Hi all. Just finished ordering this tablet that is currently running cupcake. Would love to root it and install a custom ROM. Any info on how I can achieve this?
Thanks in advance
offtopic... does the apad run any good? is it smooth?
Why is it off topic. It is a tablet that runs android. Do not have it yet so can't comment on how good or bad it runs.
i was asking an off topic question (i.e. not related to your question). guess i phrased my sentence wrongly. do post here on how well this device seems to perform.
I will. Thanks for your intrest.
You should of waited for the Notion's ADAM
I only paid $100.00 US for my tablet. This one is considerably more.

hey could you pm me the site where you purchased it from?
could you update your main post with the specs that you ordered from? Apparently there are Apad clones with crappy processors instead of the rockchip processors
Dealextreme has it for cheap
dealextreme is the crap version. the proper apad is the one with rockchip in it. and i found out that the cheapest apad with rockchip is ~150usd
i have one of those too.
with the rockchip which actually is not to bad of a processor. nowhere near the A4 but ok to work with.
it's an ARM derivative and consists of a cpu and dsp(gpu).
i would also like to know if anybody has played with it yet.
i followed the android instructions of building a development envirnment and have the tablet actually show up in eclipse but where to go from here?
sorry for threadjacking a bit
i would first of all like to be able to upgrade android. if possible 2.2 or at least to 1.6.
the device has the upgrade locked.
the are also language option conflicts were suggestive text and some keyboard keys still show up in (i guess) Chinese.
It'll most likely be impossible to upgrade the apad to 2.1/2.2 as rockchip dsp isn't actually a gpu, its a video processor for videos only.
on another note i have decided to pass up on the apad as it doesn't seem that "future-proof" most likely will get this http://www.wiipad.us/product.php?id_product=11 unless better options come out in the next 1 month or so
does android 2.x require a specialized dedicated gpu?
the dsp is essentially a gpu, it is capable of playing 720p video.
it should be plenty for android 2.x to get around
so i can move files from the device to the pc.
i copied the data and system folder.
what to do now?

Yeah but it decodes videos only, a gpu actually pumps out the graphics which is an intergral part of 2.1 onwards (also in the rockchip's specs i saw somewhere this chip does not support 2.1) The wiipad neno has a cortex a8 core which is similar to the ipad's processor so it is running on 2.1.

I have to ask: Why does everyone want a dual core phone which cant even currently be used?
I say it cant be used because dual core processors cant be used on Android 2.3 Gingerbread/Linux kernel 2.6.35, there is only multi-core processor support in A3H/L2.6.36 (only avaliable (officially) on tablets). We will see problably support in in "A4I"/"L3.6.37" for both phones and tablets.
So whats everyones obsession? The only thing you are problably gaining is a SLIGHT speed boost (not even close when a kernal that supports it is released) and more battery drain.
On a counterside this could bring good marketing to Google: They release "A4I", current dual core phones get a HUGE speed boost and everyone praises Google. Could work good for them.
Interesting, I never knew Gingerbread couldn't support dual cores on phones. Good info, I guess I'll keep my Evo for another year.
It's pretty easy to compile the kernel to use multi core processors. The current one may not, but hold your judgement until it's actually released.

So true............. Currently 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of users AND developers of applications can and are willing to complie a custom kernel not used by the rest and use/make multi core supported applications with its multi core supported kernel.
I guess progress has to begin somewhere?
i don't think i'll ever need / want a dual core phone for my daily rutine, my SGS is perfect for me, what more could you need from a phone? don't think they'll be able to fit jet packs on them any time soon...

What I'm saying is the kernel can easily be compiled by Google or Samsung and used as the stock kernel on the GSII.

Honestly those arent needs either. But as of right now the only purpose of a dual core phone is to brag.
I saw Skype updated to 2.1 today. My G2x is getting repaired so I can't try it, but has anyone been able to confirm if video works on this version?
No, It doesn't work. They have made it work with the Sensation and other phones release way after our G2X and the G2X is still not supported. What the hell? I am pissed as hell, I want to use it tooo...
That's really annoying. Skype is really the only reason I care about having a front-facing camera.

It's making me extremely mad. What video chat for phone-to-desktop actually works with this thing??? And now that Skype claims this will work on all 2.2+ devices, why is it not working on my 2.3.5 gb g2x?? Is it because the Tegra 2 doesn't have Neon support? Well neither does the Sensation's snapdragon... and that's officially supported. Come on, skype...

I tried Oovoo a short while ago, and had trouble with sideways video or sometimes no video at all. Guess I'll be trying again. And Skype should at the very least quit advertising that this works on practically all froyo+ devices... They need G2x support, and they need it soon. Taking their time has already earned them the low rating they have (or had before this release, fixing for many people) in the market.

The sensation's hummingbird does actually have Neon. Google sensation, hummingbird, neon, and you should see it. I always worry about posting links to outside of the forum, but it's easy to see.
They do claim it'll only work on 2.2+ devices with neon capabilities... I'm no electrical engineer or dev so I have no idea why both gtalk video and skype need it but they do.
Sadly it means it's not as easy as a build.prop fix. One day... or I'll just get a phone with tegra 3 when that comes along which has neon support haha.

