[Petition] Samsung and AT&T: Unlock the bootloader of the Galaxy S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I have started a petition on change.org to Samsung and AT&T to get the boot loader unlocked. I saw some other people petition other companies a little while ago to unlock the bootloader of a phone and when they reached the required amount of signatures they released a software update and BOOM it was unlocked. Sign it here if you like: https://www.change.org/petitions/sa...oot-loader-for-the-samsung-galaxy-s4-sgh-1337

I believe there is already a petition for this same exact thing with ~383 signatures on it. http://www.change.org/petitions/samsung-usa-at-t-unlock-the-bootloader-of-the-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-2

Nice if only that would work with At&t great what you're trying but it will just get no where fast. unless you hold the CEO of Att hostage and make these demands probably not going to get to many results.

Best if we use this petition, there are more people who signed up already, including me.

Gfl

I emailed Samsung and got this reply
"We would like to inform you that the devices released through carriers are bootloader locked version’s. However, the devices with unlocked bootloader’s are available through Verizon and AT&T. Hence, we request you to check with the carriers for further information regarding the query."
Makes it sound like its the carriers are the ones requesting the boot-locks and that some of there phones aren't locked which is kinda weird. I'm going to contact att tomorrow and ask If I can trade my phone for one without a bootlock as I just bought it. I do not expect this to work but it worth trying and I want att to know that I do not like being sold lock down phones.
Anyways I signed both petitions
if I get any good news from att I will post an update, but more then likely I will just get the classic run around.

Samsung is completely correct and this has been known for a long time now. The unlocked devices they are talking about are the developer and GE phones. AT&T and Verizon branded S4s are bootloader locked. If you want to read through the forums, there is a lot more information available about all of this. Good luck.

signed, hope they release an unlock soon, i guess this may happen only later when a new flagship arrives

CEO and chairman of ATT. This is the CEO of ATT, not just ATT wireless, be calm, be professional and be polite. Nothing a boss hates more than several emails from actual rational customers about how his subordinates are doing their job.
Emailing him and blasting twitter/facebook is the best way to get a response. Unfortunately you need MANY people doing it at once. However, samsung devices probably have the biggest userbase besides iphone on ATT. The same issues we have are also present on the Note 3 and other samsung devices no? They are all locked down too right? Getting everyone to blast ATT calmly, rationally, professionally, and most important, PUBLICLY, will get a response if the number of comments is high enough. About once a week I have been tweeting at all the different ATT accounts and emailing various executives and samsung. They just need enough people to understand that people really don't like it being locked down.

Just wondering
Do they have to unlock the boot loader when you have had your phone for 2 years? Seems like at that point I have paid back the subsidy and the phone should be mine. I am glad to see things moving away from subsidized phones. God I hate Samsung. Their touchwiz interface is the worst piece of trash in the world. All their junk software sucking my battery dry.

They don't have to ever unlock it. Samsung isn't really the enemy here, mostly AT&T since they're the one locking it. And I've run this battery for days on the stock system.

I took my phone off the charger about an hour ago to read a text message. I haven't done anything with it. Just checked the battery is down to 93%. If I leave it off charge it will be dead in the morning. It wasn't like this before the 4.3 update.
I know AT&T is the enemy, but what choice. Verizon is also the enemy. T-Mobile is better, but the coverage is not good.
Not like there is much of a choice. Actually I have no choice because my work place only allows us to use Verizon or AT&T. They both suck.
However I am going to switch my wife over to T-Mobile when her contract is up this summer.

Still waiting on MF3
I still haven't updated to MK2 from MF3 fearing I will not be able to go back if any solution for bypassing the bootloader comes up for MF3.. I had signed up for the petitions long back and now it is good to see that the numbers have increased since then. However I dont think anything will be done by AT&T even after the petitions reach the goal..

the easiest route would be to trade for a tmobile galaxy s4 or if you have the disposable income just buy the i9505, i kinda agree no matter how many petitions we sign it will never be enough, so much for android being the " open platform " that it was supposed to be.

I'm not sure, but the international may not have the same radio bands for LTE. You'd have to compare them.

What I'm confused about is, how isn't there a way to "ODIN" our phones with the GPE edition stock ROM/Bootloader/etc. Isn't the hardware identical other than the factory software that's loaded on it?
Then again, that would be too easy..

