Hi all, Soon to be joining the ranks of happy tf300t owners but I have a couple of questions.
I bought my tf second hand and only afterwards I noticed that It comes rooted and unlocked.
Will this affect my ability to get OTA updates? And will I be okay to use factory restore when I get it to be sure its securely wiped (I softbricked my hannspad once by performing a factory reset after applying a honeycomb ROM, still don't understand why but just want to be sure theres no chance of that happening here.)
If it does affect me is there an easy way I can set the device to a way that I can get OTA? And do factory resets if thats even an issue (I do have some limited flashing experience with my Hannspad).
And lastly are there any must have apps? (Willing to pay) Or even just tweaks etc to make my transforming experience more pleasant?

Well if it already unlocked then doing a factory reset will be fine and will not brick anything. But before you do that i would boot into recovery and make sure its twrp 2.2.2.0 and not another twrp version or clockworks.
No you can't get OTA updates since its unlocked but that is not a big deal, just wait for a Dev to add it to there ROM or just get the stock firmware from asus site and flash it yourself.
flashing the updates your self is only slighty more work the the ota ones mate but as its already roote thats makes up for it and the first few apps that come to mind are adaway, titanium back up, bsplayer (for movies) and dolphin browser (with the jet pack add on)
Just so you know, if you are running jb, do not attempt to flash anything ICS, either ROM or recovery. Make sure what you're flashing is designed for jb, otherwise you might brick your tablet.
You can't get ota when unlocked, but Asus is good for posting their Roms on their website shortly after an ota update is released. There are several guides here which tell you different ways you can install them. Its not hard at all.
Finally, if unlocked, you cannot relock.

Hi all, I just have a small handful of questions before I proceed on a venture of mine.
I've got a TF300T I bought about a month ago and I love it. I've spent time customizing it and pimping it out, and its great. My only issue is I -really- miss some of the features that come on the stock ASUS Rom, like the Swype keyboard, SuperNote, and the Polaris Office suite, to name a few. At the moment I've got the tablet rooted and unlocked running CM9 and I think its off of the .29 firmware, but I'm not sure. That being said, I've got a few questions:
1) Is there any way to port those specific features that I want from the stock ROM to CM9? So that would be the Swype keyboard, PolarisOffice, SuperNote, and a few others like the Asus weather app widget, and some of the other asus-specific widgets.
2) I know restoring a backup breaks the wi-fi, and I was given a fix (Flash the stock ROM over the current install without wiping out) but before I do that, which ROM would I use? I was at .29 when I rooted it a few weeks ago and I download the .30 Stock ROM from Asus' website today, but don't want to flash the wrong one and break compatibility or do anything like that.
3) I read somewhere that flashing the stock ROM would overwrite my recovery manager. If that is the case, would I lose the backups I've done with the recovery manager? (Clockwork Recovery Mod) Is there a way I can make a copy of my backups, then have those in case I lose them through the flashing of ROMS?
4) Since I won't receive OTA updates with unlocking it and whatnot, is it OK for me to go ahead and flash the .30 ROM from Asus' website that has the latest updates and what not? Or is there another resource I can access that has rooted versions of the .30 for my enjoyment? (I hope to install CM10 as soon as it becomes available!!)

1.) You can try downloading the rebloat zip from Seanzscreams' thread and installing the apps like that. I think Polaris and SuperNote should work fine. The Asus stuff, I'm not sure about.
2.) The one from the Asus site should be the right one. Just make sure you get the one for the correct region (actually, I don't think the region matters a whole lot if you aren't expecting OTAs).
3.) You won't lose the backups because you lose recovery. You will lose the backups because the stock ROM will wipe the internal storage. The best thing to do is just copy and paste the entire contents of /sdcard to a normal computer hard drive, then when you have stock flashed, just copy and paste it back.
4.) Getting the ROMs from Asus is perfectly fine. There are also a couple stock-based ROMs at various levels of "stockness" in the development section. However, in order to flash them correctly, you need to be on the stock Asus ROM anyway. So go ahead and flash the Asus ROM. You'll need to anyway.
Thanks for your response. I guess I didn't clarify my question about backing up programs. So, I read somewhere that you can buy a paid program, and within 15 minutes cancel that payment and not be charged. Within that 15 minutes, you can just backup the .apk file and have a paid program for free. Based on this logic, my question should have been stated Is there a similar way to backup the specific .apk files for the programs I want, such as SuperNote, Polaris Office, etc, or will those programs be searching for the specific version of the Stock ROM and not run unless the ROM is an Asus ROM?

I've got a blue TF300 + dock that I was very happy with (almost) when I was on ICS, with plain stock ROM and root, and browser2ram and ezoverclock.
I stupidly did the OTA update to JB, not realising that ezoverlcock and browser2ram would not work anymore.
I preserved root using OTA rootkeeper, did a wipe from recovery menu, then booted back up, installed my apps using TB and restored root.
I have been trying to persevere with the tablet for a couple of weeks now since the update, but I just cant put up with the laggyness anymore. I am sick of not being able to smoothly browse a website that has rich content, like youtube, without the browser freezing up (yes, I have tried pretty much every browser there is).
What I am wondering (since I dont really want to have to loose the warranty - the device should be usable as it is out of the box) is that if I download and flash the WW update from the Asus site, will it wipe all my system permissions too, and would it possibly make my tablet any less buggy? (Feels like maybe I got a dodgy OTA update, some people are saying it works great on theirs).
I understand that if I flash this update I will loose root.
So my last question is, that if I do that will it loose root, and if so is there any way of getting root on JB yet without unlocking the bootloader?

