I own a Verizon SCH-I535 that had version 4.1.2 and after months of avoiding the Verizon update I stupidly pressed install now instead of later. I did have enough mind to take the battery out before it could reboot but my question is can I still root? And can I still use the 4.1.2 method? I don't want to install any roms just wish to uninstall any bloat apps.
I had a very similar issue some time ago. Check out my thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607252
I went in a few circles, soft bricked my phone, but was able to recover. I think the important thing is to verify if your bootloader has been locked or not; boot into odin/recovery mode and checkout the messages posted in my thread. If the bootloader is not locked yet then you have options. If it is locked, you should probably just reboot the phone and let it do it's thing as the locked bootloader cannot be reverted.
Depends on how important this is to you. My wife got the 4.3 update and loves it, but she is not the type to do any customization. I now have a CM 10 d2vzw and am happy. It I were to do this again, I would probably verify you have an unlocked bootloader and re-flash the complete stock 4.1.2 image as I did. Issue is, you will probably lose a lot of data & settings, but things like pictures, etc. should sitll be there. Once the stock 4.1.2 is there you will want to root and disable updates, or else flash a new rom.
The 4.3 update (and anything after it) locks the bootloader. If that's a big deal to you, then you need to push some custom roms. If not, towelroot works on everything so far, so you'd be able to reroot (pretty hassle free) and do what you want.

Hi All,
I've got a blue TF300 + dock that I was very happy with (almost) when I was on ICS, with plain stock ROM and root, and browser2ram and ezoverclock.
I stupidly did the OTA update to JB, not realising that ezoverlcock and browser2ram would not work anymore.
I preserved root using OTA rootkeeper, did a wipe from recovery menu, then booted back up, installed my apps using TB and restored root.
I have been trying to persevere with the tablet for a couple of weeks now since the update, but I just cant put up with the laggyness anymore. I am sick of not being able to smoothly browse a website that has rich content, like youtube, without the browser freezing up (yes, I have tried pretty much every browser there is).
What I am wondering (since I dont really want to have to loose the warranty - the device should be usable as it is out of the box) is that if I download and flash the WW update from the Asus site, will it wipe all my system permissions too, and would it possibly make my tablet any less buggy? (Feels like maybe I got a dodgy OTA update, some people are saying it works great on theirs).
I understand that if I flash this update I will loose root.
So my last question is, that if I do that will it loose root, and if so is there any way of getting root on JB yet without unlocking the bootloader?
Cheers in advance guys.
PS. I will unlock and custom ROM if it really is necessary, I am comforable enough doing it, I have unlocked pretty much every smartphone I had, but the tablet does not come with a carrier warranty unfortunately
Can't really answer your main question, but browser2ram still works on JB. Ezoverclock doesn't work because of the new kernel, b2r doesn't tweak the kernel.

Thanks for that Is there a new version or the old one still works?
I'm using the same I used on ICS.

I have same laggyness.
Hi all, Soon to be joining the ranks of happy tf300t owners but I have a couple of questions.
I bought my tf second hand and only afterwards I noticed that It comes rooted and unlocked.
Will this affect my ability to get OTA updates? And will I be okay to use factory restore when I get it to be sure its securely wiped (I softbricked my hannspad once by performing a factory reset after applying a honeycomb ROM, still don't understand why but just want to be sure theres no chance of that happening here.)
If it does affect me is there an easy way I can set the device to a way that I can get OTA? And do factory resets if thats even an issue (I do have some limited flashing experience with my Hannspad).
And lastly are there any must have apps? (Willing to pay) Or even just tweaks etc to make my transforming experience more pleasant?
Running JB 4.1.1
Well if it already unlocked then doing a factory reset will be fine and will not brick anything. But before you do that i would boot into recovery and make sure its twrp 2.2.2.0 and not another twrp version or clockworks.
No you can't get OTA updates since its unlocked but that is not a big deal, just wait for a Dev to add it to there ROM or just get the stock firmware from asus site and flash it yourself.
flashing the updates your self is only slighty more work the the ota ones mate but as its already roote thats makes up for it and the first few apps that come to mind are adaway, titanium back up, bsplayer (for movies) and dolphin browser (with the jet pack add on)
Just so you know, if you are running jb, do not attempt to flash anything ICS, either ROM or recovery. Make sure what you're flashing is designed for jb, otherwise you might brick your tablet.
You can't get ota when unlocked, but Asus is good for posting their Roms on their website shortly after an ota update is released. There are several guides here which tell you different ways you can install them. Its not hard at all.
Finally, if unlocked, you cannot relock.
Hope this helps a little.

