I have sync enabled with my google account. I can get my gmail contacts on my phone. However, I do not see my phone contacts when I go to my gmail account.
What am I doing wrong? My contacts from my phone should show up in my gmail contacts right?

See if this helps. When in Contacts, tap the (hardware key) Menu and tap Display options. See if Phone and/or Sim is checked. That toggles the display of additional contacts saved in the Phone and SIM memory.
Scratch that. I think you want your phone and/or SIM contacts to show up in your Google Account on your PC right? I don't know how to do that... Sorry, I'm not so helpful after all.

in my contacts, on the phone, I see some contacts that have a "g" next to them. These equate to the ones on my gmail account's contact list. Most of them do not display the "g" though.

You're right, I want all of my On-Phone contacts to be sync'd into my Gmail.com contacts list on my pc. and any help is helpful
Your phone\sim contacts will not automatically move to google's contacts online. You have to move them manually. Here is what I did to move my contacts up there:
1. In contacts, under settings, go to Display Options and uncheck the option to show your google contacts. You will turn this back on later. For now, you just need to see the contacts that you want to move to Google.
2. Under settings, go to More and then Import\Export. Then choose to export to SD card. This will create a file on your SD card with your contacts in it. Make note of the location of the file. It will likely be the sd folder and a file called 00001.vcf
3. Exit the contacts app and go to the my files application. Find the file from step #2 and long press it. In the menu that comes up, select Share and then email it to yourself.
4. Now you should be able to get to the file on your computer by downloading it from your email.
(Alternatively if your phone is hooked up to your computer you could just find the file on it and copy it to your computer)
5. Go to google.com/contacts and import the vcf file. They will now be on Google and if you have contact sync on they will get pushed to your phone. I had some duplication between names on my phone and names I had in google so I had to spend some time merging and cleaning them up.
6. In the contacts app on your phone, undo what you did in step #1 by going to display options and checking Google. You will now see all of those contacts with a "g" beside them.
Note - this does mean that your contacts will show multiple times on your phone if your display options have it showing Phone, SIM, and google contacts. I ended up going in and removing all contacts from my phone and SIM card to resolve this. The captivate does try to link similar contacts together it may not bother you. I just decided I wanted all of my contacts in one place and nowhere else.
d'oh you beat me to it. I was doing a test myself to see if it works. It sure does and when I was about to post the instructions, there it was, yours. I couldn't have done a better job.
Nice! This will work.
However, I am quite disappointed that I can't just sync my phone contacts to my google account. It's one of the things I miss coming from WinMo using Microsoft MyPhone.
... you would figure with everything this phone does a simple task such as synching with your gmail account would be a no-brainer in the droid world.
Well.. nothing is perfect.
Thanks for this! I was looking for a way to do it and couldn't figure it out but never got around to asking
Yeah I agree, its kinda bs that they won't just sync. I use "uia back contacts" from the market. Works great with dropbox.

I know this is old topic, but I have a question about the procedure described previously for getting contacts into google...
What about in the future...if I add a new contact on the phone, will it then automatically sync up to google, or do I have to do this whole process again?

Hi all. I just migrated from my "old" HTC fuze and got on board the Android train with a Samsung Vibrant. It's fantasic out of the box, but I'm sure after a few more minutes on the forum I'll find something that needs fixing.
One thing that does need fixing is that when it syncs the contacts, it adds anybody I've emailed or responded to, outside of my contact list.
GMail doesn't add these people as contacts, but the droid does. Any fix for this short of going through my contacts every couple days and purging???
I hope this works for you, this is with my Droid Contacts.
Open Contacts -> Settings/More/Options button -> Display Options
There should be a "Choose contacts to display". Select your GMAIL account. Mine is currently set to "My Contacts" and everything else is unchecked. Also check the others listed. Gmail will store random outgoing/incoming emails, as All Contacts, where your contacts are "My Contacts"
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, all my contacts are google contacts, and nothing on the phone.
Is there any way to get gmail to not store all the various random emails and people I have contact with? I've dug through the settings and even tried to find something in the labs tab that might stop storage of ALL contacts, but couldn't find anything.