Hmm, interesting. I remember reading somewhere on XDA that "Our friends over at the Sensation board are out of luck as well as the Snapdragon doesn't have NEON either."
Oops, sorry, I meant Snapdragon. Haha XD
I wonder if that guy is still right, though. If he is wrong, that explains why Sensation is officially supported while non-NEON t2 is not. But... If he's right, there is no reason why Skype doesn't support t2 and in that case a build.prop change or decompile and removal of the apk's device checks would work.
Got some looking up to do...

This may not be correct either, but I think it might be for hardware acceleration/an easier video processing library. I gotta look into that too.

I'm pretty sure Snapdragon doesn't have NEON. Qualcomm licensed the ARMv7 ISA only and not the Cortex-A8 or A9 designs(The Cortex-A8 introduced the NEON core FPU but you seem to know this). The ARMv7 ISA only mandates Thumb and such.

From personal experience of doing video encode from an Android device;FFmpeg, the open source library for video encode/decode is preferred on Android and is very optimized for NEON(TI is one of the main contributors for FFmpeg for ARM and all TI OMAP3 and OMAP4 designs have NEON). I'm guessing the video APIs for Android use FFmpeg so Gtalk and Skype would be reliant on these libraries.
However the Atrix got Gtalk so there probably is some workaround for this...

Ahh, OK, thanks for the clarification. So Skype has adapted an official certified version for non-NEON processors, meaning there shouldn't be much reason why they still aren't supporting Tegra 2.

That is correct, both apps rely on NEON and that's why previous ports failed. Atrix (T2) did get gtalk, so there is a new attempt underway. Have a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184999
There hasn't been too much progress (at least publicly displayed) or as much as the LG cam port attempt, but it's promising. And now that a version of Skype is availible for a non-neon processor, I'm guessing our wonderful devs will soon attempt to use the new libraries to make a working port. Let's hope for the best

The C2 model has an S3 CPU. The 'standard' has the S4 CPU. The S4 is much more desirable as it is faster, runs cooler, uses less power, and (if you care abou such things) has way more community support.

Em how? fps is crap on mine.
thx @ all, how can i recognize a C2 device from the original package?
from specs i see C2 (with S3 cpu) has 1.7Ghz while standard S4 (krait) has 1.5GHz
so if i see 1.5ghz on the box, it's the standard (better) one?
i had the OneX myself and loved it, swapped it with an iphone 4S out of pure economic reasons, but i remember it recorded 1080p at 24fps/~10mbps which was a bit crappy for bigscreen
on the device itself it was fine bitrate wise, but the FPS drove me nuts.
The 8X has 30fps, tested it in store today, it's very smooth.
I'm torn between those 2 devices now
btw i read the C2 didn't get the 4.1 JB update, is it true? will it ever get it?
Yes, look at the box. The model number for the S4 is Z520. S3 is Z560 i think.
And CPU Speed is as you said. You want the one with 1.5Ghz

Nothing wrong with the S3 model, if there was an S5 model the same people ^ would be saying the S4 was crap. My S3 was an import and considerably cheaper than the price charged locally. I'm very happy with it, good battery life, responsive, bright screen with great colours and it makes phone calls too!
Of course there are differences if you stack the phones side by side and run benchmarks but in day to day use you would never notice them. To find out which you have go to About Phone and look at Hardware information, If your processor says 1.5GHz you have an S4, if 1.7GHz you have an S3.

Obviously, since the S4 would be crap compared to the S5. Just as the S3 is crap compared to the S4.
But the biggest issue with the S3 isnt its hardware - its the custom rom/kernel scene thats the biggest issue.
At the moment the S3 is more like "what you see is what you get", while the S4 is "what you see is just a fraction of what you can get".
Also, ICS doesnt list the CPU Speed in the hardware info field. Maybe JB does, I dont know, but ICS does NOT.
Just thought Id point that out

A matter of perspective, when I buy a phone I look at the specs for what it has, not what I can turn it into. I've never flashed a rom yet that made spectacular differences to a device and to my mind flashing is only of use to upgrade a device that's older and not getting official updates.

Performance is better, as in it scores better in benchmark tests, not something I really notice in every day usage though.
Battery life is better for me, if I don't use the powersave option. Also having setcpu (or something similar) installed helps.

This is cheating but still that is not going to affect my descision to buy note3.
What do u guys think?
Yet people are still buying and will be buying samsung devices.
Oh noez, no 8 cores in your phone? How will we survive? Seriously, at some point cores will become ubiquitous, nobody will really care once the OS and software just uses available resources. We're getting closer, but I doubt your phone is doing anything that'd really require 8 cores to do.

Well HMP/GTS is not jus running all 8 cores at a time its about firing up the required number of cores in any combination of a7's and a15's currently afaik it cluster migration ( the worst implimation of big.littile).

I think Note 3 is running core migration, which is much better than cluster migration.

Wrong.Note 3 came with cluster migration.
The Note 3 is still running cluster migration and I'll doubt this will change anytime soon. Their drivers are still out of date for normal IKS so I won't even bother trying to get that running on a device I don't own. And frankly nobody else is interested in doing the work.
