Keeping my existing number - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently on sprint and the new phone is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I planned on trying out T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan and I want to port my number to it. The question I have though is what if hat service doesn't work out for me. And then I need to go to att or sprint or whatever other network this phone will work on. Do I just keep porting my number?
I would port the number to Google voice since it is currently integrated with sprint but the main reason I do not is then I will no longer receive MMS messages to my main number.

Google Voice does not integrate into Hangouts at all right now.
If you port your number to Google Voice, keep in mind you will need a new number issued to your phone, and any service you currently have on the phone will be cancelled (since carriers assume porting a number = cancelling service). I would seriously consider not using Google Voice right now, especially since T-Mobile offers unlimited text messaging anyway. If you need to use it, I recommend getting a new number for Google Voice, not porting your current number to it. Don't lock yourself into Google Voice, it's a mess right now and its future is murky.

i would highly recommend against pulling the trigger and porting your number right away. since you still have a working sprint line keep it. throw the tmobile sim card and activate. carry around the 2 phones for a month and see if tmobile is the way u want to go. If so, at the end of the month then contact tmobile and ask them to port your number over to the SIM you've been using if they can do it. if not, grab a new sim card and then port your number

Sprint integration vs. porting

If you integrate your sprint number to Google voice and then terminate you contract do you keep your number? If not, what if you wait and just leave after contract?

All integration is doing is replacing the standard vm with gv vm. That is if you're talking about sprint and gv. I don't know for a fact but that sounds logical. If you go to another carrier, and want to keep your phone number from original carrier, you have to go to the new carrier and tell them you want your old number on their service. Once they do what needs to be done, your service with the original company will be shut off. You do not need to do anything to make this happen with the original company. The original company will send you a final bill and you pay it. The porting process just takes a few minutes to go through and it's done. Your old number is on your new service.
Integration does a bit more than just replace VM. You're able to SMS from the GV site, app, chrome extension etc as well as receive calls from your sprint number on gmail.
Yep... I ported my number, but kept my default SMS app on my phone, but can still use GV on the web to text. So I can still get my MMS without hassle of forwarding to my email. Also I was under the impression that since its ported that you can't lose your number since its on google and not to the carrier. Myth? Thought I heard that on TWIT AAA. So even if you change carriers you could just set up your google voice no matter what your new phone number is since you can use your old one in its place. Make sense?

Well I understand the benefits of porting the number to GV but my question was is it any different than Sprint integration? Is it permanently ported or do I loose it if I break the contract and have to port that number before I change carriers?

I would call Sprint and ask them. Remember that you can receive SMS and MMS through the native app and still have your number integrated is a feature that someone "not" on Sprint has the ability to do.
Also you have 90 days to try your number integrated before you lose your old google voice number. So you can always go back.

Yeah. I can definitely ask sprint but chances are I'll get some moron who doesn't know anything or will lie to me just to get me off the phone.

SMS

Hoping someone has a solution to my scenario.
Right now, I have a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. I use my Verizon number for all calls and SMS. I'm test driving my Nexus 5 on GoPhone (AT&T) until my Verizon plan is up (at which point, I'll either stick with GoPhone if I like it, or find something else).
Is there a way for me right now to get my Verizon number's SMS to show up on my Nexus 5? Is there any app, etc.? I don't want to fart around with porting my Verizon number to Google Voice right now - I will do that when my contract is up, and that will be my solution. But I need a solution for until that point.
If there is no way to do this, that's okay. Thanks for reading. (For calls, I'm just going to forward my Verizon number to my AT&T number through Verizon's webpage).

Thank you for the suggestion. When I downloaded it on my Nexus 5, it told me "Integrated messages is only available for Verizon customers," so I think it's not gonna work. I think I'm just SOL until I port my Verizon number to Google Voice.

I have seen those. I'll probably set one of those up. I was really hoping for an app that would allow me to receive SMS on my Verizon phone, and send as my Verizon number from my Nexus 5. Guess we're not there yet, without the Google Voice port. Again, thanks for your responses!

Google voice is great. Just do it.
Only issue is you can't currently receive MMS through it.
I use GV + straight talk prepaid
It's cool too because you will be able to keep your old number and receive all your calls to it too

Google voice and sprint integration with $30 t-mobile plan

Hi there,
I currently have Sprint service. I have a google voice number as well.
I did not integrate my sprint number to Google voice. I simply use my Google voice number as a "spam" number. I give it out to strangers and companies so when I get a call on my cell phone it sites Google voice number and I know it's technically spam.
I understand I can replace my Google voice number with my sprint number AND if I pay $20... I can keep both numbers (so people could still call either number and it would come to me).
My question is... What is the correct way to port over to T-Mobile?
I was reading about people who's Google vice numbers died because of how they tried to port.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just sign up with tmobile and have them port the number. Your GV number won't be affected.

