Dumb Question on USB storage Apps - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When storing apps on USB storage and then re romming, I notice that I have to move the apps back over. Are the previously moved apps still on the USB storage or are they in a directory that is wiped when I wipe my phone to update the rom?
It seems Im constsantly running out of space now and apps wont update.
thanks

well i just move EVERYTHING thats not google to the sd.
My question is tho when I redo my phone does it know to delete those file from SD or should I go in somewhere and clear them before moving them again.
as for making more space, there is a tut on re partitioning but its pretty involved and I honestly feel like its not worth it in the end.
Sucks CHROME alone now takes almost 40mb on the sd..

[Q] Bare Minimum Files

As I'm sure most of us have been, with all the ICS Roms being posted as of the last couple of days, I've been a Flashaholic trying all these different Roms and so on and so on. Well, my question is...
I feel my Internal SD Card is getting full of folders that are becoming obsolete/redundant, so does anyone know what are the "Bare Minimum Folders" required to run correctly. IOW, I want to delete everything but the "True System Folders". I'm hoping that by getting rid of everything, it'll free up space, and speed the system up as a whole because it's not having to search a huge Index for where it's trying to pull info from to operate.
I personally feel like I can delete everything from there, with the obvious exceptions being the Files included in the Rom.. but once again, that's just my "Noob-ness".. lol..
As always any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would also like to thank anyone for their assistance in this matter in advance.
What I usually do to clean up is to go to storage in settings on the phone, and format usb storage. This keeps only the necessary stuff for system and gets rid of all of the extra stuff. I keep all of my files like music, etc on the ext. sd card, so it doesn't get wiped.

So after doing this do you have to go into recovery and re-flash the Rom? or will it automatically create the folders as you open the Apps?

Just to clarify, I'm talking about doing this in the rom and not in recovery. You won't have to reflash the rom, and apps will create what they need as you run them.

Oh, okay, I was originally talking about as your phone is running, go into Settings/Storage, and Format from there, but I didn't see that option. Lol..
So overall, I can delete anything I want to on the larger 13.03Gb and the smaller 1.85Gb internal sd card I can not delete anything from there because it's reserved for Apps and System Files/Folders.

Pretty much, but there are a few files that stay if you go the settings/storage/format route, so I do that to get rid of junk in the 13.03 GB partition. But you are right, you mainly don't want to delete stuff on the smaller internal partition, unless you know what you are deleting.

is there a rom where i can use internal storage

Well, i have 2gb sd card with the phone and its not enough. i have another 3 gb which im not using but i cant use it. Any way to get it or use it?
thanks
No, and you cannot use the internal storage for anything other than apps. It was never intended for anything other than that. it is not like a Samsung device which has internal SDcard storage space. And no there is not a way to format or in anyway make it work for anything other than app storage and installation.
This has been covered many times, please do a search before posting next time.

you can still push stuff to it with adb (/data)
I have put some stuff there, the problem is many apps will not read anything but the sdcard. so the data may not be usable

Yeah, that is the issue, it is really not a storage space like /sdcard is.
It is really not usable in a normal sense, and 4GB of app space and data is a total waste.
And from what I have seen in the HK ICS rom, it is still not the same as having an internal SDcard space like Samsung and other manufacturers do.
Could you symlink a folder on it to /sdcard-ext or something.

You have to wait ICS releases. I'm using the leak and it works fine.
Now there are several versions have ICS leak, it is sure that OTA will coming in a few weeks. (except the AT&T ones, sorry)

[Q] Clean Rom 5.0 and internal vs external SD card question

Hello all,
I have a VZW Galaxy S3 and am using Scott's CleanRom 5.0
I noticed yesterday that my internal card is 2gb from being full. My external SD is a 32gb and only has a few pictures and some music on it. So I have been wandering around the phone settings trying to figure out how to move my apps to the sd card and free up some space. Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.

The only app that works is link2sd, on the market. But one draw back is you need to reconfig your external sdcard to do this. Reformat and create 2 partions on your sd card, first partition should be fat32, this where you keep your stuff (music/video/pics) and the second partition is for your apps. link2sd will move your app to the second partition on your sdcard and create a reference so your OS would know where to find it.
Note: If you already have stuff on your sdcard, you can keep them by resize the first partion then create the second partion. This way you still have your data intact.

