I'm wondering if it's possible to dual boot Windows Phone 7 and Android on Nexus S? It's been done on HD2. Just wondering why it hasn't been done for Nexus S. (unless if it's the sd card thing).
Wrong section!
I do know of ubuntu on the nexus s, but idk about win7 on it LOL.
And it makes sense with win7 put on the hd2 since its a windows phone lol
But yeah, you need to move this to q and a ;D

It is really impractical for one thing. The hd2 was a windows mobile device with a completely different bootloader. I believe they were able to use a modified bootloader to do it. We would need to somehow port over the bootloader from the Samsung focus. Unfortunately modifying bootloaders is very dangerous. If it doesn't work you brick. We would brick a lot of devices. So with the price we pay for the bricked phones we might as well buy a Samsung focus.

Wrong section perhaps for such a question?
The basic approach, or concept if you may, in my opinion, is completely opposite.
Like comparing apples to oranges.
HD2 is a Windows Phone to which Android was ported for dual-boot.
Where as, Nexus S is an Android phone and to port Windows Phone 7 to it would be an entirely different ball game.
Even to try dual booting.
Doubt if it'd be a worthwhile effort.
One can never really say.
Probably a far better idea to try and port Android to the Samsung Focus than do Phone 7 on the Nexus S.
As soon as you can talk Microsoft into open-sourcing the WP7 platform it will be done. The main reason Android was ported to the HD2 is because Android is open source and it made it possible.

This idea has been proposed before on XDA for another phone, and the thread was shut down due to it being illegal.

First of all sorry for my bad english.
Can you provide any information about port ubuntu in nexus s. Where is the progress and what can this serve?
If you want this thread to stay you really need to move it or a mod will close it.

I dont think there is dev enough to do that, and i think we need the SD card to Dual boot. Bot maybe its possible to port WP7, but we need a dev that want to work on it.
But hey! Its sound awesome to have WP7 on NS, is miss it alot from my old HD2 (sold now )
Yes it is possible.

It's possible if it is not on XDA. it is illegal and considered piracy as WP7 is closed source, android is open source software so you can modify.

You just have to clap your hands and say "I DO believe in WP7..."
I don't think that's ever the nexus s will have WP7.
All WP7 devices has the same hardware, the Snapdragon CPU, same RAM etc..
The Omnia 7 also as well.
The new Mango update fully supports the Nexus S hardware, but I doubt it will be available for a number of reasons, the 2 best reasons being:
1: It's closed source
2: Unless we got an unbrickable thing like the captivate, I doubt we would come far anyway, or at least we would need many Nexus S devices.
Thank you all for the input. Since WP7 is locked, maybe there's a rom that mimicks the WP7 platform?
I've looked on other threads and have seen that some phones have three diffrent topics, winmo6.5 , win7, and android development threads my question is there a way to make a win 7 Rom for the inspire?

No...and why would you want that? Lol
I've seen some win 7 themes but that's about it.
I got your 10 char right here

You're more than welcome to give it a shot. But the point you are missing is that windows phone is inferior to android. The Devs already know what windows phone is all about. That is why they did not waste their time to port it. Not to mention it is not open source. Porting it violates copyright infringements. If you really want to explore that OS then go buy one and you will soon return to android.

first if its a copyright infringement how do they have the right to port it at all, even if a device comes with it any modifications to their coding would fall as an infringment i think, and they have ported it for phones like the htc tilt2 witch comes stock with winmo6.1 i think but theres a thread for windows 7 over there, the question is can it be done weather or not i go back to android has no matter to the question i asked.

No it cant be done. The reason it was dont on the phons you mentioned is due to being WM phones to start with. Android running on them is a hack to run off a partition setup.
Technically I don't think they had the right to port it on the older windows mobile phones like the tilt2 or the HD2. Windows mobile and windows phone are 2 totally separate operating systems. I am no expert on this though. But it was the excitement of the moment back then and on those forums it was allowed.
Please understand that XDA operates in alot of grey areas. Microsoft knows what is done here and if asked we will pull anything as we have done before when they have asked.
With the UnBrickable Mod?
I read that webOs was ported to the Evo, and many mobile Os can be flashed on the HD2.
So, is possible to see other mobile Operating systems on our smartphone?
Share your experience, i wanna know about the incredible world of mobile operating systems

Far from it. The reason we'll probably never see webos or wp7 on the nexus s is that neither of those os's are fully open source like android, in fact wp7 is completely closed source.
webOS was ported to the Evo 3D but virtually nothing worked from what I remember, making it far from useful, useable, or anything past booting really.
Ios - Never been ported to anything non-apple (as far as I know).
Meego - Possible I guess, but I dont know why anyone would bother putting that amount of time into it.
WebOS - Looking possible, its going open source i hear, but the nexus S community is only going to decrease due to the release of the Galaxy Nexus
Windows Mobile - Dead
Windows Phone 7 - This was ported to the HD2 as the HD2 was used as a test phone for the OS and the drivers got leaked! Microsoft used it as it was a high spec Windows Mobile phone. (It got android as it was very similar to other HTC phones that ran Android, such as the N1 and Desire)
Ubuntu - I guess, probably wouldn't be too hard to get going, why anyone would want to I have no idea.
BB OS - hahaha...
so.... no interest.

