Kingo Android Root is a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing application for Windows based computers that forgoes the device specific route, and offers rooting for a lot of Android devices from a variety of manufacturers. Supported phones include the likes of Google Nexus lineup, several HTC devices including HTC One, One X, One V, Droid Eris, Motorola Defy, a number of Samsung phones, popular LG devices and some smartphones from Sony. It offers a true one-click root experience, where you have to just download the application, install it, connect your device and click Root.
There are a few things that you need to be mindful of. When connecting your device, you need to have USB Debugging enabled in Android settings. There’s no requirement for pre-installed device drivers, as the software will take care of that for you. In fact, it will give you the Root option only after the drivers have been properly configured. Past that, all you have to do is hit the Root button, and let the application work its magic.
The app pushes SuperSU binaries which are slightly outdated, but get instantly updated to the new version thanks to Google Play. However, it won’t install a custom recovery, so that part you’ll have to take care of manually. Kingo Android Root supports Android versions up to 4.3.

So, can someone please explain the reason why this thread was closed, and then re-opened!? And what was all that talk about security issues, sending data to chinese servers, etc.!?
Rooting our device without a unlocked bootloader is pointless
The kernel implements write protection that prevents you from making any changes to the system partition
You're better off unlocking your bootloader and taking the slightly longer but right route to root your device.

I agree. Someone at XDA closed the thread, and they had a reason. And someone at XDA reopened it. Why?
What gives with this Kingo software? It's a slick site. It's free. It's simple. It roots different phones. And it does not appear to be sensitive to OTA updates. If the DLVR root required an exploit to work, and ATT issues an OTA update that closed the exploit but the Kingo root just breezes right by it all of it, what gives.
these work on one x + ?
just downloaded this software but googled it first before using and this has been said to have a lot of flags for this software.it is said to send imei number to chinese servers as well as other info and a few other things so until i know this is ok to use its a no go and would advice caution to anyone wanting to use this.
Hi guys, someone with Samsung Galaxy s 3 LTE has root with this software?I am from Spain.
Another thing, this will change the status of Knox?Thank´s!

No, its kinda the same reason we just don't randomly post our IMEIs here on xda or our serial numbers. Why do you think people cover their imeis when they do fastboot getvar all?.... They can spoof your IMEI and do illegal activity. Your imei is like your home address because yes they can clone the phone. Dude I'd rather just not take the risk of getting in trouble with the cops and not share your imei

The IMEI number is basically a unique serial number to the phone. It's like an ethernet MAC address. It's supposed to be unique. If someone got ahold of yours, the worst they could do is pretend to be your phone's serial number. They couldn't access your account, they couldn't use your data, or make phone calls as if they were you. All of the account information is on the SIM. There are a few reasons why someone might want to spoof an IMEI - despite the fact that it's illegal - such as to avoid using a phone with a stolen IMEI, or to pretend that one phone is another (such as making an iPhone look like it's a Nokia to avoid specific iPhone charges/plans).
having said this I have used this as a ton of other users... no cops been knocking at my door yet.. just saying...:cyclops:

Then perhaps we should all post our IMEIs online. Yes spoofing is illegal but I wouldn't think they would care when they are going to use the IMEI for illegal activity. Things are illegal for a reason. Because it can harm other people.

Hi all,
Come on you all, let's face it!
I think data possibly (as nothing is proven, only rumors) going to China is about as bad as leaving it on USA servers and NSA saving and mining it all for their own purposes of which we know nothing about either.
I happily used Kingo on quite some phones now, all to my satisfaction :victory:

It was proven and the makers of this app were contacted and have subsequently fixed the issues XDA moderation had with it, hence why this thread is open
Regardless, using this application is somewhat pointless on the international version of the HTC One because HTC supply a bootloader unlocking tool which enables us to flash a custom recovery, from there we can install SuperSU in flashable zip format, gaining root access. We do not need the exploits contained in KingoRoot to gain root access. KingoRoot is designed for devices where the manufacturer isn't as kind as HTC and so exploits are needed to gain root access.

