Most stable, no-frills ROM? - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

I know this is a classic of a noob, but it's not for me. My mom is using this phone, and I'm currently running JellybeanDS (CM 10.2). It works, but there are times where it is unstable and the battery drains randomly.
So, I'm looking for the most stable, minimal bugs, no-frills (not a whole lot of customization options), ROM that will be good enough for just basic use.
I'm looking at the "official" CM 10.1 P21 from tbalden, but I'm not sure how stable that is. Also, KitKatDS, but I'm not sure how that behaves either.
I've been out of touch with ROMs on this device, which is why I'm asking you guys. Let me know any thoughts, thanks!

I am quite happy with Tbalden's CM 10.1. My bugs I've discovered:
- Screen goes black about once a week. Can be fixed by returning the CPU frequencies to stock (192min, 1296max), although I have recently had to bump the min up to 384 when I got a new battery.
- Some incoming calls I cannot hear the caller, and the caller cannot hear me. I think this is due to my SIM card (since it started happening after swapping.
- In web browser, the Shift and Alt Key's don't "lock", have to hold down the respective modifier to use special keys. No big deal.
- Don't know if it is this ROM or Fly-On mod I once had, but I have to reboot once or twice a week because the system slows down considerably when on for a prolonged period.
I've tried KitKatDS, and I've had the same bugs (except maybe the last, didn't hang around that long) plus random battery drain. So 10.1 I stuck with.
If the above continues to bother me, I would go back to MikTouch, which is a very viable choice (I just prefer to avoid Gingerbread these days).

ahh the black screen of death that's been plaguing this device forever. that's acceptable, given your fix.
the robotic call issue i remember well (what you described, and the fact that i can only hear random garbled robotic nonsense from the other party). that might be a dealbreaker, because she says she hasn't faced that at all on the current rom.
that's fine, she doesn't use the keyboard at all.
can't say i've heard of that one, but i'll keep it in mind.
thanks for the report on both!

I wouldn't call it robotic (at least what I get) as I don't hear anything. In fact, my provider does not even register the call as having been placed (which leads me to believe it's a SIM issue).
If I had tried 10.2 for longer, I imagine I would have the same issue.
MikTouch is modified stock, so a few extra tweaks on a solid base. It's just old in comparison.

Long time, no hear! I don't think it's changed in the interim - basic no frills surely still got to be Miktouch or SCVerhagens CM9.1.

Something I never tried. I did use CM 9.1 official for a while, but ditched it when I didn't see Corporate as a new account type (wanted to connect to work calendar/email). Not sure if SCVerhagen added that functionality. Or if Device<>PC file transfer (not the speed, as I hear that it was, rather the copy errors), and the Mobile Data toggle (can turn on data, but not off) in the notification bar got fixed (my two favourite bugs).

[Opinion][Updated]Inspire Best ROM (I tried them all)

