I got my Inspire on release day at 11:00am when BB opened and by 3pm i ran the ace hack kit and it was rooted and had a DHD ROM flashed on the phone. For the first week there was not a whole lot of ROM's or options, but week 2 and 3, they popped up like a bag of popcorn.
The first set of ROM's and kernels (Desire HD ROM's) left people with dingy sound, no you-tube or any video support at all for that matter. Other people experienced Wi-Fi problems as well. Different fixes and patches came out fixing most problems, except sound seems to be the biggest headache trying to find the right combination of audio settings, drivers, etc.
My favorite ROM was CoreDroid, basically because the theme is beautiful, but no matter what radio/kernel I used It took literally 15 minutes to get a satellite lock. I tried faster fix from the market, I went into the system to make sure it was set to North-America and not Europe nothing worked.
Android Revolution is another awesome ROM, however, I had Wi-Fi issues. "Obtaining IP Address" is as far as it would get before finally disconnecting. Once again I flashed different radios and kernels and still no go.
What I finally kept is the Stock ROM Optimized Rooted and to make this ROM super responsive I used LeeDroid's 1.8Ghz Kernel. I use SetCPU and keep it at 1.267Mhz. (1.6Mhz when playing games or multitasking. Never locked up) I can open my app drawer and give it one flick, and i can watch 90 apps zoom by in less then a second with no hesitation ever. It's very fast, very smooth, no force closes, Gps hits 9 satellites in less then 15 seconds we have full lock, mobile data is 3.8 down, 2.2 up (average) bluetooth file transfer works, and voice activated dialing, sound is perfect, and for people looking to tether, just get wireless tether from the market. It does Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I tethered to my playstation 3 just to see how well it would do a HD netflix stream, and it was flawless. Never had to stop to buffer.
I'm also on the stock radio which is 06.04.06_m, Everything is so smooth and perfect I see no need to change until AT&T releases there version of gingerbread and it has ROOT access. The problems I have had with different ROM's are isolated and doesn't mean your going to have the same problem. It's weird but that's how it works. 2 exact phones, both running same setup, can have 2 totally different problems. Just the way it is in Flashing Land.
I'm no Pro, just giving my opinion and facts with my particular unit. The different ROM's seems to be like the captivate. You gain something, you lose something.
Super Circle Battery Icon works great as well. Get it here
3/16/2011 - Version 2 flashed without a glitch. Wireless, Gps, mobile data, all work as well or better. I also flashed LeeDroid's 2.2. 6 o/c kernel and everything is dead on. Great Job
That's all I want to do it root it, increase the volume and get wifi tether working. Right now if you want to not have any drivers issues it seems like the current on the phone works best Thanks for the info!
I also wanted to increase the cpu speed, did you take much of a hit on the battery?

Not at all, it last all day. Put SetCPU on "ondemand" and when I'm not using phone for awhile I simply type *#*#4636#*#* and set is to GSM only and that's another way to save a lot of battery. I also use a app called easy switch where I can turn off mobile data completely when not in use. I have awesome battery life.
i've been using the cm7 nightlies. i don't particularly enjoy htc sense and rather prefer the aosp style android.
I too am loving the Stock ROM Optimized-Rooted-etc. I've only tried it and a build of CM7, which seemed not quite as smooth as the aforementioned ROM. Additionally, whenever I played the game Rush Hour and got a perfect score, it would always force close [not a problem with the stock-optimized ROM].
I am considering trying LeeDroid's kernel on top of Stock-optimized ROM to boost performance a little more, but I'm a little unsure about the process. Do I just copy his kernel to my sd card and then flash it in CWM Recovery using the "install zip from sdcard" command? I assume a similar technique is used to install the super circle battery mentioned in the OP?
I don't see RCMix HD in the OP. I've been using 3.4 and it's solid. If you look at the thread there's hardly any complaints.
Great write-up. I've been thinking about starting a thread asking developers/users to give a quick description of popular ROMs and go over the pros/cons. It's kind of difficult to sift through 200+ pages of discussions about each ROM and get a clear idea what it's like. Thanks for throwing your 2 cents in. I've been happy with the stock rooted ROM, but I've thought about trying out a couple of others, maybe Revolution, if anyone wants to through 2 more cents into the pot.

I really like the Stock Rom Optimized Rooted as well. I'm not getting as high upload speed as you are, but about 4 times higher than I was getting out of the box. And everything is very smooth onscreen as you mention.
I like Hybrid1.72.zip battery icon with it.
I haven't tried overclocking yet, but after reading your post, that is my next project!

