Upgrade to 8.1 RT is ready for Surface! Do it or not? - Microsoft Surface

Hey,
The upgrade for my Surface is ready, and I am thinking what to do with that. Right now I have unlocked (jailbraked) system, I know that after installing upgrade I will have to stick for a while with locked one. How about you guys? Are you installing asap or waiting for unlock solutions?

From a fellow surface RT owner that has just moved back after installing the 8.1 update preview, I wouldn't recommend it for one reason - standby battery life.
I kept installing the updates assuming that the battery life would improve.
Suffice to say that my standby battery life has jumped from about 12 hours to about 12 days.
In fact my battery life on 8.1 was so poor (even with Bluetooth on) that my surface could actually last longer if I was working on it all day.
Unless Microsoft bothers to fix this enormous issue, I'm staying well away from the update.
On a connected note - if anyone downloads the update, please let me know if this issue gets fixed, I assume it isn't already.

Yeah, i read about battery issue. But I wonder if the final version differs from the preview in this issue? Can anyone confirm or deny? And what about the RTM version? Is the final 100% is the same as the RTM?

I doubt the official Windows RT 8.1 RTM release for the Surface RT is the same as the community-built RTM version for ir. Remember, it had to have some drivers injected? And this release suffers from Touch Cover issues after the Oct 15 firmware update, and you need to do a refresh to solve it. I think that you would still need to do a refresh every time you do a reinstall.
I am pretty confident that the real release wouldn't cause any such problems, that's why I am looking forward to someone doing the upgrade and uploading it's image for us, the early RTM users, to restore our devices to official-spec.
By the way, I have really noticed the poor standby time. My guess would be that some Windows 8.0 background features were purposely limited to compliment the missing support for the 5th battery-saving core, and that Windows 8.1 brought many of them back without fixing the issue with this 5th core. And I doubt that Microsoft is ever going to fix it even though it's obvious now that the 5th battery-saving core is really needed to achieve reasonable stand-by times. Or they might just limit this background stuff again (make tile updates much-less-often, for example).

OP, do you install apps to the sd card? If you do, then wait, unless the released ISO is really that different from the community release version, the functionality of installing to the sd card is broken.

DO IT. IE 11's performance is notably improved. The Surface RT couldn't break 1000ms on SunSpider when it first came out
Edit: It got 889.6ms, btw. Sorry if it's too small to read.

I have no plans to upgrade/update. For me having an unlocked desktop is worth far more than any changes I've seen so far in RT 8.1. I don't need Outlook thankfully. I do hope a way to changing the signing restrictions in 8.1 will be found and wish those working on it the best of luck!

I didn't do anything with the 'jailbreak' so I upgraded. IE is noticeably faster. Also keyboard auto correct/suggest is a million times better. Hard to tell if the rest of the system is any faster or if its just in my head now and too early to comment on battery life. I wish it had swype. No problems with my touch keyboard.

Thanks for replays. I think I will stick with 8.0 for a while until there will be possibility to unlock 8.1 for not signed apps.

I still running RT (not 8.1) and got 9xxms both on Desktop and Metro IE.
Try to upgrade to 8.1 but it disappear from store today. I see it yesterday and can't get it back. Really annoy.

Can anyone who has updated to 8.1 confirm or deny that the standby battery issue has been fixed, does the surface last overnight? This is a real issue that I want to know is fixed, as well as the god awful bugs that plagued the beta version of IE11
Edit: Not that it matters now, Microsoft have pulled the update due to an error with the boot configuration files. Looks like we might be waiting a bit longer for that upgrade (Unless one of you lucky upgrades feel like sharing your recovery drive files...)

As I feared, guess I'll be sticking with good old 8.0 for the foreseeable future, it's very disappointing to see MSFT pushing an update that cripples their own hardware and claim blind ignorance to it. There's no feature in 8.1 that's worth giving up a week standby battery. TBH there's no device nowadays that can excuse a device that only lasts about 12 hours on standby.

