Okay I have a pair of Rockets
1 is hard Bricked and needs a JTag
2 has a smashed screen n digitizer
So I'm wondering what would be easier just change the board on the bricked one or screen on the cracked one?

Put the board from the one with the cracked screen into the bricked one. Save the rest of the parts (speakers..usb/charging port,cameras..etc) for spares.

I'm going to try it today, thanks
Took me 20 minutes and it was up n running
Okay I swapped the board, everything works as it should except for I have no mobile networks at all.
I have flashed a couple different radios, Roms...still no signal.
I tore the phone down again and double checked all connections. Everything was tight. Still nothing...
So I then swapped out the board at the bottom and still nothing.
IDK whats causing this...but it's driving me nuts.
Any Idea's??

With damaged phones it could be anything. Reset apn to default then choose a network operator..if not that I would start from scratch and Odin back to stock. From there start to troubleshoot all possibilities.

When I first swapped boards it was stock. Booted right up like it's suppose to.
Then I factory reset it...still no signal.
Tore it all apart again, everything is connected and tight, no stress on anything, all ribbons are where there suppose to be and connected firmly.
Reassembled still nothing...tore it apart again, swapped out the board at the bottom of the phone so now basically it's the entire guts of the 2nd phone that only had a smashed screen in the case of the 1st phone that was bricked.
Then I flashed TWRP through ODIN. It's easier using TWRP than ODIN
Then I reflashed Rogers stock FW 4.1.2...still has circle with line through it instead of signal icon.
ATT Stock FW...same as above.
Then I flashed a couple different radios...still nothing
Then I flashed a couple different 4.2 and 4.3 Roms,it recognizes that there is a SIM inserted as it asks for the network unlock code...(Phone is still locked to Rogers) I don't want to pay to unlock it if its not going to get a signal.
Had buddy over and tried his Rogers Sim and, the APN was set correctly, but it didn't show any network operators as it's not receiving a signal.

It does if that IMEI is blacklisted. Where did you get the phones? It would seem that the one with the cracked screen has a blacklisted IMEI. If you claimed warranty on one they will have shut down the phone that way. If you bought it off of craigs or ebay and the seller claimed warranty on it they would have shut the phone down that way. You get the idea.

Yes I get the idea and know where you coming from...but it's not possible.
Phone got damaged in a domestic incident. Tough guy knocked it out of her hands, it had a case on it but the digitizer got smashed.
I just happen to have a bricked SR sitting here with a mint screen that worked fine until it got bricked.
So I swapped boards...figured all would be good and I have a functioning Rocket again...NO
Dbl checked the IMEI hereand it's valid as I suspected

Well then it's the modem. It got damaged in the fall. My wife gave hear old Atrix a tea bath once. I pulled the phone apart and dried it in rice for a few days. Put it back together and it booted. Baseband was gone though. So I flashed three different ROMs to it all with the same result. Phone was fine but the modem chip was hosed. Sounds like you have something similar on your device.

should i even bother making a jig or is the wicked witch finally dead?
Why not try a jig?

Worth a shot, a pack of 100k resistors is 99c at radioshack, but I'd put my money on perma-bricked. In almost all cases (I actually have yet to hear of a single case where someone managed to recover from a black screen brick), a completely unresponsive phone, where pressing the power button does nothing, means that the phone has been paper-weighted.
You most likely destroyed your bootloader. If that's the case, your only options are to either buy a riff box and reflash the bootloader and firmware directly onto the chip via jtag, or mail it back to Samsung and let them do it.
Sorry to hear about your rotten luck, dude. Happens to everyone sooner or later :\
Provided that the phone is in good physical condition and none of the water strips have changed colors, Samsung should fix it up under warranty. They will even pick up the shipping. Give them a call.
yep, this thing is a solid brick. i've recovered from pretty horrific things (e.g. the battery falling out during a flash) but never had it completely unresponsive.
i'll try to get a replacement. maybe if i say "i flashed a bad bootloader" the service rep will go along with it .
edit: i had to dig out my iphone 2g to use in the meantime. 1) at&t reactivated my unlimited data plan. 2) i installed gingerbread on it. lolz.
I've posted this in the CM9 Alpha6 thread but didnt have any response so trying here since it may not be ROM related. I'm S-ON and have been running A6 for 5-6 weeks and besides the battery drain and random reboots it was ok. Two days ago I tried the WiFi tethering for the first time and it work well for a few hours. However, suddenly it rebooted 3 times in a loop and went dead after the last reboot. I tried all combinations of pressing buttons (power, hboot, recovery...) , replacing battery, charger and so on and it just doenst power up and doesnt show any ligths. Connected to the laptop it doenst see the phone since is not powered on. The battery doesn't look swollen or defective and it was fully charged when the phone went dead.
I went yesterday to the TMobile store and tried with a new battery and didnt do anything. Also tried different chargers and USB to laptop, nothing, no response.
Any ideas why the phone went dead? Is it definitely gone? Should i add it to the collection of paperweights?
Thanks a lot
Also, is there anyway to wipe the phone's data? TMobile told me i can get a replacement but im worried all my data is in the dead phone ill be sending back
In almost ALL circumstances if you can't get in, they can't either. At least until it's sent back and you already have your new phone. Then HTC doesn't really have the time OR inclination to do forensic system analysis of every phone and will just go about replacing its guts & sending it back out as a refurb.
It having been a commercial "semi-flop" I persoanlly believe they will be happy when they all die and we all shut the hell up about ICS & JB. LOL