Hi Everyone,
I just received a sms from official gov site stating that my IMEI will be locked next week.I received this item as a gift and it will be a piece of plastic by then.I am very desperate and pissed off about not being able to use my pda so what's the solution here?? I've been reading all these forums, but it seems like no one were able to change IMEI number for 02 XDA Exec.I know that my phone is unlocked now so I can use it in Turkey, please any help would be greatly appreciated, have a great day!!
ROM Version: 1.30.107 WWE
ROM date: 04/11/06
Radio Version: 1.09.00
Protocol Version: 42.42.P8
Thanks in advance!!!!!
You can't change the IMEI number, it's fixed with the hardware so that the item can be locked when it's stolen. I suggest you contact your retailer.
Well I received this item as a gift and I know that unit has been purchased from UK so I do not have any way of contacting any retailer in Turkey.I was wondering is there any company in UK to change that default factory settings for O2 XDA Exec. I know that there is so many different solutions for different models. I can easily send the unit back to UK for these changes but if there is any software out there to make my life easier?? may be very soon
You didn't read my post. The IMEI number is a hardware setting and cannot be over-written by software. Even if you send it back to the UK, other than swapping it for another unit, they can't modify the IMEI number. And swapping the unit won't solve your problem - I suspect you've been contacted because for whatever reason you're not allowed to use UK IMEI handsets in your country.
Hi there,
First of all, thank you so much for your quick response.I completely understand your point, it's a hardware setting and from my understanding, there is no solution for that. It seems like I need to sell my XDA Exec which I received as a gift, what a shame!!!! but anyways I really appreciate for your time to clear that out matter for me.Have a great day. Thanks again...

So, just to re-iterate, it was a gift yes?
Please DO SEARCH before you post anything! You will find whatever you like
Well I have been searching for a quite while brother and if you read the information above you can see that this is a hardware setting and DO search do not do any good, feel me bro ??

Relax man, if you DO search you will learn.
Write "imei AND change OR restore" in search field get surprised and read what you found.
thank you so much for the links, do not misunderstand but I am so frustrated about not being able to get solid info fro unlocking IMEI for O2 XDA Exec, some one is saying that this is a hardware setting so you can not change it,some one is saying that buy a dongle or someone is saying that there is a free tool out there which you can use it for free.I understand the party ın order for you to use this tool, ROM needs to be downgraded and need to unlock CID but no difference as far as I can see!! I might be doing something I guess but it should not be that difficult for us to handle these puppies, any suggestions, thanks in advance brother, have a gr8 day!!!!
Best Regards,
Bayareaplaya
Can't give you any advice with IMEI issue; my only advice is to read to learn if it's doable or not OR if you confused e-bay your device and buy a new registered one..
IMEI on the Universal is not a hardware setting, ie is not fixed by the hardware.
How you change it depends on who you know!

Hi, be very careful with this. There is no legal way to alter the IMEI number on a phone. It is the thing that identifies your phone across the networks. If you change it (there are ways but they are difficult, illegal and dangerous to your phone) then you would have to change it to one that was authorised but not in use anywhere else (the networks detect cloned IMEIs and bar them) plus it would have to show up as the same model handset (again cloned imeis are bared - if a nokia suddenly shows up as an XDA it would be obvious). Also, if you did change your IMEI and the owner of that one was up to no good you would be implicated. Remember that while you are using a phone it is possible to locate you precisely and also listen into your calls. The only reason that the IMEI would be blocked by a network is if it was reported lost / stolen by the owner. You should ensure that this gift was owned by the person that gave it to you and was not reported as lost / stolen by them (for example to get a replacement). If they just upgraded then the IMEI will not be blocked. Its also irregular that you are receving a warning text. If the IMEI is to be blocked then it will just stop working and be unable to register on a network. Finally, the blocking is done by the phone company, not the local government. It sounds like you received a hoax text. If in doubt then phone your local government to ask. I doubt they even have a department that handles mobile phones (unless it belongs to them of course). One last thing. If you did have an XDA that was IMEI blocked then its still a pretty good PDA - better than a "lump of plastic" any way, however, the telephone facility would not work.
Ant 8)
Ant is very much correct, although I'm sure that any reader of this forum knows full well that changing IMEIs can be very very illegal.
Have a read through this post for my views and "tales of blood-chilling terror!"

