Girlfriend cheating! - Android General

So my brother came to me today and knows i can root phones and whatnot. He thinks his girl is cheating on him. He says she has one of those apps that changes the notification icon of recieves messages from certain contacts and the messages dont show up in her normal inbox. At this point he just wants to catch them in the act. So, she has a samsung galaxy S1 and i know i can root it. He said he wants it so when she sends/recieves a text, it saves whatever is sent/recieved to a file OR saved in a database somewhere. and he wants a gps on her phone that lets him check where her phone is.
What apps/hacks can i use to do this without her knowing? He said hes even willing to pay for any apps if neccesary. But the apps cant be noticeable. Thank you guys Raidenbeats out!!

Look for any apps named like Shady SMS or whatever. It's like THE cheating app. If she has that, you don't even have to catch her.

Since she is going to know right away that her user data got all wiped when you rooted it why bother

^^^^^^^ this. Yeah really. If she's going to know since her data gets wiped. I'd recommend your brother having a good friend of his, one that she doesn't know, or at least doesn't know what he drives, have him drive your brother around and see where she goes. She won't know cuz she won't know that she's being followed. Or just have your brother's friend follow her...
And take this from someone with experience with this, women are VERY VERY good liars. Unlike us men, who are kinda good liars, but women, they are twice as sneaky as us men, TRUST ME! Anyway, if he catches her with another guy, and she lied about where she was at, and she says that they are JUST friends, she's lying! She's a freaking LIAR! And NOW is the time to KICK HER TO THE CURB! And then find the guy she's hanging with and twist his neck! Or at least curb stomp his little bitc# ass!!
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2

Well he already knows she is cheating. He just wants to catch her. He also said he doesnt care if it wipes her user data, he will make her background the same as it was before and redownload all her apps. She already "accidentally" deleted all her contacts (because she had the other dudes number in there) so she wont notice that. + shes kind of a bimbo and would probably just chalk it up to her phone dropping. (She cracjed the screen and thinks that will mess up the software so it wouldnt be hard to convince her otherwise)

So no one has an app/hack to suggest?

Assuming you're in the US/Canada or any country in the EU this would be highly illegal and I'd advise not doing it.

Tell your brother to take her somewhere that is in public with a lot of people around, expose her for the POS that she really is, and leave her there.
Then he should throw a party to celebrate throwing out the trash.
Cheating is for selfish, pathetic, spineless and untrustworthy people.
If you don't want to be with someone, treat them like a person and be honest, just tell them.

Maybe so but in some countries (US and Europe) there are still laws that apply to illegal interception of communications.

Well anyways, what are some apps or things i can do? Anyone know of anything good?

You are strongly recommended that you should not post these kind of threat here in xda. Because they are non legal and they intrude with the policy of xda's policy if non development. So beware before posting such threats.

XDA: The time is right

Dear XDA: I think the time has come for you to step out of the shadows. I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and started looking for a magazine in their sizable magazine section. I was frustrated when i went to look for a magazine about android -anything- and found zero mags. However, i did happen to find 12 magazines covering apple. Soo i searched online and to my dismay have only found one magazine that covers android and only apps. Please save all of us who love android and need something to read on the toilet. I promise you i will be the first to subscribe. There is a desert wasteland when it comes to android magazines and you could be our oasis. Seems like now could be the opportune time.
(sorry for the dramatics...just thought it would be fun to post my thoughts about this...)
A magazine on Android ? hmmm...
It's a good idea. There's inough content out there right now to fill a year's worth of monthly editions. I'd subscribe (as long as it wasn't priced unreasonably), and it could open way more people to Android rooting/flashing/modding...

Definitely a good idea. The democracy has always overthrowed the dictatorship. That's just the way the world goes.

Sounds cool. But sounds dangerous for xda also. Just thinking that people who aren't supposed to root or mod their phones might pick up a magazine andtry, then fail, maybe even brick their phones, and then they try sue xda. All i'm trying to say is I think it's best for people who don't have the mindset for modding or whatnot, to not be introduced to it or even tempted.

