[Q] Off contract Insurance question (Sprint) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lets say I buy the 32 GB Nexus 5 from the play store (because Sprint is only offering the 16GB version). Somewhere down the line I lose the phone, or it quits working so I put in a claim for a replacement with Sprint's insurance. Are they going to send me a new/refurbished 32GB model or am I going to get the 16GB version? My guess is they send me the 16GB version thereby defeating the purpose of buying the 32GB Nexus from the play store. Anybody have experience with this issue?

Sounds like you should ask Sprint

HAHA...yes.....good idea. Should have mentioned I already had asked them. In fact I asked 3 different Sprint reps and one on Chat. They all referred me to Asurion (their insurance provider) After 5 minutes of playing "lets push a button" the insurance rep told me they would replace it with a 32GB version IF THEY HAD IT IN STOCK. And if not in stock, which she advised would be the likely scenario, then they would offer me the 16Gb version. That is just not acceptable so it looks like no Nexus 5 for me. Incidentally, the Sprint reps all told me they have NO information on a Sprint 32GB version. Hard to believe since that version seems to be the most popular on Google Play store

I have this same concern. It's probably best to drop the Sprint insurance and go with a 3rd party (SquareTrade, etc.). They won't cover theft/loss, but in just about any other way, they are superior. Currently, I have Sprint insruance on my Note 2, but I think I will drop it in favor of a thrid party solution. After all, I believe the decutible on Asurion is $200? So it's barely worth covering with them anyways. After a year, you would have enough to buy the phone again anyways (($10/month x 12 month) + $200 ded = $320).

Squaretrade looks to be $125 for 2 years which would be $5.20ish a month for 24 months.
I may go this route....

Look around for the best deal. SquareTrade often has coupons for 30% off. I'm blanking on some of the other companies available.

Me: I have one more question
Me: How would TEP (Total Equipment Protection) work for this device as I purchased it from Google Play instead of Sprint?
Steven B.: You can add TEP once the device will be activated, just like other regular devices.
Me: but, as this device is a 32gb device, if it were to malfunction, would it be replaced with a 32gb device, or would it be replaced with a 16gb device?
Steven B.: With the same device.
Me: even though Sprint does not sell that device?
Steven B.: You would have to wait until it's in stock.
Me: So Sprint does intend to sell the 32gb Nexus 5 sometime soon?
Steven B.: In the near future yes.
Me: Thank you very much for answering my questions! I hope you have a great night.

Is this without a contract? They're $299 with a contract.

Not such a great deal when you consider the contract part of it, I think. They've got you for two years at probably $70+/month ($1680 at least). And during those two years, if you want to upgrade, they'll probably make you sign a new contract AND pay the new contract price (if they even let you upgrade). Sounds like a raw deal to me.
I'll take my $670 upfront cost, no contract and $30/month plan anyday. Next year, if I want a new phone, I sell this one for $450, get whatever new phone I want, and never even have to consider my carrier as an obstacle.
Just my $.02.

I pre-ordered mine on Negrielectronics. I used a coupon for $20 off (sorry, that coupon is no longer valid, but there are others that are still good), and Negri's price was already cheaper than T-Mobile's. Plus no tax and shipping. Ended up saving $100 over T-Mobile's off-contract price.
They still haven't shipped their devices, but for $100 in savings, I can wait a few days extra. And of course, having no contract is the icing on top.
I bought mine at a Cambodian store made in vietnam class b with 1 year warranty 32gb white no region lock tried with thai simcard all ok and cambodian sim all fine tried my roaming philippine line still workin. Costed me 696$

Thanks. I'm close to pulling the trigger on one. I use RedPocket and do not want to pay ATT for even one month as required on their no contract price.

Well, if you wait a couple of weeks, they'll probably start showing up on Swapp (XDA Marketplace) once the 14-day return window has passed. People might change their minds and list them for sale.

Thanks for the heads up. Now trying to sort thru the different models (carrier differences) and prices. I used to think the Tmo and ATT hardware were the same. I'm not so sure anymore. The ATT flavor is $55 more expensive on Ngri. It also appears the 64GB model is not available anywhere that I've seen. Don't know how important the memory issue is since an SD card can be added.... Since I use an ATT MVNO I have to be sure about compatibility. Is there really a difference in the 4g freqs ?