Hi Guys,
Well I am fully aware that changing IMEI is illegal but I don't understand why everybody seems like very knowledgeable on this web site but sharing an info is not sufficient for some reason. I mean I take the whole risk so why people are getting so paranoid about it. If I need to pay some penalty, that sounds like none of your business, right?? on the top of that this is not a lost or stolen phn and I am planning to put an IMEI number from a old phn which is not working properly!!!! anyways if there is someone out there, what needs to be done step by step. I'll be more than happy to listen.I am pretty sure there are so many people willing to do the same procedure in order to get back too their PDA's, Anyways, thanks in advance, have a great day

This topic is discussed a lot of times. I gave the links above, read them and find your own solution within the posts.
baya,
unfortunately, noone wants to be implecated if ever you or anybody who reads their step by step instruction get caught. Nobody also wanted to teach illegal procedures especially to a forum as open as this. The previous message is right. If you want to change the imei and if you really value your phone, you better read and learn. research the jargons and stuff to understand what they are saying.
From experience, people knowledgeable with WM5 and Hima will always point you to the right direction but will not teach you step by step. Please understand that these people receive tens or hundreds of messages through the forums. If they answer every single inquiry verbatimly, they will no longer do anything else. I guess you could imagine what I'm saying.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

There's some very intelligent people working in there. It amazes me.
Thanks for creating this thread. I keep an eye on the bootloader threads and get tired of having to suffer through pages and pages of people *****ing and moaning about everything related to the bootloader issue except the actual progress in development.
Sent from my LOCKED (Verizon, you suck), SCH-I535.
For anyone interested, I submitted a complaint to the FCC regarding the locked bootloader on the GS3. If you'd like to do the same, go to fcc.gov and click on file a complaint. Then choose wireless provider and then choose the option related to deceptive actions. There is a 1000 character limit to your complaint. Here is the text of my complaint.
Verizon is the only major carrier to have released the Samsung Galaxy SIII with a locked bootloader. There was nothing in Verizon's advertised specs about a locked bootloader. Their explanation is that the device is locked to maintain the security and integrity of the network. However, they are currently selling another Samsung phone, the Galaxy Nexus which has an unlockable bootloader. Also, Verizon has announced a "developer edition" of the Galaxy SIII with an unlockable bootloader for use on Verizon's network. That device must be purchased directly from Samsung for $599. How can Verizon claim a network security and integrity issue and then sell, offer and allow such devices on their network? I feel that Verizon has tricked many customers into paying for a device that they can't use to it's full potential. They know that "security" is a great loophole for complying with the letter of their Auction 73 Block C requirements while totally violating the spirit of that agreement.
That complaint is 990 characters. If you'd like to copy it for your own use, please feel free to do so. Hopefully, enough of us will do this to get the attention of the FCC, consumer organizations and those in positions of influence over the wireless industry.
Sent from my LOCKED (Verizon, you suck), SCH-I535.
I didn't get a chance to file a complaint with the FCC last night but will tonight.

Filed mine yesterday..
Got a call from VZW customer service today. They asked if I was content with my recent upgrade!
She agreed with me that often people buy Androids instead of iPhones because Androids are so customizeable. I expected to be able to use an OS of my choosing on this phone, so I am upset that Verizon locked the bootloader. She understood and sympathized, and now on a server somewhere in the world, there's a short note stating that I'm unhappy with my upgrade.

Now I may be wrong here because I've never flashed a rom but come to the S3 from an X2 so I've done my time with encrypted boot-loaders, but-
I thought we could change settings/features/etc. on each Rom, but, changing the base kernel of the OS is impossible. Thus, when a new OS is released from Google- say key lime pie, and it drastically changes the kernel, we will forever be prevented from putting that on our device.
Again, I may be wrong. My understanding of it is very limited.

