Options on Transitioning to Korea with Nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically I'm getting stationed in Korea in 2 months. I'm on Sprint currently. What are my options on getting the Nexus 5 and getting good data over there? Using international maps, TMobile seems like the only ones with good rates and decent coverage although only 3G.
Is it better to wait and get a Korean company?
Thanks for anyones time in replying.

Anyone know that can help?

If you are stationed in Korea, you will need a Korean company. T-Mobile's new free international data roaming is only valid for trips under 6 weeks.

Also the US version of the Nexus 5 might not support Korean LTE frequencies. You need the international version that will be sold outside the USA.

I suggest buying the phone in Korea. Most of their phones have insane download speeds. I might buy one there if I have to live there again

That is one option but not the best if you like custom ROMs.
Since you are going to be stationed there just bring your device to the shop on post or a local shop if they can't do it. All that has to happen is they will register your mac address so it is allowed on whichever carrier you sign up with.

Official Canadian Galaxy S4 Owners Thread [Availability, Discussions, Help, Tips etc]

You may’ve heard that carriers all around the globe where Samsung Galaxy S4 has been launched are struggling to keep up with the enormous demand. In Canada, we’ve seen TELUS offering $50 $100 credit to customers willing to wait for two weeks to get their unit.
Samsung Canada is well aware of the problem not just TELUS but all other operators in the country are facing – there are still not enough Galaxy S4 units out there.
Those who pre-ordered Sammy’s flagship should be getting their phones now. That “should” is there because not everyone will get it at the same time. Pretty much all Canadian carrier issued a statement saying that pre-registration numbers are higher than any other device before, including the S3.
Samsung on its behalf is asking users for understanding. Here’s what they said on Facebook:
Samsung is excited to see the level of pre-orders that Canadian consumers have for the GALAXY S4. Samsung Canada had intended to ship pre-orders by the 27th, but due to the overwhelming global demand of the Samsung GALAXY S4, we will not be able to meet the pre-order date of April 27th for all customers. These orders remain the highest priority with carrier and retail partners and will be fulfilled in the coming days.
No doubt, this is a sweet problem for the Korean company and its shareholders…
Anybody got his hands on it??
I got my Telus galaxy S4 on Saturday at BestBuy.

I have one pre-ordered for May 3rd. Was told it may come sooner, on May 1st.
Would like to see if I can get my hands on one for Bell asap.
OT: should we be discussing the Canadian S4 in the ATT S4 forum now? Seems that info for us is all over the place now:

Can you comment on whether the Telus bootloader is locked? Have you tried to root with the "AT&T" exploit?
I have not attempted to root yet. I do not think the bootloader is locked through. I will root when a custom recovery is avialable and stock rom is as well.

I don't blame you I believe you can tell if the BL is locked by booting into the (stock) recovery? I'll feel much better if Canadian BL's are unlocked as I know I'm going to hate Touchwiz and there's plenty of talk about lag.
There is no lag on my telus s4. There is only one carrier app. The at&t version I hear has lot of bloat. My s4 is lot faster
Than my note 2 and just as smooth.

I don't believe we'll be receiving the i9505 in canada. The i9505 only houses LTE Bands 1800 , 2100, 2600, 800 , 900. It's missing 1900, so chances are we are getting the SGH-i337 and i337m which support our LTE freqencies in Canada.

But they don't have the same phone model. As you know it's I337 vs. our I337M and bootloader locking comes down to the carrier.

Yes, but my point is that their bootloader being locked is due to a request by AT&T. We do not know if the Rogers, Bell, and Telus requested locked bootloaders yet.

The Canadian carriers might not lock their devices, but if they do, the ATT unlocking method (if/when it comes) will apply to us. Thats why we should be watching that forum much closer than this one.
This thread really is in the wrong forum; what will be released in Canada will have very little to do with the device listed at the top of these forums (the Exynos S4). If you are Canadian I would stay very far away from any exploits posted over here.
Well, to get back on-topic, I just received an email from Fido saying my phone has been shipped to my local store by UPS. I am guessing it will arrive tomorrow.
My position on the reserve dropped from 268 to 263 on launch day at Rogers but I've been sitting at 263 ever since.

I need help with some questions I have

Hey everyone I have a couple questions that I need answered if possible. My in-laws are moving to China in August. They have Verizon right now but are gonna put their account on hold since global costs to much. When they move over there they will be just getting SIM cards and new phones. My mother in law wants to know how much an iPhone would cost her there? I'm pretty sure she doesn't want any other phone Lol. We googled about how much in China it would cost, but couldn't find any good info. I know I could just Google everything ya ya I know this Lol. I just know this is a great place to ask questions about phone stuff. My father in law will have an android phone, not sure which one just yet.....I'm basically asking someone who has had to do this before or knows about any of this. Or if there are smarter options for them that is the cheapest bet or whatever, that would be great. I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a couple mins to help me out. It would be a huge blessing....thanks!!!

