[APP] Moto Skip tag creator - Moto X Themes and Apps

Here's a quick APK to allow you to create a base Skip tag to activate NFC unlock. Apparently non dev devices don't have this available out of the box.
A few notes.
You can't re-write this tag using the Moto X. The NFC service intercepts these tags and won't deliver them to another app to write (even with foregroundDispatch set up as far as I can tell). You can freely overwrite it with any other device though and it will work with any app again on the Moto X
This should allow you to use a tag as a Skip tag as well as expose the NFC Lock Screen option and Manage NFC Unlock options under security settings (see screenshot) if you don't have an official skip tag. Using this you can create new skip tags using any writable tag and add them to your supported tag list.
Grab it here: http://goo.gl/5bUqPW
NFC Lock settings

FYI: Once you have the NFC unlock option in the lock screen part of setting you can just hold up any writable tag at the add new tag step, and the phone will write the skip code on to the tag.

You can even use a blank tag as your primary tag. No Skip tag needed.
No, the phone doesn't tell you this.
Just an FYI.

This is for everyone that does not have this exposed. Apparently this is most carrier devices. The NFC unlock lock screen does not appear until after they scan a skip tag. This is just to encode a single skip so they can scan it and effectively unlock the option. Dev devices don't appear to have this issue (gsm at least) as it is available out of the box and works fine with any writable, supported tag.

Yeah, saw that. Edited post to show that.

Thanks for the app OP. It worked great. I programmed two tags. I also have an assortment of magnets I'm testing for turning on NFC.
Sent from my Moto X.

What am I missing? I have a VZW Rooted Moto X (non-dev). I installed this app but don't see the NFC security options. I even went into the Skip app and scanned a tag and it said created successfully.

Tap that tag you created, it will take you through the setup. After that the NFC unlock options will be present.

That literally does absolutely nothing. I've tried with two tags. It says write successful but subsequent scans (while app is open or closed) do literally nothing. FWIW, clicking "settings" does nothing either.

Beats me. This just creates a copy of a skip tag. Once the tag is encoded as a skip tag it won't be delivered to apps any longer and should be picked up by the moto skip sw. You didn't freeze these moto apps as recommended in many threads to save battery? Outside of that idk. It's handled internally by the NFC service and the moto software.

You do not need to have a skip. That is the whole point of the app.

There was an update to Skip Setup in the play store. I installed it and now everything is working. THANKS!

This seems to get NFC tags formatted properly, and then the skip application itself sets them up and says they're good to be used, but after that point the phone no longer responds to them - almost as if the NFC tag just doesn't exist when you hold it to the phone. They're still listed as being paired in the NFC Unlock. I wipe them with another phone, and all of a sudden my moto x "sees" them as an NFC tag again. They can't be used as skip tags past the setup process. GSM Dev edition here with latest skip app update.

That is done on purpose. The Moto X incerpets the tag before an NFC app will recognize it. The tags will still work to NFC unlock the phone.

You're right. I noticed it working once out of many tries and now i tried again and figured it out - they only work when the phone's screen is on and at the lock screen. They don't work like the skip itself, where it can actually wake the phone/turn on the display and unlock it. That's why I didn't think they were working. Interesting.

The real skips have a small magnet in them that cause NFC to wake up.

Works as intended, pretty good.

just bought some blank tags. can't wait to try it out since my hometown has nothing NFC related i can start the trend
only ideas so far are a tag for my night stand which will activate alarm and maybe leaving one on the door at a local restaurant so i can check in.
Android Beam has some potential, but right now is rather limited in its ability to transfer information. I think it would be much more useful to be able to share photos, songs, ringtones, etc via NFC. The current implementation is rather lame, although Jelly Bean looks like it adds a few new NFC enabled tasks.
I'd do this -
At work - a tag to check in on Foursquare, turn WiFi off, and turn my sound down.
In the car - a double touch tag that will turn Bluetooth on, turn wifi on, turn the volume up and possibly start some music on one touch. On another tap, it will turn BT off.
At home - turn wifi on, turn BT off (I'll probably keep forgetting the "off" tap in the car), checking at home on G+ (for latitude friends) and turn volume up.
I wish I could duplicate my access badge for work with my phone...lol.

4 of my close friends have Gnex's (and might I say my phone looks the best and is the fastest ) and we use Android Beam for common stuff. Its pretty nice.
I wish we could use Google Wallet though.

I agree with other comments earlier. It would be a great replacement for work badge especially since I work in a large building where you need to swipe badge on almost all doors and it is a pain (figuratively) to have the badge around neck at all times.