I dont worry about TMo or HTC bringing ICS/JB for any of my devices, since that will mean again getting read of crapware, settings....personally i prefer any of the multiple ROMs and thats part of the Android beauty...
Now, since i got the replacement i have to worry about sending my old phone back and it ending up resold without being wiped....do you know any part of the phone where a screwdriver tip (or hammer) will ensure the phone memory is gone?
If you could get it to come back on even just to HBoot I could tell you how to fry it BUT it would just take it back to where it is right now but with the partition tables borked. I can understand your concerns but I honestly think you're worrying about something that won't happen. Even if they were to use the internal memory again (IF they could) they would do a partition repair & reformat before reinstalling the stock ROM. I would be concerned though about sending one back with physical damage. That COULD turn into a "GOTCHA". KWIM?
Judging by your description, I'd say your phone has a hardware problem. If no lights are coming on, and there's absolutely no response, it's either the motherboard or the display.
But nothing HTC can't handle. They should be able to fix it and send it back no problem. Very rarely will they send you a new phone. They always try to save the phone you send in.
For software, they can probably restore it using their factory special cable connection (forgot what it's called).
That being the case it would still be sent back out to someone else after the repairs. TMobile will send a replacement to a customer and the borked one is sent back to them in the same box the replacement came to you in. At least that's what's happened to everyone I know (including myself) that has gone thru TMobile instead of having to deal directly with HTC.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ +1 couldn't have said it better myself

I think you are right and there is some HW problem, I was wondering if it had to do with me having the WiFi tethering on since i just switched it on for the first time 3-4 before it went dead and the phone was hotter than usual. Maybe nothing to do but i thought it could be a possibility

Just as an update and to post my experience replacing the phone; since i had insurance, TMo sent me the a new phone ... in less than 24h !!!, seems if you report before 5pm you get the new phone in your hands the AM of the next business day, pretty good.
The phone came on a special package, with return labels, but without SIM, SD, battery or back cover, just the "carcass". Put the old phone sim and old battery in and i worked fine....then spent the next hour unlocking, recovery, flashing ROM and updating apps+data....done and my new phone is practically the same as the old was.
Now i have 7 days to return the old one in the same package or they will charge me $300....probably im paranoid about the data in the old phone, but after reading http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/08/apple-amazon-mat-honan-hacking/all/ i immediately went and added 2-step verification to my google account...
So in summary, very good replacing process from TMo (if you have insurance), and added extra security to my GAccount...for the rest, just crossing fingers that nothing bad happens in the future

It's sure good to hear that it all went so smoothly for you! :good:
Ok, here's my problem. My sensation got water damage. I dried it. But the screen won't turn on. Backlight is not working. But when i turn the phone on it vibrates. Assuming that after the boot process i can hear the message alert like it recieved a message. Green light is also blinking. I can charge the phone. Charge light is also working. But since i can't see anything on the screen i can't be sure if evertything is working. I took the phone apart, lcd is soaked wet after all that drying. I know it because i tore the lcd apart. Anyway, my real problem is, i found a very cheap sensation with motherboard damage. I'm thinking of buying it and use my motherboard with it. But i can't be too sure if everything is alright with my motherboard. From what i can see nothing is burnt or anything on the motherboard. Since i tore the lcd apart and it's not connected, now the phone goes into bootloop from what i can tell from the vibration. And i didn't think about connecting the phone to the computer to see if it gets recognized. And now with the bootloop and everyhing plugging it to the computer is not an option anymore. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think I have a working motherboard? Do you think i should try my luck?

If you should try it depends on how much the broken phone costs. If it would cost you $200 then it's not worth it because the risk is too big.
If it would cost you $30 then it's absolutely worth a shot.
I'd say you have about a 40% chance of fixing it by combining parts from the 2 phones. So it's about how much you're willing to risk on a 40% chance.
It's gonna cost me about $100. And except the motherboard the phone is in perfect condition. Just like new. It feels like my motherboard is working fine. I mean i have all the indications that he phone is alive except the display. It charges just fine. Boots up. Even getting message indications. That's why i'm really hopeful. But of course i can't be sure 100% sure...