A Warning on any article helps, they cannot get sued just because someone brick their phone, it wont be XDA fault.
Yeah but some narrow-minded twit is bound to try and go after xda at some point anyways, if it hasn't happened already. And there's always an opportunistic lawyer to accomodate (apologies to any members who happen to be lawyers lol). That's why there are disclaimers at the top of almost every thread. At least magazine revenue would help pay the legal defense fees.
This site has gotten so big since Android got hot, there's a constant influx of people who just bought their first smartphone and already know they want it rooted with CM7 and A2SD, but have no idea how to make it happen. If properly implemented, the mag could be a roadmap to get them started, and teach them some forum etiquitte (search, read, search, read, find correct forum to ask in) before they end up neck deep in technical terms they've never heard before, and a device that no longer boots. Beats following some half-ass youtube video with a megaupload link and then having a first post on xda titled 'help i bricked my...'

A warning/disclaimer won't be a magical 'no lawsuit' pass for anyone. If enough people face issues and ends up bricking their devices, the magazine will get sued. Whether the lawsuit succeeds or not is up in the air, but I doubt it's 100% guaranteed to fail and, more likely than not, retailers selling the magazine will then ask themselves if they should continue stocking it or not.
And, of course, we're just talking about lawsuits from regular folks. Imagine if Google (or any number of other corporations involved in profiting from Android) gets a hold of the news that there's a magazine out there advising the general population on hacking the OS. Somehow, I think this is going to be another one of those times when 'Do No Evil' no longer applies.
If XDA decides to gets its own magazine, it should do what others have done: Give advice to look up how to do it, but do not offer any direct advice. If the people reading the magazine decides to continue doing it, then they only have whatever advice source they looked up to blame if something screws up. Of course, this still doesn't give the 'No Lawsuits' pass, but it'll probably be a much stronger case for the magazine.
All of this could just be my pessimism speaking, so no one has to feel that what I said will be unalterable reality. Still, it seems like an awful lot of risk for an attempt to get into a market that is supposedly not doing so well. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being online-exclusive. I doubt Engadget, with its 5+ million visitors, is complaining.
True true. The xda portal is pretty much like engadget itself. And engadget gets some of its news from xda also. Guess the problem is, the amount of people that are interested in hacking and modding, which is a relatively small amount. And well, as said before, we don't want to be inviting people who aren't supposed to be hacking or modding, else we get more threads saying how they bricked their phones. So maybe it's best to just stay as it is now.
^ Yes, you are right about that, but perhaps it's not as matter of exposure.
Look at the iPhone. Jailbreaking is much more widespread than Android rooting, but last I heard, it was still only about 2-4% of the entire iPhone userbase that was doing it. As others mentioned, there are several iPhone/Apple magazines too.
I think hacking has always been the domain of a small number of folks who probably knows the method to find out how to do such things by themselves anyway. The overwhelming majority probably doesn't want to hack and additional exposure by magazines to them might increase the hacking community by a small amount, but probably not any very significantly.
Rooting/jailbreaking/custom ROMS/etc will probably continue to be the domain of folks like those who frequent XDA and it's unlikely that it'll ever be as popular as, say, downloading MP3s until it becomes a super easy/risk-free task that has an undeniable benefit to the common man.
But frankly, I don't see a need to make it as common as downloading MP3s anyway. XDA is freely available to anyone who wants to know and, for those who don't want to know, let them continue using a stock Samsung Nexus S.
Yes... xda is the way forward! It is improving alot!!!!!!!!!

[THEFT] Stealing Applications from the android market

I sent a couple emails and asked exactly what he was doing.
He told me he is installing Titanium Backup on rooted phones and instructing people
to purchase an applications > backup the application using Titanium Backup > then refund the purchase.
I am aware that this does not work for all applications, but am appalled that this kind of thing not only seems OK for some, and they are profiting from stealing applications from the developers who are making them.
If there is something that can be done to stop people like this i would surely like to help
I also highly recommend that when building an application, a Developer check market license every time the app is started. This does make devices that are WiFi only hinder a bit, but crooks like this are ruining our android experience.
feel free to report him to the BSA
BSA reporting
They won't get asp updates, and you can only refund an asp once...
I'd not go so far as to suggest a licence check on every single launch, legitimate users will hate you and go elsewhere or get a cracked version...
Making legitimate irritating is why people currently pirate music so much... Same with game drm and no-cd patches... Steam addressed that for the pc though
But for this case, he's acting immorally and probably illegally...
Well that's a terrible ad . He stated:

This an unfortunate side effect of all the abilities our developers have given us. It's sad to see people taking advantage of the open market of android, and using it for personal gain, but he also has to leave a lot of info out of the process for his "customers" to have the wool draped over their eyes.
Hopefully people will be able to sniff this out as to-good-to-be-true, and not let this guy make money off of products he doesn't own.
People really need to learn ethics these days...

