I saw Skype updated to 2.1 today. My G2x is getting repaired so I can't try it, but has anyone been able to confirm if video works on this version?
No, It doesn't work. They have made it work with the Sensation and other phones release way after our G2X and the G2X is still not supported. What the hell? I am pissed as hell, I want to use it tooo...
That's really annoying. Skype is really the only reason I care about having a front-facing camera.
I know, Right?! Me too!

I've read several articles that says it has unofficial support for other devices, but I'm not seeing that option.

I've tried all the unofficial builds and none of them work with the G2X. Can someone make it work please! I really need video call on my phone....
Would editing the build.prop help? How else would Skype know?

It's making me extremely mad. What video chat for phone-to-desktop actually works with this thing??? And now that Skype claims this will work on all 2.2+ devices, why is it not working on my 2.3.5 gb g2x?? Is it because the Tegra 2 doesn't have Neon support? Well neither does the Sensation's snapdragon... and that's officially supported. Come on, skype...

I tried Oovoo a short while ago, and had trouble with sideways video or sometimes no video at all. Guess I'll be trying again. And Skype should at the very least quit advertising that this works on practically all froyo+ devices... They need G2x support, and they need it soon. Taking their time has already earned them the low rating they have (or had before this release, fixing for many people) in the market.

The sensation's hummingbird does actually have Neon. Google sensation, hummingbird, neon, and you should see it. I always worry about posting links to outside of the forum, but it's easy to see.
They do claim it'll only work on 2.2+ devices with neon capabilities... I'm no electrical engineer or dev so I have no idea why both gtalk video and skype need it but they do.
Sadly it means it's not as easy as a build.prop fix. One day... or I'll just get a phone with tegra 3 when that comes along which has neon support haha.

Hmm, interesting. I remember reading somewhere on XDA that "Our friends over at the Sensation board are out of luck as well as the Snapdragon doesn't have NEON either."
Oops, sorry, I meant Snapdragon. Haha XD
I wonder if that guy is still right, though. If he is wrong, that explains why Sensation is officially supported while non-NEON t2 is not. But... If he's right, there is no reason why Skype doesn't support t2 and in that case a build.prop change or decompile and removal of the apk's device checks would work.
Got some looking up to do...

This may not be correct either, but I think it might be for hardware acceleration/an easier video processing library. I gotta look into that too.

I'm pretty sure Snapdragon doesn't have NEON. Qualcomm licensed the ARMv7 ISA only and not the Cortex-A8 or A9 designs(The Cortex-A8 introduced the NEON core FPU but you seem to know this). The ARMv7 ISA only mandates Thumb and such.

From personal experience of doing video encode from an Android device;FFmpeg, the open source library for video encode/decode is preferred on Android and is very optimized for NEON(TI is one of the main contributors for FFmpeg for ARM and all TI OMAP3 and OMAP4 designs have NEON). I'm guessing the video APIs for Android use FFmpeg so Gtalk and Skype would be reliant on these libraries.
However the Atrix got Gtalk so there probably is some workaround for this...

Ahh, OK, thanks for the clarification. So Skype has adapted an official certified version for non-NEON processors, meaning there shouldn't be much reason why they still aren't supporting Tegra 2.

That is correct, both apps rely on NEON and that's why previous ports failed. Atrix (T2) did get gtalk, so there is a new attempt underway. Have a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184999
There hasn't been too much progress (at least publicly displayed) or as much as the LG cam port attempt, but it's promising. And now that a version of Skype is availible for a non-neon processor, I'm guessing our wonderful devs will soon attempt to use the new libraries to make a working port. Let's hope for the best

I'm starting this thread cause I'm curious what you have to say on this.
Qualcomm is talking much(especially lately) about their snapdragon platform and how great it will be, that it will play 720p videos with support for multiply codecs and that it will be 3D graphic 'monster', but lately I think that it lacks one very important function HDMI. I know that there isn't even one phone which has it(but more and more phones have TV-out and with the flood of HD TV's it's a must) but either there is one that is capable of playbacking 720p content and for now only tegra has HDMI which is something that puts a smile on my face. With it it can become ultimate PMP.
Do you think qualcomm should add HD out to snapdragon or leave it these way and wait for newer processor from snapdragon family?
Please answer maybe they will read it and they will add it

Hi all. Just finished ordering this tablet that is currently running cupcake. Would love to root it and install a custom ROM. Any info on how I can achieve this?
Thanks in advance
offtopic... does the apad run any good? is it smooth?
Why is it off topic. It is a tablet that runs android. Do not have it yet so can't comment on how good or bad it runs.
i was asking an off topic question (i.e. not related to your question). guess i phrased my sentence wrongly. do post here on how well this device seems to perform.
I will. Thanks for your intrest.

hey could you pm me the site where you purchased it from?
could you update your main post with the specs that you ordered from? Apparently there are Apad clones with crappy processors instead of the rockchip processors
Dealextreme has it for cheap
dealextreme is the crap version. the proper apad is the one with rockchip in it. and i found out that the cheapest apad with rockchip is ~150usd
i have one of those too.
with the rockchip which actually is not to bad of a processor. nowhere near the A4 but ok to work with.
it's an ARM derivative and consists of a cpu and dsp(gpu).
i would also like to know if anybody has played with it yet.
i followed the android instructions of building a development envirnment and have the tablet actually show up in eclipse but where to go from here?
sorry for threadjacking a bit
i would first of all like to be able to upgrade android. if possible 2.2 or at least to 1.6.
the device has the upgrade locked.
the are also language option conflicts were suggestive text and some keyboard keys still show up in (i guess) Chinese.
It'll most likely be impossible to upgrade the apad to 2.1/2.2 as rockchip dsp isn't actually a gpu, its a video processor for videos only.
on another note i have decided to pass up on the apad as it doesn't seem that "future-proof" most likely will get this http://www.wiipad.us/product.php?id_product=11 unless better options come out in the next 1 month or so
does android 2.x require a specialized dedicated gpu?
the dsp is essentially a gpu, it is capable of playing 720p video.
it should be plenty for android 2.x to get around
so i can move files from the device to the pc.
i copied the data and system folder.
what to do now?

