I thought the Max pixel resolution was determined from a hardware sensor fitted in the optical chain?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

No, android has max set in op system itself, prob just in case some chips can't handle 100%. And when u change %,s and u get almost 40% bigger files when pic is taken that's sweet.

Like I said on op lol,its a hack, settings change. To make a flashable zip it would have to be madenfor every single ROM independently. Whew. Gtalk me for instructions. [email protected] is my handle,I'll answer as soon as I can. Do not email please. Now I LOVE the ROM I'm on and gtalk seems to be borking so give me a bit till dev tells me why.thanx

Wow overwhelming response on my gall lmao. OK I'm going to have to make a thread even a couple of them probably one in the main Android that session because so many devices can do this hack/tweak/OC. I need to make some threads and I obviously suck at it, I get it in XDA premium apk and no pics stuck. On browser now. is there anyone willing to help make me a killer thread with complete instructions pictures and everything we will do it together with both our names or even more people the more help the merrier. Thanx

I see no difference whatsoever, except the different white balance. Well, in fact I like the original one better
Logically, as the sensor size is FIXED, as has already been said :good:

The XDA Premium only allows 1 attachment to upload. I've seen this myself.
Pics look good, especially on darker pictures. Although I'm not sure how true to life they are without being there, but seems there is more visual offerings with it lightened.
Does the camera still take "instant" photos with the higher settings?

Want to post how to do this in OP? Should be helpful...

My guess is its a change in compression of the jpeg file.
When the CCD gets lit up with raw data it then converts to jpeg with a specific compression ratio.
That compression ratio will always be a lower quality than the raw data... Because its compressed. Your not taking RAW pics your taking JPG pics (or tiff, or PNG, or whatever).
All of those formats are compressed and by changing the compression ratio you can dramatically change the way the pic looks. Also results in a larger size because the pic has been compressed less to allow for more detail.
Thats just my guess anyways...
I think the edits can be added to build prop but not sure how effective they are. I tried them on a few different ROMS and no one ever spoke to the good or bad of it. No one even noticed.
But if he is talking something different than I am humbled...

You talk too much about your mod but less sharing.. LOL. What's the use of this thread?

Such a nice comment, first its not a mod,its a hack and I said I will post directions soon.want to explain it so MEMBERS won't mess up. Didn't talk to much posted about it and results, its in 7+ ROMs and its helped many. Sorry you can't wait a little bit for directions,I even said if ya can't wait to gtalk me but you just had to almost troll. Come on,be nice. Directions soon. Getting help from pro's on proper way to explain it so cuz I care about people and only want to help.

Its actually in androids file to control the camera and more. Media profile.XML
Very simple, but confusing to some so getting a couple of pro's to help me write directions. Also to other comments....pics sent here are compressed so once hack is used and your pic size is 3+ megs instead of 2 you will enjoy.

[REQUEST] Take Desire Camera to Cyanogen?

As it says really.
I tried the Desire ROM for a brief period today and I've got to say the Camera/Video app is gorgeous.
Love the wide screen and face recognition.
I'm presuming this ISN'T a HTC app so it can be ported across?
Anyone willing to try?

wow lol. you think megapixel has anything to do with anything lol! 80% of the time you noobits make me laugh. the camera.apk is supported with multiple framework images and htc's custom files. Theoretically it is possible to build their code and images onto our framework and merge some necessary files but it will take tons of time and knowledge. So I'm basically saying it wont happen anytime soon and when it does you should donate to the genius who did it!

I wouldn't care anyway. the camera is never going to be brilliant and I bet it would be difficult to tell the difference.
Shame it would be so complicated though.

My bad bro I truly am sorry. I just have alot of pent up rage from modaco. That guy ticks me off. Just try not to answer questions with false info yanno what i mean. but on-topic i have just tried porting framework.jar, easopen, pimlib, and htc.resources with proper permissions and correct .apks and it does not seem to get past the 1st boot screen. will post back later with newer results. btw I really just want my HTCMusic.apk!!!!
You can definitely see the difference. The biggest one is usability. Then for lower light shots, you can use a manual ISO settings instead of the automatic one, I tried it with ISO200 and there was almost 0 noise compared to the automatic ISO. Then you have click to focus and automatic face detection + more.
HTC Camera on Cyanogen will be awesome.

