I got my Inspire on release day at 11:00am when BB opened and by 3pm i ran the ace hack kit and it was rooted and had a DHD ROM flashed on the phone. For the first week there was not a whole lot of ROM's or options, but week 2 and 3, they popped up like a bag of popcorn.
The first set of ROM's and kernels (Desire HD ROM's) left people with dingy sound, no you-tube or any video support at all for that matter. Other people experienced Wi-Fi problems as well. Different fixes and patches came out fixing most problems, except sound seems to be the biggest headache trying to find the right combination of audio settings, drivers, etc.
My favorite ROM was CoreDroid, basically because the theme is beautiful, but no matter what radio/kernel I used It took literally 15 minutes to get a satellite lock. I tried faster fix from the market, I went into the system to make sure it was set to North-America and not Europe nothing worked.
Android Revolution is another awesome ROM, however, I had Wi-Fi issues. "Obtaining IP Address" is as far as it would get before finally disconnecting. Once again I flashed different radios and kernels and still no go.
What I finally kept is the Stock ROM Optimized Rooted and to make this ROM super responsive I used LeeDroid's 1.8Ghz Kernel. I use SetCPU and keep it at 1.267Mhz. (1.6Mhz when playing games or multitasking. Never locked up) I can open my app drawer and give it one flick, and i can watch 90 apps zoom by in less then a second with no hesitation ever. It's very fast, very smooth, no force closes, Gps hits 9 satellites in less then 15 seconds we have full lock, mobile data is 3.8 down, 2.2 up (average) bluetooth file transfer works, and voice activated dialing, sound is perfect, and for people looking to tether, just get wireless tether from the market. It does Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I tethered to my playstation 3 just to see how well it would do a HD netflix stream, and it was flawless. Never had to stop to buffer.
I'm also on the stock radio which is 06.04.06_m, Everything is so smooth and perfect I see no need to change until AT&T releases there version of gingerbread and it has ROOT access. The problems I have had with different ROM's are isolated and doesn't mean your going to have the same problem. It's weird but that's how it works. 2 exact phones, both running same setup, can have 2 totally different problems. Just the way it is in Flashing Land.
I'm no Pro, just giving my opinion and facts with my particular unit. The different ROM's seems to be like the captivate. You gain something, you lose something.
Super Circle Battery Icon works great as well. Get it here
3/16/2011 - Version 2 flashed without a glitch. Wireless, Gps, mobile data, all work as well or better. I also flashed LeeDroid's 2.2. 6 o/c kernel and everything is dead on. Great Job
That's all I want to do it root it, increase the volume and get wifi tether working. Right now if you want to not have any drivers issues it seems like the current on the phone works best Thanks for the info!
I also wanted to increase the cpu speed, did you take much of a hit on the battery?

Not at all, it last all day. Put SetCPU on "ondemand" and when I'm not using phone for awhile I simply type *#*#4636#*#* and set is to GSM only and that's another way to save a lot of battery. I also use a app called easy switch where I can turn off mobile data completely when not in use. I have awesome battery life.
i've been using the cm7 nightlies. i don't particularly enjoy htc sense and rather prefer the aosp style android.
I too am loving the Stock ROM Optimized-Rooted-etc. I've only tried it and a build of CM7, which seemed not quite as smooth as the aforementioned ROM. Additionally, whenever I played the game Rush Hour and got a perfect score, it would always force close [not a problem with the stock-optimized ROM].
I am considering trying LeeDroid's kernel on top of Stock-optimized ROM to boost performance a little more, but I'm a little unsure about the process. Do I just copy his kernel to my sd card and then flash it in CWM Recovery using the "install zip from sdcard" command? I assume a similar technique is used to install the super circle battery mentioned in the OP?
I don't see RCMix HD in the OP. I've been using 3.4 and it's solid. If you look at the thread there's hardly any complaints.
Great write-up. I've been thinking about starting a thread asking developers/users to give a quick description of popular ROMs and go over the pros/cons. It's kind of difficult to sift through 200+ pages of discussions about each ROM and get a clear idea what it's like. Thanks for throwing your 2 cents in. I've been happy with the stock rooted ROM, but I've thought about trying out a couple of others, maybe Revolution, if anyone wants to through 2 more cents into the pot.

