I've installed ChompSMS, but when I go into Settings - Wireless & Networks - Default SMS app - only Hangouts is listed. I've tried rebooting the phone, but still nothing. Does ChompSMS need to be updated so it'll show up on this list? Is there another way to make it the default app?
Thanks!

I got this problem too :silly:
It needs updating with 4.4 support.

What he said lol.
There are particular parameters that an app has to have in 4.4 for Hangouts to recognise it as an SMS app.
What the others said.
Long-winded answer:
Basically, before 4.4, there was no such thing as an "SMS app" on Android. Apps like ChompSMS didn't actually directly receive and process SMSes. They listened for SMS received events and intercepted the SMS message as it went into the default SMS app. This was an incredibly hacky method, would cause weird issues (like you'd get notifications from two SMS apps), and wasn't at all supported officially by Google.
Now in 4.4, they added the ability for apps to act as proper replacements for SMS. But they must stop using the old APIs/intents and use the new 4.4 APIs to do this. If/when the app developer does this, then you'll see it as an option.
I have the same issue you too and have been unable to find any SMS 'app' that can be set as the default.... Anyone have any success?
I've tried - Chomp, Now and Textra and none are 'selectable'!
Thanks.

This is what you need:

Works flawlessly.
I emailed the developer last week and got a reply to say a fixed version would be out this week. It's not out at the time of writing this post, but on the Google Play website someone gave it a 1 star review for not working on the Nexus 5 and one of the devs replied to say "It's fixed. Please email us with the subject line NOT FAQ." Maybe they are sending people an APK if they email them?

8sms absolutely does work, make sure you have the most updated version from the Play Store and then go to Settings>More... (under Wireless & Networks), then tap Default SMS app and change to 'Messaging', which is 8sms. Could not recommend this app higher.
I just got a reply from the developer. They are supposedly releasing a version that's compatible with the Nexus 5/Android 4.4 today. They also linked me to a beta version that works, although I haven't tested it: -

Thanks for the link! Working great on my Nexus 5 now. This is version 5.89, the version on the Play Store was released Nov 12 and is v5.88.
Chomp user here too, though when I installed the beta it didn't seem to have notifications turned on by default, so I missed a few texts. Worth checking if you install it.
Version 5.89 has been released to the Play Store, has KitKat compatibility.

Some Stock MMS apps arn't supported. I used the wuick reply ones and they dont seem to be tablet friendly. You have to trial and error with the mms's that are out and see your cup of tea. the cm10 stock white works best and always notifys.

I can't find it with my XOOM either. However, if I look at Play on my computer, I can find it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...tZHJ0b29scy5hcHBzLmd2aW50ZWdyYXRpb24uZnJlZSJd
Says this app is not compatible with my XOOM but is with my E4GT. I don't need it on my E4GT.
Is there a way to force the app to install anyway?
If I can figure a way to get this working with out needing root, I want to it setup on my father's tablet (TF101), where root isn't an option.

As A TF101 owner, it can be rooted. But I'm assuming you mean you don't want to root his.
And you could always install it to your E4GT and then pull the app, save it somewhere and then uninstall it.
Then sideload it on the Xoom.

Yup close enough. All my stuff is rooted, but as far as some older folks are concerned, some believe roots are for plants. *shrugs*
They still wonder occasionally why they can't see their Gmail when they open the Email app.
It's all good, I might just put GV on there and see if that is good enough before I spend too much time looking into this.

Set the GV icon to YES for statues bar and make sure gvoice is intergrated with the check. Does it instantly fail? if so then you messed up a step but if it trys sending and fails after trying for 10+ seconds this should fix it.

