Security on/off. Allows you to access parts of the phone previously off limits.
GOOD: Run any Ruu, change hboot, basically do most anything to your phone.
BAD: Easier to brick your phone, if you make a mistake or something goes wrong.
Look at Moonshine or Facepalm in development section for guides to S-off

easier way to get engineering S-off?

hey i've installed a couple of roms on my phone then installed that stock att radio over one, it was great, nearly doubled my battery live and reception was excellent, but after trying miui and doing a nandroid restore of my old rom when i try to flash the radio again it tells me "FAILED remote: not allowed"
i see this tutorial here but im wondering if theres a gui one click for it and how come its not included with the S-off and rooting business?

this will give me not just eng s-off but engineering s-off? i already have S-off but need engineering to have total control of the radio

eng s-off is engineering s-off.
First thing if you aren't compiling a kernel and trying to run it then you should not eng s-off your phone there are other methods. (go to our dev section and look for the radio thread)
Second if you didn't know (could figure out) eng s-off is the engineering hboot then, you probably shouldn't try to mess with that level of the phone ... no?

Eng s-Off is completely unnecessary for the only level of radio control most of us mortals need... Flashing different radios.
This eng s-Off radio method, in all it's obsolete glory, sure has legs...
I'm sure it doesn't help matters that it still appears to be the "official" method over on the desire hd radio thread. There sure isn't any post here in the inspire sections that continue to endorse this method.
ok just tried this, when using the visionary app it didnt reboot when i tried permaroot so i rebooted it myself, then when using S-off one click it tells my my bootloader is corrupt
edit: computer had bad drivers worked with my other one thanks yall!!

[Q] S-on after s-off

So I am as excited as everyone else about s-off. Been waiting for awhile, but in the haste of everyone rooting their phone, I haven't been able to find a thread about restoring s-on in case of warranty work. Have I over looked something?
lots of views but no comments. This is from the IRC if interested
<splayer7> sorry if this has been asked, but what about resuming s-on for warranty work?
<hyuh> splayer7: no, not available

Exactly what has been said. There is no unrooting or S-On restoring at this time. I would just wait if you haven't already. HTC Released their source codes today. Its only a matter of time before an easier root is available with unroot, and S-on.
Was told that we could s-on by running the RUU. Here's a link to some I've found but haven't tested any of this. http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/06/htc-sensation-ruushipped-roms-packaged.html

do we have any confirmation on this working correctly
Tried it, resets your ROM but doesn't reset s-off
Guys.. There is about a 25% chance at best that HTC will actually check the boot loader status before providing warranty service. Even if you are unlucky and they do, if you make enough noise they might make an exception and let you off the hook. I think that as long as the issue that you are trying to resolve isn't a direct result of s-off or root, it should be fine.

Are you sure man? Somebody else above tested and found the opposite..
If the ruu is left untampered with, the boot image will be replaced with a stock one. Boot image is where your s-off lives. So in theory it should without a doubt work. You just have to make sure the boot image is in the ruu

I used the rom.zip file included in an untouched RUU, and I checked it includes HBOOT, also saw version change when I went into HBOOT.
It does NOT reset S-OFF back to S-ON.
I dont know if when you flash it reads S-OFF so keeps it, for users who genuinely had S-OFF?
I have personally tested this, and can confirm that using HTC's stock RUU does not return the phone to S-ON. However, it did remove the top area that says revolutionary, so now it appears as though I have a factory S-OFF device
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
bummer.. I really hope there is a way to reverse s-off, just in case. but then again, I do have insurance so I guess I could say it was 'stolen' if I really need to get it replaced

For those worrying about warranty issues..
You can try flashing the correct RUU for your phone.
IF that doesn't get rid of -revolutionary- s-off, then you can flash the ENG HBOOT (which gets rid of -revolutionary- but gives you ENG S-OFF) then you can flash the correct RUU for your region (which will definitely get rid of ENG S-OFF, and make you official stock HBOOT S-ON)
Click to collapse
Try flashing ENG HBOOT, then the RUU afterwards.
I am going to try to get my phone back to S-ON now, just to test everything
EDIT
Hmm, very odd indeed, after flashing the RUU I have 'stock' Radio S-OFF (no -Revolutionary-) , I tried fastboot oem write secuflag 1 and fastboot oem writecid HTC__001 but I am still Radio S-OFF.
Just so people know, flashing full RUUs, even HBOOTs do NOT get rid of Radio S-OFF. Thats why it is favored by people, it can only be turned S-ON specifically by tools which may be released for the Sensation in the near future. I thought these tools only sent the commands that I tried to change the Radio security status. It would appear not.
However
There is no need to worry, Radio S-OFF probably won't void your warranty (if you sent it to a HTC repair center), as long as you have the correct CID and ROM installed you should be fine.
If I remember correctly, with the past Android phones, some people randomly got S-OFF (like sensation users did) out of the box. The HTC repair center didn't care. They don't like custom ROMs, custom HBOOTs, rooted ROMs, etc

Permanant root without S-off

I was looking at the guide in the development forum, and I noticed step one is S-off, at the moment I only want permanent root on my sensation without S-off, is there a way to do that?
not possible
hmm that's disappointing, but at least it could be done now, thanks mate.
why do you want to avoid S-OFF? now that we have a path back to S-ON i don't see what would be holding you back.

well, S-off voids warranty. thanks for the link.
I believe rooting also voids warranty, so you shouldn't be rooting either then.

true but I reckoned it's sort of easier to unroot.
This is the same concern I have. From what I read, changing back to S-On isn't really that easy for noob like me. That's why all the more apprehensive.
Am thinking of sending my phone into HTC Care Centre to clean the speck of dust under my screen..