I really like the Stock Rom Optimized Rooted as well. I'm not getting as high upload speed as you are, but about 4 times higher than I was getting out of the box. And everything is very smooth onscreen as you mention.
I like Hybrid1.72.zip battery icon with it.
I haven't tried overclocking yet, but after reading your post, that is my next project!

Im building a rom/kernel now based off stock Rom and compiling kernel from inspire source. Already got the extended power menu done, hopefully it'll be out in a few days. Not sure if the kernel will be done or not but hopefully I can get it out at the same time as the Rom.
+1 for Optimized Stock Rom. I liked Android Revolution, but my Inspire would take 10-15 minutes to get a GPS lock. With OSR, I get lock in 15-30 seconds. No downside to this ROM at all for me!

I also still use one of your Roms and will without fail try one in the Inspire when you finish cooking!
Right now I'm undecided and switching between Revolution 4 Beta 2 Gingerbread and twopumpchump's Stock optimized with LeeDroid kernel. I'm getting better download speeds with the latter option but both are exceptionally good roms.

Any chance Call Record will work in the Inspire as it does in some of your other roms?
Have you tried the gingerbread test radio?
I recently rooted my Mytouch 4G Slide (s-off) and have been trying out several roms, my favorite of which are: Blue6IX's Bulletproof rom, Virtuous Primadonna, and Virtuous Inquisition. I like all of these, since each have their benefits over the other. Bulletproof is more solid and maintains the ability to use all stock features, most importantly the camera. The Virtuous roms are both visually more exciting (Inquisition is an ICS style rom), BUT the camera crashes if you even try certain camera features or some random things fail like trying to send a photo via text. All those pros and cons aside, the main feature keeping me on Virtuous Inquisition is the overclock kernel. It overclocks up to 1.7Ghz, and that's damn cool if you ask me.
Since the Virtuous roms have so many issues, I want to be able to use a rom like Bulletproof and still be able to overclock it. I looked all over this forum for overclock info/kernels and found just 2 threads. One was an older one by Romanbb called Kanged (still available for download), the other was from Blue6IX including several variations of kernels (but none of the download links exist anymore).
Then I did some more research on the kernel used in the Inquisition rom. Everything I read pointed to a developer that, apparently, only has overclock kernels for the HTC Sensation (can't think of his name at the moment). This seemed a little strange that a kernel for a different phone would be compatible with mine.
So this is where I reached a dead end with even more questions than I started with:
Are overclock kernels specific to each device? In other words: if I found one for a Sensation or whatever, would I be able to use it with my MT4GS?
Since Romanbb's "Kanged" OC kernel seems to be the only one still available for the MT4GS, would it still be compatible with newer roms? And for that matter, does is have to be used with a particular version of Android, or Sense vs ICS?
You see, I don't know enough about overclock kernels (or even kernels, themselves) to know all the right questions to ask in this situation. All I know is that Bulletproof has the stability I want, while Inquisition has the speed I need. And before I go cutting & pasting bits and pieces of one rom into another, I'd like to know what I should be doing or if I'm even on the right path. So maybe someone can point me in the right direction and help me to understand compatibility of oc kernels & how they can/can't be implemented. Also, where the hell do I even find oc kernels for this model of phone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me to understand all of this. And I apologize in advance for any headache my abundance of questions and lack-of-understanding may cause.
All of the ICS/JB roms that use the v3 kernel by TeamDS are overclocked to 1.7ghz as well. Oh and don't flash a Sensation kernel...you wont boot. Also I'm not sure but I think the latest bulletproof (v1.1) has overclock to 1.7
Edit btw this belongs in the general because this is a question

