ART - What is it? Is dalvik VM still better ?
OK guys - here we go!!! Over the past 24 hours I have switched over to 4.4 and discovered Google's new solution to making the most out of our hardware. Now - please let me be clear from the outset, I am certainly not a dev, technical whiz, nor even someone who understands coding nor microchips! I am simply an enthusiastic Android geek who loves to mess around with the latest optimizations and offerings bestowed upon us by our ever hard working devs.
My interest in starting this thread is to give a forum for discussion around the pros and cons of Android Run Time (ART) and dalvik VM and in so doing become a place where information can be shared and a knowledge base that can be built upon. I come to posting this after the dev of the new omnirom 4.4 @nims11 (i9100) posted that ART was working on his ROM. I asked the question 'so what does ART do and what benefits does it give?' to which he suggested I google it! Once I got off my lazy arse and started searching I discovered that there are many posts that relate to this subject however they are all in device specific forums - obviously, this topic is far bigger than just Nexus 4 or 5! Thus this general forum for all Android users who have (or are thinking of) upgrading to 4.4
Introduction
My limited understand of what ART does is this: ART compiles the code of all our apks into a near native code which makes it more economical for our Android to read and execute in run time - which means that apps and operations should load quicker, be more battery efficient and generally perform better. Like I said this is a simplistic description and there are much more detailed explanations in the threads I have linked below:
Here's some useful information - this list will be added to as and when new info becomes available:
Wiki description of dalvik VM
What is ART? Android Police

Find out about which apps can run in ART (Android Run Time), the easy way @bippi79
ART Broken apps androidruntime.com
Top tip: use PA 4.4 gapps as they are compatible with ART thanks @herna
Now - this I believe is just a start and I feel there is lots more information but this is some of the resources I found useful to help me to get a basic understanding.
Summary
I've been running on ART for a week now and can report that for me ART seems to be running very nicely. I have tried swapping between dalvik and ART and am certain there is a perceptible difference in the speed that apps load and operate, don't get me wrong - I think KitKat in general seems fast and smooth, although ART seems to just give it a little edge - it seems more instant. I'm not sure how much of this is placebo but what I am sure of is that Google has invested much time and resources into developing this new run time and I can't for the life of me see how it has got this far without the intention that this is the future of Android.
The only problems I have had is that Titanium Backup still will not run on ART - however it will run on dalvik so my simple workaround is to swap to dalvik - restore or back up with TB then switch back to ART - not pretty but it works : EDIT: TB now works with ART. The other problem is that the xposed framework @rovo89 is running on 4.4 with dalvik but unfortunately not with ART. @rovo89 says the framework will likely need to be completely re-written to run on ART, I hope he can (well I'm sure he can but hope he does) rewrite so we can have his excellent framework and all modules that run from it working on ART
Rules of this forum are very simple:

Be nice ! This is supposed to be a helpful forum for people to learn, if someone asks a question that has already been answered please just direct them to the right place.
Share your experiences pro and con for both using dalvik and ART
Please post any articles and resources and I will copy and paste them into the OP as I have time
Ask questions - but search before you do - there is no such thing as a stupid question unless it has already been answered umpteen times before!