I found this and am using the GV integration APK from OP only and mating that with HTC Desire Z(tmobile g2) with not carrier(wifi only) running Andromadus Mimicry v1.5.0 ROM and it work just as well as M+GV but without the price.
I have latest market Google Voice APK from market and it makes this integration have a bug. Notification must be enabled in the Google Voice app to receive messages to stock messaging app. I believe this is do to a update in the Google Voice app. this same bug occurs with the $5 M+GV app from the market ATM. You get dual notification but I can live with that until its fixed.
THANKS!!!!!!! saved me the hassle of clicking cancel all the time in M+GV because $5 was too salty for a toy project.
Now to continue the search for getting MMS in stock messaging
Which apk is GV Integration in relation to Google Play? It's reading as the paid version for me.
I installed the mms.apk from the op link but it keeps f/c

Hangouts doesn't show online/offline/busy statuses, and I use Google Talk for chatting, so Hangouts is fairly useless to me. I rooted, used Titanium Backup to uninstall Hangouts, and installed the attached APK. I imagine if you allow it to update, you'll end up with Hangouts again, so don't allow it to update.

Yes but it isn't sorted, it should be sorted by online/offline of friends who you've actually chatted with THEN everyone else. Hangouts doesn't do that and is inferior hence why most of us are hanging on to gtalk. I'll probably just switch full time to trillian if they don't sort out the sorting issue on Hangouts.

By the way, there are very recent reports (within the last day) of a problem using the old Google Talk. Supposedly, it has been resolved, but the issue was basically that it may have been sending messages to the wrong recipient. (Yup, that's a bad one.)
So, "...it appears to largely affect Google Talk users who have not yet upgraded to Google’s new Hangouts service."
http://rootzwiki.com/news/google-talk-comes-back-vengeance-misdirects-hangouts-messages/
So i created a backup of hangouts, then uninstalled through titanium back-up and then installed your APK however it wouldn't show up in my app drawer anymore. Is there a reason for that?

I believe you need a samsung phone to have the messages and email apps on the watch. It's one of the limited functions of using the Gear S3 with a non samsung phone.
You can use other messaging apps like Textra, they just don't fully work the same. You will get messages though.

Well it's not going to install on the watch either way. However Textra does work. Download it on your phone and enable notifications in Gear Manager. I know it works as I have used it. However unless you use stock Samsung apps you don't get full use of the app. It's the same thing I'm dealing with for emails. I hate the stock app, but can't fully use a substitute because that is how Samsung has designed the system to be.

Ahhh I see. Yes, have found that gmail allows notifications to be replied to and read whereas the android mail app only allows a short preview/header of emails with no reply option.
Try Bluemail email app. Shows full email. They're quick to respond and the phone app is very customizeable and full featured as any email app.
Aqua Mail also has a setting for Smart Watch Enhancement which includes Gear.

If you want to root your phone there is a Magisk module that installs Google Framework which allows non-Google phones to use Google Dialer and Google Messages. The Google versions of those apps usually won't work on non-Google phones unless it is an Android One device.
Google messages has worked on every other device for me. Good news though, I installed the global miui 10 beta and android messages (incl MMS) works perfectly without any tinkering. So all of this will be a thing of the past...

I had the exact same issue. MMS didn't work for me on 9.5.19 Upgraded to 8.26 MIUI 10 beta and mms works perfectly.
I can receive and send MMS now on MIUI 10. However, sending GIF works BUT receiving them just gives me a jpg of the first frame of the GIF. Has anyone fixed this? Textra does not work. Messenger does not work. The stock messaging app doesn't even allow them to be inserted.
It seems the newest update released today for Miui9 has fixed Google Messages.
Maybe they backported the fix from Miui10?

Hi guys,
I have had an MMS issue with Lineage ROMs and solved it by merging APNs, if you have on dedicated fro the web, and the other one for the MMS.
Simply copy / paste the data related to MMS from the dedicated MMS APN to the web APN, and add set type to "default, internet, mms".
It has worked immediately.
Hope it helps !
New to OnePlus, have the Verizon version of the 8 with the Verizon messages app as default. I'd like to go back to the Google messages app but it doesn't allow full functionality for some reason so I'm looking for a comparable replacement. Any recommendations?

A bit of backstory :
I'm literally obsessed in finding a messaging app that has good design and UX, because before Google had revamped Google message, I didn't liked the design of the app. I tried sooooo many app, in the end I can advise 2 of them that are really good (excluding Textra SMS since I heard they had privacy issues):
• Pulse: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.klinker.messenger
• QKSMS: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moez.QKSMS
Using Google Messages. Make sure your Carrier Services app is up to date. Reboot and the RCS features should work.