I'm sorry but this is utter garbage. If any of us had known this was the way things were going to play out we would have held out for this one in the first place. This is really just unbelievable. First we are led to believe our SG3 is going to be the same as the rest, only to find out we have a locked boot loader, now they dangle a $600 "developer" edition in front of us after most people interested in the developer aspect have already pre ordered the regular one? Am I the only one who is really ticked off about this?
Good for Samsung, Verizon still sucks. If I had $600 I would buy one.
I assume this device would ship minus the ongoing wifi notification?

Yep, this honestly just made me even more mad at them. Why can't they just give us an unlock tool just like htc where its in their system?
Will this impede the developer efforts being made to unlock the subsidized model or will the devs deem it a waste of time?

I'm worried this will set us back. Why mess with locked if you can just buy unlocked? Except not all of us are gonna be able to just eBay ours to buy this, whenever its actually released. I'm hoping the devs don't abandon this project.
Well, I think developers would like to test out encrypting the bootloader, so it should DEFINITELY come with a tool to enable encryption of the bootloader. And it should also allow them to disable the encryption afterwards obviously... right?
Hopefully Samsung will do the right thing and leave a loophole for us.
I am slated to receive my SGS3 via FedEx tomorrow. I am currently a customer with Sprint, and I had planned to drop Sprint for Verizon upon activating this new phone. I am seriously having second thoughts now.
The biggest reason for choosing the SGS3 for me was because historically, Sammy hasn't restricted their devices by locking the bootloaders. I came from using two EVO devices (4G and 3D), which had increasingly difficult-to-crack bootloaders. Though I eventually achieved S-OFF with both devices, I wanted to support a company whose track record indicated community with developers, not antagonizing us.
I knew I wanted to drop Sprint, and I will never, ever consider AT&T again. So, I have my pick of two carriers to choose, and I chose Verizon based on their LTE network which is both new and fast in my area. I will probably hold my phone unopened and unactivated for a couple of days until I decide.

I don't think they will. I've been going back and forth with keeping the phone or taking my chances with Sprint. I just got the phone today and decided I'll keep it on Verizon.
I think that there aren't many people out there ready to shell out 600 bucks for a phone. After all, look at how many "unlocked" phones you can buy, but yet people still get the contract phones. I have to agree with the other posters about how if anything, it will help us out with the locked phones. Who knows, maybe it's as simple as using the odin tool to flash a backup of an unlocked phone....considering they are probably the same model numbers.

This is crazy, but I do not feel like returning mine and then going to buy another one. Why can't samsung just release an unlock code or something for everyone? You really want to get some customers PO'd do what exactly samsung is doing. I know once I am due for an upgrade again samsung will be down low on my list right above moto if they do this and do not give those of us who bought it an option to unlock.

Developer Edition Verizon GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader

Like the title states, Samsung will be releasing a Verizon Developer Edition GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader. Thoughts? Comments? Curse words?
I mainly want to know, will this impact our data plan if we purchase this product.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-offer-hacker-friendly-developer-edition-galaxy-s-iii?utm_source=ac&utm_medium=twitter
This pisses me off even more than the bootloader being locked in the first place. Not only would I have to sell my normal S3, I'd have to wait for one of the developer ones, most likely with a tiny stock, to ship to me. I don't know how Samsung could possibly think this is a valid solution after the majority of people who want to hack their phone bought it when it came out.

Any chance this could help people on here unlock the bootloader on the VZW S3?
I'm also slightly skeptical of this. I don't see this anywhere else but on some blogs. I can't find anything official from Samsung.
Hmm, according to CNet, Samsung sent this out as an email. That could be why there's no official release.
I also don't see that you can currently buy anything from http://developer.samsung.com

it should be noted guys that hardware wise its prolly gunna be the same.. ergo flashing the low level partitions will prolly "convert" ya
im just saying that based on speculation..

I don't know why people support this, or why people are assuming we'll magically be able to flash the developer firmware/bootloader to our standard Verizon Galaxy S3s.
Haven't read into it yet but is this version only available unsubsidized? Or can it be purchased at a subsidized price if I haven't upgraded yet?

using something like dd to write every single partition to another device and basically "clone it" would then bypass the checks for certain software.

