my phone? I know I may lose the root, and I'm ok with that, I just want to know if it won't A) brick my phone or B) wipe all my data. Everything I've found conflicts, some people say you can do OTA stuff without any issue but that you will lose root, others say you can't and itll break your phone.. Just looking for a straight answer here. Thanks!!

Normally it isn't a problem to update OTA when rooted. The only thing that will change is that you Lose your root access.
Thanks man

I apologize to all if this is in the wrong category or this has been answered already. I am new to his site and relatively new to the ROMS and Rooting
Basically what happened is I rooted my evo in order to wifi Tether, this worked fine, however, i made the rookie mistake of updating my phone which may have removed the root because my root programs say i no longer have root priveleges.
Next I figured since its not rooted anymore I'd be able to update to the latest software 3.7, however this proved to not work either as it will find the update when i search for updates and wont install.
Now i am confused, should i reroot my phone, and flash the rooted version of the 3.7 update rom, should i factory reset, or am i just stuck with this phone the way it is now.
Thanks in advance
I would like to know how I'm supposed to deal with this new recent update that pretty much disables my phone every single night from when the pushes started (2-3 days ago?). My phone is currently unusable...
Also, I've searched and searched and I can't seem to find any method to permanently disabling all automatic updates on my rooted HTC Thunderbolt, is this possible? I've tried freezing all bloatware, it still pushes updates on my phone, only it's much more aggressive now. The update gets pushed on my phone at least once a day at night without warning.
Just fyi I am a complete noob and it took me probably something like 5 data wipes and several days of searching, trial & error to get my phone rooted.
-_-
Please halp :/
A fix that I found...
Every day last week I had to factory reset my phone after the update bricked it. I rooted my phone after installing an app and I couldn't find its icon with the four pages of crapware icons Verizon forced down my throat. F' them, and the $30 a month they want now to use my phone as a hotspot or to tether. (Rant off)...I found this fix...
The post I found sayz to use Root Explorer but I used the freely available ES File Explorer. After installing click Menu, Settings. Check off Root Explorer and Mount File System As Writable. Change Home Directory to /.
Browse to /system/etc/security/ and look for the file otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.zip.bak. (Long press on file, menu pops up) I did this two days ago and no more updates bricking my phone.
Otacert zip rename
Ok I have the HTC THUNDERBOLT I have an older firmware I needed to be on in order to ROOT my phone anyways I noticed my phone was trying to do an update to latest firmware I immidietly removed battery to prevent update. Why? because I guess I was on old firmware wich save me time I didnt have to downgrade. Ok so I root phone successfuly and I notice update again trying to happen. so I do the same I defer it maximum 5 days. Im assuming renaming to OTACERT.ZIP should prevent this CORRECT? Thats what i just did just not. Im looking for a ROM that has the latest firmware newest radio bloatware removed prerooted update disabled and STOCK! I know most roms have this disabled so ill look later into flashing roms but I really like stock although I havent played around with roms ever I might like one better.
If anyone out their knows. If I flash new rom does radio come with it too? Im concerned because if I dont have the latest one i wont really get 4g. If it does change it im sure I can just reload the radio right?
If the phone would have completed update would I have a bricked phone?
Or just unrooted?
If it where to brick what would be some solutions.
I own a Verizon SCH-I535 that had version 4.1.2 and after months of avoiding the Verizon update I stupidly pressed install now instead of later. I did have enough mind to take the battery out before it could reboot but my question is can I still root? And can I still use the 4.1.2 method? I don't want to install any roms just wish to uninstall any bloat apps.
I had a very similar issue some time ago. Check out my thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607252
I went in a few circles, soft bricked my phone, but was able to recover. I think the important thing is to verify if your bootloader has been locked or not; boot into odin/recovery mode and checkout the messages posted in my thread. If the bootloader is not locked yet then you have options. If it is locked, you should probably just reboot the phone and let it do it's thing as the locked bootloader cannot be reverted.
Depends on how important this is to you. My wife got the 4.3 update and loves it, but she is not the type to do any customization. I now have a CM 10 d2vzw and am happy. It I were to do this again, I would probably verify you have an unlocked bootloader and re-flash the complete stock 4.1.2 image as I did. Issue is, you will probably lose a lot of data & settings, but things like pictures, etc. should sitll be there. Once the stock 4.1.2 is there you will want to root and disable updates, or else flash a new rom.
The 4.3 update (and anything after it) locks the bootloader. If that's a big deal to you, then you need to push some custom roms. If not, towelroot works on everything so far, so you'd be able to reroot (pretty hassle free) and do what you want.
Has anyone attempted this? The latest 5.0.1 is no good for me. I wonder if i can just flash 5.0 on top of it with out losing data or experiencing other problems.
i dont know if you are going to experience issues but what you can do is to copy, the data and obb folders, and backup the apps with titanium backup in your sd card.
dowgrade on stock tablet
Since an asnwer still hasnt been posted, Id like to know if it is possible to downgrade from 5.0.1 to 5.0. My tablet has never been rooted and has a locked bootloader, and I would prefer of it were to stay like that. Im thinking something similar to Odin on a GS4

