As I'm sure most of us have been, with all the ICS Roms being posted as of the last couple of days, I've been a Flashaholic trying all these different Roms and so on and so on. Well, my question is...
I feel my Internal SD Card is getting full of folders that are becoming obsolete/redundant, so does anyone know what are the "Bare Minimum Folders" required to run correctly. IOW, I want to delete everything but the "True System Folders". I'm hoping that by getting rid of everything, it'll free up space, and speed the system up as a whole because it's not having to search a huge Index for where it's trying to pull info from to operate.
I personally feel like I can delete everything from there, with the obvious exceptions being the Files included in the Rom.. but once again, that's just my "Noob-ness".. lol..
As always any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would also like to thank anyone for their assistance in this matter in advance.
What I usually do to clean up is to go to storage in settings on the phone, and format usb storage. This keeps only the necessary stuff for system and gets rid of all of the extra stuff. I keep all of my files like music, etc on the ext. sd card, so it doesn't get wiped.

So after doing this do you have to go into recovery and re-flash the Rom? or will it automatically create the folders as you open the Apps?

Just to clarify, I'm talking about doing this in the rom and not in recovery. You won't have to reflash the rom, and apps will create what they need as you run them.

Oh, okay, I was originally talking about as your phone is running, go into Settings/Storage, and Format from there, but I didn't see that option. Lol..
So overall, I can delete anything I want to on the larger 13.03Gb and the smaller 1.85Gb internal sd card I can not delete anything from there because it's reserved for Apps and System Files/Folders.

Pretty much, but there are a few files that stay if you go the settings/storage/format route, so I do that to get rid of junk in the 13.03 GB partition. But you are right, you mainly don't want to delete stuff on the smaller internal partition, unless you know what you are deleting.

1. I have Samsung Vibrant and I like to know is it possible to just move everything from Android\data on internal to Android\data on external card. I tried to go to manage and move programs and from what I understand phone moving only program itself and not huge content folder that under Android\data. 2. I am using CM7 and for very long time I want to clean everything I got in my phone yet when I am doing reset cache and wipe user data EVERYTHING stays in there I mean how does this work at all ? Yes OS goes out but all my game files , pictures even some videos stays in there as well as folders from old programs and stuff. So my question is if I got to let's say Windows explorer and just ctrl+a everything and hit delete what will happen ? I mean basically my main goal is to get everything out form my phone EVERYTHIN,G is it possible ? Like with external I guess I can format it outside phone or even inside but how about internal ? I have about 140 folders in there right now half are .foldername and other half just some garbage programs and files that no longer in use.

I would hook it up to the computer and format both, then wipe in recovery. Then, I would think u would be fine. Tell me if you still have files.....

it will erase everything but the os. Yes all roms and backups will be gone. Everything will be erased. Probably just best to restart.

That really depends on the developer, if there is code to find the Data in the path to the external sd.
I would guess that most apps will not work by just moving the data to the ext sd.
You could try moving the directory and creating a symlink from the internal folder to the external one, so when the files are looked for on the internal sd, the ones on the external are automaticly used.
I would just find a random app and try it out, there is not much that could go wrong. In the worst case you just reinstall the app.

As said above, it really depends on the developer. I would only move them if they give the option or do it by going to settings and application. I would look up if the data can be moved though.

I still havent seen an answer for this issue, but I have over 6GB of Miscellaneous Files in Setting->Storage. nothing in there shows that much info, so I know its from loading different ROMs. I have no idea how to get rid of these files. Do you have a few nandroid backups? Those will register there. If you're using TWRP, there's a TWRP folder and you can remove them or archive them off. Clockwork is the same, I just don't remember offhand where it stores them.
If this isn't it, you can install busybox, and then either adb shell, or use a terminal emulator on the phone and run `du /mnt/sdcard -hl -d 1` you can then drill down to the directories which are the biggest offenders. Changing the 1 to another number increases the depth that it reports.

Okay. I finally managed to get this started. I went through terminal emulator and found that the /sdcard is only 7.6GB while the number in the main settings says over 10. /android has 2GB from some games, but I can't find anything showing where the 6GB of miscellaneous file is at. Even cwm is only 1.7GB from the one backup I have.

I've been fiddling with this for the last day or so and found that under miscellaneous file, System Memory now shows up as taking 3.67 GB of data. I've been looking everywhere to see where that much info could be, but I'm kinda stuck now.
I now know where that extra space has gone, but I have no idea how to free it up.

Galaxy S4 Miscellaneous Files: what and where are they?
So I'm getting a warning that the internal SD is out of memory, I've moved all movable apps to external SD, photos, music too.
Rooted and have TWIP as recovery *BUT* before I install a custom ROM, I want a backup *BUT* there's no room as the backup wants to use internal SD (not external)
Somehow Miscellaneous Files show over 8GB but in My Files it only shows about 200MB addressable (erasable). I deleted all Dropbox files and saved 200MB.
Where the heck are the other 7.8GB of files? How can I see them please?