It's "Barry" and I have no problem helping you guys.
"People choose Android phones for their openness. That openness allows portability so we can use the phones we've purchased from a single carrier on other carriers so that, based on the free market competition the FCC fosters, we have choices. Up until Verizon launched the new Samsung Galaxy SIII which is projected to sell in the tens of millions, Verizon (like all the other carriers) supported Android's openness and portability. With this new device, Verizon has locked the bootloader (the ability for users to modify the phone) limiting its portability. They did so without any communication with customers only finding out after entering in to a 2-year binding agreement with penalties. If other carriers follow Verizon’s dangerous precedent, and it’s reasonable to think they will, it runs contra to everything the FCC works so diligently to uphold. ”

Thanks for your post, Barry.
FCC is not ignorant to their own laws. That is, their jobs, after all. It is okay to include a bit of legalese in this case. Maybe mentioning Block C requirements §27.16(e).
I think you guys are barking up the wrong tree though with the encryption of the bootloader locking down the OS. That, they don't care about which has already been proved by Verizon's response to the Razr FCC complaint suggesting it was for "customer service requirements" and "Network security."
Section (e) of §27.16 also includes a blip about the locking down of the device to prevent said device from being used on a different network.
Verizon, will have to explain the reasonableness of keeping an encrypted lock on your device after you've decided to make the switch.
But, for it to work, you must first be truthfully denied by Verizon for this request. Only then, can you back them into a corner.
Truthfully, this will work for all 4g devices, from the Razr to the S3 with encrypted bootloaders.
I explain in more detail here, however, I got very few responses as it think it was over the heads of most.
Really, it's quite simple and again, VZW will have to explain how the action is reasonable, which I can't think of one way they can do. Not when I've decided to take this device to a different network. Basically, they'll tell the FCC it's "reasonable" to lock me to VZW's network which is expressly prohibited by that law. I just can't see how they can do it.
Edit- I'm all out of thanks to give so :good:

I believe you are mistaken.
I came from a Droid 2 Global, where we had a similar situation. We were stuck on the Gingerbread kernel, and with no kexec, we were unable to chain-load a new kernel. We eventually got ICS ports like CM9, but that's because developers made lots of wrappers to make the existing Android ICS framework compatible with the Gingerbread kernel.
This is different from the Galaxy S3, however. We have a working kexec port that allows us to chain-load any custom kernel we want. This means that the bootloader initially loads the original, signed Samsung kernel, and then while that kernel is running, it actually loads our new, unsigned kernel directly on top of the currently running kernel. The unsigned kernel is then the one handling everything. There is pretty much nothing from the kernel-upwards that we can't modify- it's only the lower level stuff, which is pretty much just the bootloader itself.
We now have an auto-kexec method that streamlines the entire process, too. Previously, the kexec/kernel package had to be flashed in recovery before starting Android, otherwise the new kernel would not be loaded. The auto-kexec method keeps everything on a cache partition, and automatically flashes the package with each reboot. Basically the only drawback to our auto-kexec method is that it takes a bit longer to reboot/start the device, because it must first automatically boot into recovery and flash the package.
Still, this method pretty much entirely circumvents the bootloader. Plus, if you've taken a look at the CM9 install guide for our device, the actual installations of ROMs with auto-exec are now as simple as flashing the custom recovery to the device and then flashing a ROM via recovery. It's near-identical to how you normally flash ROMs.
Because of all this hard work, AOSP ROMs with custom kernels are a reality, and I can only hope we'll see official support from the CyanogenMod team and other major ROM teams.