I got my Inspire on release day at 11:00am when BB opened and by 3pm i ran the ace hack kit and it was rooted and had a DHD ROM flashed on the phone. For the first week there was not a whole lot of ROM's or options, but week 2 and 3, they popped up like a bag of popcorn.
The first set of ROM's and kernels (Desire HD ROM's) left people with dingy sound, no you-tube or any video support at all for that matter. Other people experienced Wi-Fi problems as well. Different fixes and patches came out fixing most problems, except sound seems to be the biggest headache trying to find the right combination of audio settings, drivers, etc.
My favorite ROM was CoreDroid, basically because the theme is beautiful, but no matter what radio/kernel I used It took literally 15 minutes to get a satellite lock. I tried faster fix from the market, I went into the system to make sure it was set to North-America and not Europe nothing worked.
Android Revolution is another awesome ROM, however, I had Wi-Fi issues. "Obtaining IP Address" is as far as it would get before finally disconnecting. Once again I flashed different radios and kernels and still no go.
What I finally kept is the Stock ROM Optimized Rooted and to make this ROM super responsive I used LeeDroid's 1.8Ghz Kernel. I use SetCPU and keep it at 1.267Mhz. (1.6Mhz when playing games or multitasking. Never locked up) I can open my app drawer and give it one flick, and i can watch 90 apps zoom by in less then a second with no hesitation ever. It's very fast, very smooth, no force closes, Gps hits 9 satellites in less then 15 seconds we have full lock, mobile data is 3.8 down, 2.2 up (average) bluetooth file transfer works, and voice activated dialing, sound is perfect, and for people looking to tether, just get wireless tether from the market. It does Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I tethered to my playstation 3 just to see how well it would do a HD netflix stream, and it was flawless. Never had to stop to buffer.
I'm also on the stock radio which is 06.04.06_m, Everything is so smooth and perfect I see no need to change until AT&T releases there version of gingerbread and it has ROOT access. The problems I have had with different ROM's are isolated and doesn't mean your going to have the same problem. It's weird but that's how it works. 2 exact phones, both running same setup, can have 2 totally different problems. Just the way it is in Flashing Land.
I'm no Pro, just giving my opinion and facts with my particular unit. The different ROM's seems to be like the captivate. You gain something, you lose something.
Super Circle Battery Icon works great as well. Get it here
3/16/2011 - Version 2 flashed without a glitch. Wireless, Gps, mobile data, all work as well or better. I also flashed LeeDroid's 2.2. 6 o/c kernel and everything is dead on. Great Job
That's all I want to do it root it, increase the volume and get wifi tether working. Right now if you want to not have any drivers issues it seems like the current on the phone works best Thanks for the info!
I also wanted to increase the cpu speed, did you take much of a hit on the battery?

Not at all, it last all day. Put SetCPU on "ondemand" and when I'm not using phone for awhile I simply type *#*#4636#*#* and set is to GSM only and that's another way to save a lot of battery. I also use a app called easy switch where I can turn off mobile data completely when not in use. I have awesome battery life.
i've been using the cm7 nightlies. i don't particularly enjoy htc sense and rather prefer the aosp style android.
I too am loving the Stock ROM Optimized-Rooted-etc. I've only tried it and a build of CM7, which seemed not quite as smooth as the aforementioned ROM. Additionally, whenever I played the game Rush Hour and got a perfect score, it would always force close [not a problem with the stock-optimized ROM].
I am considering trying LeeDroid's kernel on top of Stock-optimized ROM to boost performance a little more, but I'm a little unsure about the process. Do I just copy his kernel to my sd card and then flash it in CWM Recovery using the "install zip from sdcard" command? I assume a similar technique is used to install the super circle battery mentioned in the OP?
I don't see RCMix HD in the OP. I've been using 3.4 and it's solid. If you look at the thread there's hardly any complaints.
Great write-up. I've been thinking about starting a thread asking developers/users to give a quick description of popular ROMs and go over the pros/cons. It's kind of difficult to sift through 200+ pages of discussions about each ROM and get a clear idea what it's like. Thanks for throwing your 2 cents in. I've been happy with the stock rooted ROM, but I've thought about trying out a couple of others, maybe Revolution, if anyone wants to through 2 more cents into the pot.

I really like the Stock Rom Optimized Rooted as well. I'm not getting as high upload speed as you are, but about 4 times higher than I was getting out of the box. And everything is very smooth onscreen as you mention.
I like Hybrid1.72.zip battery icon with it.
I haven't tried overclocking yet, but after reading your post, that is my next project!

Im building a rom/kernel now based off stock Rom and compiling kernel from inspire source. Already got the extended power menu done, hopefully it'll be out in a few days. Not sure if the kernel will be done or not but hopefully I can get it out at the same time as the Rom.
+1 for Optimized Stock Rom. I liked Android Revolution, but my Inspire would take 10-15 minutes to get a GPS lock. With OSR, I get lock in 15-30 seconds. No downside to this ROM at all for me!