I think you are better off moving data instead of the apps. You can get your music, images, and videos and free up a lot of space (Samsung camera can default to save on external card, 4.2 Canberra doesn't have that setting as far as i can tell). Advantage of this is that even if you brick / break / wipe your phone you can still retrieve your images and music. Pop the card in a new phone and everything is still there. More than that, have titanium backup on the external card and easily transfer non-system apps to the new phone.

Let me make sure I understand correctly. The app will guide you through the partitioning process or is this something I have to do independent from the app?
Thanks in advance.

First I guess I need to explain that I still use iTunes in conjunction with Tune Sync for my music so back up isn't an issue for music. My photos are uploaded to SmugMug so they too are backed up. It just seems that my data and apps are hogging the internal SD.
I have TB Pro installed but admittedly don't know much about it yet as I have converted from the Dark Side (IOS). So, how do I get it to do what I need? Perhaps there is a tutorial somewhere on YouTube I could look up.
EDIT: I found the setting in Camera storage but no option to change it. I just says "SD Card" I assume that is internal SD?

You have to do it manually. It's pretty simple, may take around 20min. Just download the "gparted" iso image, then use imgburn to burn this image on your cd, reboot with cd as default boot device instead of your harddisk, once you booted into gpart operating system, there will be a gui you could use to partion your sdcard, first resize your existing partion, then create a new one from the unallocate partion as ext4. Remember both partion have to be PRIMARY and set the ext4 to boot (once you create the ext4, just right click, select flag then select boot).

click on the app you want to move then select "link to sd" button. Don't click on move app to sd, this is for the old GB rom only.

Thank you for all of this. I won't be able to do this until I return where I can burn the image. Looks fairly simple and I will give it a go when I return to work.
You could always plug your phone into your computer and drop and drag the files you want over to your external card.

You only can move video/music/pictures/backup files etc.. to your ext sdcard, but you cannot move your apps to external card. Your apps will stopped working. Link2sd allowed you to install all your downdoad apps to your SDcard (most of them, some apps required to stay internal, like widgets etc...)

I should have been more clear. What I suggested was just for backing up files in case the internal memory were to get wiped, example being if a new ROM was flashed with Odin, back to stock, etc. Thanks.

I did more research prior to moving them manually and found that what you just posted would have that affect. So, I still haven't done anything. My computer is old and not capable of burning a disc so I need to use a work computer but will have to do it after hours.
On a semi- related matter, since flashing CR 5.0 my settings for "Nearby Devices" is grayed out. I have been using this in conjunction with viewing photos on my TV. Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I re-flashed without success in gaining access.

I believe you need to install Allshare in order for this option to work.
Is there a way to download and install the Allshare app separately? I didn't choose it when doing the CR5.0 install. I looked on the playstore, but don't see it. I was going to re-install the ROM, but would rather just load the app if i could.
Only way I know is to flash ROM again. I don't use it. You don't have to wipe data just cache and dalvik.

Thanks for that information. I wonder if Allshare is available somewhere? Google is my friend...
This appears to be the Allshare app. It does everything the stock app did. I'll try it and report back.

Well, it was worth asking the question. I will be reflashing the ROM tonight. I just noticed a issue with what I believe would be the KindaCrap mods I installed. I removed the clock from the notification bar, and changed the battery to just a percentage, and the percentage was really slow while charging like it wasn't taking a charge. After rebooting I was near 60%, when it was showing me 20% before the reboot. I think a fresh install will be good.

Out of Space Error

Hi. I have a 16GB Galaxy S3 with a 16GB Micro SD Card. I had about 1.3GB of storage left on my device when I started to get this "out of space" error. I thought this was stupid as that's still a lot of storage. I deleted some apps, as suggested. I got up to about 1.7GB and it was still giving me the error. I decided to delete NOVA 3, which brought my free space to 3.5GB. For some reason, I'm *still* getting this error. I looked at other solutions, and I thought it would be good to get directory bind to free up some space on the internal memory. The thing is, I still can't install the app that will help get rid of this error because of this error. Pretty dumb. The apk is on my saved on the device and I can get to it via any file manager. Whenever I get the error, it prompts me to delete some more apps (even though 3.5GB is a ton of free space). Please help. Thanks!
Boot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache. Or go into /data/app and see if there is a odex file of the name of the app you are trying to install. If there is then delete it.
I have tried those solutions before and I just tried them again now, but they don't work.
Maybe the partition where apps install to is full?
How do I check that?

It's time to move pictures, video and downloads to your sd card. It put them in cloud storage or on your pc.