No but he looks like the type that would have 3 hot female geek interns that could explain it to him. FCC takes the time to figure out the whole situation I dunno how you can judge what someone looks like as to what power they may have... Hes got the finger that could potentially hit the red button. I mean common hes go a red tie! I'll try and file a complaint this weekend. I'm not really cool with the whole 14 day return deal. I want the phone that was advertised because I had to upgrade due the the fact i was forced to... keep in mind they didn't let us know via Verizon to customer communication only through thrid party...
Please sticky this if you want so people actually understand.
So, Go drink a beer and celebrate (but not by posting stupid stuff in the forum) Motorola has finally released their Bootloader unlock tool.
This is very similar to what HTC did a while back. Basically you get a code from your phone, submit it to moto, they void your warranty, they give you an unlock code, you unlock your bootloader.
Now, the bad news: Currently it only supports the new photon Q
Why you say, well I can actually answer that for you: In order to get the needed info from your phone you must run oem get_unlock_data in fastboot. This IS NOT supported on the bootloader of any previous phones, which means it will not work.
Now, Motorola has said they will be adding more devices soon, which seems to me to imply that they mean older devices, not just new ones as they come out.
HTC had the same issue. They fixed it by releasing an update to the phones that just flashed a new bootloader that allowed the oem stuff.
So bottom line is we are not yet supported and may never get an unlock, but hopefully moto will enable us to unlock our phones soon.
Just the fact that they have given us this tool in the first place is a huge leap.

Asked support...
I sent customer support a short message asking when and if the Atrix 2 would be supported with that tool. This is the reply:
Dear [REDACTED],
Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. We have reviewed your e-mail and we are ready to help.
Regarding your concern, Motorola's primary focus is the security of our end users and protection of their data, while also meeting carrier, partner and legal requirements. The Atrix 2 and a majority of Android consumer devices on the market today have a secured bootloader.
The technology is not loaded with the purpose of preventing a consumer device from functioning, but rather ensuring for the user that the device only runs on updated and tested versions of software. If a device attempts to boot with unapproved software, it will go into recovery mode, and can re-boot once approved software is re-installed. Checking for a valid software configuration is a common practice within the industry to protect the user against potential malicious software threats. Motorola has been a long time advocate of open platforms and provides a number of resources to developers to foster the ecosystem including tools and access to devices for developers via MOTODEV at
[REDACTED because links].
For the link that you have provided, it only supports the Motorola Photon Q and additional devices launching in the future. Each device that ships with an unlockable bootloader requires not only internal development work but also agreements and testing with carriers; thus, the option of having an unlockable bootloader will require consideration on a case-by-case basis for each device and each region.
We hope that you find this information useful and we look forward to assisting you in the future.

So my brother came to me today and knows i can root phones and whatnot. He thinks his girl is cheating on him. He says she has one of those apps that changes the notification icon of recieves messages from certain contacts and the messages dont show up in her normal inbox. At this point he just wants to catch them in the act. So, she has a samsung galaxy S1 and i know i can root it. He said he wants it so when she sends/recieves a text, it saves whatever is sent/recieved to a file OR saved in a database somewhere. and he wants a gps on her phone that lets him check where her phone is.
What apps/hacks can i use to do this without her knowing? He said hes even willing to pay for any apps if neccesary. But the apps cant be noticeable. Thank you guys Raidenbeats out!!

Look for any apps named like Shady SMS or whatever. It's like THE cheating app. If she has that, you don't even have to catch her.
Since she is going to know right away that her user data got all wiped when you rooted it why bother
^^^^^^^ this. Yeah really. If she's going to know since her data gets wiped. I'd recommend your brother having a good friend of his, one that she doesn't know, or at least doesn't know what he drives, have him drive your brother around and see where she goes. She won't know cuz she won't know that she's being followed. Or just have your brother's friend follow her...
And take this from someone with experience with this, women are VERY VERY good liars. Unlike us men, who are kinda good liars, but women, they are twice as sneaky as us men, TRUST ME! Anyway, if he catches her with another guy, and she lied about where she was at, and she says that they are JUST friends, she's lying! She's a freaking LIAR! And NOW is the time to KICK HER TO THE CURB! And then find the guy she's hanging with and twist his neck! Or at least curb stomp his little bitc# ass!!
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
Well he already knows she is cheating. He just wants to catch her. He also said he doesnt care if it wipes her user data, he will make her background the same as it was before and redownload all her apps. She already "accidentally" deleted all her contacts (because she had the other dudes number in there) so she wont notice that. + shes kind of a bimbo and would probably just chalk it up to her phone dropping. (She cracjed the screen and thinks that will mess up the software so it wouldnt be hard to convince her otherwise)
So no one has an app/hack to suggest?