I am on stock 4.1.2, VRBMB1. I am rooted, unlocked and with TWRP recovery. I have used Titanium to freeze SDM 1.0.
I am considering going to VRBMF1. I don't know how to safely get there. I also don't know what improvements might come with the OTA to MF1. Should I just hang out with VRBMB1 until the rumored update to 4.3 arrives? I would like to be in the position to return to what I have now (just in case), or be able to move to 4.3 if, and when, it come out. How do I proceed? Thanks
I have the same question... subscribed!
Is there a rooted/unlocked update file, or do I just run the VZ update and use Voodoo rootkeeper to restore root (or Casual unlock again, if needed)? Or dirty-flash one of the rooted/unlocked stock ROMs (and then the firmwares)?
So many ways to get there, just looking for the safest... I figure the VZ update might be best.
So, I finally bit the bullet. I backed up all kinds of things before running, but it seems I didn't need to. I unfroze SDM, and then checked for updates. It downloaded and then rebooted to install. Since CWM was installed, it tried to perform the update, gave a few errors, but I let it go anyway. After the main install was done, CWM asked me if I want to let the updater install a new (stock) recovery - I said no. Then it said that I may have lost root, so do I want CWM to fix it - I said yes. Then I cleared the cache (just in case) and rebooted. The phone booted up, said it completed the upgrade, and then dropped me back into the rooted OS. Pretty cool.
SDM did complain to say that the updated "didn't happen" but the phone shows the new MF1 version, and a few new apps as well. So, obviously, the update happened... and I didn't lose root or recovery. Damn nice...
I wonder if TWRP does the same things (disable the stock recovery and restoring root)...?
EDIT: Reading the TWRP page says that they don't support nor recommend applying a stock ROM update.
Secondly, I found that while my phone was working fine, when I tried to get into recovery, it popped up the unauthorized software error. Meh. I used the Casual rooting tool to reroot, apply the insecure aboot, and then reapply CWM... and I'm back to normal now. Not a big deal, but still more steps than I thought I needed above!
Hi Experts,
I'm trying to load a custom ROM.
I did the useless hting of OTA update of the 4.3
I did this ROM Changing thing long back and I even once bricked my Phone.
I have to go to a local store and get it fixed.
SO I don't want to do that mistake once again.
I have Alliance ROM, and my chances are a lot limited, if my Booklooader is Locked or something.
Can anyone please let me know if anyone found out a way to unlock the bootloader, or we don't have any options other than to go for the 3-4 ROMS that are available??
Thanks a lot for Your help.

Bootloader is not unlocked if you are on the official 4.3 OTA or higher. And most likely no one will ever find a way to unlock it. You are restricted to using one of the safestrap compatible ROMs.
I realized that the 4.3 Bootloader cannot be unlocked.
But when I'm trying to load a ROM, basic things are not working.
My basic doubt is, if anyone upgrades to 4.3, will the most basic 2 features in the phone,
1. making calls and
2. Wifi,
Will they work or not?
I'm confused here.
But my experience with Alliance ROM is the worst.

The dev provided 2 years of support from preorder to early/mid 2014. There aren't many Verizon S3 users left, it is a 2+ year old phone and Samsung has made this phone increasingly more difficult to mod as time passed. Those of us that are able to help, basically help blindly because we don't have locked bootloaders on our phones. Your anger should be directed at Samsung not us.
Now, with any VRUCML1 rom installed using Safestrap you have two options:
1) Flash the VRUCML1 rom, choose stock VRUCML1 kernel, then flash the VRUCML1 kernel modules to enable wifi. VRUCML1 kernel modules are in the Safestrap thread. Failing to flash the kernel modules will leave you with no working wifi.
OR
2) Flash the VRUCML1 rom in Safestrap and choose Safestrap kernel. Then boot into the rom and see if wifi works without flashing kernel modules.
If you took the VRUCNC1 4.3 OTA, you need to do a lot more work because none of the above will enable wifi for you at all. Lastly to answer your question, yes Samsung crippled this phone to the point that users will have no working wifi if they do not flash the kernel modules for their respective OTA BEFORE booting into the rom.
I have an HTC One M9 (Sprint) software version 2.11.651.19 (OPJA2) with Android v5.1
Within the last couple months I unlocked the devices bootloader, and rooted it. Last night I left the phone under my laptop and I'm thinking it got way way way too hot, somehow the thing is still alive, however when I went to turn it on in the morning, I had no wifi or cellular capabilities. At first I assumed this was a hardware issue, however I then unrooted the device on a whim, and this fixed it (Until I turned it off again, to my dismay).
I'm thinking somehow my phone overheated (Which explains why my battery life won't go over 47%) and somehow my flash memory must have been corrupted because I can no longer boot into recovery mode, which is my serious catch 22. Since I figure this is some issue related to my firmware, which I would LIKE to reflash (This is my goal here). To my dismay, in order to flash a stock RUU or firmware to the device, you must have your bootloader relocked. However in order to relock your bootloader you must have root, and like an idiot I unrooted it. I can't reinstall SuperSU through my TWRP recovery because my phone refuses to boot into recovery mode. I attempted to re-flash TWRP to the device through download mode, the flashing is completed successfully, however I still cannot boot into my recovery. To break it down simply:
-Want to reflash stock firmware
-Must have root to reflash stock firmware/RUU
-Don't have root because I uninstalled it
-Can't re-root because my recovery is corrupted
-Can't re-flash TWRP (Already tried and it's not working)
-Can't re-root because I can't flash TWRP
-Can't reflash stock firmware because I can't disable it with root
Regardless of this I attempted to use adb and echo to relock the bootloader however instead of getting # I get $, so I'm not really able to do this either. Is there ANY way I can repair my recovery, has anyone ever run into an issue like this before? Or am I just completely screwed, hahaha.
Do you think I might be able to reflash Android V5.1 to try and fix the corruption and then maybe that would allow me to get into recovery mode so I can flash Super SU so I can at least factory reset my device with TWRP, or possible reload stock firmware and factory reset from there?
Thanks guys for any help you can provide.
*EDIT
If anyone wants to provide any advice great, but for now I'm going to try using HTC Sync Manager to load Marshmallow (v6.0) onto the HTC and see if this may allow me to actually get into recovery mode. Downloading the file from here: *nevermind can't post links yet, under 10 posts, you can find it on HTC's website* (This is for the HTC One M9, Sprint) in case anyone else EVER has to run into this awful issue, lol.
Moderators please feel free to update the thread to SOLVED status, I was able to update my phone to marshmallow to resolve the issue. This time around I WILL be backing up my phone, probably not going to root it this time around either, I have like 3 other phones so I'll just root them instead, lol. If you would like the download link I am happy to provide it VIA PM so you can update my OP with the link for the full fix. My phone is able to get wifi and texts now without an issue, unfortunately all my data is wiped but honestly I don't really care!!
Thanks everyone!
Good job on solving your issue.