[MOD] NFC for Verizon GS3! NFC Enabled While Screen Off / Locked

***UPDATE***
I upgraded to ParanoidAndroid and had to use a different apk. I don't know who made this one (i downloaded like 10 from xda and tried about 4 before it started working), but here's the winner:
techneesh.com/paranoidandroidnfcscreenoff.apk
*****************
Hey guys,
I searched for hours but could only find reports of people *NOT* getting this to work on the Verizon GS3 (hence the name of the thread).
I tried hacking my stock Nfc.apk using dex2jar & modding the smali files (after looking up the appropriate values to change using decompiled dex2jar classes.dex's nfcservice.java), but after much frustration decided to just go ahead and try the existing versions out there.
By the way, if anyone is looking for how to do this (decompiling/modding/recompiling an apk) with 4.0.4 (and getting the 'bad magic number with smali/baksmali), refer to the comment on May 8th in this thread.
I'm pleased to report that mayhemer's AT&T version (for the SGS-I747) works for us Verizon folks!
You can grab it on his thread here.
I've also uploaded it to my server. Here's a direct link:
techneesh.com/Nfc.apk
I posted this in the Development section because I would really like to encourage devs to work on modding Nfc functionality further. Also, this is a more advanced mod for a system app.
Google Wallet did not throw errors with this .apk (as it did with others), although I have not tested it yet.
NFC reads trigger the nfc tag's function and the alarm/beep, but do not turn on or unlock the screen (while it is off).
Also, I just got a whole bunch of NFC tags in and plan to make some cool products for them... if you have any ideas let me know on my 3D-printing-on-demand-for-xda-samsung-gs3-folks thread.
Note- I am on Bean's Custom Stock R3.1 07/28 (I know, I need to upgrade)
4.0.4, SCH-I535, Baseband I535VRLF2, Kernel 3.0.38imoseyon+, Hardware I535.10
Instructions for apk:
1. Get apk onto your phone
2. Stop NFC (or else your phone will start lagging // freezing after the next step)
3. Copy the apk to /system/app/ with a root explorer and overwrite the existing Nfc.apk (you should make a backup first)
4. Change permissions to match other system apks (rw-r--r--)
5. Reboot & re-enable nfc. Profit. Share your uses.
For zip you should be able to just flash in cwm.

think about it - you get to your desk and want to tether / turn on music / silence phone. just tap it on the nfc sticker on your desk. done.
you get into your car and want to enable gps / turn on music / navigate somewhere. tap your phone to the nfc sticker. done.
i have a lockscreen for security and even though it only takes a second to open it still adds up over the course of the day. the ability to quickly do (any) task on your phone without unlocking it or even pressing a button is huge.
for example, I canceled home internet last year when I got LTE but this means I have to turn on tethering every time i sit down at my PC. using a tasker nfc-activated command I can just touch my phone to my desk and it's on. time saving and just fun.
or maybe you are in a meeting and miss a call and want to call them back - have a pre-programmed nfc sticker that will command your phone to set an alarm for (e.g.) 1 hour. tap your phone to it without fiddling /unlocking/interrupting your meeting further.
what really made me think of this is while I was looking for something behind a wardrobe and wanted to turn on my LED flashlight on my phone. how cool would it be to have an nfc sticker (on your keychain? on a sliding mechanism on a custom techneesh.com case on your phone?) that could basically act as a 4th hard button to do a custom function (in this case, turn on the LED flashlight without 1. turning on screen 2. unlocking 3. going to home screen 4. finding LED flashlight app and opening)
and yes, this is for real
I'm trying to get this to work on CleanROM 2.5, with the G7 baseband. I followed the steps correctly, but it doesn't to anything different than the stock NFC
I can still read my tags when screen on and unlocked, but i get no response with the screen off or on and locked.
Triskite, did you modify the .apk from the linked At&t SGSIII thread at all? If not, would it be safe to try the other apk's listed there?
Thanks!

Just saying this is as of the moment the most unsafe mod someone can implant or put a nfc tag somewhere to run malicious code on your device. While I do not condone hacking of any sort, I know the possibilties of what these hacks can do from different forums (not naming any).

Yea, I understand the risks and all.
I agree that it is a major security vulnerability for someone that wishes to highly protect their information.
I just wanted to try it for a proof-of-concept kind of thing.
Honestly its pretty quick to flash these via Cwm. I went back to stock Nfc.apk for parties/bars this weekend (Too many people close to me for security comfort), then today I flashed the lock screen version for my school week.
It would be really cool if it were possible to toggle this.

True, but this involves active running processes like GPS which can drain your battery. From my experience, NFC has no noticeable extra drain, not even the screen off modified version. Not to mention how easy it is to use the NFC programming apps versus Tasker, IMO.

NFC Tags/Stickers

Anybody used any with their new Moto X yet?

Topaz 512 chips by WhizTags.
I'll let you know if they work, don't see any reason they shouldn't though.
I'd also be interested in what you use them for. I never got them for my Galaxy S4 because I was never sure what I would do with them. I understand how they work and what the potential uses are, but what is useful in the real world?
I'm currently using some rewritten droid tiles tags that I was using with my galaxy nexus. They work, but the Trigger app flashes on the screen when I scan them.
I've been using tags with profiles for a while now and I don't think I could go back. The automation achieved by tags beats any other process I've tried.
For example, when I leave my room I scan a tag which turns off WiFi and changes volume settings. Then, when I get to my car I scan another tag that turns on Bluetooth, launches Car Home Ultra, connects to my Bluetooth FM transmitter, and plays Pandora. Its much easier than unlocking the phone and changing the settings and launching the apps manually.
I plan on attaching one to my car dock for launching google play music, and pairing with my stereo.
And maybe putting one on my TV remote for launching Netflix or something.
But really I'm just looking forward to experimenting.
I really liked having root so I could modify the NFC apk to allow NFC with the screen locked or off. I know its a security concern, but unlocking the screen is a minor inconvenience.

