New contacts delete by themselves.. - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I'm having a strange problem with contacts just deleting and disappearing
By themselves. Just recently I've been texted and texting new people. But EVERYTIME I add them (3 did people) they then automatically delete, except for the text messages exchanged. I can add them from the messaging window and then when I go back into my contacts list those names are no longer there and in the messaging app (not even a 3rd party app am I using atm, literally the stock one..) It only shows the phone number all over again as if its a just a random person/ unknown person that hasn't been added to the contacts. Please help, this is very frustrating .

Have you tried going into Settings > Accounts (& Sync), and seeing if your Google account has Synced Contacts?

Yes, and the answer is that it SAYS it has synced, but its not happening because it's being deleted.

This happens to me sometimes. I usually just backout of messages, and go back in and it works fine. Hasn't hapened for a few days though.
Happens to me ALL the time...
Yeah from my searching it's been happening to all of us at one point or another. I usually delete my facebook account from the phone and re-add them. Pics come back.
Here is the fix - you probably ran permission fix in CWM. This is one of the results...
Go into Applications - Manage applications
Go to ALL applications tab
Scroll down to Contacts Storage and click it.
Clear its data
Scroll down to Market
Clear data
Open market - accept agreement
Resync your contacts. This only erases the picture cache not your numbers. It gets corrupted when you run permission checks in CWM.
I had this same problem, it wasn't storing the picture right in the SMS app, and other apps like LauncherPro weren't able to pull any of the contact pictures. I also had it not syncing my Facebook picture with my local contact (which I find annoying).
What I did is added the Facebook for HTC Sense account, and let this sync. When I installed the FB app I told it to not sync anything.
Now everything is working great.

Second of all, don't ever save your contacts on your phone, that's what google sync is for. When you start restoring saved contacts and letting google sync run, you're creating a huge mess.
In your case I would clean up the contacts on google, then wipe your phone (not restoring any contacts saved on the phone) so that everything you have on google is what you have on the phone.
I did this a while back, and have been happy ever since.

Absolutely agree with you. After I rooted, i dont know what I did, but after i rooted, all my facebook contacts ended up on my phone. )And no, I didnt tell the facebook app to sync all) I think i added the google account and facebook accounts too fast and then hosed it up when it brought up suggested linked contacts. I just went to Google contacts, cleaned what i didnt want, made some changes to other contacts, cleared contact storage data, and had them all back how i like less than 2 minutes later. and i still had facebook for htc sense setup and it had everybody synced in about 5 minutes. been perfect ever since.

[Q] unread count using Gmail app

When i pull up my Gmail app in which i have 2 accounts...it gives me an incorrect number alot of times of how many new emails i have in there. Its not just emails i have missed way down the list either. i can log onto my account from a computer and they will be right there. its like when i delete them from the app it takes them off the list but doesnt always really delete them.
Is there a way i can fix this? or do you guys recommend the stock "email" app vs the "Gmail" app?
both accounts are Google based.
Thanks.

Try resetting your gmail app by wiping its data.

Contacts showing multiple only when searching

As the screen shots below show when im using the contacts its fine (1 contact per name) but when i search for a specific person 6 or more contacts show up for that name. I wouldnt mind this but when i save a new number say from a text message and try to add it to the exsisting its like a guessing game which one to put it under because only 1 shows up under contacts normally. If i add it to the first one it says saved but then going into contacts its never there.
Stock 4.0.4 rooted.

I have run into this. You more than likely have more than one account syncing your contact (google, samsung, verizon?) To get rid of the contacts (multiple) Sync them to only one account, delete all contacts, then resync. Hope this helps.

When you have multiple accounts syncing the phone can't always reconcile small differences. If you long press on a contact you can join it to another one manually. It's been something I've had to do since I let Facebook sync.

Not all contacts showing up?

I just noticed something odd. So yesterday, I imported all my contacts from google, and use SMS Back up Restore and Call Log backup and restore. all my texts/calls are back in my new phone, which is nice. I noticed something odd with contacts though.
Not everybody is showing up. I had my old phone synced to google. The weird thing is, I think the contacts ARE in the phone, but not showing up. Today, my friend Eric texted me. His name showed up and everything, so I assumed the contact was in the phone. I went to my contacts app and looked at the list of contacts, and he wasn't showing up! When I go to the text message he gave me and clicked on his picture, I could see his contact details! But the contact isn't showing up in the app. Anyone know what to do about this?
Under contacts, Filter > Display Contacts. I had to select my gmail accounts and make sure all the checkboxes for the groups were selected. By default it seems they were not so as with you some of my contacts were missing.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, but it looks like certain contacts on my old phone weren't saved as Google contacts. I thought that having google sync on would make it so all of my device contacts would sync to my google account. Apparently, that didn't work. Oh well. At least this phone defaults new contacts to google. Whenever I would add a contact on my S4, I'd have to change it from device to Google. Frustrating as hell

nexus 5 lost contacts?

Basically nexus 5 contacts disappeared. Running stock android 4.4 on t mobile. All contacts in people app have disappeared, except PayPal it seems. Strangely in Hangouts main screen it shows the names of contacts still, but if i try to call someone using the phone button in hangouts it shows just the number and no name. Ive tried manually syncing, and all settings "seem" to be fine. Any ideas?
Try logging into your Gmail account in your browser and see your contacts are even still there to be synced with your phone.

Are all your contacts synced with Google? If so, go to settings/Accounts/Google and see if your contacts are checked to sync

If your contacts aren't even showing in your browser then something wrong happened. Hopefully you didn't delete your contacts somehow but that's what it looks like. Maybe try and contact Google?
