[App]+[MOD]Android Tablet Native SMS + Google Voice - Android Apps and Games

About:
This tutorial will show tablet owners how to install a phone messenger and get Google Voice to work with it. MMS isn't supported but SMS will work. Notifications will work. Everything just like the 'Messenger + Google Voice app' has without the price. ROOT ONLY!
Needed:
Tablet
GV Intergration v2.0.0.4(attached: gvi2.5.apk)
Google Voice(attached: gv54.apk)
Phone Messenger APK You want(attached: Mms.apk)
Steps:
1) Install Google Voice from the apk attached and setup the account.
2) Install GV Intergration and setup.
Settup Should Be:
GEmail: Real
GPass: Real
Enable Intergration: Yes(Check this after step 4)
Intergration Type: ROOT
Send Type: Google Account
ALL Contacts
Replys to Texts: Yes
Sig Sent: blank
Sig Recieve: blank
Recieve Notifications: Naitive
Notification Bar: Yes or No(doesn't mater unless you have a sending issue)
Screen On: Yes
Popup: No
3) Move Mms.apk into android/app/Mms.apk. Tablets won't have one here.
4) Now install the Mms.apk from the apps folder.
5) Go back and Enable Intergration. Tablet will Reboot!
6) After reboot, run Messenger and Voice at the same time. Send some texts through messenger to your number. If you dont recieve a reply your gvoice app needs to relogin. Continue sending some texts till it notifys you to relogin if it hasn't already. Took my tablet(Asus TF101) 15 seconds to notify my Google Voice to relogin. Once you relogin it will update itself and all will be fully functional. You don't need to do these steps again. Your done!
Note: Now that the app is considered a phone native app with its number you can link gosms, chomp and such messenger to it.

thanks for the guide...
i am able to send and receive texts via google voice, however, i'm not getting any notification of a new text from the stock messaging app.
any ideas?

I think I'm missing something. Where is the GV Integration app? I can't find it in the play store

Searching for the GV integration app in the play store on my nexus 7, I found a free app that appears to do everything this guide purports to accomplish without any extra steps. Just install the app, allow access to your gmail account (you don't have to type in your password) and you're ready to send text messages from the included stock MMS app

Some Stock MMS apps arn't supported. I used the wuick reply ones and they dont seem to be tablet friendly. You have to trial and error with the mms's that are out and see your cup of tea. the cm10 stock white works best and always notifys.

I can't find it with my XOOM either. However, if I look at Play on my computer, I can find it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...tZHJ0b29scy5hcHBzLmd2aW50ZWdyYXRpb24uZnJlZSJd
Says this app is not compatible with my XOOM but is with my E4GT. I don't need it on my E4GT.
Is there a way to force the app to install anyway?
If I can figure a way to get this working with out needing root, I want to it setup on my father's tablet (TF101), where root isn't an option.
He hates smartphones; he's still using a Sanyo Katana lol

As A TF101 owner, it can be rooted. But I'm assuming you mean you don't want to root his.
And you could always install it to your E4GT and then pull the app, save it somewhere and then uninstall it.
Then sideload it on the Xoom.

Or, just use Mighty Text for free from the play store. SMS + MMS, plus you get to keep your phone number and integrates with Google Voice. It's free, you can utilize it via tablet and/or a Chrome extension.

Tried the method as per instruction and can't get it to send.
By the way this isn't a nexus 10 its an HP Touchpad.

Yup close enough. All my stuff is rooted, but as far as some older folks are concerned, some believe roots are for plants. *shrugs*
They still wonder occasionally why they can't see their Gmail when they open the Email app.
It's all good, I might just put GV on there and see if that is good enough before I spend too much time looking into this.

Set the GV icon to YES for statues bar and make sure gvoice is intergrated with the check. Does it instantly fail? if so then you messed up a step but if it trys sending and fails after trying for 10+ seconds this should fix it.

Tried again after disabling integration and then I uninstalled gv and gv integration and MMS, followed the steps as is and attempted to send a text and it took like 10 seconds before failing. Also tried sending it multiple times.
When I enter my email should it be just the username or with the @gmail.com extension? I'm adding the extension.

Also sign out of Google Voice and reInstall the given apk or(downgrade[uninstal update]) to have it install and relogin once setup is complete.