Assuming you're in the US/Canada or any country in the EU this would be highly illegal and I'd advise not doing it.
Tell your brother to take her somewhere that is in public with a lot of people around, expose her for the POS that she really is, and leave her there.
Then he should throw a party to celebrate throwing out the trash.
Cheating is for selfish, pathetic, spineless and untrustworthy people.
If you don't want to be with someone, treat them like a person and be honest, just tell them.

Is the app hidden on their phone rhough?
Hi folks,
I'm a long-time lurker here and I have benefited massively from all the advice and threads for various phones throughout the years. I wanted to give back a little to the community: please be aware that the same way that U11 had massive issues on AT&T getting 4G/LTE support (not to mention VoLTE etc), the Essential is in the same boat. No 4G/LTE at all.
You will see some people do have it and might be confused as to why the inconsistency of results. The reason for that is typically that they brought their SIM over from their previous phone, which in their case AT&T did have listed and fully enabled features-wise in their database (the IMEI of the older phone).
To be clear, this is a crappy move by AT&T, not necessarily HTC/Essential (but similarly these companies should work with the carriers to get their devices working, OnePlus did it just fine with the 5), but as an end-user you are screwed either way. I would recommend cancelling the order if you can (I could not), and returning if you can (I also seem to be having trouble, no replies at all).
Good luck to you all. If anyone knows how to get AT&T to change the IMEI associated with your account for a dummy IMEI/one that confirmed does work, please let the rest of us know.
Best,
Fed

Yes, like I said, you will only face this issue if you give your Essential's IMEI to AT&T. I'm guessing you didn't do that, and just came from your old phone? I had no choice, because I needed a new SIM card.
I just got off the phone with AT&T too. They confirmed this phone model (and brand) is not even in their systems, which is why it drops down to the minimum spec. This is exactly what happened with the HTC U11, I can confirm that now. They said they would try to correctly provision the device, but since that is a slow process (up to 2 weeks), I will try to return it in all likelihood.

Yes, my previous phone was also unlocked. It actually has very little to do with the phone - it is about what IMEI AT&T has associated with your number (*not* your actual IMEI). From that, it decides what features to enable for you.

That's definitely good info for some, but the issue here is unfortunately not solved by anything in that thread. As your first step goes "The OnePlus One and 2 IMEI is supported by AT&T so give them a call and tell them to enter the IMEI." - the Essential IMEI is not supported, that's the root cause of the problem. It's silly because it could have been prevented by either company (by AT&T by not defaulting to 3G only for unknown devices, or by Essential by working with AT&T to get certified on their network like all other manufacturers do).
I never experienced any 4G/LTE/VoLTE issues with my unlocked U11 on AT&T at all, whether it was completely stock or unlocked bootloader and rooted. Everything worked from the start and still going great today.
I was previously using an unlocked HTC 10 (also on AT&T) and just swapped the SIM in to the U11. No contact necessary with AT&T. So I imagine it'll be the same when I receive the Essential, even though I'm pretty positive I'll be returning it for a refund, unfortunately.

Absolutely right !
According to our Forum rules no IMEI talks / links / workarounds or anything related is forbidden
16. Apps that collect identifying details
We don't routinely remove Apps that collect identifying numbers or other personal and device identifiers.
However, should an App, developed by you, be identified as one that maliciously performs this activity (e.g. by not disclosing it to the user), it will be removed from the site and possible sanctions applied;
If the destination of this information is known, it must be made known in the disclosure (examples of this would be you having coded your App to collect IMEI for authentication of the device using it)
If the destination of this information is unknown (as is the case for ad. engines, which collect it for marketing purposes), then please state which ad. provider you are using, in the disclaimer

Who says I'm changing the Imei of the phone. All I'm doing is having the person call the carrier to tell them to change the Imei. I'm not stealing anyone's imei , I give tools to check to see if the imei is available and not used by anyone .