Someone should report him to his domain holder so he can be prosecuted. What he's doing is violating all wireless companies TOS and Google's TOS for the market and intellectual property.

I hate this guy. I just don't understand people who are just stealing apps and thinks that it will have no consequences. Today, every phone and app have internet access and developers are able to find out how many their apps were stolen and how many were purchased. So then, if everybody will be just stealing apps, they will stop development and we will have no apps and games and it will kill Android like it did to Windows mobile (there on the other hand was easier to download cracked apps then to buy it).
This dude is unbelivable, as are the customers who do business with hm. I really hope that this is microscopic part of consumers. It really wrong and dumb to steal something costing 1 or 10 euros or usd and takng a risk that it does not work at all. Do peopole actually count any value for their time and effort? Taking one hour or so to mess up your phone and steal what, 5 euros from devs who have written Better guides online with video tutorials, then many network operators ever boder... this is low.
Report him asap.

Calyxim is right, although he is participating in the crime kinda.
He may not be doing the illegal acts but he is aiding people who are willing to steal them. Which technically makes him an accomplice to theft, therefore making it illegal.

I also found that funny. Outside of the obvious legal and moral implications of stealing, I find it more than annoying that he is providing a service that should never be done for profit, but rather out of interest and love for hacking in whatever form one is able. Call me an elitist, but I think that I you are not able to root your phone and or don't have the drive to ask someone for help like about a million people on this forum, then you have no business rooting. Getting a rooted device without so much as a basic understanding for the process is the equivalent of script kiddying in my estimation.
Ugh!! I hate people who male up businesses in hacking!! Especially iPhone ones!! When I tell people I root androids, I dumb it down and say I hack them, and they always say, " so does that mean I can download free apps" ahhhhhhh

I don't get it. I'm pretty new to Android, but most of these apps cost less than a dollar. Really? You'd steal a dollar? Not that I'd steal anything.
I agree it is theft but at the exact same time my view is on this is the guy is wrong for charging for a service like this. Personally I think it is pointless to get worked up over theft of a mobile application like tons of people crack software for computers it happens. But has anyone ever considered Android's kernel? It is Linux which means it relates to the Free Software philosophy which gets me why charge for apps why make a profit I personally believe in coding for learning, fun, collaboration and the benefit for others. But if someone wants to make a profit then sure go ahead. But you know people are just going to pirate it so how much of a profit will you truly make off a app? But to go as far as charging someone for that kind of service is even lower.

I can see where your coming from but its a little different in the music world. At my shows there is the expensive seats up front, cheap seats in the back and free out in the field. I am not saying that I am after everyone's money just give me credit for my work. I have had people steal my sheet music and claim it as their own before. That doesn't mean I won't make money at all but I put a lot of work into that and to have someone else say they did it is what pissed me off. He could have had it if he just asked but that was weeks of my time lost and I have nothing to show for it. When it comes to apps I agree that there should be a free trial for all of them, but if its not and you can only get it by paying then if you want it bad enough you will buy it. If making apps was my only source of income and someone leaked it and everyone gets it for free without at least donating then I would starve. That's what gets me so riled up.
It's like every thread on here, ReActive butts in and it goes way off-topic (or he just insults someone for posting about a dream), but I can't stay away from this one as it speaks to the core of my principals.

...so how does that change if he asked? What do you have to show for it then that you lost by him not asking? Even if he doesn't ask, you can still say: Hey, I made that, and people are benefiting from it. Isn't that why you create art, so people can enjoy it? Does it really matter if they know who the artist is or not (if you are not trying to make money off it)?

Back to money again. Money is a false construct and has nothing to do with art, skill, or creativity. If your only source of income is payment from individuals for something you can copy and reproduce without costing you any money or time, then you are in the wrong business. If I can't hold it in my hand, it is not a commodity, it is simply knowledge/information/directions/instructions. All of those things should be free to the entire globe.
If I can see it, if I can hear it, if I can learn how to build it... then I have an undeniable human right to record it, copy it, modify it, and redistributed it to anyone and everyone. Not sharing your recipes/sheet-music with who ever is interested (for free) is a crime to my sense of morality/values. It is all just information, and the collection of all the worlds information should be freely available to every human on the planet.
"If I give you a pfennig, you will be one pfennig richer and I'll be one pfennif poorer. But if I give you an idea, you will have a new idea, but I shall still have it too" - Albert Einstein
You can't "build" it, pal.
Stealing my software (or anybody else's) is a crime.
Furthermore, it's not about the love and it's not about the people; it's about the money.
Anytime you publish any kind of IP, you know that there will be theft, but that doesn't mean I have to like it--or endorse it.
Furthermore, this site forbids piracy and if you go around proudly saying otherwise, you will proudly join Jin out there in the wild blue yonder.
If you can "build" all this great software, just make your own. No need to steal it if it's so trivial and easy for you.