Double check my attacked image, else only other thing i can think of is to remove and readd your google account to your phone.
Ahhh, there's the problem. When I chose Contacts > Display Options, I get a checkbox for my google accounts - there is no drill down for which accounts I can select. I'm on the Samsung Galaxy.
BTW, what screen cap app are you using?
Ok if you can't stop the phone from, getting them then you need to delete them in gmail.
Cause gmail does save everyone you have every replied, or sent email to. It's under other contacts.
just go in there and delete all the ones you don't wont
is anyone else having this issue? My FB photos show up just fine under the persons name in the people app, but dont show up in the standard messaging app. stock rom
make sure you sync the facebook that's integrated into the rom and not the one from the app. then you should see the pics in the messaging apps.

you mean the one that comes with touchwiz
Open Contacts, go to Menu > More > Accounts
If facebook isn't listed, then click Add Account and add your facebook. Then make sure it's set up to sync.
Yeah I’ve been working on since I purchased the phone last week and I’ve been having the same issues. I did the contacts > more > account deal to no avail (syncing phone contacts only). The really frustrating part about that is when you open up the facebook contacts group, you see all of your facebook friends with their pictures…so I don’t understand why it won’t sync.
When you are in your contact list pick menu and check display options.
If you have contacts with numbers picked, take check mark off and see if you see them in your contact list now. If you see them now long press on the facebook contact and pick merge, look for the matching contact.
You con only merge from a maximum of 5 sources.
Hope this helps.

exactly, when people call me, there facebook photo shows up. it also shows their info if I actually go into the contacts app. But text messaging? yeah right, the only photos that show up are the contacts where I have manually picked a photo from the album. None from facebook.

thanks, but ive done all these things already. I really dont wanna wipe my handset if its not going to fix it. I would like some feedback from others to see if theres is working correctly or not. I never had this isse with any other android handset. its bugging the **** out of me.
going to bump this thread. i can't seem to sync my facebook contacts from the integrated accounts after flashing my new rom. not sure why, but i get the red error sync circle for it every time i try to sync. tried syncmypix, but the app only fc's...
I've never gotten that to work for my default SMS either. I don't really care for that anymore though, since I use handcent for SMS now anyways.
I had a problem with syncing my actual contact pictures once, but that was fixed by clearing my facebook data and relogging in.
yea, its definitely hit or miss.
so heres what happens for me...twitter contacts photos show up fine in the messaging app. Facebook still only shows from WITHIN contacts. But not in the messaging app.
I took someones recommendation and tried an app called syncmypic thats free from the market. It actually worked pretty good. Heres where it sucks though. I try to keep all of my contacts by first and last name to make it easier for apps to sync with fb and twitter. Well syncmypic syncs alot of data correctly. But some of them, it just cant get right. So it will tag the pictures to the wrong name. So i thought, "okay, no big deal, ill just manually fix em".
After I made all the corrections, the next time it went to sync, it changed everything i did back to what it wanted it to be. So in the interim, I have SOME FB photos for contacts in the messaging app, but they are a few weeks old, because Im scared to let syncmypix sync again and overwrite all the corrections ive made AGAIN. I dont know why I cant get the native messaging app to show FB photos. Ive tried countless roms, Ive tried every way recommended to fix it. Twitter works fine. FB just doesnt show in the messaging app for some reason.
Sucks because I feel like Samsung makes better phones, but HTC Sense phones have the contact sync feature down packed
The only pictures that show up for me with messages is people in my Google Talk list.
I tried something that worked, but its not 100%. First remove your facebook accounts in accounts and sync from both the program and the integrated accounts. Sign into the facebook app, but make sure not to sync contacts. Then go back to integrated accounts and login to facebook and when it asks to sync contacts, deselect "SYNC ALL CONTACTS". This will allow you to manually choose who to sync. When the new screen shows up that lists all of your friends, choose select all and sync. Do the same for twitter. Does this work?

There is an app called syncmypix. It will download your friends' pictures and set them to the appropriate contacts in your phone. All of my contacts have pictures in stock sms and their picture shows on an incoming call too.
EDIT: Didn't see there was a second page with this info. My bad
yea, syncmypix fc's a lot on my rom no matter what i do. it does a good job when it works though.
So every time you add a contact to your phone, google will sync all my contacts to my google account?
if i reformat everything, then connect google to my phone, all my contacts will be there on my phone?

I dont recommend using Google Sync. Its most most inbredly retarded system ever. Every time you sync it duplicates everything (which is not technically a sync). Right now I have anywhere from 4-7 copies of the same contact number, it creates a new copy if you change the name, or add an email address etc. Then you have to "link" them to not see the duplicates, then when you want to call or text it asks which of the 7 numbers you want to use (even through they are all the same exect effing number). Google needs to take the kid with the waterwings, helmet, and droolcup out of that position.
I also have yet to see where you can delete or edit the "database" where it syncs from. Because under my contacts in google, it only shows 1 number, 1 email address etc. Yet as soon as I "sync", bam, 7 copies of everything.

