So, i opened this therad because there no persons pushing and Developing custom AOSP Roms for the Galaxy Tab 3.
I'm opening it here because the Android Developing forum is a bit AFK.
Also, my first question is,
Why we are not using the Android x86 source, put a little bit from samsung open source and Tab 3 binaries it, and compile it?
Its so hard?
We are the xda-developers, we can do it!
Curious..

Yes, I'm asking myself the same, the Galaxy Tab 3 is such a famous device and out since July, but still there are nearly no ROMs out. Are there any ROMs planned or will this device soon be moved to the low activity section? CyanogenMod officially supported the Galaxy tab and the galaxy tab 2, but it doesn't seem like they are planning to support the galaxy tab 3?
Is there a special reason for that?, I'm just wondering?

The most device development I've done to date has been a simple android app, but I'm willing to get dirty on this one. I just came into possession of one of these devices over xmas, and I never let a good device go to waste. I do have 17 years of programming experience in multiple languages including C++ and Java, and a lot of web-based languages, so I'm hoping to come up to speed relatively quickly.
I'll poke around here and on the net over the next few days and see if I can teach myself, but if someone could point me in the direction of some quick start tutorials for building custom roms, I'll get started.

Anthony, I think one thing that is holding people back on this device is a good recovery. The ones available now are painfully slow. I'm guessing there is some power saving mode on the x86 chip that needs to be tweaked to get it performing well. Once that was fixed, it would be a lot easier to experiment with ROMs. -- Bud

Anthony and all, hi and hello. Thinking of shaking the rust off, as I also just came into possession of a GTab3, 10.1 inch, over this holiday season. I haven't built anything in a long time, but anyone who ran a Vibrant a couple years ago around here, should recognize my handle. I maintained a rom for the Vibrant for quite a while, from Froyo to ICS, then life got busy.
Popping into here today, I'm kinda sad to see there's not much if any in the way of development on this device. Happy to have root, thats a start. cduced was right, we do need a better recovery option, at least one that is faster, though what we have now is workable. TWRP may be slow, but it's something. We were always hung up on doing pure aosp source build for the Vibrant, because Sammy is not known for making their kernel source easily and readily available. Working from an existing zip to kang it is easy, but really thats just the same rom, maybe stripped and repackaged. A source build is the desirable outcome.
Though I haven't begun looking into things for this baby yet, and my adb and build tools are far out of date, I am very interested in working towards a better set of options for this device. 4.2.2 still? I can't believe Sammy hasn't released a 4.3 update, that's sad, but goes to show the lack of support they give their devices, to anyone who's been there you know, but you also know, determined devs can make it a better world.
Anthony, and anyone else interested in trying to improve this device, feel free to PM me, I'm thinkin' we should make a Google Hangout or something, make it easier to communicate.

Hey I want aosp on this device too! At the very least, id like a custom kernel that I can overclock to reduce lag. Ive never created a rom, but I dont think roms are the issue...id be interested in porting roms that already exists...x-note for multiwindow features, or pac-rom for a highly customized device.
Are you still up for the projects? Lets heat these forums up!!!

It's ok I have already seen and tried them . I understand the concept of work on something new and the lack of dev it's just that I was surprised because I thought tab 3 was like the others tabs so the development was more evolve.no problem.
Not to knock it, but whats been released in the threads, is nothing more than the deodexed build already up there, with some bloat removed. Even the install scripts have, or had, the same text as the original. So really, nothing new. I am looking into possibly kernel cooking for this device, that seems like a good point to start.
No promises at this point, I'm looking into it though.

This is true but there is finally a bit of interest and may come up with some new goodies..... the reason they all have the same updater.script is because of the recoveries.... they need a little more work to get them to work with the x86 architecture

If anyone have time, pm me and we can discuss about. I'm not a developer, but we can discuss ideas how to bring cm to the device
I have all kinds of Android devices and I use Cyanogenmod on all of them. I like to have the same exact system on each; saves me time, to have to learn only one. Plus I very much like CM.
But on this device, for some reason, most of the development effort seems to go to the *toad releases. Could someone elaborate why? Secondly, why use a *toad instead of the "real" Cyanogenmod?

Because the official releases are posted in the CyanogenMod website under downloads>official devices...the device maintainer for cm on apexqtmo was also banned from xda
Sent from my R3L4Y 4G using xda-developers app
Ummm, What? The official device maintainer for CM is @Nardholio who is definitely still here.
The HypnoToad images started as TeamApexQ's test bed, as time went on, there were tweaks that were made that were not accepted by CM for one reason or another, but we liked them. They became part of our internal builds, which as that stabilized and diverged more from CyanogenMod, we made available as FatToad. OmniToad is based on Omnirom, not CyanogenMod. The majority of TeamApexQ likes the Omni base better, so that has become our development platform.
One of the tweaks that are part of FatToad have bitrotted a bit, and the developer of that tweak has moved on to OmniToad, and has no intention of going back and maintaining said tweak, so FatToad likely will not be seeing any more releases.
Fear not though, the work on HypnoToad DOES still benefit the official CyanogenMod builds, as fixes are freely ported from one to the other.

This is good to hear. Programmers of free software tend to jump ship pretty quickly and get bored with anything that is not new & cool. But Cyanogenmod should be seen as cool, since it's just awesome to have the same system on so many devices.
Thanks for the clarifications.