No. The screen must be on and unlocked. This makes it too inconvenient to overcome the usefulness. If I have to power on and unlock the screen I might as well just manually turn on or off whatever feature I wanted at that point.

I used to use them with my Galaxy nexus. Here's what my setup was:
Office - disable BT, enable wifi, and set all sounds to vibrate
Car - enable BT, disable wifi, set sound to appropriate level and launch Spotify
Home - disable BT, enable wifi, and set sound to appropriate level
I would scan them upon arrival at one of those places. While they were useful, I found that there wasn't anything that they could do that I couldn't also do with Tasker. Although, I think the NFC tags are probably a better option since NFC uses minimal power as compared to Tasker functions (depending upon how you set them up, that is).
I haven't set the NFC stuff up since I got my X, but I will likely do so soon.

With latest firmware (G930FXXU1APD1-G930FDBT1APC5-DBT) Im having problems when unlocking the device with fingerprint. It does not allow me, but instead I get:
“Enter pin instead of using fingerprint recognition because of security policy”
And I have to use the PIN.
This happens when locking the display with “lock wedged”. If the lock is made with button (power) ... or time out display. Then I can normally use the fingerprint.
Does someone also facing the problem?
Is there any solution – setting?
Best.

Yes i had this and tried to reset my fingerprints when i tried that settings error and closed, then i couldnt change anything, pin, fingerprints, couldnt even factory reset. Cause it always asked for my pin and after i entered it settings would error rebooting didnt help. Finally using android device manager from my pc i had to do an erase. My s7 is stock and it had nothing disable at the time this happen.

there might be extra Policy set on ur device.
go to setting > Security > click on Clear Credentials
+ also check what is ur device administrator
:good:
I had that even on my Nexus 6P when using Nova's double tap to lock feature. I think it's something to do with Marshmallow actually.

Clear credentials is not active.
Device Admin - APP is added.
So the error is still there.

You can try Samsung's Good Lock app from Galaxy Apps store or, if you live outside U.S., from apkmirror.com. It's a System UI update that allows fingerprint unlock with third party locking widgets.
@ avah
This actually works. But ... then I get totally different lock screen display etc... that I actually don’t like.
So ... till now ... no real solution.
Best.
Hay
Question.
Is it possible to flash the phone back to previous ROM version via Odin… and you won’t get Knox void .. or something else??
I'm thinking to go back to previous ROM when lock and fingerprint worked OK.
Best

You can find details on that thread about this problem.
I'm having the same issue and I must say it is very annoying. Can't really see any reason why this should interfere with the security. Should be my choice to be honest. Would be nice to have a solution to this. Looks like it's been an issue for a long time as well. Found some threads about the 6P for example with the same issue.
Try use other app to pass that policy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.luutinhit.doubletapscreenoff

Yes but the problem still remains so it was a good initiative. I've got a brand new S7 and I find this very annoying. If I switch off my screen with Nova, I have to use fingerprint+PIN Code to unlock. If I switch it with physical buttons, I only have to use fingerprints..
Fixed
Search 4 knock on app on playstore.
Instal
Tap on create icon. Turn off the rest options
Fixed by installing a third party screen locker.

Your app is too many pop-up ads, so bad. I uninstall it quickly.

Unlock on wrist option vanished?

Hey all,
There was an option to keep the watch unlocked when it was the wrist but I can't find it anymore and it is annoying to have to manually unlock all the time.
Did this option vanish for all people? I guess it was taken away in the last update.
I am on version
March security patch / Wear 1.5
Build Number 0WDD.180215.018

Not sure about a specific option, but mine doesn't do that. Maybe because I enabled always on display. That's under developer options.
Yes there was a specific option that has totally vanished.

I have always on option under display settings then under gestures tilt to wake, touch to wake, wrist gestures.
You can also change settings in Wear OS on phone

It's not tilt to wake or gestures that is now removed from the software, it's about the unlock.
There was an option to keep the watch unlocked when it was on the wrist so that the pin only needed to be input when you were not wearing / removed from arm and no heartrate detected.

This is crazy, now my watch asks for PIN even after 15mins since I used it. Can't use it normally
Seems that I need to ask Amazon for refund if this will work lie this.
The pin can be turned off but then it leaves the watch open if you lose it. In my case I find it accidentally does stuff while I am asleep or my daughter messes it up.

i have found that disabling the PIN also disables Google Pay. and even after re-enabling it, you have to set it up all over again.
from my understanding, the watch knows when it is on your wrist, so maybe you need to tighten the strap or check the heart rate monitor to always on.

Hmm, maybe when enabled Google Pay it removed the option.
I'll try disabling google pay and see if the option comes back - I can't use it in Germany anyway, I only want to use GPay when I am back in UK.