Depends on what messenger you want. Just google CM10 MMS.apk.

I added both the gvintergration and mms apks I personaly used to do this. All should work. Remember to log out and login after setup if sending doesnt work. Mine autoforced me out then updated gvoice after I reloged in. Let it autoupdate.

Anybody try updating Google voice or do I have to use that version?

I found this and am using the GV integration APK from OP only and mating that with HTC Desire Z(tmobile g2) with not carrier(wifi only) running Andromadus Mimicry v1.5.0 ROM and it work just as well as M+GV but without the price.
I have latest market Google Voice APK from market and it makes this integration have a bug. Notification must be enabled in the Google Voice app to receive messages to stock messaging app. I believe this is do to a update in the Google Voice app. this same bug occurs with the $5 M+GV app from the market ATM. You get dual notification but I can live with that until its fixed.
THANKS!!!!!!! saved me the hassle of clicking cancel all the time in M+GV because $5 was too salty for a toy project.
Now to continue the search for getting MMS in stock messaging

Which apk is GV Integration in relation to Google Play? It's reading as the paid version for me.

I installed the mms.apk from the op link but it keeps f/c
Everything works fine , just not over the mms app
Any suggestions ??

SMS to Tablet - DeskSMS

I searched and I don't think this has been covered here yet

http://lifehacker.com/5827451/desksms-is-the-best-phone+to+desktop-sms-solution-weve-seen-yet
I used to use syncsms and while it was good it sometimes would just not work, and it utilized dropbox which I wasn't a fan of. This is awesome and uses google chat or email. All I did was create a new gmail just for this purpose and keep google talk logged into it on my tablet. Just wanted to share the wealth and all props goes to Koush who also developed RomManager, man that guy is awesome.
i love this app with the Chrome extension, but found that it was cluttering up my gchat contact list with people's phone numbers as contacts. To fix I set the app to only send emails and filter them in Gmail. I like the idea of setting up a separate email address to handle that issue.
I take it you have to side load on the TF? Market shows incompatible for TF but good for my N1
You install the app on your phone, then i use google talk to receive the messages on the transformer. The app just forwards the messages

Ah OK, got it thanks.
I use textab for this feature. Works very well.
I dont like using Bluetooth, and this way they don't need to be near eachother to work in case I forget my phone
TextTab does work well when I was using the beta, only thing I wish it did was enable upon boot. I always forget to enable it after phone or tablet boot up.
I use SynSMS except like mentioned it's not always reliable.
I like this DeskSMS so far. I can get rid of Mighty Text and SyncSMS and replace with one app.
Also with this as with SyncSMS, I can leave my phone home and on while out of the country and still get my SMS.
I use the google voice app on my transformer. It is the same as on my ATRIX. I can text and read and listen to voicemails.

what SMS client to I install to my tablet?
So the app can send sms, eh - that somehow worries me.
I just use google talk on my tablet to get the messages and you can respond through gtalk also

Nothing is install on the tablet, it forward your sms to Google Talk.
It work for me at first but now it does not forward amy sms to my google talk.
It does sync with my Chrome extension
mine still works, I also have the google talk desktop program and get it through there too
So if i use google voice there's no reason to use this right?
nope..not really
edit: as long as you sideload google voice onto the tablet

Yeah, it is very beautiful. As of now, it is basically like a really cool ui update of Google Talk.
---------- Post added at 09:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:37 PM ----------
And updated Google+ is now live too
No contact status? No contact list that reorders based on contact status?
I rolled it back to Talk for now. I can't really stand having a huge list of everyone to whom I've ever written a Gmail. Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Thanks for telling us!
I have no ideia of this "update"
I can't see the big differences from the old app.
Can you send photos and videos or files with it like whatsapp? I haven't found a way to do it.
Furthermore I can't add a photo to my chat profile without having to add it to Google +.
And my contacts that I have pictures of in my contact book are shown without pictures in the chat since they haven't got a picture on Google+.
So far I am a little bit disappointed with these issues and whatsapp will unfortunately still be a more preferable way for me to send messages for a while longer.

Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!" - From Google
I got it working when it released yesterday. I was having the same problem with it opening to Gtalk.
All I did was used TiBu to wipe data and uninstall Gtalk. I then went to the play store and installed it.

I wonder if we would have to wait until the makers of SMS backup and restore update to support it. If they do. (I hope so...that's one of the most used apps on my phone.)
Also I was wondering how now works the backup&restore SMS apps...
I've more than 5000 SMS witht he stock SMS app on my Galaxy Nexus, always backed up and restored when wiping, changing ROm etc... now with Hangouts how works?
I've messaged the SMS Backup & Restore developers so hopefully they'll be looking into it.

I'm in the same boat: created a backup on old 4.3 phone with the new SMS Backup and Restore app, restored it on Nexus 5 (again with the new version of SMS Backup and Restore) but I see no messages in Hangouts. Definitely had SMS B+R set as the default SMS app during the restore.

Forget my previous post - just worked out how to force Hangouts to see the new messages.
The key step is to open Hangouts while SMS B+R is set as the default SMS app. This forces it to remove any SMS threads it knows about. Exit the app, set Hangouts as default again, and reopen it - it will refresh its thread list.
Hooray!
I will be upgrading to the Nexus 5 from an iPhone 4.
Is there any way to port over all my old SMS?
I have heard before that HTC had a way of bringing all that data from an Apple phone.

The only issue with this method is that you lose any messages that you've received before restoring as Hangouts must make it's own database that's separate to the mmssms.db.

Can you please explain better for who has a lower knowing of english language, please? XD
I managed to get Hangouts to see my restored SMSes, and thankfully it's really easy to do and doesn't require any other apps or updates to work. After restoring you SMSes, go into Hangouts and then into settings and turn SMS off. This will remove all SMS threads from Hangouts (but they will still be on your phone and accessible using other SMS apps). Close Hangouts then open it again and turn SMS back on, and it will find all the SMS threads on your phone, including those that were restored from a backup. Easy!
Note: this was on a HTC One where Hangouts isn't the default SMS app, I presume disabling SMS in Hangouts won't delete all your SMS threads permanently on a Nexus 5 but exercise some caution until someone confirms that this works fine on a Nexus 5.
I'm also thinking maybe a good plan would be to install a 3rd-party SMS client in order to monitor what has actually been placed into SMS storage or not. Now SMS is a nice clean-looking client. If you have any existing SMS on your device already before restoring from your old device, install an extra client and switch that to the default. See if your messages appear in that client. If not, disable SMS in Hangouts and check again.

Good to know. I used to use mysms but I found it to have a lot of odd behaviours. Sometimes it would stop syncing, and then if I forced it to resync, it would proceed to destroy all the date stamps on my message history for about 20 minutes while it rifled through them. Usually everything went back to normal eventually, but it was really disruptive.

I will be upgrading to the Nexus 5 from an iPhone 4.
Is there any way to port over all my old SMS?
I have heard before that HTC had a way of bringing all that data from an Apple phone.

Yes, there is. But it involves a jailbroken iphone, a linux pc/virtual, a shell script
I did when i moved from iphone to nexus4 (using a script found on github), but the timestamps were not kept
SMS Backup + from the store works great plus it restores call logs too. I haven't used it going from one phone to another but i can't see why it wouldn't work.

[Q] How to change the default SMS app to ChompSMS?

I've installed ChompSMS, but when I go into Settings - Wireless & Networks - Default SMS app - only Hangouts is listed. I've tried rebooting the phone, but still nothing. Does ChompSMS need to be updated so it'll show up on this list? Is there another way to make it the default app?
Thanks!

I got this problem too :silly:
It needs updating with 4.4 support.

What he said lol.
There are particular parameters that an app has to have in 4.4 for Hangouts to recognise it as an SMS app.
What the others said.
Long-winded answer:
Basically, before 4.4, there was no such thing as an "SMS app" on Android. Apps like ChompSMS didn't actually directly receive and process SMSes. They listened for SMS received events and intercepted the SMS message as it went into the default SMS app. This was an incredibly hacky method, would cause weird issues (like you'd get notifications from two SMS apps), and wasn't at all supported officially by Google.
Now in 4.4, they added the ability for apps to act as proper replacements for SMS. But they must stop using the old APIs/intents and use the new 4.4 APIs to do this. If/when the app developer does this, then you'll see it as an option.
I have the same issue you too and have been unable to find any SMS 'app' that can be set as the default.... Anyone have any success?
I've tried - Chomp, Now and Textra and none are 'selectable'!
Thanks.

