Win 8.1 rt issues - Microsoft Surface

I can't seem to pinpoint the problem for why my battery life is terrble. On the win 8.1 preview it was great and lasted alot longer. It dies alot quicker now from basically do the same task as i did with the preview. I only get around 5 hours of battery life. Now if i leave it on standby, the battery drains like 9 percent an hour. I tried putting bluetooth on and that only FIXES the drain some of time which is weird. Any suggestions?

I'd do a refresh if it was me.
What apps have you installed, is everything up to date?

I'll second that, I've had battery issues appear from nowhere right when I bought my RT, and when I put on RTM. Refresh seems to have solved some of that each time. At least in terms of standby drain.

Refresh is a waste of time. It's a known issue with the Bluetooth driver; keep it turned on (doesn't have to be connected to anything) to avoid rapid standby battery drain. This has been documented online, here and elsewhere; please use search. Refresh will just mean you have to install updates again.

I turned BT off on mine and never had any issues...

If leaving Bluetooth on fixes everything, then why didn't it fix everything? I'm not saying it shouldn't be left on to avoid drain, but it's not the only thing to try. I've had BT on since purchase time a few months ago and still had drain problems appear and then resolve after a refresh (twice now)

"Mobile view" displayed in IE11
Ok, this is really driving me nuts!! So I noticed that a few minor websites were being displayed in "mobile view" in IE11. Annoying but I could cope as they weren't that important. But For some reason this week Facebook has now started to be displayed in mobile view which has made it COMPLETELY UNUSABLE.
I'm running 8.1 preview on my desktop with IE11 also and it displays all websites correctly. So WHY is my Surface RT displaying mobile versions of website??!!
Does anyone have any insights into this??
I hope like heck it'll be sorted when 8.1 final gets released to Surface RT.

Having the same issue with mobile sites.

Add the site(s) to Compatibility View in IE in Desktop mode, the setting will then be in place in the Modern UI mode.

several things here.
A) This is a matter of personal preference rather than true fact or non fact, mobile facebook works just fine. I *exclusively* use mobile facebook on all of my devices.
B) Well known issue with the fix posted in this forum, including a fix posted in the last few days. User agent string, facebook doesn't recognise the user agent string for internet explorer 11 on RT so thinks that you are using an incompatible browser and serves up the plain mobile view (there is an additional version of the mobile site for "fully fledged" browsers too). change it to match that of internet explorer 10 (its in the developer settings I think) and facebook will think you are using internet explorer 10 on a full windows PC and will serve up the desktop site.
C) In the case of facebook there is a button at the bottom of the page which says "Desktop Site", this over-rides the user agent string and will send you to the desktop site. Facebook sometimes (albeit not always) remembers that you selected this option and defaults to desktop again for your device.
D) It can't be fixed by microsoft. It isn't actually an issue that has anything to do with microsoft really, it is the fault of whoever has not updated the website you are viewing with internet explorer 11 recognition (not even full support, just recognizing it as a full desktop browser will do).

can i know how to refresh surface rt?

I'm on a Pro now so expect what I have here to be a bit different to the RT, can you not use the search charm on your device and search for refresh etc.?

Surface RT only: Battery issue when updating from Windows RT 8.1 Preview
If you updated Surface RT from Windows RT 8.1 Preview to Windows RT 8.1, you may notice a decrease in battery life. During the update, the wireless adapter power policy isn’t migrated. Instead, the power policy is set to a default value that consumes more power both during use and in the connected standby state.
To restore the wireless adapter power policy to the correct settings, open an administrator command prompt:
Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)
Step 2: In the search box, enter command prompt.
Step 3: Touch and hold (or right-click) Command Promptto bring up the context menu. Tap or click Run as administrator.
Step 4: On the User Account Control dialog box, tap or click Yes.
Step 5: At the Administrator: Command Prompt, enter the following:
powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 19cbb8fa-5279-450e-9fac-8a3d5fedd0c1 12bbebe6-58d6-4636-95bb-3217ef867c1a 3