I wish I could tell you what you're doing wrong. I added my contacts through GMail - Contacts about a year ago. I've deleted then synced dozens of times and I still have the exact same 300ish contacts and they never double up. I used to have issues with contacts doubling up and creating more than necessary when I was on my iPhone - but since I've gone Android I've had no issues whatsoever.

sounds like you restored your contacts through MyBackup or something similar?
Google contact sync works great. Been using it for the last 3 year since I had an iPhone 3G. It definitely works much better on Android though.
I don't restore using backups, I restore using sync. Just for S&G's I wiped and synced again. It re-duplicated. I now have up to 8 entries for majority of my contacts.
I've read that if you go to Gmail (browser) and set up the contacts for your phone in a "My Contacts" folder, then wipe your contacts and load only "My Contacts" when syncing, that it will work. To me the dumb part is that you have to go in and set up every one of your contacts from scratch.
Instead of only giving the option to "link" all those duplicates it should give the option to merge, or delete select contacts.
Even though the contacts are "linked" when I go to People or whatever (the contacts app) so there is only 1 "entry" or listing, I feel that to be fixed by Sense. However, when I compose a new message, right off the bat in A's, it starts off with 5 entries for the same contact. An e-mail address, a 10 digit phone number, a + and then 10 digit number, and there two more for the 11 digit number (1 then number, and +1 then number)
It's really, really retarded.

I'm guessing this is not what the majority of people using Google contact sync experience. Like I said, I've been using this for awhile and this has not happened to me on my Inspire, and I've flashed several ROMs and had to resync my contacts over and over. I've never had to "start from scratch". Maybe you need to go to the google help forums.
Maybe this isn't my first android phone, maybe its happened since i had my captivate, maybe it also happens on a coworkers droid x, maybe it also happens on another coworkers nexus, may it does the same thing on everybody else I know's phones.
I never said i have to start from scratch, I said that seems to be the only way to set it up to work right, is to do it from GMail on a computer. Creating those contacts in a folder you create called My Contacts.
Do me a favor. Use a stock mms app. Go to create new text, then add recipients. Unless you set all your contacts up in the My Contacts tab of google before ever syncing from a fresh phone/flash, you will see duplicates there.
It is possible to merge your contacts thru Gmail online. It does a fair job of removing duplicates but not a perfect job.
You're not the only one who can't stand the way Google handles contacts. It's a major problem coming from WM6 and Outlook to Google. I'm hoping that HTC's tool to import contacts will work and I'll be able to clear out a ton of stuff from my Google contacts that's bogus.

Looking in my gmail contacts, they are indeed in a My Contacts group.
during sync I am facing following problems:
1. My android contact nos automatically converted from xxxxxxxxxxx to xx xxx xxxxxxxxx on google.
2. Added pictures not uploaed on google.
Is there any solutions.
in my contact list i see photos/icons beside a contacts name. some of those icons carry over when i text message some people and show up under messaging. a vast majority of the photo/icons dont populate when in messaging but will if i call them or look at their contact information.
something i can do to fix this?
Crickets....

It only carries over to texts if they have a gmail account photo (also known as a google profile pic)....even though your contact list will show profile photos from facebook, gmail, phone storage, etc.
Only way to fix this is get all your contacts to add a gmail profile picture

actually i think you have to set the photos in gmail.
but its weird because on my atrix and any other android pictures would be linked automatically via facebook, gmail, twitter.
my who contact list has pictures except when in messages no pic shows up.
Yeah I noticed it too, My Captivate didnt have this problem, its weird Ive noticed that in some areas the Infuse actually took a step back.

Hey guys try this. Today I acedently screwing around trying to edit a contact I tried deleting it and I coulndt and a pop up came up about read only and hit okay r confirm whatever and I really didn't pay attention to it. So I had to unsync my Facebook to get my contact back. Pics started showing up in my messages. So try to remove Facebook and add t again
Sent from my Infuse 4G.
For the Facebook/Social Networking Sync issue: I just got the Infuse a couple of days ago and noticed this issue. By going into the Facebook App and bringing up the settings, I determined that by default the Sync Friends withContacts is set to "Sync with existing contacts" which while it makes sense actually doesn't do squat. So, by changing to "Sync All" I was able to get everything populated over.
To the OP's post: As is stated, messaging only seems to go off what you've got in your Gmail account for account pics. It's annoying, but maybe an update is forthcoming to fix this.
Try this:
Go to:
Settings > Accounts and sync
Make sure facebook "sync contacts" is unchecked.
Now press the "Add Account" button at the bottom.
Choose the Facebook SocialUpdates account. Should be right at the top.
Make sure Sync Contacts is checked under this one.
Let it sync and be AMAZED!
Note: I see everyone's facebook profile pics in the messaging app.
I had this problem and it really bothered me. All I did was backup my contacts to Gmail and then I let in sync. After that I just unchecked all the display options for Gmail so it would just show Facebook contacts