This thread on XDA seems to suggest that both the T-Mobile and AT&T versions support the exact same frequencies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2464498
I've noticed the difference in price as well, and it is considerable. I'm not sure why the T-Mobile version is cheaper than the others. Negri buys theirs directly from T-Mobile, so it could just be that they are getting a better deal from T-Mobile than the other carriers.
As for the storage, 32GB is pretty decent to start with. I've seen that that translates to about 25GB of user accessible storage out of the box. And yes, most people have MicroSD cards already, and 32GB cards are pretty cheap these days (I bout mine for $20 last year). Someone also just posted a link in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466753) to a 128GB MicroSD card. Of course, the price is ridiculous, so I don't see many people buying that.

Will N5 be available at BestBuy?

Hello everyone,
just a curiosity question: as most of us know that google sell some of its products at bestbuy (chromecast, nexus 7 tablets, chromebooks, etc)
I wonder does anyone know that Nexus 5 will be available at Best Buy too?
Thanks!
I work currently at Best Buy and have heard/seen nothing about it unfortunately, the mobile section works a little different than the rest of the store, they don't sell non contract phones so it would be unlikely that they would sell the Nexus 5 unless AT&T officially carries the phone as well.

Dangg I don't like it..
i just wish i knew if it will work on sprint.. cause i have an upgrade now.. waiting to see if it gonna come to sprint
unfortunately i don't think the N5 will be sold through best buy. it would be cool to buy it through best buy so you don't have to wait weeks for Google to keep their inventory levels up( looking right at the N4)
As previous poster said that BB does not carrier non contract phones is correct, BUT it may be carried online.
But at this point I personally or anyone in my department (mobile) has heard anything about it being carried.
There's actually a decent chance best buy will sell the nexus line up. They are currently setting up some best buys with a "Google experience" sections similar too the Samsung mini stores.

Correction! Best Buy can sell you a phone without contract! On that note, Best Buy has sold the Nexus S(not just the Galaxy Nexus) in the past! If I had to guess, I would say Best Buy won't sell it. But it's possible, seeing as the Nexus 7 was!
I used to work for BestBuy/Geek Squad.
They stopped selling or at least offering off contract phones. They used to sell them. They don't make money/margin from them.
They want you on a contract/upgrade to get kickbacks from the carriers.
Off contract phones don't sell well enough in the US enough to warranty the limited space in their stores.
They have to have items that make margin to stay alive, so space is premium.
Now should they sell them online, mabey, but you won't see it in a retail store.
Yes you can buy sku outright, but it will not sell for the $349 price as google is subsidizing that directly through the play store.
Now this time around with the Google End cap, it is a possibility, but based on previous Nexus Releases and Googles decision to stick with the playstore. I doubt that would happen.

BB needs to either commit, or GTFO. I just bought a HP Chromebook, and BB was my first destination: 3-5 weeks and no store stock is what I was told. Went to Play store, available with 1-2 day shipping. Will be here tomorrow from Lexington Kentucky. I know BB has a huge warehouse on the left coast, where these Chromebooks originally entered the U.S., so I don't understand how BB screwed up the logistics, but they aren't serving their customers by vacillating on stock and supply.

As for Best Buy and the Nexus 5, My guess is unless google does a partnership with them they will not be getting the unlocked version, however might get a contract version with the top 3 carriers. I think we are all just waiting to see what Google does next.

Best Buy Mobile WILL sell you a phone without a contract as long as it doesn't seem to be fraud. If you tell them you're putting it on your plan, and let them log into your account(whatever provider it may be), they will allow you to buy it. They actually do make margin selling the phone off contract, but they don't accumulate revenue on the backend since there is no activation through a carrier.

Really? TEP is a total ripoff. 10 bucks a month PLUS a $150 deductible on the off chance that you actually have to use it. Seems like kind of a questionable reason to sell your awesome new phone, especially when you can get a brand new one for $350. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

well see i like having insurance on every smartphone i ever had.. i really dont care what insurance it is.. all i kno is TEP.. do i want to sell my new phone.. na not really.. just want insurance on it that all years ago my evo 4g got stolen paid 100$ they sent me a brandnew phone... so 10$ a month really dont bother me much.. what happens if something like that happens to my new phone.. im *****d
I'd never buy insurance on a $350 phone but I have Worth Ave Group insurance on my son's iphone.
Why not set the $150 aside and then put away $10/mo as insurance?? You'd reach the outright purchase price of the phone pretty quick if you ever ran in to problems. It can't possibly be that hard to set aside some reserve in case your phone dies.
Sell the phone, then pay $450 for the same phone from Sprint, they'll let you pay $11 per month for high deductible insurance.
$450 cost of phone
$150 deductible if you lose it once.
$11 per month x 24 ? = $264
Spigen has both cases and screen protectors. http://stores.ebay.com/spigensgp/
I don't buy any other.
The insurance industry is working on your mind, now that you need insurance.