Being that she is on Verizon here in the states, she can't unlock her current phone... Verizon and Sprint are on CDMA networks, the phone on these networks can't be unlocked... Now At&t and T-Mobile, they can... Any GSM network phone can be unlocked... At&t well unlock your phone, if you want it to be unlocked after your contracts up... I'm sure their not tech savvy, even with a unlocked phone, there's some tweaking you got to do, to the settings to get everything to work on any particular carrier... So you might have to help them with that, if they get a unlocked phone... Maybe what you might want to do is, figure out what carrier their thinking of using there, then search for phones on eBay, Amazon, and other smartphone selling websites...

About to get Google play edition HAVE 1 question

I know the playstore nexus 5 doenst support wifi calling with T-Mobile sim.
But my question in theory is ... if I root do and will T-Mobile Branded n5 roms work on the play edition N5 ... with WiFi calling ?
Seeing like how we can flash T-Mobile roms on att htc one or s4 and get wifi calling since its baked into the Roms?
Seeing as its unbranded phone one would assume this is already a possibility if not yet already
I havent seen any mentioning but wanted to ask before I buy it.

There is no such thing as branded or Google Play Edition Nexus 5.
There is only the one Nexus 5 like you can get from the play store.

His response is on point. There are no tmobile versions of this phone, therefore there are no tmobile roms for this phone, therefore no tmobile wifi calling is possilble.
So we can flash T-Mobile roms on the google play nexus Not the carrier branded and it still wont produce wifi calling

Lulz there are no T-Mobile roms. There are custom roms such as Cataclysm, Mahdi - ROM, and others, in addition to other AOSP based roms, but no roms from T-Mobile. The n5 you buy from T-Mobile is the same phone you buy from Google play
Your phrasing is a little abrasive, just saying.
But why is the t-mobile rep telling you it supports wifi calling? You should ask the rep. Clearly the rep is misinformed.
It is a feature on a tmo branded device. This is not a tmo branded device... The moto x is another non branded tmo device. Sadly it only works on to branded phones... Ones that have to branded Roms. I don't even think the iPhone 5/c/5s has WiFi calling either.

Let's clarify something here: there is only one version of the nexus 5 (OK 4 if you count colors, and storage space )
Whether you buy the phone on contract, off contract, from retail store, or Google play store, your getting the exact same phone. An already carrier unlocked, bare bones android experience (which in turn allows you to customize your way and not be limited by bloatware). No specific carrier software gets pre-installed.
So no specific T-Mobile software gets preinstalled. Unfortunately I don't know if there's a way to add support for what you asked, as I don't have T-Mobile or know anything about it lol.

I already knew the answer, but thanks for answering this poor guys question the way it should have been answered in the first place! It's a shame that it's not as easy as baking the WiFi calling feature into a custom ROM. Or better yet it's a shame nobody has been able to do it... yet. It would give me a legit reason to root!
On the old G2x they were able to include wifi calling on Aosp roms. So it can be done, not sure if it's worth the time to find out

OP, I think you're confused by the fact that there are no variants of the N5 like there are with most phones. Let's take the Galaxy S4, for example. There a Verizon variant, a Sprint variant, a T-Mobile variant, an AT&T variant, an international variant, and a Google Play Edition variant (and probably others).
With the N5, there is ONE (1) variant (yes, I realize there's an international version, but for the purposes of this post it's not relevant). Whether you get the phone from Google Play, Sprint, Best Buy, Amazon, or somewhere else, you're getting the exact same phone. Since there are no variants of the phone, there are also no carrier-specific roms like you would see with other phones like the GS4. There's also not a Google Play Edition N5 - it's just the Nexus 5, period, end of story. I realize that it's a difficult concept to get your head around, because I can't think of any other phone that's been made and marketed this way, but there ya go.

Difference between Google play Nexus 5 and t mobile nexus 5

I'm going to be purchasing a Nexus 5 soon, and I will be using it on t mobile. But I was wondering if there was any difference between the one Google sells on their website or the one on t mobiles. yeah it has cdma and gsm hardware and i don't see multiple firmware build numbers out there so there aren't carrier skins and apps.. they all have everything needed for sprint, att, or t-mobile as far as what the phone needs. but maybe only the sprint ones are registered on the sprint network with the imei or whatever. verizon is not supported.
more than this, the modem is the same for both models (d820 and d821)! this is really cool, so i can use the .15 modem in germany and have a better signal. originally this modem was for the d820 (north america). i think the only difference are hardwarebound frequences.