So - I'll kick us off with sharing my limited (so far) experience with ART. Well, it works on ominrom 4.4 and the way I changed over was quite simple:
From TWRP run GS2RomNuke @hawkerpaul
Flash latest omnirom 4.4 @nims11
Flash latest PA Gapps
Reboot ROM
Settings/about phone/press the build number 7 times
Developer options/select runtime/ART
Reboot (it takes far longer than normal so be patient)
Voila - for me I had zero fc's on first boot, consequently I have had minimal fc's that I have either uninstalled the troublesome apps or the fc's just seem to stop on their own
I have been running on ART and rebooted a couple of times today and the boot time hasn't been significantly affected since the initial boot. My phone seems snappy - however it did when I first ran 4.4 but I'm used to having a super responsive phone running SlimSaber @fusionjack powered by dori 9.43xx maliv3 - that being said I think things do seem to be running quicker and my phone seems to be 'ultra resopsive' now, although I am cautious of being taken in by placebo! Also, phones usually run very well when clean install of new ROM so we will have to wait and see how this settles in.
Battery - I've been noticing significant drain in comparison to my old set up on 4.3.1 however omnirom is very much in alpha so this may far more to the ROM/kernel needing to be optimized rather than anything to do with running ART.
The only issues I have noticed is of course 'Titanium' fc's as soon as I try to open it, I also use 'overlaylauncher' to give me the option to have a pseudo ribbon with gesture capabilities - it works, however when I try to set it to do system lock (using root option) it doesn't work although asks for root permission (it did work last night when I was running omnirom on dalvik.
Thats it for now - I'm really interested in hearing your experiences thus far :good:
There is a list of apps that work/don't with ART here. You can filter by Not working.

ART is still in its 'experimental' phase, presumably to give devs and us mere mortal end users the chance to mess around with it and see what works and what doesn't in order to iron out all incompatibility issues for google to roll out it's new solution to compiling code for our user apk's to run on. I have been using google search with ART enabled and it has given some fc's but not unusable. Personally I choose to completely uninstall it at the moment as their are other browser I can use that meet my needs better - and they don't FC - I use 'Maxthon'.
This is probably a very limited understanding of the technicalities and please - if anyone (devs) can explain this better, then please do
EDIT: Just checked and google search is also FC'ing running on dalvik

Interesting, I never had FC's on dalvik. When I switched on ART I got FC's of Google Search, Google Home, Gmail, and other Google apps. They made a new engine, but teir own apps crashed on it.
It looks funny at least for me

I can confirm that for me it is working very well, feels much snappier and am currently experiencing no fc's - I noly use the PA gapps mini modular and then uninstall all the google c**p that I don't use (I use nobloat from play:good

That is because your Gapps are not ART compatible. If you flash latest PA Gapps full zip you will have Gapps working with ART.

I've been thinking about that. Now I am downloading full pa gapps and I'll try to use them.

Running art since 27 build of infected omni...
... and the phone is smooth. No bigger speed gain, but, no FCs too.
Running latest OmniRom by @nims11 and @infected_ and in ART mode, and everything works like a charm
on omni rom i can see a big boost on booting up with ART

We should be grateful its just a dong. That's a downright tame hack these days.
ART?
From what I know, ART really compiles the apks that you download into native code for best-running. But it happens when you're intalling the apps from Google Play, so the apps take a long time to install.
Well, I have not the Android 4.4 because there is not a 4.4 ROM for my phone and it will not have an upgrade
ART' users, is it true that with ART the apps take a long time to install?
I've noticed some extra time taken during installs (mostly anecdotal), but it worth it, apps seem to boot faster and I haven't had any problems yet.

I've never really looked into ART that much..
I may experiment with it and post back here.
For me, it's a placebo. No really changes on my galaxy nexus.

Now, I have read this thread and a couple of others so I have a very basic understanding of ART and Dalvik. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536979). I see a lot of people using ART though, and I am wondering whether or not I should use it? The biggest thing I see is users asking whether or not a certain app/mod is compatible with ART. Is this a big issue with ART and custom apps/mods? Also, if I select ART, will my apps automatically begin "converting" to ART?
Any other information would be helpful as well. Don't need info about what the two are, mainly info on if I switched to ART, stayed on dalvik, or wanted to try ART but wanted to go back to Dalvik (such as any problems I'd face?).
Thanks!
You can switch to ART and when you do the phone will reboot and the apps will start to upgrade when you boot. Some apps are not compatible with ART as its still a work in process but the speeds on ART are impressive. You can always switch back to Dalvik and the phone will reboot again upgrading the apps back to dalvik
You can try it if you like. I don't see a noticeable difference. I haven't had issues with apps. It'll take awhile to boot the first time so let it do it's thing. You can always go back
I switched back to Dvalik after using ART for a couple of weeks to see the difference. It's definitely noticeable that ART is faster!