No, that wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular- I was more referring to the tons of support the model was getting in the IRC channel.
I don't understand it, because I seriously doubt it will help.
It's possible, but I'm really doubting it.
Regardless, unless it does prove as a method for allowing consumer-level devices to be unlocked, it is practically useless to almost all Galaxy S3 owners on Verizon.
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just disgusted Samsung and/or Verizon would think this is an okay alternative.
Also, how about all that "unlocked devices will hurt the network" stuff from Verizon? I believe there's a bit of a contradiction here.
Edit: Just restating, no hard feelings towards you, shabbypenguin, or anyone else, it just blows my mind Samsung and Verizon would pull this.

You'll be buying directly from Samsung so there will be no subsidy. You'd have to sell your Verizon-bought phone and use the cash for this if you want to do it on the cheap.

Well this will make my wife happy. As soon as the developer version is available I'm going to get it and give the locked GS3 I just got today to my wife.
One question though, assuming the locked version can be unlocked, does that mean development for both devices will be the same? Or is it possible that they will have to have separate development?

Guys can we do anything about what HTC and at&t are doing to us?

okay so by now I have learned that it might not just be htcs fault but is most likely atts fault that were not getting the unlocked boot loader or the proper sources to be released
Why is att doing this? There's nothing positive for them or HTC in doing this
Is there anything we can do, does any one have connections with people in bigger companies that make this very public and sound like the huge issue that it is
Is there any else that we can do besides for that?
I think it would just be a good idea to brainstorm on wht to do to fix this dilemma

Vote with your dollars cancel service and tell them why.
Source has been released except for the most recent updates. Those will be released eventually.
I doubt AT&T is going to budge on the locked bootloader because the number of people who really care probably represent about 1% of their HOX customers.
If you're intent on pushing, the place to start would be making a stink on AT&T's social media pages.
Besides... we have unlocked bootloaders and root I'd love to go to Corporate AT&T and get to the guy who decides this stuff and show them my phone and tell them they can't stop us. There's ways around everything.

If you guys really want to try, just go to small claims courts claiming that you were convinced that you had the ability to unlock the bootloader, and use Peter Chou's statement on unlocking bootloaders as evidence, and then say that you couldn't unlock it. If you lose, nothing happens to you. If you win, and a lot of other people win, AT&T is going to be bleeding money.

I've never seen anything saying you couldn't sue AT&T. A Class action would be there to reverse their grip on a handset, which is HTC's flagship in North America (and arguably, the best phone out right now). It hurts devs more than anything.

its not HTC its ATT so that comment really didnt help. ATT wants the locked bootloader on all thier flagship phones. The dont want people to do tethering, and they want to be able to force you to keep that ****ty bloatware for the possible sales they would get from it. its flat out ATT greed that has them keeping the bootloader locked down. Unfortunatly right now HTC doesnt have the pull Samsung does to force ATT hand.

Then they better have the pull because people pay high amount of $ for their device and do not care whether they have the pull or not. Maybe htc should call themselves apple2 since all I read about them is giving devs hard time not releasing sources etc while on their webpage they claim to be dev friendly which is total bull****.
This new software update isn't good. Patching the hboot, no root, no bootloader unlock. We shouldn't expect any new developers developing for this phone. AT&T sealed that deal for us when they release 2.20.

I hear ya man. ****, I should have got an iPhone. At least I could pester Siri about her hot sister or ask advice on hiding bodies. Even iPhones are having better luck getting unlocked.
Regardless, I do love this phone. Probably the best phone since the Nexus One.
Like you said though, just a matter of time, and, will we have bootloader unlock access? I'm going to be hopeful. For anyone who buys their device with 2.20 loaded, it would really suck to not be able to at least achieve root.
Question, gunny... do you know (assuming one has root and TBU), is there a way to freeze the updates? Is their a system app or process that could be frozen so that OTA's never show again?

Verizon was on top of updates for the M7. Don't see why it'd change now.

Hopefully they keep the trend going but if history is any indicator, Verizon being prompt was more of a fluke than a new way of doing things.
What phones was Verizon last to get updates? People have been saying this before VZW even started getting the same phones as other carriers. It's like comparing oranges to apples. VZW has only had exclusive phones like the droid line and the incredible /rezound before the S3..For the S3, note 2, S4, ALL carriers INCLUDING VZW had them and I had updates same time as anyone else.
Can someone elaborate on what phones Verizon took months to update?