[MOD] 480x320 Recording for CM6 ROMs

This is a cross post from my mau5 ROM thread, but I think other people might enjoy it too.
I've put together an update.zip that allows for 480x320 recording via camcorder. Currently, our device only allows 352x288(high quality), this simple hack just allows a greater resolution and I think a clearer picture IMO.
I've set 352x288 as the default "low" quality and 480x320 as the default "high" res recording so that you do have a choice whenever you want. I've also changed the file format to mp4 instead of 3gp since well.. no one uses 3gp for anything.
There are few drawbacks though. 480x320 is the last somewhat "stable" res where the OMX core won't **** bricks all over the place so be weary of any force closes. Also, gralloc likes to crap out when switching resolutions on the fly along with being unable to view the 480x320 video in the gallery app (since we have such bad gfx power).
I do plan on making this STABLE at one point, but it'll require kanging some memory for gralloc to use while changing resolution.
You can check for yourself on the differences with a 352x288 recording and a 480x320 recording
(low light vs direct light)
You can see an example of a video I shot last night at a xmas party HERE to see 480x320 when it comes to more 'motion' recording. (Warning: White people dancing)

Not sure. Nandroid and find out
Why is the video quality in the CM/AOSP ROMS so bad? I know you said the 480x320 is better, but looking at both of your vides, while hte content was not fun (white people dancing never is) the quality is just unwatchable.
Just curious because on the HTC ROMs it is at least somewhat decent.
Not crapping on what you're doing here Dec, but just trying to understand what you're dealing with.

I get bored. You can only push the framerate so high on either quality, and the hero itself has never had that good of recording capabilities.
The htc roms are 'decent' looking because their encoding is handled better and optimized for the proprietary omx libraries which we have no source too

[COMPARISON] Sense Camera Vs AOSP Camera

There's a lot of discussion about the differences between the Sense Camera and the AOSP camera going on. It's quite often the deciding factor on whether to go with a Sense ROM or an AOSP.
This thread is basically a side by side comparison of how each camera can perform in different conditions. So people have a rough guide to go by. I've taken a few images of identical scenes using each camera, and will display them together in the following posts.
I am by no means a photographer, or an expert on the science behind digital imagery. I just noticed the amount of talk going on about this subject, and thought maybe some evidence would be nice. I hope it serves some kind of purpose.
The images were taken using the highest quality conditions on each camera. And using the auto (aosp) or smart scene (sense) settings.
One thing to note is that the outdoor shots were taken a day apart. The Sense shots were taken on a rather cloudy overcast day, and the AOSP shots were taken in mostly sunny conditions. Even though the Sense shots were taken in darker conditions, they are visibly much brighter.

Wow that supprised me... I would expect sense to be allot better. It does better in low lighting. But on regular lighting stuff it looks prettier than sense

Here's a comparison . . . but this one is double blind.
I spend nearly all my time on Sense ROMs, but I happened to be trying out the new BrickBeatz ROM yesterday. As the topic of the AOSP camera vs. Sense was being discussed on another thread yesterday, I decided to do my own test shots.
I've attached one AOSP pic, and one Sense. I've cropped the Sense shot, so you can't tell them apart by aspect ratio too easily (only cropped it by eye on the phone, you can probably figure it out by this if you really wanted, so no cheating!) and also renamed the files, so you can't tell that way either.
Shots were taken in artificial light (compact flourescent) in my kitchen. So the lighting conditions are the same for both shots. Of course, its just a shot taken under one set of conditions. Having a toddler running around limits my time to do more. But natural vs. artificial light, low vs. good light, and a bunch of other variables make it hard to say one is really "better" than the other, unless there is really a huge difference (which I personally don't believe to be the case). Add to this, the fact that there are a plethora of possible settings (and they are not remotely parallel between the 2 camera types) making direct comparison extremely difficult.
So there is just one comparison. Try to guess which is which.
I'm guessing aosp top, sense bottom.

I'll PM you the answer. Let some more folks take a swag at it, before I post the answer here.
I actually just jumped from CM10 to Venom, since CM10 Nightlies are having build issues (no fault of our dev, all upstream stuff) and I'd been curious about Venom for awhile.
I'm trying to get some good comparison pictures, but it is surprisingly difficult - CM10's camera is not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe I can take more later today in better setups, but none of what I've taken so far is worth posting...except the panorama shot I took, where the Sense camera is the clear winner.
Overall, the biggest difference is definitely in the software...Sense ROMs still have a ridiculously fast camera speed, with or without burst mode, and I'm not sure any AOSP camera can ever truly match that without access to the ImageSense chip that I believe handles some of this picture processing for the phone.
Hopefully more comparisons forthcoming as I find existing pictures to duplicate!