Why aren't some apps compatible with ART? It seems like most everything should go smoothly, if it's just compiling the apps beforehand, right?

Most of them are compatible. I'm on Dalvik because Xposed.
Hi, I have been using the CPU Monitor app to track my phone's health. Lately, I have been getting Good status. But recently, I get the Warning status.
According to the CPU Monitor, it is due to the CPU Usage and the space left on the SD card. My questions are is it possible to turn off background apps permantally? I have been using Greenify from Exposed, but every time I reboot. The apps I have hibernated.. Are no longer hibernated.
Also regarding the Clean Master app, when I free RAM. The apps I have selected not to free, must be reselected after reboot.
I just want to have certain apps to not run in the background. Also, is there a way to have CPU Monitor delete the history of my previous scans? Thank you in advance!

Don't use ram free.
use xposed framework and the boot manager to stop apps at from starting at boot.
To turn off apps permanently to have to freeze them or uninstall
Thank you, I will use boot manager, should I remove clean master app?

Personally I don't use it. I don't understand why it needs to run in the background. To kill app? I don't think so, Android does not need it. I use SD Maid.
Sigh. Using task managers on Android with devices that have more than 512 mb RAM is useless, and slows your phone down...

My response had a bit of a know-it-all tone over it, sorry . But yeah, task managers aren't a very good thing to use.
Battery saving apps don't do any harm and if they have special power saving profiles(screen brightness low, signals off, GPS etc.), sure, use them if you want!
Hope that helps

Since I am running franco.kernel with VomerTweaks now. The battery life is pretty good so far. I am running tasker with VomerTweaks.
Tasker is a bit complex because I get confused and overwhelmed easy. I am still learning and have a positive outlook on this Android device. However, lately it has been running slow. (when I run a game in landscape mode, it shifts the home screen to landscape then launches the game. Before, it would just launch. Also, some apps are glitchy now, and it wasn't like that before. (When I open an app, it shows a transparency of the app with the home screen as the background) and would have to re-launch to fix.
This all happened when I applied the VomerTweaks. I haven't done too much research on the VomerTweaks, but I hear everyone is saying it works great. I am having a different experience.
Also, the camera has been hot due to movie watching... but hasn't been doing this when I had battery doctor installed. I will install CPU monitor when I get back home to see what's up. I apologize if what I type is very choppy and unorganized.
My question is if I install VomerTweaks and Battery Doctor, will it conflict and change the system settings and confuse the Android device?
Thank you again.
Install the FKU app from Franco or per app settings then you can change the frequencies for individual apps. All my games I've put at stock settings with Vomer some games experience lag due to the low frequency of CPU and GPU with per app I've got them all on stock and they run just fine. I've even lowered the CPU on non CPU taxing apps like tapatalk for example.

My recommendation to you is to keep things simple. I have many apps, but I still always have around 1.7GBs of free RAM on average. I have my OPO overclocked to 2.880GHz and the battery still lasts me the entire day with a lot to spare. With time you'll learn to tweak the kernel and weed out and replace inefficient apps to keep the OPO at an optimal state. I now longer use memory or battery "management" apps, they just do more harm, and I find it absurd that a device such as this should get bogged down to such degree.
I just came from reading the "[Q] Wrong kernel : black screen, no fastboot, no adb, no factory reset" thread.
It was heart wrenching to read but as I got closer the page 14, there was light at the tunnel. This community is too awesome.
Anyways, I do not want to ever experience a hard bricked device, that would just destroy me. However, I do love tweaking my phone so that it runs with the least hiccups as possible.
So seeing the lags after installing the VomerTweak bothers me a little. I will keep an open mind and when the develop updates it, I will definately try it again. My question is there a way to uninstall VomerTweaks after flashing the zip file. Or is there a way to make it better with franco.kernel? If so, how? Thank you again.
P.S: I don't know why, but my gut tells me I should not uninstall the VomerTweak, I do not know why... Just a FYI. lol