You can't get tep only insurance for if its physically damaged or liquid damaged which is dumb. But I'm a technician for sprint so if your in northern Virginia I can try to help you the best I can. But it may change in the future I will let my higher ups know and get this addressed to try to help not only you but people with this phone cause I don't think its fair that if your speaker goes out that you would have to pay $53 or $75 once they change it for not having in store coverage which cannot be covered. I think with all the people I know I should be able to get something done I'll post back when I get something confirmed but rest assured I will get tep for this phone for everyone that wants it.
I activated my n5 today and they transfered my insurance no problem it actually went down to 8 a month instead of 11

The issue is the 32GB model, If you have the 16GB model you can get Sprint TEP on it, as I have it on mine and mine was bought from the play store, but anyone with the 32GB model will not be able to get Sprints TEP and will not be able to have sprint techs look at their phone in repair stores either, it's simply not supported. TEP is a ripoff. My credit card offers free coverage, as long as I pay my cell bill on it every month. $400 of coverage I believe, with something like a $50 deduct.

Forget the fact that you have insurance, how many times have you had to claim insurance in all the years you had the smartphone? I had TEP for my HTC Touch Pro for almost 1.5 years back in 2009/2010 and I only claimed it once. To me it was a rip off and this was when it was still $7/mo. At $11/mo currently it is even more of a rip off. To add insult to injury the Galaxy Nexus 5 is only $350 unlike the GS4 or iPhone 5S which are $650-$700.

[Q] Buying direct vs from t-mobile?

Hello, pretty rudimentary question, but: I am interested in getting a Nexus 5 because I hear the Nexus line gives you the least trouble among Android phones for installing custom ROMs and doing rooting and such. I am trying to decide whether to buy from Google vs from T-Mobile (my current carrier). Google has the phones available but says they take three weeks to ship. T-mobile sent me an email saying they now have them available; when I called them they said they had already sold out and so could not give me a price, but when in stock again they *might* be able to offer me a discount compared to Google's wholesale price.
Here's my question: T-mobile did say that if I ordered from them, the phone would be carrier-locked. They said they had the ability to unlock the phone "free of charge" (wondering if there's a catch there…). I honestly do not care if the phone is carrier-locked or not, but like I said I specifically am getting this phone in order to minimize nonsense when installing custom ROMs or OSes other than Android. Will buying a "locked" phone, or in general buying a phone from T-mobile rather than direct from Google, create any obstacles to mucking about with the phone's software? Is there some "correct" way to order the Nexus 5 (I know with HTC you have to order a special "developer version" from a separate page) other than just the Play link on the google.com/nexus5 page?
Thanks
I've been a long standing T-Mobile customer for years now. I had NO problems when I purchased my Nexus 5 from Google Play (was one of the first lucky ones). All you do is put your SIM card in the phone before you power it up. Its the new small (micro) SIM cards. I never needed to have my phone unlocked.
Don't you let anyone fool you on thinking its a different phone if you purchase it through T-Mobile instead of the Play Store. It's the same phone.

sent from my beantastic almost retired Bionic
It didn't take weeks to ship maybe two weeks for the black version. I ordered my nexus 5 November 13 and had it in my hands the 15th. Order the white 32gig if you want it fast. Otherwise pay 100$ for the same exact phone though T-Mobile.

Hah!
When I talked to T-mobile on the phone, one of the reps said they could probably get me a discount if I ordered through them, and the other one said it might cost more…
Maybe I'll just go ahead and order rather than wait around just to get a price that might well be higher anyway. Thanks y'all

just pre-ordered my v20 through t-mobile.