I had a huge event to get ready for so getting back into the forums here to post has been challenging. Thank you Orange808. I was upset I couldn't get on to tell the other guy about how stealing from me hurt me, but you got to them first. I say that at the end of the day, no mater how you try to justify it, if you take something that's not yours without going through the proper channels you are a thief. I don't care what kind of Robin Hood complex you have, if you didn't compensate or do whatever else is asked of you to obtain the product, and even ideas can be products, you stole it. I am not ok with that at all. If you are ok with being a thief that's your problem, don't try to make me thank you for it. But with that all said we are way off topic. I started this thread to ask a question. It has been answered. I don't know how to close a thread on this forum, but it needs to be closed. If you want to argue about morality, START YOUR OWN THREAD! Please stop doing it on mine. Thank you.

I don't have the time/patience to look up and post all of the links , but go to wikipedia and look up Intellectual property and you will see that it is protected and treated as real property with all of the same rights. That means that taking someones music, app, program or any other IP without their permission is still theft. Don't believe me ask a lawyer. As I said before. The original topic this thread was started for has been answered and this thread is closed. Start your own thread if you really want to hash this one out.

I want to find this guy....

I was reading a CNN article on how Google play is quickly catching up to the Apple App store.
In the comments is this douche bag..
What??? Yes there are more Android phones then iPhones, but it is a well known fact that iOS accounts for more web traffic than Android. Why is this? Because most Android users dont have a job and eat hot pockets in the mothers basement. Android users in general do not have credit cards and thus tend to look for free stuff. This is why, despite being the majority, a developer cannot make any money. This will not end unelss Google starts modeling their store after the Apple App store. Plus, if you remove all the crap like wallpaper, sound bites and pirated apps, you are probably left with under 200,000 apps.

I think people who buy the iPhone know exactly why they buy it. Quality build, unmatched ecosystem and excellent customer service are a few. Why buy the cheap knock off when you can get the real deal.
Lets face the truth, Android users are not the brightest in the bunch. Apple is sells hardware/software, Google sells advertisement space, this is how each makes their money. Android users have chosen to give up their personal data in exchange in order to have choice. The choice they are making is which phone do I want to use in order to give up my personal data.

What difference does it make, Samsung phones look like iPhones. How else do you expect Samsung to comepete. Build a phone that looks like an iPhone and the Droidtards will then choose to buy it because they now have the best knockoff of an iPhone available. Its really that simple.

" At least with Android, I have a choice in what's important to me, whether that be hardware types or software"
yea, on the hardware side, you have a choice of [email protected] and heap o' junk. Nice choices. On the software side, you have a choice between amature crapware and second rate copies.
Do you know why developers develop for iPhone first and Android second, if at all? Its because developers look at the Android ecosystem and see nothing but a mess. You cant even install ICS, you think you have a choice? Are you kidding me? You do not have a choice. I have the choice with an iPhone because I can choose to run the best mobile software I want at anytime, you can't run top of the line software and your hardware was probably once touted as an iPhone killer.

It isn't written very well. Alot of sentences that don't make sense and alot of words that are spelled wrong. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this is either a kid or uneducated idiot. Either way, I don't think anyone will even remotely take them serious. Funny tsf though, it is amazing how close minded some people are.....

Recognize a troll for what he is. He's just looking for an argument...
Another iFool, he obviously is very misinformed. The iPhone 5 is a complete fail on apples part. Wife wanted to upgrade her iPhone 4 to the 5 and changed her mind after looking at my GS3. Apple users can sugar coat all they want, in the end, I'd take open source any day.

Recover Video of Police Thieft

a police officer snatched my HTC One XL out of my hands and deleted a video I had just taken of him being heavy handed. (that's thief and destruction in my eyes)
I would like to recover the video and a few hours later when I got home I tried to recover the video but had no luck.
No more photo's or videos were taken after the video was deleted.
I mounted phone in disk drive mode and ran [email protected] UNDELETE
it found the files he deleted and had the correct date and time.
I recovered them but have found them to be all "0" in the hex explorer of "UNDELETE"
It recovers a 25mb file but it won't play obviously as it has no data.
I have also used Recuva and it has the same issue. Both apps were run in a "deep" mode as they took about 25 minutes per recovery.
My question is:
Does the HTC One XL write all zero bits when you delete a file, surely not.
Is it possibly just a case that the phone is just not letting the recovery apps look at the data ? If so is there any way to recover ?
I have turned on USB debugging but that has the same results.
Cheers
Louis
Well that sucks... You didn't file a complaint about this public servant at his place of work?