If it's of any use for you guys, I'm on 8.1 now and on standby at night (wifi connected, bluetooth disconnected, logged in) it drops from 98% to 92%. If I turn Plane mode on and log off, it stays at 99% or maybe drops 1%.
The first night when I got it 2 weeks ago with Windows 8.0 it stayd at the same % over night (logeed in, wifi on), but the next nights it would drop from 70% to 0%
I think it was solved disabling lockscreen notifications to avoid background usage. I planned to do a refresh with 8.1, but since it's working fine for me, I don't need to.

I think I did try that before but not since last updates. I'll give that a go and see how it drains over the next few days

Almost the same here, In my case it has been in standby for about 18 hrs, everything on, but disconnected... and it did from 100% to 95%.

Nokia Lumia 800

I've had my nokia lumia 800 for a couple of days now and have noticed the battery life is terrible. Its been unplugged after a full charger and 4 hours later it is at 52%.
Surely this can't be right? i have hardly used the phone.
Sent a few texts this morning and browsed the marketplace for 10 minutes. My wifi is off and brightness is set to low.
A lot of Lumia 800 users have reported battery problems. The 7740 update for Lumia is claimed to have battery life improvements. Hope that solves your problem.
OS version : 7.10.7740.16
Is this the latest that fixes it? becuase i am currently on this and still have the battery problem

There's one more update coming later this month. However, take the phone back and get a replacement. Some of them seem to have bad batteries.
This is a common issue with the Nokia 800, but Nokia said that an upcoming update will resolve this issue.
Ok i will wait and see if the next update fixes it.
I can't take it back due to buying the phone off of ebay
Try keeping the wifi on and have a default network to connect to. Using wifi for data uses less battery than using your network (thats what I think). Also wifi switches off when your phone is locked and starts when you unlock your lock screen. So no battery usage by wifi during locked state.
You can also try reducing the number of background apps running. I prefer only 2 or 3 background apps, but the choice is yours. The options are in the settings.
Also new batteries are sluggish in the beginning of their life (I read it in another forum). My battery started behaving well after a week.

That's true. I overlooked that fact while posting a reply.
@Piam: The battery needs a couple of cycles to get to its full potential. Wait for a week to see if there is any change.

Well this should probably have been asked in the Nokia Lumia 800 forum... Oh wait it HAS been!

Battery Life since latest Update

Has anybody noticed a deterioration in battery life on the Surface RT since the last update last week. My battery seems to be depleting quicker since update and I am wondering if it has to do with some of the tweaks they did to the WiFi, in order to improve connectivity.

This thread isn't about WiFi, it's about battery life.
Right, I had read this thread when the updates came out and thought nothing of it, however this morning I woke up to 9% battery life.
I usually charge my RT every other day and would normally be on 25/30% at the start of the second day, however today I'm on 9%, thats a pretty big drop..
I've not noticed any other issues but battery life certainly seems to have taken a hit for some reason...

I think I figured it out on mine. I away keep Bluetooth off because I don't need it , and it improves battery life. The latest firmware update re-enabled it by default. I turned it back off so it should help.
Wonder what other settings it reset, as I have done alot of tweaks along the way and don't have a record of them.

I've noticed this as well, except I'm using a Surface Pro.
Normally when I hover over the battery bar at 100% charge, I would get around 5 hours, but now I'm reading a max of 4, usually even less!

My performance has taken a hit big time since these last two updates. It's not as snappy as it once was. I'm really ready to sell it and wait for the Surface2 to come out. I love everything about my Surface except the performance. Hopefully Windows RT 8.1 will make a difference, but I'm not sure. I think its really the processor where things are getting bottlenecked. I have an i3, i5, i7 Windows 8 machines and they all perform fine. Those aren't mobile processors, but either Windows RT is not ready for ARM, or the problem is ARM.