Moving from Windows Mobile to Android (HTC Sensation)....Data connection

Having decided against moving to Win Mobile 7 I got a Sensation a couple of weeks ago (from a HD2) and hence my first Android device.
All is going well apart from the data connection. On Win Mob 6.5 I had 5 business emails which the phone checked every 15-30 minutes. The phone would connect, check the emails and then disconnect. If I wanted to browse then when I opened the browser, it connected and disconnected when I closed it.
On the Sensation I seem only to have the option of data connection on or off. I have set the email to sync every 30 minutes but I have to have the data connection on all the time to let it do this. The battery drain is crippling.
I download Juice Defender Ultimate after reading another thread but after setting it up it only allows data for so many minutes in the hour and when I say that the browser should overide Juice it just says I have no connection.
I love Android but losing 75% of your battery in 6 hours because of business emails is not quite good enough.
So is there a way of getting the data connection to go on and off as required (both on demand and for scheduled automatic email syncs)?
And if not what Juice defender settings do I need to get it to do what I want?
Any help much appreciated.
I'm looking for an answer to this to, for the exact same reason. A "Data Connection Timeout" setting or something similar.
Switch to pushmail, saves you quite some data transfers and is more effective in the end. I have two hotmail addresses plus oen gmail on pushmail and I don't notice any more battery drain with data connection permanently on.
Settings>Mobile Networks>untick "Enable always-on mobile data.
This usually helps the battery drain a lot, especially if you don't have things that are always using data, like pandora and the like. If you have things set to specific intervals, then it should work like your WinMo devices and connect then disconnect as needed.
Admittedly the droid likes to be more automated than WinMo, and you have much less control than 6.5. (Never used Phone7, so I can't comment on that.) But, once you learn the tricks to using it (just like the tricks to 6.5) its just as powerful as WinMo was for the business geared user, as far as I can tell. The battery is something that takes some finessing as well, so keep working with it and keep learning. There are some pretty good guides available that can tell you steps to take, even a few here on XDA for the searching.
Good luck with your new droid device, it will become second nature in time. It took me a month to quit tapping the icons in the task bar. LOL.
Thanks for the replies
I think the fact that the HD2 and the Sensation both use Sense helps and therefore it has been fairly easy to get to grips with Android.
I have already unchecked the 'always on' option but I never seem to get any emails unless I open the email program up...even when its running in the background. Win Mobile 6.5 used to check without the email being open.
I have had another play with JD and seem to have sort of got what I want but sometimes the data connection won't wake up after the unlock screen without a data toggle on and off.
Is there any better email apps from the market?

Strange because when I do that I get a lot better battery life and my push Gmail arrives in 2-3 minutes instead of isntantly. also Google Talk won't stay connected with this setting. Other than that it seems to work really well for me doing exactly what you want.

[Q] Mango browser problem

Hi guys, my friend updated his HTC Trophy to mango yesterday and its been making a lot of problems. Was wondering if you all could help out.
1. Browser doesnt automatically go into mobile version on selected sites (mostly bank sites)
www.nab.com.au
www.commbank.com.au/
P.s I tried them on my HTC Mozart 7 also and it doesnt go into mobile version as well. I ended up have to find the site address of mobile version in order to go in. He said before mango, the sites would be recognized as mobile version.
2. Automatic date system continues to reset his time back to 1980???
3. Calls doesnt work sometimes and SMS disappears suddenly
4. Battery life reduced dramatically. Before mango it was 2-3 days standby. Now its <1 day standby. (What is the average standby time for trophy if u turn off all connections? - 3G, wifi, location, bluetooth)
5. One note syncing problem, in one of the notebook, one of the section on phone never appears even though it can be found in skydrive and on computer.
Thanks guys.... please help me out... he is about to throw his wp7 into the trash can....
Calm down. You can revert back to NoDo and try the update again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI3syH1Gg2M
If that fails, you can also try a new ROM.
On the side note: www.nab.com.au and www.commbank.com.au doesn't recognize IE Mobile 9 user agent and sent it the desktop site. This is not an issue with the browser.
Um its quite sad that the said websites worked before IE9 in wp7.... Any chance this will be improved in the future?
How long is the average battery life for trophy on mango?
The website issue is completely reliant on the banks themselves. If they decided to recognize IE9 mobile as a phone browser then it would re-direct the phone to the mobile site. That is just an issue of laziness ont he part of the banks.
My mango trophy gets about 10-12 hours with heavy use. Standby time is about 2 days

Got my GT7+ yesterday and have a couple questions. Brightness? WiFi?