I did this but didn't solve the problem for me. However, I did find a solution which worked for me. I used CWM, went in to the >Backup and Restore>Delete> and chose to delete all backups in the internal SD. Solved my problem

and go into the /data/media folder.
the troublesome files are there. Careful what you delete tho. For myself I had old remnants from another ROM and the entire rom zip file.

A lot of that is cached data for apps. If you use apps like gmusic, it caches music files to the device and that cache folder will grow. Root access will allow you to clear all your data es, including hidden files and that size will drop.

There's nothing in that folder.
So not that simple.
If you're rooted, get Cache Cleaner NG and let it wipe all that unnecessary data. I run it weekly.
With roms like gummy, you can click on Misc and see which app has all the data... It's likely something like Vine (it had a huuuuuuuge cache) or another app like gmusic.

I recently ran into a similar issue with my rooted nook tablet. It was killing my sd cards. When I put the sd cards in my laptop, I erased all partitions and that fixed them.
I used to be a moderator in a forum that helped people with car trouble. I have accumulated some good karma. please help me

I noticed yesterday that my internal card is 2gb from being full. My external SD is a 32gb and only has a few pictures and some music on it. So I have been wandering around the phone settings trying to figure out how to move my apps to the sd card and free up some space. Can anyone enlighten me?

The only app that works is link2sd, on the market. But one draw back is you need to reconfig your external sdcard to do this. Reformat and create 2 partions on your sd card, first partition should be fat32, this where you keep your stuff (music/video/pics) and the second partition is for your apps. link2sd will move your app to the second partition on your sdcard and create a reference so your OS would know where to find it.
Note: If you already have stuff on your sdcard, you can keep them by resize the first partion then create the second partion. This way you still have your data intact.

I think you are better off moving data instead of the apps. You can get your music, images, and videos and free up a lot of space (Samsung camera can default to save on external card, 4.2 Canberra doesn't have that setting as far as i can tell). Advantage of this is that even if you brick / break / wipe your phone you can still retrieve your images and music. Pop the card in a new phone and everything is still there. More than that, have titanium backup on the external card and easily transfer non-system apps to the new phone.

First I guess I need to explain that I still use iTunes in conjunction with Tune Sync for my music so back up isn't an issue for music. My photos are uploaded to SmugMug so they too are backed up. It just seems that my data and apps are hogging the internal SD.
I have TB Pro installed but admittedly don't know much about it yet as I have converted from the Dark Side (IOS). So, how do I get it to do what I need? Perhaps there is a tutorial somewhere on YouTube I could look up.
EDIT: I found the setting in Camera storage but no option to change it. I just says "SD Card" I assume that is internal SD?

You have to do it manually. It's pretty simple, may take around 20min. Just download the "gparted" iso image, then use imgburn to burn this image on your cd, reboot with cd as default boot device instead of your harddisk, once you booted into gpart operating system, there will be a gui you could use to partion your sdcard, first resize your existing partion, then create a new one from the unallocate partion as ext4. Remember both partion have to be PRIMARY and set the ext4 to boot (once you create the ext4, just right click, select flag then select boot).

Thank you for all of this. I won't be able to do this until I return where I can burn the image. Looks fairly simple and I will give it a go when I return to work.
You could always plug your phone into your computer and drop and drag the files you want over to your external card.

You only can move video/music/pictures/backup files etc.. to your ext sdcard, but you cannot move your apps to external card. Your apps will stopped working. Link2sd allowed you to install all your downdoad apps to your SDcard (most of them, some apps required to stay internal, like widgets etc...)

I should have been more clear. What I suggested was just for backing up files in case the internal memory were to get wiped, example being if a new ROM was flashed with Odin, back to stock, etc. Thanks.

I did more research prior to moving them manually and found that what you just posted would have that affect. So, I still haven't done anything. My computer is old and not capable of burning a disc so I need to use a work computer but will have to do it after hours.
On a semi- related matter, since flashing CR 5.0 my settings for "Nearby Devices" is grayed out. I have been using this in conjunction with viewing photos on my TV. Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I re-flashed without success in gaining access.

I believe you need to install Allshare in order for this option to work.
Is there a way to download and install the Allshare app separately? I didn't choose it when doing the CR5.0 install. I looked on the playstore, but don't see it. I was going to re-install the ROM, but would rather just load the app if i could.
Only way I know is to flash ROM again. I don't use it. You don't have to wipe data just cache and dalvik.

