Hangouts just seems too cluttered and funky for me. I just want the old messaging from my Nexus 4. Is there an APK or anything like that?

I just noticed this too yesterday when I was playing around with my phone. I haven't really messed with it too much because I don't have a SIM yet but what the heck?! Hangouts is WAY too cluttered to be feasible as an SMS/MMS replacement what the heck were they thinking?

Yup, its like everything is a big step forward. But texting is a HUGE step back, and they are forcing people into using hangouts. Its already bad enough that we are forced to keep certain google apps on the phone, but now we are forced to use another service?

I have been testing different IM apps, but all of them have some issue that makes them less than Ideal.
In actuality, the old stock IM app from the G1 always worked best for me. It was reliable, didn't disconnect constantly, and didn't seem to kill the battery as fast.
Is there anything like that, or a mod'ed version that will work on the Nexus?
I've searched for and apk, and asked over in the general section, with no luck.
Enomther's rom comes with it.

I will see if I can pull it out of the ROM and install... I'm still stock ATM, I may root soon though.

It works well, but I can not change the notifications; and the sound is based on the media volume for some reason. Plus it can not use the proper names for yahoo contacts.
Well I pulled the IM apk from the ROM and it installed fine, but it will not sign on. It force closes when you try to sign on, though still remains running on the screen, and you can interact with the program.
Guess it would need Mod'ed to work on non-root, or maybe pushed to the system partition. Can't push with locked bootloader, so would need it to be Mod'ed.
Any devs out there know if this app needs to be in the system partition?

Another reason I want the stock IM app. It uses sms to work, so after the initial login, there is no or next to no data use; being that sms is a push type service, it does not need to poll for new IMs.
I posted this in the dev section for a reason, but they moved it... ah well. Maybe a dev will pop in here and give it a shot.
i did an im.apk search here and found the original and have been running it for a while now.messenger doesnt always want to sign in but yahoo works fine

since it is based on SMS, you must be charged for SMS by your telco right?

Yes, but I have an unlimited plan, so I can send as many as I want.
And SMS are the biggest money makers for these companies. A recent study showed that the cost to actually send an SMS is zero. The only costs the companies have is the cost of setting up the software needed to operate the SMS functions in their systems and the cost of some servers and storage needed to hold the data as it is being sent to users (like if you send a SMS to someone without signal, they must store the info until it can be sent, and its only a few kb) I think the costs of the setup was recouped within a few months and now its pretty much all profit. Sly dogs they are (some places charge $0.25 per SMS out of plan)
Sorry had to rant...
Ouch. Thought I'd be able to use this wonderful sounding app that you've been talking about but I don't have an unlimited sms plan lol.
SMS tends to be my main form of communication on the phone, so I got the unlimited plan. The tmobile everything plus plans are not that bad price wise; more so when you don't get unlimited airtime as well. I don't need a lot of airtime because the people I talk to most just use SMS.
I'm thinking the new radio in 2.2 is not letting the IM app work properly.
So as much as I love android there is one thing that I kinda of envy when it comes to blackberrys and Iphones and and that would be bbm/imessages. Now im well aware there are apps out there like gtalk or chaton which acts like imessages but I personally would like to see this built into the messaging app itself. I am no developer or anything but it seems that imessages works on the device when it is linked towards the email used for the app store so would it not be easy for google to implement this into their os? I mean on the start up of each android device it does ask you for your gmail password so I was just thinking that this just may be a really nice feature to come out with key lime pie or something. Does anyone else feel this way?
Is this any different from Google Talk? Instant Messaging tied to the Gmail account, rather than the phone number. It's just not as immensely popular.

Well thats the thing. GTalk is perfect but for example all of my friends who own android products havent even heard of it. Im just thinking if google linked GTalk to a phone number then it could be good.
I agree. This would be amazing.
Yes that would be awesome

So I guess a better question is what are the odds of this actually being implemented into the next update?
I have to admit that I do miss bbm from when I used blackberry's. But besides that mild feeling of exclusivity I don't really think its much different thn just texting

Ya i hear ya. I guess the only reason I feel something like Imessages would be helpful is because if we are in places with almost no service but there is wifi it would be pretty amazing. Then again i would be scared for samsung or google to implement this because the last thing we need is another apple lawsuit haha

1 in 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.
if google would make it part of the steup wizard and allow images/sounds to be transferred over gtalk, it would be amazing.
Had my N5 for quite a while now and I have only ONE issue with it - Hangouts. It takes ages to load, sometimes as much as 5 seconds. Every single other app is fine, but Hangouts just infuriates me. Am I the only person with this problem?
I'm running Cataclysm and Franco atm, but this was exactly the same when my phone was completely stock. I'm on Dalvik as well, because I can't give up Xposed.
How many messages do you have? If you have several thousand messages, that might be causing the delay in loading
I have never seen any thread about this before so it must be isolated to you. Hangouts was superquick for me but I uninstalled it in favor of textra.
I have about 500 messages in there. I've dumped it now anyway, gone to the old Google Messaging app. There's nothing about Hangouts that I particularly like anyway, so getting rid was an easy decision.

Wow. I don't ever save any of my messages if that convo isn't important anymore. You're like my wife. She never deletes any of her texts on her note 2 and you should see her default stock app lag like hell loading.

If it's that important, have them email it to you. All SMSs are deleted as soon as they're read
I got 15,000+ messages. I use hangouts on a regular basis and I never experienced it loading for more than 1.5 seconds on any situation.
I encountered that on my old Nexus S. But this is a Nexus 5. I don't expect hiccups or lags on any app and so far it delivers.
So I've tried using the stock app and 8sms but anytime someone sends me a picture, it comes in super small and very pixelated. Sender can be an iPhone or Android. I've also noticed if someone sends me multiple photos, the last one or 2 is in black and white and not color.
Any suggestions?

This has happened to me too and not found what causes it. I also miss some videos people send. I believe it has to do with the 1200kb max MMS can receive. Wife sent a 1800kb video and everyone got it but me. All of them on verizon, half with android and other half with iphone. Im hoping we can make that max even bigger.

Does anyone know for a FACT the file limit size Verizon will allow it's customers to send via mms??? This would help
Taking 10 seconds out of my day found this. Seems Verizon stats that the limit is 1.2mb which is 1200k correct? So that's our limit to send and receive no matter how high we want to make the setting on the phone, network will only do this?

I will look into hangouts, thanks.
I installed Textra earlier today and it seems alot better.
Was looking into this as well. I use GoSMS and the pictures from group texts are mad crappy.
I was wondering if a custom ROM would fix it but I guess not.
Anyone getting better results with another messaging app?
I am using textra and it seems to be better.

This is my first HTC device and the first time on Verizon, coming from the nexus line. So far, of course loving the build quality! So, so, so good! But my question is very simple and just an annoyance, maybe there's nothing to fix this. Group messaging works perfect, nothing wrong with it, its just every time I click on the conversation it says converting to MMS, I don't care that its doing that, but the message that pops up every time is starting to annoy me... Is there any fix for this? Couldn't find anything in the settings

Not the Verizon one, but stock one that comes with HTC. I'm use to hangouts cause coming from nexus and I didn't mind that at all. Reason I'm not using the Verizon messaging app is cause the rep at Verizon was messing with my phone while the number was being ported and basically setting it up for me cause he has an m8, said he was saving me a few headaches

Just go back to using Hangouts. That is what I use, no problems at all.

More likely that VZW rep is responsible for your current headache!
Go back to the store and ask what he messed up!
