I need help with some questions I have - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone I have a couple questions that I need answered if possible. My in-laws are moving to China in August. They have Verizon right now but are gonna put their account on hold since global costs to much. When they move over there they will be just getting SIM cards and new phones. My mother in law wants to know how much an iPhone would cost her there? I'm pretty sure she doesn't want any other phone Lol. We googled about how much in China it would cost, but couldn't find any good info. I know I could just Google everything ya ya I know this Lol. I just know this is a great place to ask questions about phone stuff. My father in law will have an android phone, not sure which one just yet.....I'm basically asking someone who has had to do this before or knows about any of this. Or if there are smarter options for them that is the cheapest bet or whatever, that would be great. I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a couple mins to help me out. It would be a huge blessing....thanks!!!

It's not a option to buy a unlocked phone here, and use a Sim card from there?

Ya I'm not sure. I think she told me she can use her iPhone there. It just needs to be unlocked or something. That's why I'm asking about all of this lol

Being that she is on Verizon here in the states, she can't unlock her current phone... Verizon and Sprint are on CDMA networks, the phone on these networks can't be unlocked... Now At&t and T-Mobile, they can... Any GSM network phone can be unlocked... At&t well unlock your phone, if you want it to be unlocked after your contracts up... I'm sure their not tech savvy, even with a unlocked phone, there's some tweaking you got to do, to the settings to get everything to work on any particular carrier... So you might have to help them with that, if they get a unlocked phone... Maybe what you might want to do is, figure out what carrier their thinking of using there, then search for phones on eBay, Amazon, and other smartphone selling websites...

I called AT&T. Then I told them I wanted the subsidy unlock code for my phone. They told me no at first. Then I explained I travel a lot. They asked a few questions like: did you pay full price for the phone; do you travel overseas a lot, etc. I said I needed it unlocked when I travel overseas. Three days later I had the unlock code for free. I think it all depends on who you talk to at AT&T, and if you have a plan with some international features I guess.

So is there no way to unlock a i727 manually without purchasing a code?
There's got to be a way guys...anyone..?
Where do all these website get these codes to sell from?
ATT will provide you with an unlock code free like the previous posts, I think there's an amount of time you have to wait though. Not sure if its based on how long you've been a customer or how long you've had the phone.
Give them a call or get a hold of a live chat rep on their website, that's where I received my unlock code for my Xperia Play before I sold it.

[Q] Insurance claim

Ok i made a loss claim on my sgs4g on tmobile after three days of not having a phone and wondering where the hell it was. That said, i have since recieved my insurance replacement. Today I was cleaning out my car (a weekly ritual) and found it beneath the passenger seat. My question is simply what do i do with it? It is a gsm phone so no blacklisted esn, so can i sell it or give it to a less fortunate friend to use? What are my options?

Anyone?

You should ring your insurance company and ask them what to do. They may say to just forget it, but they may want you to send it back to your provider. Either way you've done the right thing so there's no comeback. After all, you did get a replacement so they played their part. Now it's your turn

Just because it's a GSM phone doesn't mean it can't be blacklisted.
T-Mobile will blacklist the IMEI if the device is reported as lost or stolen.
As Archer has suggested, just phone up your insurance company and ask them, however, don't expect the phone to work for very long.
I had unlocked it, does that matter? btw im not sending it back.

If I were you I'd give it to a friend or use myself , try to change imei if possible. ( No idea how )
Some people really get lucky , I damn with I had sgs just lying around.

Sim unlocking is purely allowing the device to accept sims from another network.
IMEI changing is certainly illegal in the UK and I'm pretty sure it is in the US and Canada.

Sell it to someone overseas, these go for 150-165 in xda marketplace, so a blacklisted one for 50-80 is fair enough.. have a small party with the cash and forget about it!!
Pm me because I'm overseas

Phone Esn?

Hello I just bought an s3 from tmobile and it's brand new in box I bought it with contract and can't pay for the bill due to some job trouble and I was strolling to the marketplace here in xda to sell it, but in some topics I read that if you don't pay for your bill the phone Esn will be blacklisted and people won't be able to get service with the phone, is that true? Does that make my phone worthless even though it's bnib? Thanks for reading

It's GSM so they CAN'T blacklist it. That only applies to CDMA devices (Verizon, Sprint, Boost Mobile, Cricket, Virgin Mobile, etc.)
So I can sell it without the buyer worrying about anything

[Q] Can I sell a subsidized phone, without fees from carrier?

Just wanting to know if anyone has sold a new phone you got a subsidized price on. I currently have a S4 and want to sell it, will ATT give me a problem when I add another device to my account that is not a S4? Thanks!
This forum has some questions and answers related to your question: slickdeals.net/f/3732040-verizon-phone-upgrade-can-i-sell-the-subsidized-phone-for-a-profit
Still not clear, but thank you. I will be making a profit from the sale of the phone. I'm worried that when I purchase a new phone, and activate it with ATT I will be flagged since its not the phone I originally purchased. Anyone with anymore insight care to chime in?
I dont think it should be a problem just tell them you bought another phone to use whe you go abroad. As long as you still pay your bill should be fine

That's awesome! Though, I don't think anyone looking for a new S4 should count on MDL phones as even a remote possibility. You probably got one of the last MDL phones outside of the used market.

Yes, definitely. On the side of the box with all of the barcodes. It will say the firmware version.

I just called AT&T about my speratic reboots on my phone. He did some reset on his end, he told me it might have fixed it. I told him if I elected to have it replaced could I request a replacement phone with firmware MDL? He said that's a different department but he recommend that I go to my local store and have it replaced there if I choose that route. The odds that the store has one is quite slim I'm sure but worth the time since I see that ppl still manage to get one from time to time. First thing I guess I'd need to do is remove root from my current phone, head over, tell them my issue, refuse a master reset (last time they reset my phone I lost everything, including my sdcard...never again). They should then offer me a replacement, I ask for a MDL model, I tell them how to tell. If they don't have any which I'm sure they don't, would I receive another MF3? My store is actually pretty cool, I may just walk in an ask if they have any MDL's...if so than I'll about getting an exchange.

The more I think about it, really whats the point. I asked here the other day "is locked boots the new norm" all so far have said yes, as far as version and AT&T goes. Even if I get a MDL model, im still getting an upgrade next summer...Ill have the same issue then as I'm sure we all will. Its a dark time. I'm sure we'll always have root but flashing custom Roms is what we all what (safe assumption). If this is the case and the modding community is as large as I think it is, I see the 2 carries taking a large hit in sales due to their nonsence. Sorry guys, had to vent

I went to my local Wal-Mart today and they actually had a brand new MDB. The first released. But they wanted $700 for it new. I told them they were crazy and that att sells then online for 500