Goodnessssssssss Yes...! I hate that. I've never had that issue before. Which leads me to believe it could be RT, however, I believe this specific ARM processor isn't powerful enough for RT. My browsing use to be snappy, app launches were snappy, and I only had to click the power button once for it to come on. Now I have that same issue where it takes a few presses for the Surface to come on.

Me too. It's extremely frustrating. The Surface is supposed to be a premium device, but it doesn't feel so premium anymore. I've been shopping other RT devices, but I feel Surface is the best. I also want to keep my loyalty and specifically buy devices made by Microsoft.
Since the last update my battery stamina has slightly increased, I charge my surface every day normally, prior to this latest update I would have 40-50% battery at the end of the day after 5-6h use, but since the update I am ending the day with 50-60% battery.
This week I left my surface off charge from Friday to Monday (UTC+10 so yesterday my time) and I had 20% battery left with close to 8 hours usage over the period.
On the topic of performance like the last few posts mentioned, I have found that the every patch Tuesday update since feb has been improving performance a fair bit. I used to have the issue with sleeping and needing to press the button a few times and then it would go back to sleep while entering my pin randomly, since the April patch Tuesday update this has been happening much less frequently (1 in 20 wakes compared to the 1 in 5 it was before)
I've not had any battery issues, and in fact like the post above this one if anything, it's better. I keep forgetting to plug the RT into the mains and after a full day's use (this is currently my only PC at work) I still have 30+% battery.

8.1 Update definitely has hurt battery performance

A lot of people have brought this up and I too felt like I was experiencing it. I can without a doubt say the battery is draining faster on 8.1. Before everyone starts with "check your apps, bla, bla bla", let me explain.
I recently RMA'd my Pixel 2 for a different problem. Prior to the RMA, I noticed that my battery seemed to take a hit after the update. However, I had already installed various apps and my feelings were purely speculative. As part of the RMA, I had performed a factory reset as instructed and over the course of 4 days my battery performance was still at the worsened 8.1 levels. I should also state that over the 4 days spent waiting for my replacement phone, I installed no apps and only updated the official Google ones that came pre-installed on the phone.
I received my new phone and this one shipped with 8.0. Again, I've installed no additional apps and I have paid attention to the battery over the last two days. As the day goes on, it gets difficult to determine if it is draining any faster. Luckily, my morning routine is damn near robotic. I eat a bowl of cereal and read the same news sites while using my phone. I take a shower and drive in to work. With my original phone on 8.0, I would arrive at work with my battery showing 99-100%. With the 8.1 update, my battery had dropped at this point in the morning all the way down to 94-96% (this drop was consistently reproduced for ~2 weeks). With my RMA replacement I am still on 8.0 and following my usual morning routine my phone is still at 100%.
I know that this test is not the most scientific but I think it is controlled enough to be able to say that something is different between 8.0 and 8.1. I know that others have voiced their concern that the battery performance has suffered. Has anyone rolled back to 8.0 and saw the battery go back to normal? I have a theory about the 8.1 update, but at this point I would rather not share it as it may guide the discussion down the wrong path.
I don't know how much truth there is to this, but some were speculating that 8.0 actually did not report battery percentage correctly, whereas 8.1 fixed this to report correct usage. FWIW, I'm getting to the end of the day pretty consistently with around 50% battery left and 4 hrs SOT, and I think that's a much better measure than how long it takes to drop from 100.
I've heard that too about battery reporting.