Edit: This is the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus 4G w/ TMobile...
So far I am loving it. I have had a plethora of Android tablets, including the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (until yesterday), and the original 7" Tab. Here is an issue I have not run into thus far...
Issue 1: I like my brightness settings to be %100 all the time. I always (almost) have a power cable with me, so I'm not worried about the drain. I have the auto setting turned off as to keep it from adjusting on it's own. However, everytime I open the status menu with the brightness slider, it is down to about %90-%95. I can't get it to stay on full. Also, and even more annoying, every time I open the browser, the brightness drops to like %30'ish and I have to open the status menu and slide it back up. The browser is where I REALLY need the full brightness the most, and it's the biggest issue.
I noticed this out of the box, adjusted settings, nogo, so I factory reset, and same issue. This is leading me to believe this is just a setting or something I am missing. Any ideas?
Issue 2 (THE BIG ONE): This Tab 7+ can't see my work wifi. It connects to my wifi at home just fine (did last night at least), which is also WPA, but it doesn't even see the one at work. It acts like it isn't there. In fact, and this is probably important, it is not seeing any networks up here, and there are at least 10-15 that should be visible from my location in the building (all but a couple from other companies). My G2x (Android 2.3) is connected to my work wifi just fine, and it sees all the others around us, the the Tab 7+ right next to it sees none. I also turned on the wifi router on my phone, it will not see that one either. I've verified the wireless is enabled, as well as turning it off and on multiple times and many reboots, nogo... I need it to hit the wifi at work and home so it isn't sucking my 4G data, so this is a big issue for me.Any ideas? I'm at a loss...
Also, to answer before it's asked: Nope, it's not rooted. I may do this at some point (as I do most of my devices), but for the moment I want to leave it stock and not mess with it. These issues seem like they should be resolved/nonexistant in the stock ROM, so I shouldn't have to root to fix them. Please tell me if this is incorrect...
Thanks for any help, sorry for the long post...
(pardon typos, I'm at work and multitasking, no time to proofread)
on the brightness broweer tip. use a different browser. its a known issue that the stock browser automaticaly dims the screen.

Thank you... You're right, it doesn't happen in Dolphin, however I am one of those weird people the really prefers the stock browser...
The biggest issue is the wifi not showing up. I am updating that issue with more info now...
what channel is the wireless network on? i had a similar problem on my windows laptop, it cannot see the wifi.. turned out that my wireless card(the driver actually) cannot see any wireless network beyond channel 12.. who knows you're having the same problem, might worth checking.

Ours is on 6... Thanks though
for me it was the opposite, it could see my home wifi, but not my work.
only was to solve it was to setup a static ip at work for the GT7...
I called samsung, they said its a problem with some routers. No eta on fix other than static IP.

Just to chime in - I also have the same problem connecting to my work wireless network but I think because it uses a SEPARATE authentication scheme.
The way my office WLAN work is like this:
1). Connect to the WLAN with SSID "Office", no encryption password required
2). Once the Tab is connected, it WILL receive an IP address
3). Open up a browser (Dolphin, etc.) and try to go to any website (Google, etc.)
4). Instead of going to the website I typed in in no. 3, an authentication page will show up
5). I need to enter my Windows AD account and password
6). If its successful, then I can start browsing the Internet (but not going to the Internal network, that requires VPN access).
Step 3 is where the Tab FAILED to do so. It just doesn't want to get redirected to the authentication page.

Yep, same way for me at work. OP did you try to manually add the wireless info vs letting the tab "find" the access point?

Also, here is a strange thing. About 2 hours ago it notified me there were wireless networks in range, and then showed me 2 random networks from another office. Suddenly, it saw nothing again. Then about 5 minutes ago, while I was in the bathroom ( ), it suddenly showed me ALL of the surrounding networks. Yay! I tried to connect to the one I use, it took my password, but never even attempted to connect. Then, they are gone. Now it doesn't see them.
What. The. Fuuuudge.

[Q] Need Help with Pdanet vs Netflix

I don't have internet at my location, so I have to use my phone as a tether. When I run Pdanet, I have to run it with level 1 hidden usage or T-Mobile will pop up saying I've run out of hotspot data. However, if I try to view Netflix with hidden usage, I get message 51 saying my computer isn't compatible. Is there a workaround for this that I'm not aware of?
Edit: I'm using a crappy MyTouch 4G for the phone and my computer is Windows 7, browser is Chrome.
I'm having the same/similar issue. It takes me directly to the page that lists the system requirements to watch Neftlix instantly. Obviously this is caused by whatever method PdaNet+ uses to hide the tether usage (it works fine if I use WiFi).
It's my guess that the problem lies with Microsoft Silverlight, because when I go to the webpage to install/update Silverlight, it just hangs and the url string in the browser ends with "?reason=unsupportedbrowser&_helpmsg=NoKnownBrowser.mozilla#sysreq"
I've tried a couple different user agent switchers to no avail. I can use the WiFi Share option on PdaNet or a similar separate program (or connect directly with PdaNet and BT) and watch Netflix on my tablet just fine, but the Android app for Netflix doesn't use Silverlight.