U would have to unlock your boot loader. There are instructions on nvidia's site explaining the process. After looking into this, i think the only way to downgrade requires wiping all data. I think i may just hold out until they release a new update. Fortunately nvidia releases updates fairly quick.
Thanks for the help
Does anybody else have graphic glitches such as green colours appearing purple, and even when I panic and restart it remains even on the boot logo then goes away after a bit (no particular remedy, it just goes). There doesnt seem to be any particular action that makes it do that, it just spazzes out for a bit. Is this a driver glitch or just my particular device?
Im hoping its a driver glitch of sorts and not my device malfunctioning
ok so here is my situation. currently im on stock latest update for this model. i am trying to find the correct stock firmware to download just incase anything goes wrong in the future. What i wanted to do was root the phone even though i wanted the current rom and everything backed up. i dont want to root or modify anything without taking a backup beforehand first. i havent rooted or done phone mods in a while and i have a contract with Verizon for this phone and dont want to brick it or atleast be able to return it to stock before my next phone upgrade incase i have to send it back. im kind of unsure where to start even though i would like to know where i can find the first stock firmware and how to flash it later just incase anything goes wrong. currently i was annoyed by the inability to change the apn settings even to disable ipv6 for the mobile data connection. im not sure it is possible if verizon has it locked and i stay away from ipv6 as much as possible because of privacy concerns so i guess if i cant disable it on the mobile network i will turn mobile data off until it is needed for something i really need while on the go.
here is what i wanted to do:
find a stock firmware file for this model just incase i have to flash to restore all default settings. it doesnt really matter if its updated i would even prefer the original or first one before all the update unless it would be recommended to download the updated one as well.
i was going to root with dr.fone until i heard about magisk because it doesnt modify system boot files or something along the lines of that. the only thing is i would like to know after i root with magisk can it be un rooted without messing up any of the stock files, or interfere with future updates if unrooted?
also i would like TWRP installed as i might want to install custom firmware if possible however if i can i would like to backup the stock recovery before i flash TWRP just incase, unless the custom recovery and everything will be restore with the stock firmware zip that can be flashed above. other than that if i can get this far and get some insight to backup and have things prepared before i dive in to modifying again in hopes i have a backup plan incase anything goes bad.
all help is appreciated and its been a while since i modifying android phones especially for this phone model i been on stock since i had it so im kind of lost in a way since i havent had recent experience for a few years in android modding and rooting in a while. hopefully i can get some feedback as im kind of lost on where to start and dont want to mess up my phone incase i need to get back to everything stock.
waiting for your replies i will get back tomorrow to see if there are any responses. i know this is going to eat up a lot of my time as well and honestly it has been stressing me out even though after i get working on it i should feel better.
Thank You!