As the first step do i port my sprint number to google voice and then port my sprint number to tmobile?
I don't think it's as easy as you broke it down (but i could be wrong)

Right now you have two phone numbers. One for Sprint, one for Voice.
Sprint # has to be used with Sprint service.
Voice # goes with you to any device you want to setup with it.
DO NOT port your Sprint # to Voice. Just have T-Mobile port over your Sprint #.
You will then have a T-Mo # and a Voice # and be in the same boat as before, just with T-Mo providing the service.

Exactly this. Porting is a simple process. You'll need to provice your Sprint account number and account PIN to T-Mobile. Porting your Sprint number out to T-Mobile will immediately disconnect your Sprint service, so be prepared for that.

Testing out T-Mobile

I just got my SIM today and am ready to give T-Mobile a try. I still have my contract with Sprint so I'm a little unsure how to get this set up so that I can really try the network. I assume since my Sprint account is active I cannot port my number to T-Mobile. So how exactly would I go about testing the network for the phone side of things. Data I can test myself anytime. I don't want to have everyone I know change their contact info for me for it only to last a month or less if I don't like T-Mobile. I have Google Voice and have the Google Voice number as my current number. Will I get texts/voicemails through the app for my Sprint number? Can I port the number later if I want or do I have to get another SIM to do that?
When I was testing out T Mobile I set my sprint number as my Google Voice number. Sprint is the only carrier that I know that allows my mobile number to be my Google Voice number. You could test it out this way and then switch back. The only downside that I had was mms. Your sprint phone will be able to handle it but the T Mobile one won't.

Activate the t-mobile sim with a new # and use your sprint # as your Google voice number, like the guy above said . When someone calls or texts your sprint # you can have it ring to the t-mobile #. Then if you want to keep t-mobile you can port your # over at any time, just make sure the Sprint line is still active when you port

Okay so I got the SIM in, went online and set up an account, put money on the plan,.... got no signal???? Can't reach anyone through their chat either and this is the only phone in the house :crying:
Edit: Contacted T-Mobile with the Sprint SIM and had them refresh everything on the T-Mobile SIM. Everything works after that.

activating phone from an upgrade not yours

quick question... my scenario is that I used my wifes upgrade to get the m8 and phone just came in today. She is taking my s4. Do I need to first activate it under her account and then do the switch or can I just go online and activate it directly under my account? We have two separate accounts. Just seems tedious to have to first activate it on her account and then do the switch. THanks!

You should call Verizon and see if they can activate it to yours, but you're probably going to need to go into a store to get a SIM card that is provisioned for your account. The SIM is what matters and what they sent you is probably set up for her line.
If you have a micro SIM you can just pop yours in and be fine. But I don't know if the s4 uses the same size SIM card.

i do this all the time with work. You can call them and authorize the device to be switched to your account without activating it on her line. You will have to be an admin on the her account or have someone on the line who is.

I did the same thing as you, i just called in Verizon and they switched it over without activating the new M8 on my sister's line.

thanks! did your sister need to be there or did they just activate this on your account? I just spole with a rep and they said since it's on two different accounts the phone needs to be active on her account for 24 hours before i switch. is that true?
There's no magic in the SIM. You simply need the SIM number tied to your phone number. You can switch the SIM the same as you could switch the IMEI on older phones. The website walks you through it if you choose activate or switch device.
Assuming you're trying to keep your unlimited data, I would do it in the below order.
Activate the device on her account when you get it.
Log into her account and switch her old phone back on the line.
Log into your account and put the M8 and SIM on your line.
Take her SIM from the old phone and plug it into the GS4. If her old SIM is not a micro sim, simply go through the switch process again with your S4 and SIM.
You should be able to do all of the above as quickly as you can click through the website.
got it to work... just called back CS and got someone competent on the phone. They did the switch and all is well. THanks for the help fellas!
I wouldn't imagine there'd be any need to call CS, just pop your SIM into the new phone (assuming it's a nano SIM (or you can cut it down)) and turn it on. The only thing that needs activating via CS is the new nano SIM that comes inside the M8, if you're using your original SIM then there shouldn't be anything to call CS about.
The above only applies if both phones and lines are using LTE phones with SIM cards, if they're still on 3G phones with no SIM, then you'll need CS to switch lines and phones around.
Your must activate it first on the upgrade plan, if you don't you will lose your plan. My wife did our wrong when she got her motox.

Yeah I did the same thing..
I got on a separate phone from any phone on my account and called the activation line went through it and the options lead you to a choice of activating the new phone/sim with a line other than the one the renewal was used on. At that point I had to talk to a customer service person and it was a piece of cake. They did try and sell me insurance again.
