Anyone know of a good app to use for the Nexus 5 built in pedometer sensor? Highly overlooked, but if low powered enough, might be interesting alternative to the Fitbits of the world. What apps would you use?

hmm...i thought only android 4.4 was getting support for this feature. I do not think the Nexus 5 actually has this chip....

Step Detector and Step Counter
Android 4.4 also adds platform support for two new composite sensors — step detector and step counter — that let your app track steps when the user is walking, running, or climbing stairs. These new sensors are implemented in hardware for low power consumption.
The step detector analyzes accelerometer input to recognize when the user has taken a step, then triggers an event with each step. The step counter tracks the total number of steps since the last device reboot and triggers an event with each change in the step count. Because the logic and sensor management is built into the platform and underlying hardware, you don't need to maintain your own detection algorithms in your app.
Step detector and counter sensors are available on Nexus 5, and we're working with our chipset partners to bring them to new devices as soon as possible.

Will this be with the Nexus 5? I'm interested to see if the step counter is accurate enough.
Also I wonder will this work with Google Now? They have a monthly step counter card.
Wouldn't it make sense for Google to incorporate this into an update to the My Tracks app?

Man that would be very cool; hopefully they do that!
Moves also tracks you via GPS, so it's going to still drain a lot of your battery. I'm waiting for another application to show up that incorporates this well, I don't really need the GPS part.

I heard https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runtastic.android.pedometer.lite should also work. Haven't tried it, yet.
Tried moves for 2 days, wasn't sure what was killing my battery, found out that was it. Uninstalled =(. Hoping they add support with Runkeeper!

honestly when i first saw the news with the screen shot of moves i thought that was a google now feature
Moves kill the battery.. Use lots of gps.. I use the runstatic pedometer

The wand in the middle (between the reminder finger and the three menu dots) lets you configure what shows up in Google Now. If you go into "Everything else" and say Yes to "Continue to get activity summary" I think it should start reporting it for you. Took me a while to re-find it, I was trying to find it in Settings.

Hmmm
everything else only has...from top down, weather updates for home, weather for work, temperature units, how do i commute, sports updates? how do i usually get around?.
seems more limited than the old phone's list of items.

This information isn't available unless you've turned on Location Reporting and Location History for at least one of your Android devices. If you've turned these on for more than one device, the Activity summary card reflects the one you used most often that month.

In the change log of android l it mentions it has okay Google with screen off. Does the nexus 5 have the necessary dsp hardware to make that happen?

nexus 5 does that already, as long as your plugged in. turn it on in the voice settings. funny thing though. you can say ok google when the screen is off, and search for anything, but it wont turn the screen on

Yeah that I know but the change log makes it sound as if it will be more like the moto x, where you wouldn't need to be plugged in.

I'm guessing the snapdragon 800 isn't capable which is why the moto x opted for at least the 801. Don't know really but I was hoping someone might know. Time will tell I guess.

Motorola uses the fabled "low power core" to run active display and touchless control. Without that, both features will destroy any devices battery.
Just like the N5 has a pedometer running in a similar way. LG has tap to wake, as does the M8. That's why tap to wake is a huge battery drain on the N5.

Double tap to wake drains on the Nexus 5 because you can't just keep the digitizer on, you have to keep the entire panel on. On devices where it doesn't drain, you can power them on separately. Nothing to do with the low-powered core.

800 is just as capable as the 801. Low-power core is just used for a hardware pedometer instead of "always listening", as well as legal issues if you were to enable it without permission.

Alls I know is I have it now and it's terrific. ?
I guess we'll find out soon. Android L is being released Friday for the n5 right? I guess there is no plausible way for lollipop to change the function on the low power core on the n5 to use it for listening instead of a pedometer.

But yeah. The low-powered core is only good for things that usually require wakelocks (i.e. always listening, music playing, hardware pedometer). Screen-off gestures are done at kernel level and does NOT require a wakelock, so the low-powered core is completely useless in that regard.
Only factor determining if screen-off gestures drains or not is how power is provided to the panel. If it's possible to power the digitizer on separately, then it uses less battery. If you have to power the entire panel on, it'll use more. Either way, it's the exact same thing and not really done much differently across all devices; just make sure the digitizer is powered in any way and wake the device (or whatever) on specific gestures.

I doubt the preview will have all the features. From the looks of it, it doesn't even have most of them. They're saving it for the official release. The preview didn't include the new/updated apps either.
Anyway, the N5 isn't likely to get the feature you're asking about. It has to be enabled and setup with the processor's low power core. I don't think this can happen through an ota. From what I've heard it'll just be the new devices receiving that feature.

Even if your screen is off, you can say "OK Google" on devices with digital signal processing support such as Nexus 6 and Nexus 9

It does work on my phone, the thing is that have to hit the power button then the lock screen comes up, if you say "okay Google" it does work like call or text but still the screen remain unlock. I haven't tried doing "okay google", " unlock screen"

So when android 5 was announced they said that devices like nexus 6 and 9 will get the feature to double tap to wake and google now always listening even when screen is off.
Are there any news regarding these features on nexus 5? Does the new preview gives any information on this?