To S-OFF and to Root your phone, it is not very complicated, and after you can use really your phone.
After it is your choice, and it depends on what you want to do with it after.
In my mind, i want to be "adfree" and i want to use "setcpu", so it is enough to Root my phone, and if i have to S-OFF my phone to be "Permanently Root", i do it.

Stuck on HTC screen, can't unlock bootloader, can't root from Fastboot

I got a bricked T-mobile Sensation today at the shop and after checking it out I thought it would be easy to fix but unfortunately its proving to be much more difficult than I expected. Here's what I'm working with:
Locked s-on
Hboot 1.18.0000
radio 10.14.9035.01_m
First, I tried all kinds of PG58 zips. None worked. I figure I need to be unlocked to do it. Did the HTC unlock and got to the warning screen and where it asks to choose yes or no. I can navigate to yes or no but when I choose yes it just freezes and doesn't do anything. I tried it 3 different times, same thing. I can't even choose factory reset in Hboot, it just freezes. I don't know what the eff is going on. I've been downloading RUUs but have yet to find the correct one. I don't know what firmware it has because it does not boot up.
I thought, well shoot, I have fastboot, maybe I could just s-off and root from fastboot, but I can't find any thread explaining how to do it.
Any help would be great.
Thanks!
Edit:
Found the correct RUU, 1.50.xxxx whatever. WHen I run the utility It says its rebooting into bootloader but stays in the same screen and doesn't do anything. I don't know if this helps, but when I go into the bootloader I cannot go back into hboot. It just, freezes.
Have you tried this guide?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
And you need to be s-off to flash those pg58 zips, thats why they failed.
As you're on HBOOT 1.18.0000 use the revolutionary method to get S-OFF. http://revolutionary.io
The HTC unlock is a bit redundant as it doesn't give S-OFF which you need.
There are many guides here on XDA to help you. Such as:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
EDIT: Oops didn't notice that "Kazireh" has already posted the link.
You'll need the HTC drivers (download HTC Sync install it then delete HTC Sync leaving the drivers installed).
You should also get the ADB tools installed as at some stage they'll be useful.
As far as the RUU is concerned you need to make sure it's the right one for the current CID on the phone.

Thanks for the help guys, but heres the deal:
I cannot s-off due to it not being able to boot.
I could try Junopbears s-off but I cannot unlock, as it just freezes when I try.
I found the correct ruu but again it freezes and does not boot into the bootloader.
My CID is T-mob010
I have all drivers installed, adb, fastboot, etc
If your on hboot 1.18 you have a gingerbread fw, look for that

its completely possible that the motherboard is failing. I see this in my shop all the time, though usually with the MyTouch 4G (faulty eMMC chip) but the sensation and a few other HTC's also see this. we havent come up with a solution between my two stores employees, so hopefully someone here can?

Yeah that's what I'm leaning toward right now, there is nothing else I can do. I have 4 or 5 Mytouchs on the shelf with bad eMMc chips so I guess this one is joining them.

Yes the RUU was 1.50.531.xxxxxx
Yes, I can get into Fastboot usb, I can do fastboot commands, it just freezes when the RUU tries to do its thing.
Jbear would still work if the bootloader were locked, but I couldn't unlock the bootloader. Revolutionary will not work either because its run while the phone is on, which I can't do.
I think I've exhausted every option, it seems to all point to a failed eMMc chip, shame though, I really like these phones.
Thanks for the help fellas

I just had a child and really don't have the hours to spend researching like I should.

For what purpose do you want to upgrade your hboot? Also, please post your current details: hboot, locked/unlocked status, s-on/s-off status, basically the first five lines of your bootloader screen.

Everytime I try and update the rom, I get an error saying the hboot needs to be updated.
It's not just the hboot that needs to be updated, a full update of the firmware is required so you need to run an RUU. In order to do this safely you need to get s-off first. Is your phone an att model? Do you have SuperCID?
PS. I realise that you might not have a great deal of time on your hands, but it is your responsibility (and XDA rules) to search before posting.
PPS. I'm not helping you because you're offering a reward, and in my opinion nor should anyone else be.

+1 on this.
If you are S-off, just run the RUU and you are good to go. You'll have to reinstall custom recovery, since RUU writes stock recovery to the phone. But that's really it.
If you aren't S-off, the process is very easy. But it requires SuperCID, which if you don't already have SuperCID might be a bit more involved.
BTW, if you are SuperCID and S-on, do not run a Jellybean RUU, as it will brick the phone.