How do you overclock your OPO to 2.880GHz? I watch 720p / 1080p Youtube videos for 3 hours using MX Player app and I play 20 minutes of Anomaly my battery life is 15% from a full charge. Also, OPO gets really hot after I play 20 minutes of Anomaly. I'm not sure if this is normal. Also, whenever I set my MX player app to play the Youtube videos in the background, I always have to wait 20~30 secs before it skips the next video. This would happen even before I flashed the VomerTweaks.
Thank you I am aware that the memory and battery apps do more harm. I uninstalled it too. Instead I use Greenify, CM Security, SD Maid, Boot Manager, BusyBox Free, Tasker with VomerTweaks, and Xposed Installer using Nova Launcher. I will post pictures on what's on my home screen.
This is a widget called Animated Photo Frame Widget+, also I blocked out the contacts I have.
The widget is called PowerAmp
This widget is called Weather & Clock Widget
This widget is called DigiCal.
This widget is Animated Photo Frame Widget+ again, but this one changes pictures every 20 secs. Again, I blacked out the contacts I have.
The background I am using is called Wave. I use Bluelight Filter so I don't get blind during the night.
Just a FYI, I bought and supported all the developers who created these apps and widgets. Also, there were no lags before I removed the Clean Master and Battery Doctor, it was only after I installed VomerTweaks.

We'll I'm just running a fully updated rooted stock ROM. I'm using AK kernel which is my favorite one for this device, and I use the Synapse kernel app that the dev tells you to use, I think that your will be impressed with allnthe things that app can do, thought I'm not sure it works with other kernels besides AK. You can't overclock on Franco's kernel but you can with AK. 2.880GHz is as high as it goes, and its safe and stable in my opinion. I've bought four OPO's already and its worked without issue on all of them.

Hello all,
I have installed lollipop when it came out, I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. Then I reinstalled a bunch of apps I use (games, apps, utilities) - all from scratch to make sure that old setting and such do not interfere.
All seems to be fine (smooth, fast) - only some apps do not seem to work - however, in some cases (when for example opening Chrome) I see huge slowdowns...
Anyone else experienced this? How do I find out what is causing it? How do I fix it?
Thank you for any suggestions
Un-install Facebook. I was about to revert to Kit Kat, but I figured I would wipe and re-install. I noticed slowdown when I installed Facebook, so I nuked it and my tablet is butter smooth now.
The Facebook app destroyed lollipop performance on my Nexus 7 too. This is not a Shield issue, it's a Facebook/lollipop issue.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet using XDA Free mobile app
Wow. I had facebook installed but not even logged into, and i saw dramatic reduction in stutters and pauses when i uninstalled it.. how facebook, how?!
Thank you all. I do not use facebook. Any other possible reasons?
Applications I have installed are foldermount, adaway, titanium backup .... Could those cause this?
I also don't have Facebook installed and get some hang ups, especially when a system animation is about to occur (opening an app, going home, etc).
I'm rooted as well, with foldermount, adaway, ultimate backup (jrummys titanium), and a slew of other games and stuff. I didn't really think it would be an app issue. But maybe. I'll get rid of a few apps I have on my phone and see if I notice a difference.

Thank you. I tried that - and it makes no difference. And the problem is not just with Chrome, as I experience (more or less random) slowdowns elsewhere too. I am a bit disappointed with this whole new Lollipop experience. On one hand it is (much) smoother than Kitkat was, on the other hand I get slowdowns, incompatibilities etc. which I never experienced with Kitkat
Well I have LTE version, i am rooted with philz recovery locked bootloader and orginal kernel, i use Seeder (find it on playstore) and weekly clear cache and dalvic/art cache, have no lags and slowdowns on lollipop, if there are, they are so rare that i dont notice any more.
Did you factory rest after the update? Cause i read somewhere that already installed apps have issues with lollipop so fresh install is recommended, i also have no issues with facebook either...
And also did you try changing processor mode to max performance in Shield power control under battery menu from optimized.
I must also mention the battery times have improved alot compared to kitkat...