I'll check those out. I've noticed there's a common trend between all ICS roms for the MT4GS: they all have the same camera failures as well as plenty of other random issues, although some have more than others. So I'm hesitant about trying any ICS roms older than a couple months, since it seems that a truly stable ICS rom for this phone with minimal issues doesnt exist yet. But yes, I will check it out.
As for Bulletproof, if it does have overclock then something is wrong because I tried SetCPU (several others as well) and I wasn't able to set a max frequency higher than 1200-ish mhz (or 1100 something?). No matter what I tried the frequency stayed at stock settings. Thats why I'm trying to find out where to find a compatible oc kernel and how to install/flash it on top of a rom that didn't originally have an oc kernel.
With the Virtuous Inquisition rom that I'm currently on, it allows a max of 1728mhz which is great. Although for some reason whenever I set up a new profile within SetCPU or even change the Min/Max settings, the setting doesn't have an effect on the actual frequency longer than a couple seconds before reverting back to default. And I tried disabling Perflock but I get "Error: Misc Exception.. ". Which brings me back to my original thought about the kernel used in this rom; I found the name of the dev and kernel version used in this rom: "SebastianFM -Sensation 3.0.13 kernel". When I looked up that guy's kernels, they all seem to be exclusively for the Sensation, but his kernels are being used in this Inquisition rom that is compatible for the Sensation, Evo3D, and MT4GS. So the fact that this (apparently) is a Sensation kernel might explain why my settings in SetCPU have no effect and I'm unable to disable Perflock.
Still though, it would be nice to get the best of both worlds; stable rom, fast-as-hell kernel.

Thanks. Didn't know that, I figured this was a development-related question so the "Development" section made sense, and I made sure I labeled it with a "( ? )" to avoid any confusion. My mistake, I suppose. And although I've been a long time reader of this forum, I didn't set up an account til last fall and hadn't actually started a thread til now. Now I know. Soo, is there a way to move this thread and I'm just not seeing it?

No, you are not allowed to move threads, even if you created them.
The post was reported, and the thread moved. For future reference, you can do this as well - but also for future reference, no questions should ever be in the Development section. Thanks!
Hmmm, I'm in a bit of tough spot.
My Wifi speeds are horrible on a CM7.2 ROM. I'm using a custom rom (from cm forum) that someone built to solve the bad bluetooth headset profile that was regressed into the cm7.2 release. I need cm7.2 cause its' bluetooth also supports HID. Unfortunately, wifi speeds suck in this rom. I can't remember whether the cm7.2 stable had poor wifi speeds.
Does anyone recall what this wifi problem was, and how to fix it?
Thx,

You could use smanager ads or pro along with v6 supercharger ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 ). There is a 3g and wifi hack in that script.

It's actually in the 3G TurboCharger script, but it is on the thread you linked to.
Thanks, I'm reviewing those scripts.
Additional info... I disabled N support on my AP and my wifi throughput increased from 300-1000 kbs to a consistent 3000-4000 kbs. So that's alot better. But, CM7.2 wifi consistently shows a ~10DBm sensitivity deficit compared to another phone sitting next to it. Also, the Evo Shift stock ROMs sensitivity was more on order with this other phone. So I don't know if the sensitivity deficit is a bug, or part of the power\battery management.
I'm new to CM7.x, so I don't know how I can best test these thing. If I plug the phone in, does it automatically run in "Performance" mode for all features?
The issue I'm facing is I'm trying to use GrooveIP (VoIP) over Google Voice. I was having issues with this phone, and I beleive they were related to the wifi performance.
Any other suggestions for testing or debugging?

As I continue to investigate this wifi issue, I discover that this CM7.2 has no tiwlan*.ini anywhere on the system. Other "slow wifi" reports mention using a CM6.x tiwlan.ini to fix CM7.2 wifi issues.
Can anyone confirm that a CM7.2 ROM should have tiwlan.ini? Where is it? The only file in /etc/wifi, /system/etc/wifi on this machine\rom is wpa_supplicant.conf.
What I'm really looking for is a ROM that: supports all the standard evo shift hardware stuff (inlcluding wimax), plus, bluetooth HID. It be great if it also improved on battery life.
Any contenders\suggestions?
Thx,

If you are having trouble with CM7 not working well enough for you then stick with a STOCK based sense rom, every asop GB rom is based around the work done on CM7.