I don't think its anything particular with the phone. Folks on here have gotten Recuva to work on the One X, from what I've read in the past. But the memory may have been over-written already by some other process. Since once that happens, I don't think Recuva can retrieve the file.
Recuva seems to give the best results to retrieve corrupted or deleted data, from what I've read on here. So I'm not sure if you'll get much better results using other methods, at least from a consumer level. And in my experience Recuva doesn't work a great many times. I think I've only been able to recover deleted/corrupted photos 1 out of the 3 or 4 occasions I've used Recuva.
And not to get too far off topic, or sound like a know-it-all. But there are some states (Illinois, Maryland, and Massachusetts that I know of) that have passed laws that make it illegal to video tape police while they are performing their duties. Its total BS, since video taping things in public is generally perfectly legal. And the police wouldn't need to make it illegal, unless they were trying to hide something. I could understand if the SWAT team was trying to conceal their special tactics, or something like that. But for a regular officer performing everyday tasks, such laws are not justifiable IMO.
In any case, you might research if there are any such laws in your area (if you haven't already) prohibiting taking video of police. The officer probably did step over the line by deleting the photos on his own, even if there is such a law (its not his job to play judge, jury and executor). But even if you are able to recover the video, depending on the local laws, you might not want to do anything with it anyway. One guy from Maryland was facing 16 years in jail, for posting a video on Youtube of a police officer brutalizing him. I think this and similar cases have become ongoing legal battles, and escalated to higher federal courts. And the laws may well be found to be in the wrong in the end. But probably not something you want to mess with, unless you really intend to be be in it for the long haul (if such laws exist in your area).
stop trying to make cops look like the bad guy, if he was there, he was doing his job. If some stupid kids were giving him a hard time, I wish he confiscates your phone for evidence next time.
Get a life. There job is hard enough.

Maybe, maybe not. If the officer was in fact in the right, the video probably would prove so. While witnesses may distort the truth, or recall things improperly, a video will not. That's why the police have become so afraid of video devices now that they are so ubiquitous. God forbid video evidence be taken to prove whether they were doing their job properly or not.
And its not the officers job or right to make the judgement of whether a video should be deleted or not. By doing so, he is almost admitting guilt. Why hide something, if you have nothing to hide?
I respect the police as much as anybody, probably more than most. But any human being is capable of abusing their position, and at a minimum the general public should have the means to record such abuses if they happen in public.
What about Apple's new patents on location based triggers that can disable hardware like cameras or internet... you know in "sensitive areas" .. like concerts or movie theaters..
or cop cars... hmm :sly:

Guys, let's stay on topic. This kind of discussion belongs in the Off-Topic thread if it belongs on XDA at all. Seems like the OP's question has been answered, so let it go.
I thought some of the data may have been corrupt or written over but not written over the whole set of 3 videos with "zeros" (as shown by hex editor)
I recorded:
348mb
23.5mb
7.81mb
as I made no more recording I would have thought I could get something, at least not all "zeros".
I was hoping that someone may be able to point out why I am getting all "zeros"
ps, this happened yesterday in Adelaide, South Australia. http://au.news.yahoo.com/video/nati...81d2-3bcf74e62d03/claims-of-police-brutality/
and is against the law for an officer to delete your footage here.
Regards
Louis

90 % of pigs are scum. Who knows you may be one of the good ones. If thats the case, your one in a million buddy. I wish I had something to offer the OP cuz I'd love to see him be able to recover the video
Just a thought, rather than mounting in disk mode maybe you could try this procedure instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705
Cheers for the link, Judging that you need to root your phone I may have to root my phone. That may be the issue.

Any process that uses the internal SD could have snagged (over-wrote) that part of the memory.
But I agree that something else may be making Recuva fail. I've had Recuva fail more times than it works, and it can't be a case of the blocks being over-written every time.
I know on my phone there is a hidden trash folder that everything goes too that's deleted try looking there

Could be because you're on linux, I never had the .trash-1000 folder until I started on Ubuntu.