Thanks, I'll have to try with a re-format.
Tablet is stock, not rooted and boorloader locked. I sideloaded the lollipop OTA on my LTE version and i experience the same issue.
It flies most of the time but sometime, especially when downloading or updating apps from Play store or opening random apps like Skype or even hangouts the tablet will come to a crawl.
I think this is a lollipop issue which nvidia need to address with an update.
I have to say on 4.x the tablet was unbearably slow at times and it didnt seem to be related to any specific app. After installing lollipop fresh and clean everything is really smooth, except Chrome. When i open Chrome and start navigating i see things slow down to being unresponsive for 30-60 seconds at a time and immediately working if i close Chrome. I also have a Nexus 5 with Lollipop and no such issues there. I did install facebook so ill try removing that. Ill give the optimization thread a peak too and see if that works.
Im impressed overall with the Shield tablet, but its a blemish that general web browsing is faster on CM11 on my Kindle Fire HD (original). Maybe Nvidia will come out with a fix, or someone here will pin point the exact cause.

I have to say on 4.x the tablet was unbearably slow at times and it didnt seem to be related to any specific app. After installing lollipop fresh and clean everything is really smooth, except Chrome. For me, web browsing in general has been a pain, many browsers don't seem to work well on our hardware. They all feel somewhat sluggish. And flash has been very picky for me... I think it is finally dying, haha.
Get rid of Facebook if you have it and try this for chrome

Lastpass?
Do you happen to use LastPass? I found that, upon a fresh install, everything worked great until I installed LastPass. The way that they set up autofill in lollipop seems to hang up the whole system. When I disabled "Enable fill service" in the settings, the tablet was blazing fast again.
After playing with it, I found that I still got decent performance while still being able to leverage the best part of the app by enabling the fill service and disabling the helper and scanning for password fields.
A little app called cache cleaner can do wonders? and a simple reboot also helps a lot.
Btw. im using Yandex Browser for now untill BoatHD gets the lollipop update and it works really well on the Shield with 5.0
Hey guys
i need some tips or feedbacks. So ive been with the Galaxy since the S3, and each one ends up becoming the same. They are great when i first get them, then within the first 2 months, they pretty much turn into crap. The UI isnt smooth, things take a while to open, apps dont transition to another smoothly, opening texts,, going back and forth between texts and apps arent the best and i constantly get problems to the point i need to do a warranty exchange with tmobile.
Do you guys experience the same or are you phones super fast and fluid? Even with a rooted phone i experience the same. Whenever i test out my friends iphone, everything seems to be super quick and fluid, just not customizable and limited to what you can do
What can i do to improve my phone or this is just how these galaxies are?
Thanks!
Hiya
I find it's good to reboot every so often, and I also use the built in Smart Manager to Clean All, and I don't experience any lag.
I do run my phone pretty clean though and don't have a million useless Apps which does tend to slow it down.
Reboot and use the smart manager from time to time and you should be good to go. I also find that using Package Disabler, Nova Launcher and Anti virus Apps SLOW DOWN my phone and make it buggy and laggy.
I have now wiped it and left it fully stock and it multi tasks properly and is super quick.

Thanks for your response. i already do all that. I use clean master everyday to clear my phone of cache and boost it so all background running apps are closed. when rooted, i deleted all useless apps and bloatware. i do restart my phone but still, i face these problems. its just frustrating when using an iphone because everything is so fast! i just want to fix up my android to be the same but it always turns to ****. im now facing a problem where outgoing texts stays stuck on sending and doesnt go through so now i have to use a third party messaging app.