I would suggest strapped365's 2.77.651.8 [Rooted Stock-O.T.A] Rom, or Chad The Pathfinder's Stock Mod [SENSE 2.1 | 2.3.4]. There are quite a few others, these are just two of the latest that are quite stable .
Thanks for the ROM suggestions. I actually have the StockMod as my Sense rom for when I have to update Profile and PRL (I recently switched to Ting... so far, so good).
I've been able to poke around a bit down in linux on CM7. I'm suspecting the bcm4329.ko driver has some config wrong in it, but I don't know how to t-shoot settings really. Since the sensitivity is down by ~-10dBm, but otherwise working, I almost think misconfigured antennas or something. "iwconfig eth0" often reports relatively high "Noise level" and some "Tx excessive retries" although I don't have lots of 2.4GHz equipment competing for the spectrum (afaik).
Regarding the linux layer in Android, do both CM and Sense use pretty much the same implementations with regards to (wifi) hardware, or do they use different "management" interfaces? I guess CM is the one that departs most from "stock", but I don't yet have a feel for whether these departures are mostly in the Android layer, or whether they go deep under the hood into the kernel.
This "low-sensitivity wifi" issue is a widely reported issue thru all makes of phones and versions of (at least) CM, but I have yet to come across any positive diagnosis of the source of the issue (although, given the reports, I suspect a common cause). My hunt continues. Seems all the later dev of CM forgoes wimax functionality... and while wimax hasn't proved to be widely available, it does exist in my area, and 3G is so saturated that it's worth trying wimax when available.
Thanks for the help,
rickbol
Hello everyone, I have been enjoying my G2X with SINGH-UI thanks to all the work of this community. I just have one problem, however...
Every time I toggled the Wi-Fi subsystem my G2X would hang or reboot. e.g If I turned Wi-Fi on then off, the next attempt to turn it on would crash. If I turned Wi-Fi tethering on then off, the next attempt to turn it on would crash etc. The Wi-Fi and/or tethering worked flawlessly when it succeeded in activating. This problem just guaranteed that the next time I'd try to do anything with Wi-Fi, my phone would crash.
I wasn't sure if there was a solution because most people were talking about Wi-Fi calling not working, data not working, Wi-Fi not working at all, etc. As per nycelitemaster's recommendation, I installed Trinity's ELP kernel then installed my kernel. This seemed to have helped a little bit but the problem arose once more.
Since I can't post in the developer thread yet, I thought I'd just post here to say thanks and present this little tip/question. Sorry for posting before an exhaustive search; perhaps in the wrong place, but I couldn't contain my curiosity and appreciation. Is this problem common and does it have a definite solution?
I am currently running the latest baseband (v21y) with matching RIL and LOVE it. Everything works; I get a few rare force closes but the system remains active and I can restart apps successfully. It is stable, fast and very pretty with MIUI themes. I also like the battery life with Faux123's P999-CM-Kernel-054-sv-lg-stable. I get about 12 hours standby on a 3500mah extended battery which is pretty good considering I have to be 3G only on my Mobile network (Mobilicity, Canada).
- I'm using Antutu CPU Master to set CPU powersave speeds; I noticed higher benchmark results after purchasing the full version.
- I did battery calibration by manually deleting battery stats in Clockwork Mod recovery.
- I'm enjoying figuring things out! It's been a wonderful journey nurturing my phone from the state it was in when I bought it used.
I'm not sure whether the new Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean ROMS are complete yet so I'll stick with my current one because it's working amazingly well.
My initial disappointment with this phone has turned to satisfaction. Thanks to everyone for keeping the G2X alive in spite of the manufacturer(s) abandonment.

I have installed Eagles blood ICS 4.0.4 but after that I feel performance is very slow and battery discharges fast.
pls can anybody help me to improve performance.?
What was your flashing procedures? Did you do a FULL wipe to include format/system under mounts and storage? Did you flash a kernel with it? Gapps? I use the same ROM and its one of the fastest roms I've used and by far the fastest and smoothest ics for this device

I've actually found that out of all the ICS roms, this discharged battery the least.* Lag does happen, but it comes and goes (welcome to G2X hackfested ICS+ roms)
*Pain-N-Panic, does this rom ever go into an extreme deep sleep for you if left unattended? My main problem was that my alarms wouldn't go off at the right time, they'd only activate after pressing the power button to wake the device up.