I don't think it's speculating. There was definitely something wrong with the battery calibration on 8.0. I'd have two hours of screen on time after taking it off the charger and it would still say 100%. At first I thought it was stuck and not working at all but eventually it would start to drop. As we all know, there's no way you can have that much SOT and still be at 100%. There's no doubt the battery level indicator drops faster when you first unplug the phone after updating to 8.1 but the bottom line is (at least for me) I still end up at the end of the day with pretty much the same battery left as I did when I had 8.0. That's all that really matters to me pretty much tells the story.
The prior 8.0 battery I believe had a bug where it did not report correctly. I remember before I'd use my phone for a long period before it even moved off 100%;
I did the 8.1 update and my battery is much better than it was on my previous phone. I may have had a bad device.
I think that is a bad way to judge battery. It is more accurate with 8.1 as with 8.0 i would get like 30 minutes of screen time some times and still be at 100-99%. if you do that math on that this would probably last me the whole week. But I used to get ~ 5hours of screen time and now i will be lucky to get 4 hours. My routine and work schedule is the same since the update. 8.1 I for sure lost about 1 hour of screen time.
I just got my Pixel 2 and have had it for 3 days now. I did my first test today against my original Pixel. My original was charged up to about 95% and my Pixel 2 was also charged up to 95%. I left my original sitting at home while I took my Pixel 2 to work with me. If I had had my original with me, my phone would be charging right now because it would be below 15%. Pixel 2 is sitting pretty at 67% As for the original that has been sitting on my night stand doing nothing, it's at 56%.
So if there's a battery issue with 8.1, either i'm not experiencing it or I should be at a higher percentage, lol. BTW, both phones all have the same apps and same configurations. Running for about 13hrs each. And as others have said, I remember also seeing that 8.0 was giving incorrect battery readings on the Pixel 2, which 8.1 fixed.

Well... I really enjoy the protect battery feature because i can charge my phone overnight without worrying about damaging the battery. Also , i experienced a bit better battery life .. even if im starting my day with 85%. The extra 4gb vram makes a difference for me as the phone feels snappier. For the rest , no issues at all!
A bit too early for me to review it but it seems just prettier in respect to design, i have 6gb ram and noticed a little more ram usage ( around 500 mb more ) and in the following days i will be able to notice battery usage thanks to "Ampere" app too. A shame that "protect battery" feature can only set limit to 85 instead of giving users choice
So these are some little things i noticed so far.
- battery lowest drain dropped to 50mA from ~70mA, still not perfect but an improvement.
-ui colors are not set automatically and there is no option to do it but to change it manually, this is an android12 related feature and hope it will improve in the future.
-clock widget changes theme without considering your theme setting, bad for aesthetics.
-Not a good text color management on homescreen, using light or dark wallpapers can still lead to notification bar text being unreadable.
-when you open an app and its logo appears for fractions of second background is white even when in dark mode.

Long overdue. But that's the one thing I really miss without root (battery limiter).
I wish they gave us more options than just 85%. Running a few tests, this can use roughly 35-40% of one cycle if left plugged in all day. That's compared to pre-protect feature where leaving the phone plugged in 3-4 hours (and therefore charging 100% for a few hours) would hit about 90% of one cycle.
However, if you could limit the charge to 55-60% (because I'm usually not away from a charging source for more than a few hours), then the charge cycle would be even further limited to only 10-15% per day. In other words, maybe more than 2X extended battery life as the current 85% option will yield.

No I haven't tried to sideload an update. It's my wife's phone so I don't want to mess with it cuz if I brick it I'd be sleeping alone. But I shouldn't have to sideload anyway, it should be receiving updates and it's not and Samsung has been less than helpful.
The other reason is that I no longer have a pc, only a chromebook, and running adb from a chromebook is a pain.

Question Battery life terrible after latest patch?

Anyone experiencing poor battery life after this latest patch?
My mobile network battery is very high and I'm on wifi.
Ideas?
The latest patch as in the one that released today? If so, high usage is normal for a few days. If it's the update from last month, you might consider a factory reset and setting all your apps up from scratch. Time consuming for sure but gives you a clean slate with the battery.