Seriously, cleanmaster?? Delete immediately! If you're rooted, why don't you freeze the bloats? Use amplify and greenify combo! Can't believe a rooted user uses cleanmaster
Clearing cache every time is not good and results in stutters as cache is meant to make loading times faster and usually only cleaned if there are signs of corruption!
Your description looks suspicious

lol i didnt know about that for cleanmaster, im new to the whole rooting thing so i didnt know. i already freeze the bloats using titanium backup. also, i had to update my phone because my call quality was all messed up. i updated my phone to baseband version DOJC. upon doing that, my phone is no longer rooted. where are the best places to go to download new files in order to root my phone again. i dont want to use my old files and risk messing up my phone.
Thanks

So if you're no longer rooted, you can't use titanium backup. No need to root the S6 as you won't be able to update and rooting without using custom roms isn't that great.
Use package disabler pro! It's enough. Put apps to always optimize in battery settings. Use a custom launcher like Apex or Nova. Update everything. Clear cache in storage menu and reboot. You should be good.
Try leaving at least 1GB out of your internal memory free, although its impact is not proved!

no, i meant i used titanium backup when i was rooted. im no longer rooted because i had to update my phone in order to fix some problems i was having. When i was rooted, i used a custom rom, twisted sixx version 3. i want to reroot my phone again, but i want to know if i need to download new files again to root if what i used last time is ok. last time i rooted was in septempber so my files are from that time frame. If not ok, where can i go to get the new files i need to root again? also with your phone, is everything usually fast and fluid or do you come across the problems i mention earlier as well?
thanks

Sorry can't help with newer root methods!
I'm completely stock and using package disabler pro and app optimizer. It's not buttery smooth like a Nexus or Motorola, but it still is a fast experience, i.e, rarely any scrolling stutters. Try putting animations to 0.5x or 0/off.

ok cool. i just installed it, looks to be the same like the titanium backup where i can disable freeze all the random apps. any idea why my texts are stuck on sending? dont really want to do a system wipe to see if that fixes it
thanks for you help!

Np! Try defrosting some packages that as per your guess might be linked to the sms system.
Try sending through a 3rd party app like Google messaging app on play store and see if it works.

Search 'safe to debloate guides' in S6 general and q&a forums and Note 5 forums as well.

Or he could use Kernel Adiutor and set Androids build in kill scheduler to free ram
Sent from my LG-LS740 using XDA Free mobile app
My little tips :
First. Speed up your android device by *not* installing any speed booster app.
2. Android is smart enough to force close background services when more ram is needed. And restart them when ram hungry process (e.g heavy game) ends. Do some research, it's a very very bad idea to manually kill background apps and services. Doing so will just decrease both your performance and battery.
3.Stock Samsung provided applications gives better performance and battery life. They also use ram more efficiently. try using stock launcher, stock keyboard, stock E-mail app, etc.
Also every other launcher that uses vertical scrolling will have lags. (Apex,Action,Nova and even Google Now Launcher)
4. Manually clearing cache is also bad idea. Imagine you put your charger on your desk to quickly access it when needed (cache), then someone puts it back to drawer every time :| (Clearing catche)

Thanks for the tips. i already use stock email, stock interenet stock everything. My battery dies extremely quick with minimal use, as oppose to when i had it rooted, which was significantly better. with minimal use today, its been off the charger for 5 hours and im already at 50%. i also dont force close. i just click that menu button and press close all when nothings being used, or are you saying thats not good to do?
i have mine for 10 months, and i don't regret it at all, i had a galaxy S2 and S4 before and i always said i won't get another samsung because of the lag, but this time i made the right choice...the phone flies through everything, loading apps takes no time, opening apps really fast, the truth is this is the first galaxy that didn't lag after a couple of months, at least not for me, there are sometimes some frame drops, but in general it's really fast, i use stock apps, i restart my phone about every week, the battery isn't that good, 3-4 SOT...so not bad but not that good, because this is a phone you wanna keep using all the time and then suddenly the battery die.....the truth is if i had the money now i would get the NOTE5/ S6 EDGE PLUS...because of the battery and big screen, other than that it's perfect....best screen, camera, the new TW is really good....
