Where are Notifications Sounds stored? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I copy and pasted them in media, media/notifications, and notifications folders. all 3! none of them let me change the notification sound for hangouts and SMS, or facebook messenger. Where are they stored on kitkat to change them,
EDIT: Same goes for ringtones... What folder?

All i can tell you is to download the Rings Extended application. If they won't show up in the standard sound picker, they will show up in that app.

Have you tried restarting/rebooting your phone? I don't have mine yet, but that had happened on my current Samsung and that would fix it, after the reboot the new files were finally recognized.

Zedge ringtones not working?

As above, I can get sounds to work for ring tones and notifications, but after a couple hours, they stop working. Anyone else or any thoughts? Maybe g2x isn't supported by this app yet like tango?
Funny cause mine work. I downloaded Zedge last night (first time user) and downloaded a bunch of images and notification tones.
I set my background and notification tones up and they are working great. Maybe use a File explorer to find the actual downloaded files and move them to the proper folders so they appear in the stock settings selector. I think they go in SDCARD/ringtones.

Thanks, I'll try again. Did your set them as default tones in zedge or through settings-sound-etc?
Gotta set them through Zedge.
When I originally installed it, and went to Settings-Sound and clicked on the dropdown box, I had a popup to choose with program to use Zedge or Android. Out of habit I chose Remember Android, which the stock list won't display Zedge tunes.
So just set them through the actual Zedge app once you download them.
I nevr set mine thru zedge and all my ringtones and notifications work fine....
sent from my G2X with no regrets
Seems to be working fine for now. Maybe just a factory Rom gremlin or something. /shrug

[Q] Did something change with regards to ringtones and notification sounds?

I've got a few .mp3's that I used on my GS2 for ringtones and notification sounds. I can go into my contacts and assign unique ringtones from my Music library but I can't get the standard ringtone and notification sounds to change, these mp3 files don't show in their respective list.
I have them on my internal sd and even copied them to /sdcard/media/audio/notifications with no luck. What am I missing?

yes its that .ogg format that stops it from popping up in your list of tones......i still have not figured a way to convert to that yet. doesnt look hard though.
should just be a simple converter program and your done, i want to look into this as well so i will keep you posted if i find an easy way to do so....i already tried the obvious change the extention with no luck
I took mine and put them in the "system/media/audio/ringtones". Left the .mp3 and worked great. Hope this helps.
I just have my ringtones (in .mp3) in /sdcard/Ringtones and they show up for default ringtones.
I noticed it showed up after it "scanned for media" but I did this before I rooted and I froze whatever was scanning so that might be something to consider.

At first it didn't work but then I figured I might have to do a reboot and that did the trick. Weird that before I didn't have to move them into those directories but that's perfectly fine with me. Appreciate it.

That actually sounds right. I forgot to do that this time around but the above option worked fine as well. Good call...

SO now you can change the notification ringtone? Because i have Zedge app and have some tones that i hav set up through setting and put as notification ringtone but it still don't change it will whistle everywhere!
If putting the file in media works then i will be fine!
I've found that if you put your ringtones in a folder called "Ringtones" and your notification sounds in a folder called "Notifications" (in /sdcard or /sdcard/external_sd) the phone will allow you to use them for their appropriate purposes. No reboot should be needed either.
You can of course push them into /system/media... if you want though

Thanks Aggror, I did that, but for some reason they still won't show. To set any of these, I had to open them in SE File Explorer use the "Set as Ringtone/Notification sound" option.

Hi,
can you refresh the link for the ringtones - the target has moved or been deleted. Thanks
Also can someone give file location for notification sounds and for ringtones in kitkat 4.4.2
Where can I copy the sounds to. I can't find the notifications folder for sounds on the phone.
Thanks
Ringtones link not working. Plz Update.

[WTF] Custom ringtone upload ?

If somebody will upload the custom ringtone/music file via adb to the /sdcard/Music - no of the stock Sony apps will see it (Sound setting or music player) until reboot My small and stup^H^H Japaneeze devs - here 2017 not the 1997 year !!!!
MX Player sees the files just after upload.
The stock music player is awfull and totally useless. This is big shame for the audio company like Sony. Somebody have to do the harakiri there:
- no way to set the source folders for the music
- nobody knows the source folders names (seems like Music is one of them)
- no way to force folders refresh, so the apps are blind until reboot
- no way to play all the albums you have (!!!!)
- no way to set the play mode (loop album, loop song, go to next album)
It is not the player but the bleeding painful useless app at the "such named top" phone ;(

That's got nothing to do with the sony music app! This is android's stock-media-server's problem, which is a real plague for a long time. Apps, that show new items immediately are doing a different thing: They actively watch specific folders (whether they are customizable or not) and usually don't rely on android's on-board-toys.
About the other point: I agree with you.:good:
Well, the google developers are brain dead by the definition - they just screwing the Linux all the time in favor of Android (try to connect the password-less bluetooth device to the recent Android for ex.). There is excellent "inotify" syscall which they are not aware about. But the google dumbness do not excuse the Sony here
You simply put it in the Ringtone, Notification , Alarm folder on the internal and it will show up when you select Ringtone, Notification, Alarm.
You can also store it on you SD card if you create the folders Ringtone, Notification , Alarm first. They can also be store in a folder

Again - I do not have the sdcard. It is the internal storage. Pushing the file to the Notification/Ringtone/Alarm folder just give you nothing - you still do not have the stock sound choices.

Putting any sound in any of the folders lets the stock audio picker see the file. If you put it in Ringtone audio picker will see a new ringtone, notification, alarm works the same.
It doesn't matter if you put the folders on the internal or external. The most important is that the folders "Ringtone", "Notification", "Alarm" are in the root of internal or external.
I literally just tried this before I posted my comment.
Put files in notification folder.

It's obviously defect since it works for everyone else but you.

Facebook messenger sound.

Hi all.
I am using Messenger for Facebook chat. Problem that I have is notification sound. I can't turn it off. I have put all options into Silent, however whenever I get any message, it plays sound.
Has anyone got the same issue?
Hello,
Download the attachment and extract the mp3 from the zip file. Put the mp3 file in the notifications folder from the internal memory of the phone.
Go to facebook messenger app -> notifications and sound and select silence as a notification sound.
Good luck

There is a folder "Notifications" in root of your phone
Put it there then follow upper guide. Basically you are choosing sound this sound instead default one. This is notification without sound so it is quiet.
Unfortunately I don't have this folder. I'm using a Huawei p40 pro with latest emui. Would it work if I created a folder with that name?

You can set your notification sound on settings - sound and vibration - notification sound - music on device.
Or you want it for Messenger too ??
You can create a folder named "Notifications" without any problem. Or see the locations from which you can choose and put the sound there.
I put it in the "sounds" and it works. Thanks guys!