Yep, this is what I see too, I posted the pics in another forum and got a number of "that's odd" comments, where my overnight drain due to the mobile radio was crazy-high (this happened back in the Nov timeframe, fixed with the Jan update, and started again with March, pretty consistent, for me).
I typically charge in the AM, wirelessly, while I catch up on emails and such, so the phone had light use all day, and the bulk of the discharge was from 12A until around 9A, when it was not in-use.
We're located in a suburban area with very strong LTE and decent 5G towers all nearby, with (almost) always very low (e.g. "good") dBM signal values, for the mobile radio.
I flashed the April update as soon as it was released. I have also noticed that my battery life has been a bit worse on the April update.
Furthermore, I also root my phone. However, I always do a full wipe and fresh install with each update. So, I can confirm that there does indeed seem to be a potential battery drain issue on the April build. And as you have stated, I believe that it has something to do with the mobile data scanning. However, when I stay connected to WiFi, my battery doesn't drain as quickly as it does when I turn WiFi off.
Regardless, the May update has released today and so I'll likely be updating to that tonight to see whether or not this faster battery drain issue continues.
*Edit* - The May update - although only running on my device for around 12 hours - does seem to have improved that battery drain issue that was visible on the April factory image. However, this mobile data battery issue could very well be a result of Google pushing out all of these carrier service updates. Of which, they are presumably doing so in order to test the stock OS setup for their two new devices that will be launching within the next month: the Pixel 7A and the Pixel Phold. Therefore, if carrier service testing was the culprit of this issue, then I wouldn't be surprised if we see this issue pop up again due to further mobile data stability/reliability testing.
*Edit 2* - May update was installed for a few days. My battery life is MUCH better. It is essentially how it was prior to the April update.

Did you find any fixes? i updated to the May build and the issue is even WORSE. Phone idle for last two hours after full charge, down 12% already from mobile wifi data. Its literally sitting screen off burning 6% per hour
four hours of on time after full charge. 15% battery discharge - done by mobile network....ive been on wifi the whole time.
what gives?

On the AndroidCentral forums a user referenced an actual Google support thread (which had been locked, interestingly), where they had supposedly been told, by support, to revert to 3G.
That's sort of tough to believe though, if you ask me, given the fact most carriers in Google's largest Pixel market sun-setted 3G some time ago (my carrier, TMo, did it last summer, not that I cared much, but I was tracking things).
I'd say they might have confused 3G/4G-LTE, except that they specifically called out moving from 5G/4G-LTE -> 3G, weird, eh?

I would bet this is because the algorithmic calculation is done based on carrier-type use, which would involve pretty much any interrupts regarding phone/sms/rcs.
My guess anyway, I tried this too, one night, and saw a similar deal.
Whatever the cause may be, it's software related and it's very aggravating. Phone was fine a few days ago
I had the same problem with the April update. due to a change of contract i now only have lte, no more 5g. Since then the battery has held up like it used to.
I have to wonder what some people are doing to make their phones...or batteries...so awful?
I have the latest May, 2023 update installed. I happened to sideload the OTA instead of waiting but I do not think that makes any difference in the end. However, the very first thing I noticed was that everything seemed a little smoother??? (placebo effect??)
The very next thing I noticed was battery life...mine improved exponentially and it wasn't bad before the update!
For example I removed the phone off of the Google wireless charger around 5 AM, then I used it on Android Auto for a round trip of about 33 miles, and when I got home (four hours off the charger) I was STILL AT 100% Hand-of-God!
When I went to bed around 9:30 PM (yes, I'm getting old) the phone was at 90%...honest to GOD again!
Looked at the battery again around 6 AM and it was at 85%. The phone was on all night with DND activated, but everything else active.
I can only guess that one of two things are happening here...either some of you have installed crap-apps that have hosed your phones, or.....you have defective phones/batteries.
YMMV
I haven't noticed much of a change with the battery after applying the March update, purposely left the phone off the changer overnight with battery at 100% (12am) - looked at the phone at 6am and percentage was down to 97%.

did you read the post or just decide it was user error b/c your battery life is fine right now?
There were multiple pictures posted of the mobile network battery drain which has been documented elsewhere and confirmed by another user in the thread.
Battery life was great until the April update then the mobile network drain started which hasn't been corrected by multiple updates and full wipes.
