You can close apps by double tapping the home button and sliding up on an application. There isn't a built-in feature to clear the memory as far as I know, you'd need a task manager app for that, but I wouldn't suggest that. Just close whatever apps you don't want running by double tapping Home and let Android manage the memory.
There isn't a built in file manager, but you can install one from the Market. File Manager, ES File Explorer File Manager, ASTRO File Manager, and Root Explorer are all good. Personally I use Root Explorer which is $3.99, but a lot of people like ES File Explorer which is free.
You can get to the application manager by going to Settings then Apps, it's the 7th option from the bottom.

download plug-in? *update 01-30-09*

Ok so 2day I checked the maket I needed a file manager, I got 1 call Linda , well it has a plugin that allows you to download any file from the default browser which is cool. Well was wondering if there is anyway someone could take that plugiin and just add it to the default broswer because I kinda don't lke the file manager.
*update*
There's is an app in the market called "Download Crutch" it has no gui or icon just allows you to download files
The way that the plugin works is that it tells the browser that Linda FileManager will be able to handle the file (whether it can or not). The only way so far to make the browser able to download a filetype (without modifying the browser's source) is to use this method.
You're probably going to have to download an app to do this anyways, so you might as well just stick with the Linda File Manager.
Does anyone have the browser's source? and i thought thats how it worked so if we are correct, then that means that the browser checks for an app to support the file. So if i downloaded the zip program then i would be able to download zip files right?
*edited*
ok try that with unzip and it didnt work so im guessing some programs wont have the file extension set in the os like linda does
Wow i had no idea linda file manager did that, thats good to hear. ive been using astro all this time. Thanks for the tip!
It says replace appilication but I've never installed this app. It wont let me uninstall it from setttings. When I goto update the app it says, installation unsuccessful, package file was not signed correctly.
Is this a possbile error due to JF 1.41 or would it be a error due to a custom theme from MacDroid 2.2?

yeah its kind of a tug of war between Astro (aka Bender) and Linda File Manager (aka Android file manager) Personally i think astro has the upper hand because it has the selection mode, application manager, and can make shortcuts to any file on the home screen. But now linda has the new download plugin...
i wish they would just get together and make one "all powerful file browser"

[Q] [Solved]Stock task manager in TJ's CyanogenMod 7.2.0?

Like the title says, is there any possibility to install stock task manager in TJ's CyanogenMod 7.2.0?
I've tried with the root explorer process by moving the app to system/app folder and provided the correct permission followed by reboot but nothing worked out....suggestions please? or any similar market app that does the same job?

I do it using with Root Explorer. Root Explorer open, go to the SD card, find the installation package from the Task Manager, copy it, then go to System> app (up in the corner should be R / O) and paste it. Then hold your finger glued to the program, drop-down menu appears and choose Permissions. Put a checkmark where it does not, and then click OK. Restart.

Thanks for the help and your efforts in the graphical guidance. Finally it's working.....! Thank you.
For anyone having the same problem can follow the above method, don't use JobManager.apk(dang...i used that) Use the TaskManager.apk from OJ_mod ROM.

[Q] Astro file manager?

I am running Darthstalker X1 rom and I need to remove the file SDM.apk from system/app file, but when I choose it in Astro and hit delete nothing happens. I also have tried to rename files with Astro and it won't do that either. Is this normal for Astro? What file manager app do most of you use?
Thanks,
Glenn
Edit: I was able to download File Manager (free) and gave it super user access and then was able to delete the apk. I have not figured out how to grant Astro Super User access through SuperSU yet though???
I know when I use root explorer I have to mount as RO before I can make changes. I'm not sure if astro allows this. If not use esfile explorer its free and I know that works.

What you are trying to requires root access. ES file explorer is one app that allows you to do that for free. There are others but you may have to pay for it.
I'm not the type of person to shy away from spending money on ApPs. However the app I use the most is 1 of the only ones that actually is free. ES file Maneger is the only one I've ever used. I Tried the rest but found this 1 to be a perfect solution. Just make sure you enable root access and system read write permission under settings. You can't go wrong

Installing one app, does not replace another app. If it is a newer version of the same app, then it will update the old one.
You can install all the file explorers you find on the play store, and you will have all of them installed at the end and they won't replace each other.
The only solution is to uninstall the app you don't want. In your case: My Files.
But My Files is a system app (talking about a samsung tw rom?) and you can't uninstall it normally. You are rooted so you can uninstall it. Use an app like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp
There are many more like it.
Beware though, if you uninstall critical system apps, your phone might not work properly any more. Make sure you know what you're doing.
And also, you won't be able to remove some apps for various reasons.
Edit: One other way to remove system apps is to use a browser like Root Explorer or Root Browser, navigate to the location: /system/app or /system/priv-app and remove the app from there. But again: USE CAUTION!!
Cheers
Replace apps
thank you for your reply.
i know how to uninstall system apps with my rooted phone. now let me explain to you my real problem.
i have some files which i want hidden. now the ES Explorer does the task and requires password to show hidden files . BUT anyone can see them using the option in "my files" that is "show hidden files" . Hence it is an application that nulls the security enhancement provided by the ES file Explorer:crying:.
so i thought that i should uninstall the "my files" app but when i did this, other apps like Camera and Gallery stopped working and i had to re-install the "my files" app.
But i have seen custom Roms in which one or two stock apps are replaced by other advanced apps. Can you tell me the process?

Unfortunately no. I do not know all the dependencies between apps. And I don't think you can change dependencies for an app. These are hardcoded inside the app itself. As an example, I have a galaxy s4 and use custom ROMS based on cyanogenmod. It's impossible to have the camera app from the stock Samsung rom because of the dependencies required for the app to run.
I think you need to find a different approach. Try maybe protecting them somehow instead of hiding them
Good luck

How do I force a default app when no link exists? (File explorer)

Hi there, very basically I want to use Solid Explorer as my default file explorer app but no defaults exist in either the default manager or Solid Explorer.
The device is a rooted Lenovo YT3-X50F (Yoga tab 10) running Android 6/AEX. It has TWRP.
I have tried third party apps that manage default apps and as none detect the file manager association, they don't offer it up as an option to change. Some apps allow me to select Solid Explorer via the sidebar in "documents", the default file explorer.
The reason I want to do this is because some apps need access to /root and the default file manager does not browse root.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