Yeah but it decodes videos only, a gpu actually pumps out the graphics which is an intergral part of 2.1 onwards (also in the rockchip's specs i saw somewhere this chip does not support 2.1) The wiipad neno has a cortex a8 core which is similar to the ipad's processor so it is running on 2.1.

Has anyone had any luck getting the leaked 10.2 Flash player on Hero CDMA? If so, could you share what you did to get it working and what setup you have? If you followed a specific forum post, could you link it? I have searched but none of the forum posts here I've tried have worked.
I've tried changing the user agent in the browser, however, I could not find 'Desktop' as some of the other posts have suggested. At this point, I've tried installing the leaked version directly: no joy.
I'm running CM7 RC2 with no mods at the moment.

I should have been less specific in my use of the search tool. You are right. Hero is ARMv6 and Flash is compiled for ARMv7. Oh well, thanks for at least replying to me.
Now it would be nice if there was a module you could load into memory that would do machine code translation from v7 to v6... at least make it runable/compatible or make v7 programs 'think' they are running on v7. I'm sure that what be a nightmare of processor faults. And if it did run, it probably wouldn't be fast at all. Perhaps a v7 virtual machine? Again, another pipe dream because the Hero has less memory than a 486.
It's Adobe's fault anyway. A v6 plugin would not be hard to compile from the source. Just set the compiler flags and go. Grrr.
Thanks again.
Your right it probably wouldn't be hard but I think they did it this way because on the hardware acceleration side phones with v7 usually have the resources to spare to make flash run smoothly even flash lite is clunky at times on our v6 phones
They will chalk it up to delivering a consistent experience on their supported devices

samsung moment is ARM11 which is ARMv6... not v7
I learned this one the hard way...
At first glance, ARM chip designations can be confusing but the difference is the ARM Family version vs. ARM Architecture version:
Note that architecture version names contain a 'v' and the family version names do not:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_processor#ARM_cores
The Hero and Moment are ARMv6 architecture whereas newer phones are ARMv7.
It sucks, d00d! You are SOL just like me and many other Hero owners.
EDIT: Technically: The one notable exception to the 'v' observation is the ARMv5TE: Bulverde. But, heh, it works for me.

I installed CM7 and flashed GApps dated May 3rd,2011 and video is supposed to work but when I try to initiate a video chat I see a black screen for a second but then it goes away and it says calling... for a little while but then goes away.
When I try to initiate a video chat on my PC to my GTalk account on my phone, it says that I don't have video chat capabilities.
Is this just completely broken for the G2X ?

I've been researching this problem and it basically comes down to this. The GApps build dated May 3, 2011 isn't compiled as a universal app. It's only compiled for certain types of processors (neon board and ARM v7) while phones that have ARM v6 and Tegra (like the G2x) are out of the loop for now. When an official update for G2x comes out that updates to 2.3.4 then that will be another story. It will be possible to flash GApps for 2.3.4 that will support video chat.

I was just wondering, the viewsonic gtablet is a tegra 2 harmony device and the guys at team drh have made a kernel for ics that is fully hardware excelerated so my question is since the g2x is a harmony device can the drh kernel be used as a base for a working g2x kernel with full video decoding just like the gtablet???
Harmony is for tablets. We have Ventana.
Closest best is the ZTE Mimosa X which has ICS and the Ventana. When it drops hopefully we can grab the drivers from there.
From the 2x side:
msedek said:
If porting full working drivers were possible in any way from any device to make o2x runs with everything working on ics it should be done by now.. Al the things you are thinking now developers though about it long time ago... I'm developer myself.. Just not android developer.. I develop in assembler for microcontrollers as I am electronics engineer, and trust me there's nothing that I don't know about the chips I work on...
Every microcontroler (I'm specialist in microchip) has different libraries to access the different modules... As microchip produce open source libraries I can access all the functionalities in the processor and microchip provide the full pdf with the instructions set for every processor.. But even chips from the same family with a minimum variation like let's say pic18f478 to pic18f478a can have bunch of different modules with a bunch of different libraries...
So once I can develop a function out of the instructions set (what's called here from scratch) I can then develop a library wich I can call in my main software every time I want the processor execute an action... So in this case Nvidia won't provide their instructions set for their processors... They only provide libraries to oems... And oems can develop procedures and functions with these libraries...
That said Nvidia has no responsibilities here... Because no matter what os oems use the chips and the libraries are the same and the method to access chipset function won't change from one os to another... That's processor architecture and can not be modified..
LG has to re develop the function and procedures to work with the new os that is low level (assembler compiled) and embedded into the os... Those functions are way different from one device to another and it's not possible to use them unless it's the same exact chip family with no variants...
Devs here can not develop functions because they don't have access to the libraries... They only have access to the final product or what I could call the UI for developer.. And that's the DRIVERS..
That's it..