One other thing - the quality of still pictures taken while recording video is notably better on Sense ROMs. Again, I think this is an ImageSense feature...it's designed to handle the workload. AOSP ROMs essentially take a 1080p free-frame, but Sense ROMs take a picture at the standard resolution - though it's still definitely lower-quality than a picture without video would be.

Done.
I'll wait a bit more, and see if more people want to guess. Then I'll post the answer here.
My guess is that B is Sense, only because it's sharper. But that could easily just be a focus thing.
I'd love to see some more comparison shots contributed if anyone can be bothered. I won't be taking any for the moment, had a few issues changing between ROMs (backups not working, Sense and AOSP, grr.. fresh installs causing headaches.. my fiance becoming increasingly frustrated at me having my head in my phone too much haha).
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium
to me the main difference is when you are on a aosp or aokp rom you cannot set the camera resolution to 6mp widescreen and take advantage of the whole screen as the viewfinder,
it has to do with the call to getsupportedpicturesizes not returning 6m widescreen in the list...

Okay, so here's the answer:
If viewed on the XDA phone app, the top of is Sense, bottom is AOSP.
If viewed on a computer browser, Photo_A (first photo) is Sense, Photo_B (second) is AOSP.
Surprising eh? Photo_B (bottom pic) is distinctly sharper, and its the AOSP camera. Of the 4 people that posted their guess, all of them got it wrong and assumed the sharper one is Sense. Personally, I would have thought they would be indiscernible, or Sense to be slightly better. So I'm as surprised as anyone.
Of course its just one photo in one specific light condition. There are a huge number of possible light conditions and setting possible. So of course, we can't make an overall judgement based on 2 pics. But its interesting, nonetheless.

Interesting! What were the focus settings for each? I assume they were both automatically focusing on what was in front of them? Or did you have the AOSP camera set to focus on the center every time you take a picture? Did you try tapping-to-focus on Sense? Did you try setting Sense to 8 MP instead of cropping it to match AOSP?
Not nitpicking - just honestly curious what settings you used

Auto focus in both cases. Didn't tap focus on Sense. Just a quick and dirty test, since I happened to be switching ROMs. Completely anecdotal and nonscientific. I was literally doing this while my 2-year old daughter was running around playing in the kitchen, and I was supposed to be watching her! lol
But I was careful to get as good a shot as possible in both cases, using default settings. One might point out that maybe my hand moved just a bit more when taking the Sense shot. But as far as I'm concerned, how easy it is to get a clear photo is part of what makes a camera "good".

Should be 8MP regardless of the aspect ratio, shouldn't it? But I used the "Large" (highest) resolution, anyhow. I didn't think of changing the aspect ratio when I took the shot, so that's why I had the idea of cropping it later. In any case, I don't see how it would make a difference. The difference here seems clearly a matter of focus and sharpness, not resolution.

Camera Improvision

So, I have been messing around. And I have come to find that the stock Camera.apk and CameraFirmware.apk from the SGS4G on froyo 2.2.1 are mostly compatible with the Sidekick 4G. In fact the camera looks better, and we could possibly port the zoom features somhow 0.0 so I have been trying to figure out how I can get started with this "idea". It would be awesome, there are a couple bugs so far.
Bugs:
-No zoom (yet)
-No highest res in Video Recorder
-Some resolutions have no review screen
-front camera is flipped 90 degrees cc ( I wanna work on this first really, if I can get some help starting it)
Just looking for stuff to do with my limited current knowledge.
(Sorry, still new to informative posting -_-)
I just linked some shots
Here is plain camera view, you can pinch and see the zoom box but the image doesn't change
--> https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/83829634/Android/Screenshots/device-2013-06-15-114243.png
Here is the flipped-sideways front facing shot --> https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/83829634/Android/Screenshots/device-2013-06-15-114814.png
And last, here is the said apks:
Camera.apk --> https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/83829634/Android/CameraApks/Camera.apk
CameraFirmware.apk --> https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/83829634/Android/CameraApks/CameraFirmware.apk
That would be nice to have if it works better. The camera is one of the weakest links on this device I think.
I know little to nothing about the cameras hardware or software, you may just need to match the libs but you also may need to rewrite drivers, that part is hard.
Keep us posted, very interesting!