Can't really answer your main question, but browser2ram still works on JB. Ezoverclock doesn't work because of the new kernel, b2r doesn't tweak the kernel.

I have same laggyness.
I've gone through the root process on a dozen phones and tablets, but this is the first time I've gone through the process on a new device (to me) so long after its release, and therefore I'm finding the information I need to be a little... hard to pin down. I'm really just trying to be extra cautious with this one since I need it next week.
What I have: Android 4.0.3 ICS, ASUS Build v9.4.3.26
What I want: Android 4.1.? JB, ASUS Build v10.4.2.?? w/ Root/Recovery/Etc
With the above outdated firmware, I'm not sure if I should upgrade to Jellybean using ASUS OTA updates and then root/flash, or if I should use an older root method and upgrade to Jellybean by flashing a custom ROM, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
Edit: I should note that I was planning to follow this thread, but it was written under the assumption your tablet is already rooted with a custom recovery.

This is how I did it this afternoon on my new TF300T:

Updated su binary using supersu
Installed OTA rootkeeper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
Backed up su with OTA rootkeeper
Installed ES File Explorer(you really don't have to do this but I wanted to make sure some other app had root access before I upgraded to JB)
Made sure supersu authorized all these root apps by running them at least once.
Upgraded to Jelly Bean
Restored root access with OTA rootkeeper
Wiped the sweat from my brow afterwards!
I am staying with stock JB locked to keep getting OTA updates. If you want a custom rom, you need to unlock:

Alright, thanks for the help in getting started, but I forgot to mention I had unlocked the tablet beforehand as a first step to another guide, so OTA updates were a no-go for me with this approach. What I ended up doing was, after performing 1-7 from your list, install TWRP using fastboot, manually install the JB update from ASUS, install TWRP for JB (again w/ fastboot), and then load a custom ROM. I'm all up to date and running fine, and had I intended to stay on the stock ROM I could have just left it at that when I flashed the ASUS firmware.

I own a Verizon SCH-I535 that had version 4.1.2 and after months of avoiding the Verizon update I stupidly pressed install now instead of later. I did have enough mind to take the battery out before it could reboot but my question is can I still root? And can I still use the 4.1.2 method? I don't want to install any roms just wish to uninstall any bloat apps.

I went in a few circles, soft bricked my phone, but was able to recover. I think the important thing is to verify if your bootloader has been locked or not; boot into odin/recovery mode and checkout the messages posted in my thread. If the bootloader is not locked yet then you have options. If it is locked, you should probably just reboot the phone and let it do it's thing as the locked bootloader cannot be reverted.
Depends on how important this is to you. My wife got the 4.3 update and loves it, but she is not the type to do any customization. I now have a CM 10 d2vzw and am happy. It I were to do this again, I would probably verify you have an unlocked bootloader and re-flash the complete stock 4.1.2 image as I did. Issue is, you will probably lose a lot of data & settings, but things like pictures, etc. should sitll be there. Once the stock 4.1.2 is there you will want to root and disable updates, or else flash a new rom.
The 4.3 update (and anything after it) locks the bootloader. If that's a big deal to you, then you need to push some custom roms. If not, towelroot works on everything so far, so you'd be able to reroot (pretty hassle free) and do what you want.

I just bought a used ASUS TF101A with KB dock off EBay to replace mine that suffered a premature death in a flood. I was running (poorly) the last version of ICS, 4.03 If I recall. This one was advertised as "Excellent" and it is very clean but stinking of cigarette smoke, except that the jerk EBay seller failed to mention that was Rooted and running KatKiss 4.4.4 which I hate, the desktop is essentially blank, there are like 6 apps in the library and no Google Play access.
While I do want to install a "Factory Image" of KitKat 4.4.4 as if it was a OTA install, I want to get this awful KatKiss off, even it it means going back to a restored last version of ICS so I can even use this TF101, which it is completely useless in this state with katKiss.
Not being familiar at all with Rooting and Flashing, can someone please help and direct me on how to:
1 - Remove KatKiss and restore it to at least a full Factory install of ICS with all the original apps, Play access ... well like it wold have been.
2 - OR preferably, install a "street" Factory Image of normal KitKat 4.4.4 - Is that possible at all?

1. If you un-install KatKiss it will be a huge mistake. There is no better rom for the tf101 than it except for the 5.1.0 version. If you follow the direction word for word from the OP it can't be beat. Tim is also one of the nicest and most helpful devs that I know.
2. No, it's not possible.
There is no "Factory Image" of KitKat 4.4.4. the latest ASUS update was Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Android 4.0.3.
My opinion is that the KatKiss ROM KitKat 4.4.4 is the best you can install on your TF-101:

A clean install will most likely fix any concerns you may have on this ROM.
If you really want to downgrade to ICS, the easiest way will be to use Easy Flasher:

You will need to install the APX Drivers:

TF101 will need to be put into APX mode:
With the device off, hold down the volume up key and the power button at the same time for ~10-15 seconds. It will look like nothing happened but when you connect the cable from your TF101 to computer USB port the APX drivers will get recognized.
You really need to do some reading on the XDA forums before attempting to install anything on your TF101.