Woah, no sir, not at all. That's a serious problem lol. However, I do not use my phone as an alarm so I can't honestly say so. One of the best things about this ICS ROM compared to some of the others is that it comes with a great kernel that can be overclocked and undervolted. I run mine at 1000 max and 216 min and undervolt everything at -50 with SetCPU. With this setting my battery life is on par with stock CM7, which in my opinion has the best battery life of any ROM for this phone. Another little goodie to add to this rom is the Lag free/dalvick fix. It's a build.prop mod that can be executed with script manager. You can find it in the g2x android development forum. However, if you decide to use this mod i recommend adding the scripts to your build.prop manually on your pc or text editor on your phone. I used the build.prop file that came with the mods pre-loaded and it actually slowed down the device a little. When I added them manually, eaglesblood has never ran smoother or been more snappier.
Haha, I wisened up and went back to CM7 and got an alarm clock.
I've seen the build.prop mod, but with CM7, it's not needed
If I do ever need my ICS fix, this would still be my go-to ROM.
Yup, I switch back and forth from cm7 and eagles blood as well. Whenever I need a working video camera is when I flash back to cm7. Wish they could get working video on ics.....damn drivers! Although the lag free fix isn't needed on cm7 it can be used if you wanna try it out. I myself have never tried but plan on doing so whenever I go back to it

I just followed procedure mentioned in the eaglesblood thread for this ROM.I did wipe/format and installation through CWM(but dont know is that a full wipe or have to do something more?) .I guess i flashed kernel as it is different from my previous GB.Also I did flash Gapps mentioned in the forum.
then I run script tune.sh mentioned in the thread for lag free runing using sm manager and keeping 'Run in root' option but no luck it's having lag.battery discharges within 8-10hr.How much your battery last for if you keep wifi, bluetooth options on?

Can you tell me how to and what to put in build.prop manually?
If you're keeping wi-fi AND bluetooth on, continuously, then 8-10 hours of battery life is to be expected. I never use blue tooth and I keep data and/or wifi OFF unless I am using it at the time. Once I finish using the internet for whatever it is that I am doing I shut it off. Instead of giving you a tutorial, I can just post a copy of my build.prop and you can use that instead.

I'm also agree to a--c and have observed same deep sleep issue don't know because of what but sometimes if we keep it unattended it goes on deep sleep. And in that case I have to remove battery, replace and restart.

Are you running stock or custom kernel? Do you have a CPU app? If so, what is your cpu clocked at (both min at max)?
Here's my build.prop file:

Thank you pain-n-panic.I just have to copy this build prop file and paste it in the folder where the previous build prop is,right? or their is another technique for that to do?
and about cpu it's clocked at 216Mhz-1.41 Ghz..kernel is 3.034-egb_p999-5 so my guess is it's came with EGB rom.
Call Audio
Does the call audio work in this ROM?

Yes, I like to use Root Explorer to navigate around my system files and folders. All you have to do is drop the build.prop into your system folder and hit yes when it asks you to replace the existing build.prop file. MAKE SURE that you read the directions in the thread and that you set the permissions correctly on the modded build.prop file. I do not recall what they had me set the permissions to but that is very important for you to set the permissions correctly on the modded build.prop before dropping into your system folder.
I figured that was the case....your CPU is maxed out at 1408. This is why your battery life is weak. Drop is down! 1015 mhz max WITH undervolting I still get smooth performance and great battery life. There is an awesome tutorial I read posted somewhere in the g2x forum about how to properly undervolt your device. Its a pain in the butt when you're in the process but so worth it in the end. Try searching it and giving it a try if battery life is a main concern for you.

In both 4.0.3 and 4.0.4? Because I need a daily ICS ROM where I can use calls with audio.

Yup. I like 4.0.4 much better than 4.0.3. I used 4.0.3 for about 20 minutes and flashed back to 4.0.4, never even made a phone call so I can't honestly say how calling works on that ROM. I use 4.0.4 as my daily driver and calling works just fine.

Hmmm, is there any chance that the video recording can be fixed?
Nope. Video recording/playback is broken on every ics/hackfest for our device. We don't have the proper drivers