It would be awesome to finally have a camera with zoom is what I have been thinking. I'm not very good when it comes to code, I've still been taking courses and practicing here and there. But as far as testing it out, I can practice on my own device and let you know if I figure some things out.
Maybe another thread somewhere has the information I need to get started. Flipping the screen should probably be easy. (Hopefully heh)
Update
Haven't found anything too helpful as for the screen flip. Maybe I am looking in all of the wrong places? Tried Google-- got nothing, and maybe the forums use a certain term or something.
Maybe try to change picture size instead of screen flipin as the only big issue would be on screen buttons but should still work ?
If you still look for screen flip its basically the same screen same size an everything so instead of looking to flip change the location of them?
Sorry going off the few post with no pics or video of it

Ha! And here I've been thinking this is a good camera that takes pretty dang good photos! I also thought it did zoom but mine was broken
It's not the worst camera out there. I do wish they had included a flash though. The Sidekick LX 2009 (last Danger HiptopOS version) had a flash.
Just out of curiosity did they kinda downgrade i guess world be the word the sk camera. I notice in alot of aftermarket camera apps it registers as being 4.9mp like the sgs

Netflix HD [DISCONTINUED]

Because of lack of time this has been discontinued. I will leave these apk's here for anyone interested to study, hoping that someone will pick up where I left off.
Long time, no see. I just made a hack that I feel I should share with you all.
Attached is a hacked version of the Netflix app, I've modified it to try to raise the bitrate. On my galaxy nexus it brings the bitrate up from 750 kbit/s to 1750 kbit/s (3000 kbit/s in Netflix 2.4.1). I've also modified the seeker behaviour to be better matched for Android TV systems by changing the sticky seeker to 10 seconds instead of a value based on the movie length, which could make the seeker snap minutes away from where you wanted to be.
Notice that this app isn't signed with the Netflix private key, but the default key that came with apksign, so you will have to remove that app before using this one.
Enjoy!
Netflix 3 is out, but I still recommend Netflix 2.4.1. You can read why and download Netflix 3 here.
Netflix 2.4.1 (build 950)
Here are some exciting news. Super HD support for Nexus 7. I've modified the files to unlock that to all 4.3 phones, but there's a performance issue on my phone so I cant test it. Therefore I will upload three files this time. One that should be capable of Super HD and two more limited.
16x maximum bitrate
This should be capable of Super HD, if your phone can handle it and uses Android 4.3.
Maximum 3850 kbps
I haven't been able to test this much, it's more than Galaxy Nexus can handle.
Maximum 3000kbps
This is what the Galaxy Nexus can handle. For image comparison, please visit the link in the second post.

Colder interest than I expected. Here's some screenshots
Comparison
This is actually the movie that made me do this hack, because this very scene felt so extremely sluggish. I find the extra bitrate does more justice to the stars
Nice
Add rotation and make it black and we have a deal.

I've added an upgrade that you might like. It increases the minimum bitrate to what was previously the maximum bitrate, to avoid too low bitrates. It has the rotation fix you asked for too.
please modify the latest netflix (2.4.0) and post it here for us.. I really really liked your modification, its superb.. keep it up

Also it would be great if you can set the minimum bitrate to 1750 and max bitrate to 6000 or something..

Actually, that forced a bug where the video wouldn't load, but I added the last netflix app (2.4.0 build 939) anyways. It has the previous hack where the minimum bitrate is set to the previous maximum bitrate and maximum bitrate is 16 times the previous maximum bitrate.
Enjoy!
This is great. Thanks!

Guess I need to check this out.
Version 2.4.1 is out, with the HD and Super HD limits removed if you have Android 4.3.
If you try this out and have Android 4.3 please let me know if which one works best.
This is great, quality is much better. No android 4.3 here yet so cant test superhd unfortunately.
Any way of checking the bitrate? Example short 23.x doesnt show the bitrate overlay..

Don't have Android 4.3, but this version should definitely give the best possible quality on 4.2.2
Thanks a lot.. Will try tonight..

Well, no, not on the binary I've shared here. You have to check the Netflix logs for that and having that enabled in production build costs a lot of performance. I could maybe fix a debug build for you when I have time over, but I can't say for sure when that'll be.

The cold interest is because there have been plenty of "HD Netflix" apps that have all proven to be false. I am sending you a PM.
Not saying that yours is.
Keychar can you please let me know which part of the apk did you modify to change the bitrate?
I already decompiled it but I can't find it. I'd like to test the SuperHD one on my Galaxy Note 2, which is running 4.1.2
I sideloaded this to OUYA, and it works GREAT, much better quality than the normal app, better subtitle size too, just perfect. Thank you so much!

That is a change in the file called bitrange, if I recall correctly. I would recommend that you use a diff program to find out exactly what I've changed, that's a lot easier than for me to go through the changes.
edit: For 4.1.2 it's not in bitrange, that is only for non-HD and non-SuperHD bitranges. Still, I recommend that you use a diff (such as WinDiff) to find my changes.