I also still use one of your Roms and will without fail try one in the Inspire when you finish cooking!
Right now I'm undecided and switching between Revolution 4 Beta 2 Gingerbread and twopumpchump's Stock optimized with LeeDroid kernel. I'm getting better download speeds with the latter option but both are exceptionally good roms.

What is killing my phone's performance?

Hi all,
I've been struggling for the past few months with terrible performance issues on my Droid Charge. Things like redrawing the home screen and lag between switching programs I can live with, but when it takes several minutes to pull up the dialer to make a phone call or to answer a text message, my phone kind of stops being useful as a phone.
I started off on stock when I got the phone last year, then I rooted it a few months later. Everything was great until June. Gradually, my phone had become less responsive (taking forever to make calls, view and send texts). That plus something weird was eating >2GB data/month, and I could only identify it as "Android OS/others" via Onavo. I decided to go clean and try Tweaked 2.2w/PBJ. Things were pretty good for a couple of weeks until the major lag started coming back. I stepped back and uninstalled many apps, hoping to find one that was the main culprit, but my phone continues to act like it's trying to calculate a billion values of pi or something.
I tried following the steps from the rootzwiki "5 Steps to Keep Your Phone Snappy/Lagfree" (not allowed to link yet ), which helped somewhat, but it has not eliminated the problem. I often find myself resetting my phone to make phone calls. SwiftKey often doesn't load correctly and requires me to enter and exit applications frequently to get it to allow me to type. I had to wait nearly 2 minutes to get my home screen to display until I removed Holo Launcher and went back to TouchWiz.
Sorry for the essay--I'd be happy to provide additional details if needed. What can I do to a) figure out what's wrong with my phone and b) fix it?
Thanks in advance!

could any number of issues - ranging from a rogue app to the ROM not sticking correctly. when you installed Tweaked, did you do it via CWM or ODIN?
also, did you enable the build.prop tweaks to help with redraws and making calls?
otherwise, I would suggest to try wiping cache and dalvik (sometimes that cleans it up a bit as well rebooting the phone once every few days) to help clear out some of the clutter.
do you have any "force close" messages (such as SyncMLSvc)?
Thanks for the quick reply.
I installed Tweaked through ODIN. I haven't heard about the build.prop tweaks though. Is there a resource you can point me to or a quick process to enabling them? I thought that a lot of these tweaks were "cooked" into the Tweaked ROM.
I've got App Cache Cleaner dejunking me every 4 hours, and I try and hit the davlik every day...I still have issues.
I do have the SyncMLSvc force close on boot. I figured it was a known bug in Tweaked and that it'd be addressed in a later revision. Is it a symptom of something more ominous?

i don't use App cache cleaner, and thus do not have any issues. also, if you have TiBu, you can uninstall that syncmlsvc. see if that does the trick.
regarding the build.prop tweak, remove the # from ro.home_app_adj=1
here is a link to some others: http://www.s3forums.com/forum/galaxy-s3-hacking-mods/474-list-some-build-prop-tweaks.html
Do you have facebook installed? That P.O.S. kills my phone everytime. I install it from time to time just to see if they are coming close to fixing it. Needless to say it gets uninstalled in under 10 minutes.
I know everybody will jump all over me on this but why not try stock rooted FP5 for a couple of days. It will give you a baseline to compare other roms and app impact with. If your phone still acts up it would seem to be pointing to a hardware error IMHO.
What can it hurt?

Most importantly out of everything is to always check out your md5's and make sure they match. Also try going back to stock with the pit file too for a full fresh install. But I think the problem is the md5 sums unless you download apps off the internet
Edit: also remember to mount system when flashing roms

So, an update: I thought it was SwiftKey that was killing my phone, because I was doing better after I removed it. It was crappified even then, even after removing Facebook. I bit the bullet yesterday and went back to stock, updated all the way to FP5. I kept Facebook off (I've mostly moved over to G+ anyways). Everything is great. I put SwiftKey back on, and everything is still great.
I hate to say it, but even though the loss of customization in Tweaked is disappointing, I'm more satisfied with the phone in general with the stock ROM. My battery even lasts more than 3 hours too.

my phone usually has that affect after flashing a new ROM. basically it's the wiping of data and cache/dalvik that helps cleans out the problems.