I will be getting a note edge and currently my wife has a LG g3 and I love the knock knock feature to turn it on. Does anybody know if the note edge has a similar feature to knock or swipe the side edge screen to turn it on? If not I plan on developing an app to accomplish that, if the sdk allows.

I tried but nothing worked. Then again there may be a particular way the swipe gesture works?? I can tell you that the edge screen wakes up if you just rub it right to left.

Wouldn't the screen have to be kept on ?! I don't mean physically on but wouldn't a layer of the screen have to be on because so it can register input whilst the screen is off ?!

yea it does but probably not enough to matter.
Its a standby mode. Any phone that uses knock to wake, swipe to wake, voice etc... will have the sensors in stand by.

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised that this kind of app isn't already out. OEMs have released this feature with some of their flagships but why isnt it more mainstream.

I would say this regarding battery drain... I have not rooted my wife's G3 and she uses the knock knock feature roughly 100 times per day lets say on average. Her battery has never been less than 45% with super heavy usage. Usually around 73% by the time she gets home at 5:15.
She plays games, Keeps the brightness on 90% (no auto), checks emails/texts/IM a bunch, pinterest, facebook, keeps the gps on, bluetooth off. So I would say it doesn't drain the battery enough to complain about if barely at all. Now, maybe LG built this feature into the firmware or something i don't know about, where it doesn't need the screen and maybe it uses one of the ICs that detect vibration or something.
I was hiking the slot canyon in Anza yesterday and when I finally got back to a restaurant, I realized the phone , which I'd never enabled anything in particular on, had counted all my steps and several other things.
Does anyone know how to disable step counting on emui 5? I've done all the obvious things, like "disable step counting". Thanks. I don't care how many steps I've taken, only that I arrived.
Also: I meant to mention this but forgot. The camera works great for me, but that isn't good enough for the Honor 8. After I've taken some pictures, about 3 hours later, it always pops up a notification that says "I've finished enhancing your picture of _____" . What if I don't want an enhanced picture? Is there a way to turn off all this irritating crap? Thanks again.

If you are referring to the step count being displayed on the lock screen then you disable it through the screen lock settings. Otherwise, I believe it's in the Health App itself.
Not sure about the photo enhancing. Never seen that one before.
What app do tell you about step counting.
Plus, clear data and cache of the camera app and see if the pop-up is still present

In mm it doesn't not have build in only nougat but i like that app so when i was testing nougat i backup that app to my MM
I removed the app as soon as I found out it was still counting my "steps" when I was sitting in the bus...

Well, I forgot the name, it was the Health app (HiHealth or something). Try to find it and open it, you will find all your steps and lots of other information about your "health".

The only fitness app I can find is called "google fit". I've disabled it. However, the steps are still there after disabling them on the lock screen & disabling the fit app, so I think it may be a bug or else there is another counter that just keep going. It's not that bad and it doesn't eat up any noticeable energy.

I just realized I had an app called "Health" and disabled it, and now it is gone from the lock screen. The lock screen setup doesn't work for turning off steps (or not showing them). The app was located in the /system/app folder as hw-health-midware.apk

Probably doesn't matter what my frd-l04 came with that I bought from newegg that I use on ATT. It matters more that I updated to Nougat and that's the beta which had the health app in it. On marshmallow, I never had the step counter or the health app.

I probably just don't recall it from Marshmallow since I updated the first day I got it. The good news is that it's called "healthd" and can be disabled and deleted as can all their crapware if desired. I just did that and I'm not rooted yet.

What I can confirm is, the huawei health isn't present in MM on FRD-L04 (US version)

I took it off the charger around 6am, streamed music almost the entire day. Made phone calls, played some games, etc.. and just put it on the charger around 7pm.

How different is it from what we have natively (turning on when picking phone up)?

I don't use face unlock so I don't know about that.
Double tap on AOD screen, apply fingerprint, boom your in. Works great.

If I don't notice any issues after a couple days I don't go looking at what's using what.

Not much difference at all really. Just that you have AOD. Double tap, unlock, no problems.

If you could screen record your AOD settings and post it to YT or here in the group I'd owe you big time. I couldn't get the sloppy UI to work for my OP and it gave me a headache so I just gave up. Maybe a how to video on YT would be amazing. TIA if you get a chance

I gave it a try after learning about it from reading this thread and overall it's great, except for one flaw...
I like having lift to wake so I can use my fp to get into my phone. This AOD requires a double tap to wake.

I found this used about 30%+ of my battery yesterday when I had it on all the time, heh. Also automatic face unlock (where you hit the side button and it auto unlocks) does not seem to work but you can still double tap then hit the face unlock button. Seems like at that point you would just use the fingerprint unlock. It does have a lift to wake option but I could never get it working (the AOD would never turn on when the feature was enabled). I ended up setting it to only be on when the phone is charging and works great on my charging dock so I can see important stuff while in bed. It is a beta so hopefully there will be some improvements in the future.

Yeah if this app switched over to the stock ambient display on lift, it would be the perfect AOD solution in my opinion.

Always on. I actually started using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newgen.alwayson
I think it uses a little less battery, has way more features, and is a lot less buggy.

Its a good app but sadly auto lock dont work and also when the AOD is activated, it messes up the phone's screen on time as well because it's taken into account. Used the premium version for quite sometime now