Well, it was worth asking the question. I will be reflashing the ROM tonight. I just noticed a issue with what I believe would be the KindaCrap mods I installed. I removed the clock from the notification bar, and changed the battery to just a percentage, and the percentage was really slow while charging like it wasn't taking a charge. After rebooting I was near 60%, when it was showing me 20% before the reboot. I think a fresh install will be good.
Hi. I have a 16GB Galaxy S3 with a 16GB Micro SD Card. I had about 1.3GB of storage left on my device when I started to get this "out of space" error. I thought this was stupid as that's still a lot of storage. I deleted some apps, as suggested. I got up to about 1.7GB and it was still giving me the error. I decided to delete NOVA 3, which brought my free space to 3.5GB. For some reason, I'm *still* getting this error. I looked at other solutions, and I thought it would be good to get directory bind to free up some space on the internal memory. The thing is, I still can't install the app that will help get rid of this error because of this error. Pretty dumb. The apk is on my saved on the device and I can get to it via any file manager. Whenever I get the error, it prompts me to delete some more apps (even though 3.5GB is a ton of free space). Please help. Thanks!
Boot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache. Or go into /data/app and see if there is a odex file of the name of the app you are trying to install. If there is then delete it.
I have tried those solutions before and I just tried them again now, but they don't work.
Maybe the partition where apps install to is full?

I would copy what you need to PC and reformat/wipe the internal sd, and system and then Immediately reflash rom. As there will be nothing to boot. :cool
I have copied all that I can to the SD card. The only things I have on my internal storage are apps. I don't have any pictures, music, videos, etc. 3.5GB should definitely be enough space to install this small app.
Something is seriously wrong somehow. I just freed another 2.56GB so that I have 6.1GB free. That's more than half of my storage free. I STILL cannot install any app from the play store or from my local storage.

Should I Titanium Backup everything and factory reset? I'm rooted and unlocked. I think that a factory reset would break root and maybe even the unlocked bootloader I have now. Thanks.

Back everything up that you need and Go into recovery and format/wipe Internal card and wipe/format system and reflash. Would not nand restre cause it will put back whatever is bad. There is no special app partition anymore. Can use as much as you have for apps. For some reason it is being blocked from external sources seeing it.

So I could still use TB? How would I re-flash after I wipe the internal card and system? I am currently unlocked, rooted, and running the stock android touchwiz rom. I'm on android 4.1.1. Would I have to re-root and unlock, re-root, or neither after I re-flash? Sorry that I'm asking you questions that are pretty easy. I'm just a relative novice and I don't want to mess my phone up. Example. I have

Why can I not just have a simple file system that I can understand! I seem to have issues with space because sometimes wiping the phone does not wipe the /sdcard/0 so I am working out of /sdcard/0 as opposed to the base of /sdcard
Any help? I am an idiot so explain like I'm 5, if possible.

this has some of the same stuff under it as /sdcard, but is a different file system
Why can I not just have a simple file system that I can understand! I seem to have issues with space because sometimes wiping the phone does not wipe the /sdcard/0 so I am working out of /sdcard/0 as opposed to the base of /sdcard
Any help? I am an idiot so explain like I'm 5, if possible.

5 year old explanation.
4.3 and above Android systems implement a multi user file setup similar to what Windows and OSx uses. The 0 folder is your account, your significant other could be 1, your dog could be 2, this keeps going depending how many users are registered to the device. It's actual intent is to use multi user on a tablet interface, not a phone, but because jellybean is used on both phones and tablets the file structure is the same.
Normally you don't have to worry about much of this, but if you came from 4.1 jellybean then multiuser wasn't implemented yet. This would double up your data in both places.
To me it sounds like you're OK, it's going to show double files because it's essentially reading the exact same folder, the format isn't going to understand what you're trying to do because it doesn't really know where to look for your data files. Basically, leave your 0 folder alone because that's where your data is supposed to be stored.
Was that 5 year old enough?
Edit: if you format your internal SD card in your recovery, then you'll erase the doubled data, and your folder structure will be repopulated under the 0 folder system. If you're running out of internal storage that's what you should do. Then clean flash the rom of your choice following the format.

Yeah! That's a pretty solid explanation! I couldn't seem to find anywhere that broke it down that way.
So let me ask one more 5 year old question.
I seem to have TONS of space used up on my SD card, that I cannot free up.
I have a 16Gig GSIII, when I attach my phone to windows, I have 7gb free of 12gb. I just wiped system, cache, and dalvik, and have a clean version of Beanstalk 4.4.2.
How am I using 5gb when the OS itself is only, ~199Mb.
Is there anyway to have a completely clean install? Even when I soft bricked, and then revived w/odin and an old kernal, I don't think it was totally clean.

So, to format it in CWM. I would go to
Mounts and Storage
format /data
or
format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)
i assume I don't touch
format /cache or format /system
and.. last thing I promise, how do I make sure I keep a copy of gaaps and a rom on the sdcard, if I format it?

You can't keep anything on the SD card after formatting, it'll be completely wiped clean, but you should do the second option. Also you should always format system when you clean flash a rom anyway.
I'd use an external SD card to flash the rom from. Alternatively, you could sideload the rom (if you know how). I don't know how.