As a very agreeable argument...the same could go for other great ROMs too and not just CyanogenMod..just takes developers to bring em to the device including CM...to each his own and that's why there is a variety to choose from

Hi there, Let's be a bit careful about calling Cyanogen stupid here for this. I'll be 100% honest and say I understand their apprehension to having a device (their buildboxes) make external calls to a web service they don't control.
Can't say I blame them for saying no, either.
That said, it does indeed look like for the time being there will only be Unofficial builds available, which isn't a big deal. I'm happy to set up nightlies on my buildboxes too.
I'm hoping @invisiblek hasn't abandoned the project either, as he's extremely talented when it comes to getting this stuff working.

Wow..
Not gonna go read the entire Bump! thread right now, but wasn't Codefire thinking of making the process (meaning, I guess, the code) available to developers so they could bump locally?
Hi guys, let's not go off and freak out over this. Discussion is still ongoing, and even if CM doesn't decide to officially build for this phone, we still can have builds done externally by anyone who wants to do so.
Bump has an API that anyone can use as long as they have an account, so there's no reason to be upset.
Keep calm and carry on
Darn that's a bit disappointing. But I'm perfectly fine with anything; official or unofficial as long as it works.

What I think is retarded is that Brint has no reason for not doing it. He's literally being a nazi-like figure just blocking it because he doesn't like it. I'm sorry, how does this make any sense? The worst that would happen is that the bump service (external site) goes down and the build fails. Brint, get over your ego...
CM keeps going down hill with stupid mistakes (like this). First with the One+ One; you gotta be invited to buy a phone? wtf? The hardware is already second grade at this point, who wants a One+ now when you get an N6?
I'll be happy with a solid AOKP rom or a pure Google Lollipop build with xposed/gravitybox
I'll wait to see how this plays out. Hopefully CM will become comfortable with the bump process. I can understand the initial hesitation since it requires something that they cannot control. If they end up not supporting it, honestly it will be CMs loss. The G3 is a very popular phone and there will be plenty of ROM choices out there. So if CM doesn't support it, I'll still have lots of options (and I'm sure someone will unofficially support it too).
Yeah that's really a load of crap especially seeing how Dan already had the script ready to autobump. It's not like it's really that much more work on cyanogenmods part or was Brent just too pansy to have a call out to another server.
I guess we will all have to annoyingly go download and update manually from the forums unless lg actually decides to release a legit boot unlock.
Yeah, I don't really get it!
Hmm, so it seems there be some sort of process they can use still. Keep your hopes up guys
Care to elaborate?
Regardless we will have unofficial with the devs (probably timmytim)pulling commits and upgrading it just as good.

Explain Life I'm 5: Besides CM acting like a$$hats, why do we care if they don't support the OPO anymore? Will we not continue to have every single Android update on Slim. PA, crRom and all the other awesome ROMS out there? I haven't received my OPO yet so I'm just trying to keep up while I patiently wait at the mail box everyday hoping to get it before the new year
If CM do decide to completely stop supporting this device, dropping CM11S/CM12S and CM11/CM12, you can wave goodbye to pretty much every custom ROM too because they basically all rely on CM at some point during their development. That isn't likely to happen though.
If CM decide to just drop official support for this device (CM11S/CM12S), it means there's some kind of a breach of contract happening because this phone was guaranteed to receive updates from CM for at least two years. Many people decided to go with this phone because it has CM on it, because it runs a ROM that's much more customisable than any other stock ROM on the market. It's like buying a Mercedes only to be told after six months that they're switching the AMG engine out for a Kia engine, nobody would be happy about that.

Obviously I'm no dev, but could a CM based ROM be compiled independent of CM just by having the source code. I just assumed in my few years of flashing crap that how it worked. As long as you had the source code from Google/OEM you could compile what ever you needed. Again, I have never tried to develop anything.

OnePlus is reportedly working on a CM-free version of a ROM for their phones, including their flagship, the One.
About the independent developers, yes, they are basing their builds on Cyanogen "base", but wouldnt be the end of the world if CM would stop developing their version, since Cyanogen is actually basing on a base Android ROM too, this means that somebody would take over the same features and develop them from scratch or even base from some of the open source from Cyanogen since, Android is Open and most of their developemt community is open too, and who knows, while it would take time, maybe will come with something better, not that i believe CM is bad.
Come on Oneplus, employ the guys over at slim roms or PA, let them make the roms for the phone if CM wants to be jackholes. My only concern is that, is it now possible that CM would push crappy updates to the phone just to be dicks, full of bugs and problems or worse, brick some phones?

That isn't the case. There's so much stuff that relies on work done by CM, I'm not sure you're quite grasping exactly how integral to development CM are. It isn't just a base. It's the kernel, it's the device trees, the list goes on and on. Yes, if CM were to disappear there would still be development, but there'd be a massive hole to fill.

I do, i am aware they its just not putting a base rom and skinning it, there's a lot of hardware architecture and software architecture (kernel) involved. But in this era, and open software, it would be a matter of time before somebody else can take charge, would not be the end of the world.
Kinda, I mean it's not impossible for CM to be childish and push bug filled software (after all their responses toward oneplus have not exactly oozed trustworthy)