Maybe...but I've been wiping the cache/davlik fairly often. I had uninstalled most my apps...maybe some weird bug was still manifesting itself. I don't think my phone has been this responsive even after first going to Tweaked. :-/

Well as long as your happy that's all that really matters. To be fair - there is nothing in Tweaked that should degrade performance at all compared to what is normally seen in stock. The one difference I could see is that Tweaked is deodexed - and many swear the odexed approach is faster/snappier/whatever-adjective-you-want-to-say-that-means-better than the deodexed one. Hopefully things stay functioning well.

I tried forever to get PBJ to play nice. RFS & ext4. Gemini App Manager autostart tweaks. MinFree tweaks. All the TweakTool init.d tweaks. The SQL index tweaks. overclocking. Autokiller, other memory apps, JuiceDefender, other build.prop tweaks, etc. I tried it all...
I'm not sure if it was my hardware version or what, but I just could not get it to work well. It always seemed like it ran out of memory and couldn't automatically manage the apps in an overloaded situation. If i manually ran some of the SQL scripts, and killed running apps, it would be ok, but not for long. I had problems losing text messages because I think the text message handler got killed or didn't run in time. I've tried GoSMS and the stock SMS. I ended up relying on Ghostly SMS to help catch the texts I lost.
Once I went back to stock FP1, most of my problems went away. It's been much more stable. So, since then, it's been stock kernel (obviously on RFS). I've been on FP5 with various versions of Tweaked 3 beta/RC and now I'm no the final. All good.
So, as much promise PBJ has or had (who knows what the FP1/FP5 hybrid will turn out like), stock kernel with Tweak 3 is the way to go for me!

You're 100% correct!!
Please correct me if I'm wrong because I really want to know. The way I see it is, the real improvements over FP1 came from what Samsung did with FP5. Then what Dwitherell did was remove the useless bloat and ugliness then add the useful features and beautify it without changing anything that would hurt the performance.
The first time I upgraded to FP5 stock I noticed the speed increase right off. I checked it out a little and was amazed. But of course it had all of Verizon's bloat garbage in it and none of the awesome tweaks from Dwith. And it had no user installed apps in it at all. It has always seemed like the more apps I install the slower the phone gets.
So am I right?

[Q] Some questions about CM10 concerning features, bugs, battery life

First question - Are there lock screen notifications for text messages, e-mails, etc.? I haven't been able to find them if there are.
Second question - Is there a way to stop getting VZWNMN messages after flashing to CM10 without blocking the number. So in other words, is there a fix for this?
Third question - Is there an official page with bugs noted by CM themselves? Rather than scrolling through threads reading what everyone else is saying.
Fourth - Haven't really been able to try it out much yet, but how is the battery life on CM10? I only have it rooted and on CM10 which means I have no special apps, kernels, whatever else installed. Is there anything recommended to install with CM10 besides GAPPS?
Hope someone can answer these questions!
1. Not that I have seen without third party app. But with slide being my only security setting I am able to utilize the notification pull down
2. There was a thread in the q/a section yesterday regarding this and you have to go to a Verizon based Web Page and change a setting (don't remember the exact details) and they should stop
3. I have not seen a "bug" list per say... But then again I haven't exactly searched for one either... Sorry I cannot answer this one
And I only flash rom gapps and kernel and then install my apps etc. Nothing else special
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901508 this should help with your second question. Sorry I didn't have the link handy with my first reply.
Re battery life, CM seems to give me lesser battery life than stock ROM. I ran stock for a couple of weeks, and with moderate to heavy usage (lots of playing with new phone, browsing, changing settings etc), I'd still have about 25pct left at bed time. Now, it's about to turn off around the same time.
I had Galaxy Nexus before this, and a Captivate before that, and had CM on both of them, and wouldn't always make it to the end of the day. S3 is better than both of those.
when I used cm10, the battery life was somewhat less than stock. I'm running Beans rom now and battery life is very good. Better than stock.
I have to say that i'm considering going back to CM10. Both rom's are smooth and fast. Everything works in Beans for the most, making it a daily for a lot of people.
On Bean's R9 and R11 with imoseyon's LK 0.5 I was getting 4.5 hours of screen on time. On 9/23 nightly, I'm getting 4 hours of screen on time. I can tolerate that difference as I prefer AOSP based roms.