Im building a rom/kernel now based off stock Rom and compiling kernel from inspire source. Already got the extended power menu done, hopefully it'll be out in a few days. Not sure if the kernel will be done or not but hopefully I can get it out at the same time as the Rom.
+1 for Optimized Stock Rom. I liked Android Revolution, but my Inspire would take 10-15 minutes to get a GPS lock. With OSR, I get lock in 15-30 seconds. No downside to this ROM at all for me!

Nice. I used your Captivate ROMs and had great results. I guess I know the next ROM I will be flashing.

I also still use one of your Roms and will without fail try one in the Inspire when you finish cooking!
Right now I'm undecided and switching between Revolution 4 Beta 2 Gingerbread and twopumpchump's Stock optimized with LeeDroid kernel. I'm getting better download speeds with the latter option but both are exceptionally good roms.

Any chance Call Record will work in the Inspire as it does in some of your other roms?
Have you tried the gingerbread test radio?
Hi everyone, so the other day I flashed the latest sky ice cream (6. 7z) with the latest faux (skyrocket) kernel. Then I noticed that my phones battery was dieing at an alarming rate. (this is also after a ton of issues came up with my phone). Last night I did a nabdroid restore to when I first rooted the phone so stock kernel and stock rom and everything was working great, although I didn't spend enough time to see if the phone was acting up but in setcpu, I did notice the fact that the phone did enter deep sleep.
I am now running red Sonia and yes I did flash fauxs ultimate kernel and now for the hours that I've had it disconnected, the entire time that I haven't been playing with it, the phone has been running at 300MHz.
I'm not at home currently but is there some way that I could diagnose what's going on in terminal? Or some type of logging I could run to see what's running my phone into the ground??
Any way thanks in advance for reading this, and I hope this issue can be resolved.

Hi there,
So I just flashed this ROM : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474878
It was last night, I hopped that battery issue drain by Cell stanby~Android System would be fix, but it didn't worked for me..
I flashed the ROM correctly, everything was OK. Wiped data/cache/dalvik and even formatted /system.
I don't understand why, my battery is really strange, sometimes I lose only 2 or 3% during many hours, other times I lose 20% per hour (with inactiv use).
I never had battery issue before ICS.
I got a Nexus S i9023, I hope some of you gonna be able to help me, I really want to fix that battery !
Best regards,
SpawN-
flash a rom that doesn't suck your battery! Or try some kernels that helps you to save battery
Yea sure, but this ROM was just here for the problem with battery, so it had to fix the problem, but didn't work for me, that's why I don't understand =/

sounds like it could be gremlins, or an app app wreaking havoc. also, apps that need to check for notifications drain battery quickly. i usually turn off all notifications(except gtalk/gmail).
I don't have any apps making annoying notifications, my Wifi and 3G are OFF and I often use Task Killer to kill useless processus.
I read that the porting of 4.0.4 for ns gsm was really smooth and battery save
This ROM wasn't even intended for your phone. All bets are off for stability...forget about battery life.
Seriously, though the behaviour you're seeing may not be the ROM. It could be programs keeping the phone awake during standby. To confirm, there's an app called Better Battery Stats on market (and in the Android Development and Hacking section on these forums) that may be able to help you figure things out.

Hello,
Have you tried to change your RADIO ?
try this kernel *Matr1x* with BLN and voodoo v16.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361477
I think it would be help.
For what i've seen the 4.0.4 version was just a leak so there could be some issue/bug. Maybe is better to stay with a custom Rom+kernel and wait for the update or for a custom kernel based on oficial realease 4.0.4 version.
cheers.
The only battery fix in 4.04 was the android os stats being logged incorrectly, i.e. too high.
That has been fixed in 4.04.
I don't think there ever was a cell standby/android system logging bug.
You may be mistaken.
Currently I am using Endymion as the stable ROM on my device and I am pretty happy with its performance as well as the battery life, except for some random reboots.
But because of the limitations on some apps on Play store, which are not compatible on gingerbread, I wanted to try some JB roms.
With the andromadus builds (I know they are betas, but still many people say they are good for them, even if not for permanent usage at the current stage of developments), I have two issues:
1. My workplace wifi has wpa2 encryption with static ip addresses. And with both Flinny's and nk111's builds, both the latest and the ones prior to them, I cannot connect to the wifi despite several attempts. Though, my home wifi connection, which uses Auto-settings (with wpa2 encryption), the connection is almost instant. Is there any remedy for that or am i doing something wrong. Also, with few newer Sense ROMs like Fallout 5 and Sabsa 8.5, wifi has never given me problem.
2. Also, with those builds, I have severe graphical glitches with the default settings. I tried to toggle the hardware acceleration overlay in settings, but no success. The graphical glitches are in the form of suspension of the phone, and only when I touch the screen, the process goes forward. In other words, if I have to type 'abc' on the keyboard, after I press 'a', the phone stops, and only when I press 'b', the 'a' appears, and so on. I hope I am able to convey the issue. Is this problem common or only I am affected by it.
For flashing, I first do a complete wipe (Format all except sdcard option in 4ext Recovery), then flash the .zip and then the gapps followed by Fix permissions. But the problems start from the first boot itself. I have tried 5-6 times, but things remain like this.
I do have S-off, with eng hboot of 0.98.2000, and I had applied the latest radio 20.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110.
Thanks in advance.
Hi I'm using viper Rom saga1.0 it is Android 4.04 it's been running very smoothly and hasn't had any graphical glitches. I highly recommend it. Try it out and see if it fixes those problems for you.