You're absolutely right. I replaced my screen while ago. My sensation was in a pretty bad condition. I also have to change the touch screen cuz it was popped up and part of it was unresponsive. Back cover was cracked. I also needed to replace that. My wifi was not working for a while. I believe wifi issues were software related but could never find a working solution to that. Tried every hboot, radio, rom, ruu avaliable to solve my wifi issues with no luck. It's gonna be like renewing the whole thing this way. And if I got this working, and start using it this way it's gonna give me a great satisfaction. ) I was mostly wondering if you guys think my mobo is fine...

Again....40% chance the mobo is okay.
But if its not both your current broken phone and your new broken phone have value as parts devices on ebay. So you will be able to get some money to put towards a new phone if all else fails.

From what I have gathered about motherboard issues. Once they're gone they don't even boot up. And even if they boot up mostly they won't stay on long time. Mine was on and charging for hours. Of course without the display. The guy who's selling the phone said during the update he run out of battery and phone was hard bricked. He took it to repair center and they screwed up his motherboard. That's what the second repair center told the guy anyways. His motherboard could also be fine, who knows. What I'm planning to do is, take my motherboard with me and try it on the spot before buying the phone. It would take me about 3 minutes to swap the motherboard anyways.
Just wanted to let you know that I saved my Sensation. Ordered the phone with the motherboard problem. Installed my motherboad and got it working. Thanks for your responses...
Ok..
I had this phone for a while and I started using it again recently. I have fully replaced the digitizer/lcd bezel before with no problems (been a phone repair tech for 10 years) And it has worked fine.
The other night I reverted it back to stock because it seems to be the only way to get a constant data signal. Worked fine. I then updated it to the newest OTA update without a problem.
I then rebooted it and it stuck on a black screen loop with the buttons going on and off for hours. I spent 7 hours trying to figure out what was wrong, flashing, re flashing.. Nothing. Finally I get CWM recovery installed and find out my SD card is fried. So I put a new one in, and transfer over the roms I want t flash. 3 different roms, all with no touch screen.
Revert back to stock, still no touch screen.
Could something have gone bad on the board to have caused this? Is there something system wise not getting wiped that may cause this? Its to much of a coincidence that the touch screen and buttons would go out after all this happened.
Any help would be appreciated. Im waiting on a new digitizer now to check because Ive already gone over all the connections. But if its something software wise, Id like to try that before doing another digitizer replacement.
Thanks
funny you made this thread. i just got my hands on a soft bricked g2x that was stuck on the blue lg logo. after a quick nvflash it boots right up......but with no touchscreen. not sure if it ever worked as im not the original owner.
but i'll be keeping my eyes out on this thread for sure!
Id give a pretty to see inside both of your phones. Sounds like a bad contact on the ribbons.or one of them may have been ripped during a screen installation. I've never heard of the screen just up and quoting working without some major stuff happening to the phone. My guess is these screens were replaced with the wrong screen.just a guess though.

I have done phone repairs for quite a few years, It wasnt a wrong screen and has worked fine for a year since its replacement. I have already opened the phone again and made sure all contacts were fine. What Im trying to figure out is if there is maybe some part of the system/boot that holds the touchscreen drivers and they have bee erased?
Again, I find its a huge coincidence that it worked fine up until this happened then as soon as its booting again, stops working... Which is why I think its a software issue.
Try touching the corners of the screen after booting up start with the top left and go clockwise. One of the roms used to mess up the connectivity between phone and screen. And that is supposed to reset the touch screen. A old g1 trick

Hi! My Nexus 5 got water damaged during a hiking trip. When I came home I disassembled and reassembled it, and it started working. However, what I found out was that the phone got no signal to the cellular network. The carrier name shows up, and when I boot the phone, it ask me for PIN-code (which is accepted). When I go into settings where I can select which carrier I wan't to use, it shows all the carriers available, but I can not connect to any of them. Hope you understand my problem and thank you for all help
PS: Also, NFC does not work.

Or just buy a new cover for 25$ with NFC antenna ...
try reassembling the antennas or replacing them they are kinda fragile if you bent em'
MAYBE your in for a 100$ but it's worth tring it last time I check 16gb was still 350$ why not save one if everything else is working but two servicable glitches?
Edit: btw. warranty was void the moment it got soaked before the dissasembly/re part!
When it comes to water damage...and something doesn't work after....to me its not worth messing with. You may have other issues you've yet to discover as well.
Time for a new phone. Why spend a bunch of cash just to end up realizing its a lost cost.