In my personal experience, the DroidX, Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Maxx. Google would release a version, the manufacturer would have to apply their changes and then Verizon had final approval. Not only does the handset manufacturer have to update for their kernel, UI (Sense, Blur (back in the day), etc.) but they would then put VZW's crap in there as well. 6 months was typical.

Those are VZW exclusive phones. We don't know if it was the manufacturer's fault or Verizon. It could've been Motorola's and Samsung's fault for the delay. That's why I said you can't compare exclusive phones.
I'm pretty sure a manufacturer would work harder and faster to update a phone that carriers across the globe have versus a phone that only one carrier in the world has. Example: Motorola X vs Maxx

GNex was by no means VZW exclusive.Sprint had an LTE version and GSM models were available in the Play Store.
But your point is valid - the bulk of the delay is with the manufacturer putting their crap on top of Android. Verizon has nothing to do in this process but approve - they're accepting delivery of the product when the manufacturer is done with it. That can still take a bit - I participated in several soak tests with Motorola where they are done with the update and they're testing the delivery. In a few cases there was a 2 week gap from the time of the completion of the soak test to the time it was released and that's Verizon, at least according to the Motorola employees in their forums.
The M8 is already the last phone to get the latest update. We still don't have extreme power saving mode without flashing a rom.

Hey now I don't NEED it persay. But there's been many timrs I could stand to place it into EPSM when my battery is low. Its annoying that every carrier got the updates awhile ago and L is coming out and we still dont have an estimate on any updates

Haha I know, it would be nice to have. Isn't Sprint the only US carrier with the update so far, though?

VZW was the first to get the 1.55 update . Why does xda always form cults against every carrier. Nobody is ever happy...same complaints in T-Mobile, Sprint, and att forums.

Are we still talking the m8? I've had my m8 since day 1 and the first update we got was AFTER a few other carriers already got EPSM. And I was stoked we would have it. Then I updated and realized it didn't include it and was disappointed. Not forming hatred at all. But wanted to at least have the option for espm on our phone.
Verizon needs to figure out how to break Root and S-off with 4.4.3 on HTC phones before they will push it out.............

Me as well, I ran @iB4STiD rom's for a long time then was forced into an update which locked my phone up so now I'm safestrapped for life. Really don't mind nj4 just want Lollipop. I have it on my Nexus 7 and with the update to 5.0.2 it's running smooth and quick.
Ask the important questions, man!
Does Samsung plan to unlock the i337 bootloaders with the lollipop update!?

I have an alleged i9505 with an AT&T BL.
however, the droid os belongs to samsung since they're the ones doing the edits, fixes and customization.

The issue is AT&T says we will buy it if you lock it to us so we can keep our customers and make it more of a chore to leave our company. Samsung says ok because we want the sales and that's why it's done... Samsung can care less once they sell you the phone what you do with it and they already built ways to know what you did to the phone for warranty returns. (So they can deny the claims that are caused by you not listening.)
If you want to get mad at anyone get mad at AT&T just like verizon they play every trick in the book.
That's why if you buy a phone full price you always go international version

I have heard of that happening from people that buy online but I don't know much about them I believe someone in one of the threads (that was an at&t or samsung source) said they were at&t branded internationals (meaning they were to be sold through at&t for corporate or maybe coverage outside the US?, though I don't know much more because I only stay up to date on the US versions
If you just bought it you might want to check your buying source (example amazon will give you a new phone if you buy the international that's meant to be used with several carriers), if you have owned it for awhile then you're in the same boat as the rest of us.
I don't think the bootloader will ever be unlocked unless..
A law requires them too...
Someone finally finds a exploit (which because less likely as more people switch to newer phones)
They have a security leak like Sony where the key is discovered.

Or at the very least stop the store worker from updating it when you first activate it. When I bought mine she took it out of the box, turned it on and immediately accepted the update notification and installed it after it downloaded when she put the screen protector on..
@Apoplectic1
You should have made her give you different one. I do not and will not allow a store clerk to setup or mess with a phone I'm buying. :good:

I would have had I known that AT&T locked their bootloaders. This is the first phone that I have owned that had one, and until I tried to mess around with it I had no idea that one could lock a bootloader.
Sadly, I won't be able to get the Lollipop update unless I want my phone locked down forever because I am one of the few people that is still on the MDL firmware which can use the LOKI bootloader bypass to boot custom ROMs.