Thanks for the answer.
I have tried out a few ics roms, namely fallout, iceds and sabsa, all of which work well and smooth without the two issues I have pointed out in the experimental jb roms. Except for endymion, all other roms give me serious battery drainage.
Eg, in endymion, the phone goes into deep sleep, with no change in the battery percent indicator overnight.
While with reaper (smooth, but overnight it goes from 100 to 45%), with ics roms (again smooth, but overnight battery goes from 100 to 0, and phone shuts off). In all cases the battery usage culprit comes out to be Android OS. I have tried the latest amidabuddha kernels too, but same result. All testing done using default Rom settings and the settings of my normal endy tweaks (245-1024, ondemand, noop, with low manual brightness, WiFi/data off, sim on).
It seems like my phone remains to be married to endymion.

Well i think you're battery is dying. i never had a 100%-0% draining in any rom i tested.
Have a look on Betterbatterystats here on xda to find which app is misbehaving. There are a lot of reasons which can cause this high drainage. Upload BBS logs after the night and we'll know more.

Yes of course i've flashed the boot img...

I know this is a classic of a noob, but it's not for me. My mom is using this phone, and I'm currently running JellybeanDS (CM 10.2). It works, but there are times where it is unstable and the battery drains randomly.
So, I'm looking for the most stable, minimal bugs, no-frills (not a whole lot of customization options), ROM that will be good enough for just basic use.
I'm looking at the "official" CM 10.1 P21 from tbalden, but I'm not sure how stable that is. Also, KitKatDS, but I'm not sure how that behaves either.
I've been out of touch with ROMs on this device, which is why I'm asking you guys. Let me know any thoughts, thanks!

I am quite happy with Tbalden's CM 10.1. My bugs I've discovered:
- Screen goes black about once a week. Can be fixed by returning the CPU frequencies to stock (192min, 1296max), although I have recently had to bump the min up to 384 when I got a new battery.
- Some incoming calls I cannot hear the caller, and the caller cannot hear me. I think this is due to my SIM card (since it started happening after swapping.
- In web browser, the Shift and Alt Key's don't "lock", have to hold down the respective modifier to use special keys. No big deal.
- Don't know if it is this ROM or Fly-On mod I once had, but I have to reboot once or twice a week because the system slows down considerably when on for a prolonged period.
I've tried KitKatDS, and I've had the same bugs (except maybe the last, didn't hang around that long) plus random battery drain. So 10.1 I stuck with.
If the above continues to bother me, I would go back to MikTouch, which is a very viable choice (I just prefer to avoid Gingerbread these days).

ahh the black screen of death that's been plaguing this device forever. that's acceptable, given your fix.
the robotic call issue i remember well (what you described, and the fact that i can only hear random garbled robotic nonsense from the other party). that might be a dealbreaker, because she says she hasn't faced that at all on the current rom.
that's fine, she doesn't use the keyboard at all.
can't say i've heard of that one, but i'll keep it in mind.
thanks for the report on both!

I wouldn't call it robotic (at least what I get) as I don't hear anything. In fact, my provider does not even register the call as having been placed (which leads me to believe it's a SIM issue).
If I had tried 10.2 for longer, I imagine I would have the same issue.
MikTouch is modified stock, so a few extra tweaks on a solid base. It's just old in comparison.
Long time, no hear! I don't think it's changed in the interim - basic no frills surely still got to be Miktouch or SCVerhagens CM9.1.

Something I never tried. I did use CM 9.1 official for a while, but ditched it when I didn't see Corporate as a new account type (wanted to connect to work calendar/email). Not sure if SCVerhagen added that functionality. Or if Device<>PC file transfer (not the speed, as I hear that it was, rather the copy errors), and the Mobile Data toggle (can turn on data, but not off) in the notification bar got fixed (my two favourite bugs).