This is what you need:

Works flawlessly.
I emailed the developer last week and got a reply to say a fixed version would be out this week. It's not out at the time of writing this post, but on the Google Play website someone gave it a 1 star review for not working on the Nexus 5 and one of the devs replied to say "It's fixed. Please email us with the subject line NOT FAQ." Maybe they are sending people an APK if they email them?

8sms absolutely does work, make sure you have the most updated version from the Play Store and then go to Settings>More... (under Wireless & Networks), then tap Default SMS app and change to 'Messaging', which is 8sms. Could not recommend this app higher.
I just got a reply from the developer. They are supposedly releasing a version that's compatible with the Nexus 5/Android 4.4 today. They also linked me to a beta version that works, although I haven't tested it: -

Thanks for the link! Working great on my Nexus 5 now. This is version 5.89, the version on the Play Store was released Nov 12 and is v5.88.
Chomp user here too, though when I installed the beta it didn't seem to have notifications turned on by default, so I missed a few texts. Worth checking if you install it.
Version 5.89 has been released to the Play Store, has KitKat compatibility.

Verizon Visual Voicemail Missing After Root and S-OFF

Hello All,
I am having some trouble after I have no rooted and S-Off my M8. Everything else is perfect and I love my phone more than ever, but now when I go to the messages and scroll right, my VVM is gone and I also lost the app for it as well. Strange enough, it still shows in my Titanium backup list but the "service" is missing. I did uninstall some bloatware and languages but definitely not the service. Anyone know how to get it back or where I could find the APK? I would appreciate the help!

Ok, which messaging app are you using, stock or the verizon messaging app? Also, did you uninstall any Verizon apps, and if so, which ones?

I am using the stock messaging app. I Uninstaller the vzw messaging app, NFL network, Polaris, Verizon tones, Verizon mobile security, Navigator, cloud, accessories, isis, support and protection, infozone. Also installed all keyboard language packs except for Spanish and English.

Probably has something to do with the Verizon apps you uninstalled. Happened to me too but with the regular voice mail app. When I try to open a it, it force closes. Even when I try to access it via messages on the right.
Only way to go to voice mail now is by dialing my number

I think you may be right. I'm a little stumped now, other than OP flashing a stock ROM again. To the OP, you might want to try a stock/debloated ROM, which you can find here. I would recommend SKYFALL or Bonestock, both great ROM's, and Verizon Visual Voicemail should work just fine. Hope that helps you!
So no one had the apk or service zip to correct this?

Usually is tied to messaging. I would be surprised if that was it. If you haven't heard it before...switch to Google voice for voicemail!

Yeah, I tried Google voice but it was a nightmare trying to set it up on a VZW device. I swear, if it wasnt for their reception I would leave them so fast.

It says " Unfortunately your network carrier is currently not supported for automatic voicemail configuration." When I try to set it up. I tried to follow the manual steps but no joy. Mind sharing how you set it up on your m8?

OK... so the first time setup I usually do from a PC while logged into google voice. There's a first time setup page there that tells you to complete a step you would likely miss otherwise. From memory... you have to enter *71 [Your GV #] and hit send on your phone. This sets up the voice mail forwarding for no answer/busy. You then open and install the google voice app and open it. ?It will ask you to login and then you hit next. I chose the option to NOT use google voice to make any calls. Click next on the setup voicemail page (you will get the unfortunately error. Hit configure. Select google voice. Hit OK on the carrier configuration prompt.
If you land at the voicemail settings screen (which is under phone settings->call) you want to see the voice mail service set to Google voice and when you click on the Voicemail Settings for google voice there you should see your google voice number there. After that, go back to the google voice app and it will sync your new mail box. Make a test voicemail call from a different phone and see what happens.
Hardest thing is getting the forwarding number setup on each phone which only needs to happen one time.... regardless of swapping phones. After that you will only ever need to run through the app setup
Try installing this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721582
Turns out it was extreme power saving mode that broke it.