I realize this isn't what you're looking for, but if you're just interested in emulating the WP7 look, give Launcher7 from the market a try. I'd also recommend using the Ubermusic music player with the optional metro theme.

So now we have to decide what will be our daily drive Ubuntu for Phones or our Android OS..?
Already here we have the first beta ports of Ubuntu for Phones for our Nexus S..
Tell me what you think..
Ubuntu as soon as it becomes stable and smooth! But only the full version of course, the demo is nice for a...... demo..... I guess!!

I know that Ubuntu for phones is on development on the Nexus S.. that's why I made the post in the first place to find out the obvious.... ;p lol.. everyone will run Ubuntu when the Full release is out..
Ubuntu R' Us
I concur. If and when Ubuntu Mobile becomes stable enough, I would also make the migration to Ubuntu. Android is so last year's OS
I prefer android
Don't see why I would run a computer OS with a touch interface on top on my mobile device. I'd rather use an OS made for mobile from the start...
Honestly don't really give a dime about running computer programs on my phone.
When you don't have a notebook and you're on vacation or so you could use the hotel TV and your phone as a full computer. Makes sense to me..

Doesn't seem like it would be the most common thing to happen to the most of us, though.
The Nexus S is already under-powered enough I can't see it lasting very much longer, even less so running a computer OS with any sort of decent fluidity/usability.

Sure, whatever, but not on this phone. It's not going to revolutionize anything on a phone you can't connect to a monitor/TV and that is already having difficulties running Jellybean...

Who said it was on top? You have reading comprehension issues. Jellybean already runs roughly enough on the Nexus S. There's no difference between a Linux distro and Android you know, except the later is greatly optimized to run on phones/tablets.
Besides, other than for Android, please point me to an example where Linux has even a remotely great market share with end users. Surprise, it doesn't! Even with Ubuntu being the latest fad for people wanting to pickup on Linux, it's still a tiny shard in the ocean of Windows and Mac OSX.
when it receives Android apps support, the first thing i would do is to get rid of Android and flash in Ubuntu. Until then, I would say android is my choice.

Who cares if it's still a tiny shard, people want option and it's nice that we have distro's like Ubuntu and FirefoxOS that you can install on Android smartphones. I think the majority of people willing to try this out want something different for a change.. Maybe people don't care about mainstream operating systems anymore, maybe they want something less-mainstream that stands out from the crowd.
Exactly as the subject says, can a custom ROM be created that would allow the N5 to dual boot Android and Windows 8.1? This would blow my mind from an enterprise perspective. Essentially a Transformer Book Duet in our hands.
Feel free to bring me crashing back to reality if this is in no way possible lol.

It will be nearly impossible to do so since Windows is not open source. Meaning a Dev will have to reconstruct everything from scratch to get it to work. It will never be bug free or fully functional. Although it would be nice to have other OS options just for bragging rights.

nexus 5 has an ARM cpu
closest thing that works on ARM cpus in the Windows RT... but good luck with the drivers and other stuff
there are new phones coming out with the Intel Clover Trail/Bay Trail architecture. these are fully x86/x64-compatible chips.... maybe someone would be able to load windows on those... then you run into the problem of having the radio modem work in windows and other stuff
Well @Cotulla sort of made it happen for the HD2 in this thread. It wasn't Windows 8.1, but it was WPH. I think that's a pretty good start.
He's also been working with the HTC One to get Windows RT or WP8 working (here), which is pretty sweet. I'm not sure how much he could help with the Nexus 5, though, since I don't think he has one.
might as well buy a windows phone
Bringing this back from the dead --- I definitely meant Windows Phone 8.1, not the desktop client.
I'm planning on buying a Windows Phone at the end of the year (waiting for the mythical McLaren phone), but I was kind of hoping I'd be able to do something crazy and try loading Windows on this beast. it certainly has the specs for it, although I admittedly have no clue as to how difficult it would be (didn't take into account the on-screen buttons, etc).
I can dream though!

The HTC HD2 was a Windows phone and he brought Android to it. Since Android is open source it's much easier to port Android to Windows devices than Windows to Android devices.
I have a very clear and scientific answer to this.....no.
Plus...if it were possible, the windows OS would be warez....and we don't talk about such things on XDA. ?
Yeah, licensing fees from Microsoft anyways lol
There is nothing in the Terms of use about using Windows Phone on other hardware, nor is there a licence agreement to adhere to or a purchasable licence for the OS - so I wouldn't necessarily say Windows Phone would be Warez
That said it's still nigh-on impossible.