I would copy what you need to PC and reformat/wipe the internal sd, and system and then Immediately reflash rom. As there will be nothing to boot. :cool
I have copied all that I can to the SD card. The only things I have on my internal storage are apps. I don't have any pictures, music, videos, etc. 3.5GB should definitely be enough space to install this small app.
Something is seriously wrong somehow. I just freed another 2.56GB so that I have 6.1GB free. That's more than half of my storage free. I STILL cannot install any app from the play store or from my local storage.
Something is borked, do what prdog said and it will fix you up.

Back everything up that you need and Go into recovery and format/wipe Internal card and wipe/format system and reflash. Would not nand restre cause it will put back whatever is bad. There is no special app partition anymore. Can use as much as you have for apps. For some reason it is being blocked from external sources seeing it.

So I could still use TB? How would I re-flash after I wipe the internal card and system? I am currently unlocked, rooted, and running the stock android touchwiz rom. I'm on android 4.1.1. Would I have to re-root and unlock, re-root, or neither after I re-flash? Sorry that I'm asking you questions that are pretty easy. I'm just a relative novice and I don't want to mess my phone up. Thanks!
Could anyone help me with those questions? Thanks.
Could someone explain a bit more thoroughly? Thanks.
It would be much appreciated if someone could describe those steps a bit more clearly.

[Q] HELP! Insufficient Storage Space...11.24 GB Though

Hi all,
I already searched around and could not find anything close to a solution. I have a huge ANNOYING problem. I haven't had this issue until recently. Or rather, I haven't noticed it until now. I flashed a new ROM coming from CM10 thinking it was the ROM, but I have tried two different ROMs and still the same problem. WTF!? I keep getting the message "Insufficient Space available" error when trying to install programs from Google Play or trying to side-load.
For some reason I have two internal storages when I look under storage in system settings. One is 1.97GB and the other is 11.24GB. In the smallest one, I have 209MB available. WTF!? Yet the other has 11.17GB. It's to the point where I have only 9 progrmas installed! 9!! Something's got to be wrong here, Please help!
What's the deal!? Anyone have a solution. I have done a factory reset and cleared everything. Still nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated.
*temporary fix*
OK, so I went in and cleaned out the folder /system/lost+found
It had 1.6gb of used space. Deleted it all and now I have that space available.
The main reason for this being a temporary fix is because I still have two internal storages. So eventually the 2gb where all the programs are being installed into, will run out again. So then phone is not taking advantage of all 14 GB available for storage.
-Carlos
Did you wipe data and caches?
I had this problem before, where I had gigabytes of files in the lost+found folder, which would take up the internal storage where apps are installed. When I went to another ROM, I did a clean flash, and even though I restored all apps from Google, I had much more space available.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I did all that. Just like always. Even before I flashed the new ROM, I cleared cache and wiped data. Even did Dalvik cache wipe. Still nothing.Where is this lost+found folder you speak of. Maybe go into it manually. But still doesn't explain all that available space.

Wipe data from google play services, google play, and google services frameworks. Clearing the data also wipes the cache for you. To do this go to Manage apps>all and pick those apps. It'll take some time to resync all your google info but after that you should be good.
So I just had this problem yesterday and what worked for me is to wipe Everything, except for the sd cards. That should clear out the data that is from your last rom.

Actually the way to fix it is set "use rm-rf" options in settings in TWRP while flashing. I don't know why but make_ext does not work sometimes

I'll try that. Actually I got it to where I can actually install other rpogrmas. But the phone still has a 2gb internal storage and 11.4gb internal storage. Which is pretty frustrating. Did you wipe internal sd card as well or did you mean you wiped everything except both the internal and micro sd card?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
My solution was to disable Sync App Data in my google account as I logged into a factory wiped phone. I had Despicable Me 2 installed on my tablet, but even though it wasn't installed on my phone it was still syncing the 600 (SIX HUNDRED) MB of App data (videos I assume?!). There is no easy way to know which apps are doing this(abusing data sync), especially if you have multiple devices using the same account but different app sets. Wiping /data and making sure not to sync app data was the only thing that worked for me. Once you are in, you may be able to delete that app data by delteing the app from the 'My Apps' 'All Apps' section, but there should really be a better way to manage this data.
Did anyone come up with a permanent fix for this? I have tried flashing several roms several times and always end up with the split storage.

I haven't found a permanent solution, but you can install apps on the external SD card. I think there is an Xposed module that will force apps onto the sd card as well.