Help with audio using CM10
I'm on the current nightly builds. This happens on all the builds I've used. At times, seems random to me, the phone will say 'audio' or 'resuming audio'. I've had this happen even when set to silent mode. Any ideas????????????
thanks,
Elliott

[Q] Which ROM for a stable flash/torch app?

I recently got the Blaze4G and it is stock, but in the past I had the Samsung Fascinate and I would flash CM and AOKP onto it and the camera flash and torch apps didn't work with the camera LED. I read on the CM 10 development thread that there is also an issue with the camera flash. Are there any non-stock roms that do not have issues with the flash/torch working well?

You could just install an app from the play store that would give you that functionality. Power toggles is one that comes to mind that works on stock that has a working torch toggle.

No, I mean with the aftermarket ROMs, do any others besides CM 10 have issues with the flash or toggle? I have no problems with the stock Blaze 4G torch
I'm on the latest CM10 Nightly and the included Torch works fine.

No. Don't use the 'stable' build. It's not that stable. Use the latest nightly 3/18.

Why do you say that the stable build isn't that stable? I've been running it and it works fine for me. It's randomly rebooted on me a total of 2 or 3 times though, and I feel like the battery should last longer so I'm keen to hear what you have to say.

That's why I say it's unstable. Random reboots are no longer present and battery life is improved among other things.
Random reboots = unstable lol
I don't fully recall but I believe the SoD was present on the 'stable build' too.

2 random reboots in a few months isn't so bad in my opinion. It's not completely rock solid stable but at least I've never gotten a screen of death. I'm thinking of trying out the nightly but while better battery life does sound very enticing, the screen of death seems like a show stopping problem. It seems safer to just flash the lightning zap kernel to see if it'll improve my battery life. When you say you get the screen of death in the nightly, how often do you get it? How often do others say they get it?

I don't get the SoD in the nightly. Didn't say I did. But I think the issue surrounding the SoD is present in the 'stable' build.
I believe the SoD had something to do with the BLN but I'm not 100% on that. I know a lot went into getting rid of the SoD and I don't think those efforts started until after the 'stable' build. I also had issues (what seems like) back in the day where when I would receive a call the phone would freeze and hot boot (reboot to cyanogenmod bootanimation). I also recall having major battery drain compared to previous nightlies with the stable build and posted my results somewhere - maybe in the CM10 thread. Something like an additional 20-40% faster drain even in standby compared to the nightly just before the stable release - using the same kernel too. Something in the stable release seemed to be the cause, and the very next nightly the issue was addressed (which I think I pointed out in the CM thread also).
I also believe that the 'default' kernel with CM10 has added the interactive governor since the stable build. I don't remember having that before either.
You can flash the LZ kernel (it's awesome) but I think there is or may be an issue with the davlik. I do believe Thomas is already on this - read the LZ thread for more info. I was getting reboots quite often using it with both PA and CM10 - sometimes immediately after boot. That doesn't mean you won't run it just fine 100%, just something to be aware of. Make sure you nandroid before flashing in case you run into any instability.

Ah, the way you worded it I thought you got the SoD. I definitely notice the battery draining quite fast, even on standby just as you said. Sometimes I fully charge it before I go to sleep and unplug it; I wake up and the battery is at 90% (Estimate off the top of my head). Other times I fully charge it to 100% and unplug it, only to have it immediately drop down to 99% and within minutes go down even lower. I'm using the default kernel in the CM10 stable build and I have the Interactive governor (It's default), and my scheduler is CFQ (Also default).
You've certainly convinced me to try out the nightly, I'll have to flash it soon. I'd also like to try out the LZ kernel as it does seem really cool. In what areas did you see an improvement and was it a big difference?