What I've been doing to circumvent this is disable hiding tether usage when I click on a show/movie to watch, but then I turn the hiding back on as soon as the page loads, so it doesn't use USB tether info for the loading of the video.

If it does, it's no more than loading a normal page. I switch back over to hidden as soon as the "loading circle" shows up on the screen. Before it gets to the red page with the long loading bar. (If that makes sense.)
In other words, I have never used up my mobile hotspot allowance by doing this and I've been averaging about 50gigs of data a month. It WILL use up your hotspot allowance if you leave it unhidden. I learned that the hard way my first month.
Very cool. Depending on the time of day I get 25-40+ Mb/sec download speeds at my apartment (there's T-Mobile antennae on the roof), and with PdaNet, I don't need home internet. But trying to get Netflix to work was frustrating the crap out of me. Even spent an hour talking with a higher-level tech support guy and he couldn't figure out the problem either. Tried Chrome/Iron, Firefox, and IE. Uninstalled/reinstalled them all, Silverlight, etc.
I really wonder how PdaNet hides the tether usage. It's not a user agent switcher, because you can go to websites that detect your system, and they identify my set-up exactly.
Now that I know how to get it to work and not drain my Hotspot, the only question is do I start with "24" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"?
I know this thread is very old but i had to share what i experimented yesterday. I have Windows 8 in my PC and downloaded the Netflix app from the Marketplace. PDANet seems to work flawlessly with the Netflix app.

Why downloads quickly fail on android and don't with windows and how to fix that ?

Hello, I have 2 android phones and both have the same problem: if I let them download some big files slowly for hours on sites like k2s, rg, df etc, the download is usually interrupted after a few hours/minutes while I never meet this issue on a windows 10 computer which is also in wi-fi (and which is in my bedroom, thus why I want to download with a silent phone when I'm sleeping). I guess it's mainly due to those sites being intolerant to any second where the phone is not downloading, but as I said, I don't have that problem with windows, so what is it, is android highly unreliable for downloads or what ?
You should check your Power Saving setting. Maybe you should make sure to enable some option like "Keep WLAN connection while sleeping'.
I don't have Power Saving setting, it appeared on android 5 and I have 4. All I have is "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" which was already on "always" and "Avoid poor connections" which I already unchecked.
I don't know, sometime download fail after 30mn sometime 10 hours, and if I download multiple files they won't even fail at the same time.
I can't accept the idea of buying a newer phone for something that simple, I mean, I had no trouble with that with a windows mobile 12 years ago, I wouldn't be sure that it would fix the problem and if after 4 versions there is still something wrong like that, it's pretty obvious that if I buy the very last android it will also still have some big bugs to which some would quickly tell me to buy an even newer phone (which would once again not be reliable and so on).
Isn't there some apps that could somehow fix that ? My only other option ironically seems to use my old HTC Universal but it would have limited memory and it would be annoying to copy paste links to it since it can't directly solve modern captchas.

Maybe there is an occasional interruption in your network at some point that a PC can tolerate without timing out but at the same time android can't tolerate without timing out.
Or maybe it is a wakelock of some kind in the background of your android system that is interrupting the download.
Or maybe it is the android system's wifi re-scan interval causing an interruption that lasts too long for the download to persist.
Sent from my SM-S767VL using Tapatalk
This problem is also with windows when download from chrome or firefox or whatever but it appears more in android.
The solution is common for windows and Android both....
1.For windows, Use Internet download manager (Almost everyone use it to download any kind of files)
2.For Android, Use Adavanced Download Manager (ADM),,It is similar to IDM and works perfectly..
It can resume files by refreshing link if not normally..As i said completely similar to IDM and there is no other match for this on android as i tried many other download managers but they are not ideal
Personally,,I download big files like upto 5 GB with ADM on android...It is Great!!
Hope You are satisfied!!!!