so exactly at 12 i called up t-mobile and pre-ordered my v20. the price of the phone is $769.99. i also took advantage of the free tablet offer. getting an LG G Pad X 8.0. looking forward to that. never really had a tablet. definitely going to root it and unlock it. in t-mobiles system they only had the titan color, which is what i wanted anyways. can't wait to finally have the phone in my hand....
X 8.0 is a decent tablet and you will love it.
It's rootable with dz and LGUP.
I will pay off and trade in my V10 for it.
Hmm.. I'm a bit too tired to call T-Mobile, but their website shows nothing thus far.
I'm still very hesitant.. I don't mind waiting a bit to see if LG will allow an official bootloader unlocker for the H915. But T-Mobile phones have been unlockable in the past. I don't know which one will see more developer action
If you log into MyT-Mobile you can order it. I actually ordered mine 10 minutes before Midnight PST
I ordered through the website this morning. I'm sort of curious since the website doesn't have it as pre-order and it's showing a ship date of 10-17 to 10-24 and the phone as in stock. So I'm cautiously optimistic that I could have this thing in hand this week.
Going to walk into the local dealer and order at 10am. Figure I've bugged them long enough that I should. Also going to take advantage of the phone trade-in. I see online that there are two tablets available. Is the one you listed the better of the two?
Ordered mine through T-Mobile as well!! It's expected to ship as early as today; can't wait. I didn't do the tablet because the customer service said you had to keep the data plan open for 2 years, which makes it a not free tablet since the plan is $10 per month. I'll get the headphones whenever the phone gets in, though, so that's a plus! Definitely looking forward to getting this now that my Note 7 is gone and I'm back to my Note Edge that has a bunch of dead pixels
Just a note on this, I ordered through the web then called the customer support because the shipping upgrade I did hadn't processed properly. The person on the phone said the phone is already backordered as of just a few minutes after I ordered and that any new orders from this point forward likely won't ship until early November.
Now I just need to find a solid case and buy the stylus!!

So much for the tablet. I don't use much of the tethering I already have. I don't need another data plan.
And that's not cool that they're already sold out. I was going to trade in my N6 and use my cracked Note 3 until this got here but I'm not willing to use the Note 3 that long. LG has made us wait long enough. They really should have had more stock in country than this.

Still worth a shot! You may order at the same time that someone else cancels an order! Plus, the phone customer service person seemed to have thought that it had been on backorder for several hours already, so maybe they sell from a different pot of phones than the web does. Look at buying on the web as that's what I did and got a ship out date of this week. Definitely worth it, IMO. I'm sitting on a Galaxy Note Edge that has several green lines running down the screen until I get this one, lol

Just realized my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a 4G phone that I can trade in. And hoping you're right about separate pots but that's not usually the case.

I wonder if they have additional stock coming in that is not accounted for.

Unaccounted for? Probably not. Sounds like the next ones don't hit the country until well into November. Someone said they were quoted 11/15-12/15. I've yet to order mine. Heading to the store here in a little bit to do it. LG really keeps dropping the ball on this one. They better hope rumors of something really awesome don't hit before the V20 ships.
T-Mobile stores will have them in stock on release day. The ones being shipped to you through pre-orders will not cut into the stores stock.
For those of you being quoted a November ship date, just walk into a T-Mobile store on release day.
So it looks like you do have to be careful about which 4G phone you try to trade in. They just use a database and if your phone isn't in it, too bad. My Galaxy Nexus didn't make the cut so I'll have to send them my Nexus 6 instead. And just to note, they only apply the actual trade in value. (In my case $60) You have to fill out some promotion that I can't seem to find and they (LG?) send you a check for the rest of the amount. So for me, that would be the other $140.

Curious as to when that is?
Reason I ask, call me a conspiracy theorist if you must. T-Mobile is facing a potential customer dip due to the Note 7 fiasco. What better way to avert potential customer base loss (device lease fees etc.)by getting the V20 out as quickly as possible, primarily before the Google Pixel hits the streets... Do they actually have them in stock, or are they baiting customers? Seems odd to completely skip the "preorder" phase and go straight to "In-Stock" and shipping 17-24 October...
I am actually one of those folks, preordered the Pixel XL on October 4th which should be here this week. However, now with the V20 available I still have time to cancel my Google order and pick up the LG.
So now I have both on order and "technically" should have both by the end of the week. As outlined though, I doubt the V20 ships to anyone this week... Of course I could be way off base, but think the V20 thing is a tad more than coincidental...

I think the backorder situation on both phones is driven by the Note 7 fiasco. People are grabbing for the next best phones available.
Other than the battery issue, I think both phones are a step down from the Note 7.
I too was told early to mid November for delivery while my order acknowledgement says this week. I guess it'll be here when it gets here.
I just spoke with T-Mobile help on twitter. They checked my order and confirmed the 10-17 to 10-24 shipping date was correct. They're probably trying to get these out as quick as possible due to the Note 7 recall and the massive iPhone 7 back-order. I paid for overnight shipping, so I'm hoping that it really does ship today. I'll update in this thread as soon as I get a tracking number.
I just orderer mine via phone. Shipping date 10/17 to 10/24. He did not give me overnight shipping, i dont know if it will be cause of any delay. I'll update u guys as soon as i get any.

I'm wondering if we can have it added afterwards. Regular shipping is ground shipping, 7 days. Which means it is possible you might not get the phone until after it hits stores if it ships towards the end of the window.