Racings unofficial AOKP + lightning zap = WIN
Snappy snappy, stable(no reboots period), best battery life for any jelly bean ROM I've tried, and the built-in toggle torch works perfectly.
just my 2 cents

[Q] CM 11 with ION by sultanxda stability problems

installed newest
(date 27.1.2014 with GAPPS modular mini from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073)
did full wipe (factory reset, system, cache) as in info
have some major problems with stability, looks like system degrades quickly after leaving screen off mode
After restart I can set up everything fine, can use network, launch apps, change system settings etc
but after first turning off and turning on lock screen starts to show first problems, dots (I'm using pattern unlock) sometimes start to activate on their own, not always but sometimes this happens, but I'm still able to logon...
after second 'screen off' and 'screen on' I'm having big problems trying to unlock screen - sometime dot's don't react to touches, sometimes they do not end connecting after taking away finger from screen...
after third off/on I'm unable to pass unlock screen - it becomes unresponsive, dots start to connect randomly, sometime even 'emergency calls' gets activated...
what can cause this? full phone restart appears to fix problems for short time, but after few off/on have problems agains...
this did not happen in builds from few months ago
tried to set higher min cpu frequency to 384MHz but that doesn't help
other things that I chaged are:
- cpu governor -> badass
- i/o -> noop
- active 'allow purging of assets'
anyone got ideas what could cause this? and how to fix
phone:
htc sensation xe, unlocked
hboot 1.29, radio 11.24a.3504.31_m
can provide other info if needed
It's easy to be fixed, install stock rom.

thank you, very helpful
What firmware are you on? Did you experience any of these problems on any other rom?
You say the dots connect themselves. As if the touchscreen is used? Sounds somehow like a broken digitizer.

Do you know how many threads like yours have been opened recently? Is it that hard to search and why do you expect flawless rom?
When will people learn, it's unofficial, it's custom, it's a new android version tied to the old hardware with the old drivers, it will, probably never be perfect.

I must have missed all of these threads. There were some threads about cm11 but they had other issues.
This phone is 3 years old and you're using Badass. Since you want more performance, set your CPU governor to Ondemand and set I/O scheduler to BFQ or SIO.

ok, will try
atm had to move back to previous cm 10.1 based on 4.2.2 prepared few months ago, it appears to work much better but still have some stability issues. Doesn't look like problem with touch screen as most (now like 97%) it works flawlessly... yeah, not 100% so it could be hardware problem, just that didn't happen before
and yeah, I know these are unstable, beta like, etc roms - I like to test new features on my sens xe and one prepared by sultanxda is atm the best for me, keep up great work and thank you for time spent working on this rom.

Why not try my CM10.2 ROM? CM10.2 is far more stable than CM11, and, personally, CM10.2 feels smoother than CM11.
first of all - sorry for misinformation but I found cause of my problems with interface... looks like minimal amount of water must have got under the cover when I few days ago applied new screen protection, yesterday I got this idea of what could cause this sudden problems... few hours phone stayed on the room heater (not too hot ofc) and touch screen problems are gone! yeah, tbh I love this phone and was very angry thinking I'd have to replace it, now I don't have to
back to rom - atm back to your (sultan) rom based on CM 11 with update from 29.1.2014, it has some small problems but I like to test new features
problems I've found so far:
- less responsive and smooth
- launcher3 doesn't allow to create new home screens on the left, had to create new to the right then make some rearangments before I got things right
- some widget resize problems under launcher3
- other small problems all I can live with
but I like more available memory and better battery life, going to test ART soon
and it is good that messanging is back, hangouts is just... not for me
Why cant i find my phone contacts on SIM ??? Its say no contacts found? When i import some numbers from vCard from SD why cant i move them to SIM???