Absolutely right !
According to our Forum rules no IMEI talks / links / workarounds or anything related is forbidden
That being said , a small cleaning has been performed
Also encouraging our XDA users to participate on other phones related forum will be ... discouraged
Thanks for understanding and especially @bestlands

Dan I understand but people need to know how to do this. If the carrier they have isn't willing to help them, it's not the manufacturers fault or the users fault. The only point of that thread was for no one to suffer because of the business decisions att decided to inflict on there users

STEP 1 - Generating an IMEI
In order for the One to be able to access the LTE network, AT&T needs to think that we're using an "official LTE" device (basically any smartphone in their lineup for the past two years). And to do that, we need to give them the IMEI of an official LTE device. WE WILL NOT BE STEALING PEOPLE'S IMEIs.We're going to create our own to give to AT&T. For this guide, we will trick AT&T into thinking that our OPO is actually an HTC One VX.

You`re guiding people how to " make a carrier THINK you have an official IMEI " ?
if this is OK in your opinion then what else can one do with an IMEI which "someone thinks it belongs to a certain carrier" ?
Do I miss something here ?

The users must personally contact their carriers and also check before purchasing a device whether their carrier works on it or not.
Providing such tools which creates fake IMEIs or make the carrier "think" are not welcomed here , I don`t know and don`t care about other forums , one of the reasons why we , as I said above , do not allow encouraging users to participate on other phones related forums. Other forums may have different policies , we have ours and must be followed .
IMEI talks are not allowed here , as simple as that
16. Apps that collect identifying details
We don't routinely remove Apps that collect identifying numbers or other personal and device identifiers.
However, should an App, developed by you, be identified as one that maliciously performs this activity (e.g. by not disclosing it to the user), it will be removed from the site and possible sanctions applied;

Just so we put it out of the way first, I didn't write that thread. I wrote this one; https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...lte-faster-and-fixes-all-your-problems.77304/
What do you mean what can someone do with an imei when someone thinks belongs to a certain carrier. I don't know how this stuff works overseas but we in the USA don't ask peoples for there imei when they switch phones, we only do it to start activating service with a carrier, or if the person came from a 3g to 4g lte smartphone we will ask them to activate it. For some reason, still to this day, ATT thinks that every imei not in its system, will fall back to 3g. So getting back to your question, If essential even did get the correct certification to use on att network, it will take months or almost a full year for them to start accepted essentials imei. Honestly you can't do much with an imei, you can blacklist the phone, but that phone will still work on overseas network, and the other possibity here is Sprint which still required the imei to be merged with the sim card can cause problems if the imei you created is going to be used by that network. Other than that the possibility of generated imei's isn't that big of a deal as it was even 5 years ago.

So can you explain to me why XDA does this? I see only one potential threat and thats blacklisted imeis but the carriers in the USA are so bad, that they allow bad imei;s to go through as well as telling you the phone works when it doesn't because of incompetent reps, plus they don't have the imei of that phone. If talked to people and have done this before so i know how hard it takes and also the frustration people have over this. Kinda boils down to why people use an iPhone, it just works from day 1, but thats a story for another day.

Yes, my previous phone was also unlocked. It actually has very little to do with the phone - it is about what IMEI AT&T has associated with your number (*not* your actual IMEI). From that, it decides what features to enable for you.

Do you know if ATT has the Essential Phone registered in their system yet? I need a new sim and I am heading to the store today. Thanks.

Hi 12paq,
I've sent the Essential Phone back... I don't know if they added the model/brand in general, but I know their claim to manually edit my IMEI to be 4G-capable still hasn't happened - because I don't have 4G on this SIM card now regardless of phone (since the network still thinks it's in the Essential).

Thanks for your time!
I already have the ph-1 up and running on an old sim card and I get 4g. The problem is the sim card is failing and I have a new unregistered sim in hand. Just wondering if I put a new card in and then activate it, will att still be a problem. In short is it the card or the phone?
So just to be clear since there is some confusion here about IMEI spoofing etc (this is illegal) - the problem with all this is purely, and I mean PURELY, what IMEI AT&T has in it's database for you. For reasons I cannot comprehend, AT&T does *NOT* just take your actual device IMEI (this is what you should not be changing). So in your case 12paq, if you activate a new SIM and this does not involve telling AT&T to update your IMEI in their database, and you have 4G now, you will have it in the Essential.
